It's official. Retail Emulator Devs have disbanded over recent reports of Xbox accounts getting 15-day suspensions and Retail Developer accounts getting full-on console bans from Xbox Live! Hikiko discusses the history of Retail Mode, the false rumors, and the potential reason why Microsoft is stomping out emulators from its Xbox platform.

Lol they killed their only killer console exclusive.
on PC
Sad but true. I know some people say there are "good" exclusives on X, but anyone still running RetroArch in offline retail mode isn't missing anything.
Yes Phil took a stance but legally keyword legally. When you dealing with 360 games there's still tons of licensing evolved and other legal ramifications. So I get it it sucks but I get it.
Welp. As a guy who uses Emulators on PC, I would just stick on PC for emulators.
And how much did you spend on your PC? More than $500 and I haven't looked into Xbox emulation. You can emulate some stuff on smartphones too... But under $500 phones will struggle more than the $1,200 phones.
@brallansnow9930 actually I paid $76 for a Used PC Setup and only $99 for Upgrades 🤡
Second, I am aware of Smartphone emulating and any android phone that's like $100 and above could emulate up to Switch games. It doesn't have to be $500 or so to be an emulation beast. Have you seen the Emulator handhelds?
Diddo
@@brallansnow9930 $250 here
@@KingGameZ43great way to engage a convo, call someone a clown for simply making the wrong assumption. Not defending the guy but, wow.
It's sad to see this story come to a close. I have been following this story for 3 years and was an active user of Retail mode. I will miss it dearly!
yeah i also got 15 Day suspensions by xbox report. i was trying to play sonic time twisted on xbox one.
dev mode man u can still do the same just gotta pay a one time fee of 20$
Meanwhile Microsoft is stealth delisting games
Which games?
When they started doing this? I’m confused 🫤
The OP is probably talking about the 46 BC Xbox 360 games that got delisted back in Feb 2023. Games such as Daytona USA, Jet Set Radio and Prince of Persia 2008 were all delisted.
@@GenkiStarLeaftheir library could be CRAZY right now.
I can't even play GTA 5 on gamepass ultimate anymore like wtf IDC I only got on for that wheel spin then if it's not a car to upgrade I would go to dev mode lol
I moved back to PC for emulation once Microsoft started removing them. I knew that it was always going to turn into a game of whack-a-mole trying to get the retail emulators working again, but i'm shocked they'd go as far as bans.
Is retroarch safe to use? Is dev mode safe to use? Im new to the emulator system i just want to play old PlayStation games on the series s
@@Pro1938ftc3chthose questions also concerns me im looking forward to get myself series s and play games on retroarch so idk if it will be risky or not?
As sad as it is, it’s to be expected, MS wouldn’t want emulators on their platforms. At least I still got them on steam deck, but it’s not the same as playing on tv and having all games in one place.
you can play the deck on a tv.
@@xplayfan21 I know, but it’s not as convenient as Xbox Series consoles were. But it’s ok, I already gave up on it after first takedown, since I knew if it happened once it’ll eventually will happen again.
But you still can on Xbox, use dev mode
I saw this news earlier and had a feeling you were going to cover it. At least Dev Mode is still an option. Sure, there's a one-time fee (around $20, I think?) and it takes about a solid minute to switch between modes, but it works very well and I don't have to worry about losing access to emulators.
You think Microsoft would ban dev mode emulators too? Using Emulators on dev mode isn't illegal right? If it is tell me your reason
Is it one time pay? Oh that's not buy. Subscription... I would never do it
@@peymanrstg3261that's never gonna happen.
@@unkown34x33it’s one time pay
@@peymanrstg3261Dev Mode is for this exact reason, to track development. What you do in Dev Mode cannot be banned or stopped by Microsoft, it’s why it has been highly recommended since day 1 to use it.
This is why I don't give any of these corporations money.
🧢
based. fuck all corpos.
You can give steam/Valve money they won't censor you on your console like everyone else.
Nice job on the video. Recommened it to everyone during the podcast. Well Explained!
After the first time they removed emulator I just waited and bought a steam deck it's been my best friend when it comes to playing games with emulation I knew we never truly get emulator back on retail without it going wrong
Last week I tried installing a SNES emulator on my long forgotten 360 so I can play on a CRT, I probably failed for not having Hikiko's glorious Captain America pompadour.
Dev mode is pretty good
Can you use it without connecting to Microsoft's severs?
@@HikikomoriMedia Yes, I play offline just fine. Of course you will need an internet connection for first time setup. Also with Safe Exit app is pretty easy to switch between retail and developer.
I used to play Mario on my Xbox frequently, sad now once I came back it’s gone
What if we download the emulator in the usb from the computer and then put the xbox offline and plug the usb and play it, after that unplug usb if you want to back online.
Does this work?
Are everyone try it?
The emulators cannot be installed from USB, but the roms can be read from one. Dev mode is a different story.
Get Dev Mode.
Is there a way to use a banned Xbox console as an emulation machine if it doesn't already have dev mode activated? Or a way to put dev mode on a banned console?
Oh god. How did you get banned
@@BLACKSTA361 Oh I didn't, I just saw a banned xbox going cheap and thought it might be useful as a emulation machine
One of the main things that Xbox had going for it was the freedom of running emulators. Now, Xbox is officially dead to me.
You can still do it on dev mode
@@fernando_713 Only a matter of time before they begin cracking down on that too. They've shown their intentions of making money, eventually they will ban dev mode emulation in order to divert people to their retro gaming subscription.
@@naimahmed3720Emulation is the only thing Xbox currently has that PlayStation doesnt.
@@fernando_713 can you avoid the ban if you put retroarch on a externat harddrive and play that way? and unplug the drive when you wanna go on the internet?
In all honesty I literally saw this coming as soon as it began to gain traction with UA-camrs talking about all the different emulators and it blowing up to the mainstream. Not blaming UA-camr's of course its all on Microsoft but I had a feeling they'd do something about it and that's my main thing why I have an issue with consoles and one entity ruling the platform with an iron fist figuratively speaking. They can change policies and you either get with the program or face the hammer.
It's unfortunate Microsoft are doing this but not surprising.
got 2 xboxs one is offline just for emulator and retro games, and the another is online just normal
Question- can you put retroarch on a external hard drive and avoid getting ban that way???
I feel like Microsoft should have encourage it. It's a huge thing on Xbox because that thing runs as good as a PC 😂
When Microsoft gets a cease and desist or being threatened to get sued from Arcade and other console companies, then you better believe there will be bans. At least in Dev Mode, for the time being, it's ok as tons of people aren't playing other games for free
I wonder if this is more of a legal issue or just staying in the good graces of Nintendo and others. They are giving out warnings first then a ban.
This started to escalate ever since they ported the Xbox 360 emulator xenia to the series X | S, since then Microsoft have ramped up the taking down and banning of emulators running on the consoles
@@edwardduffy4793 honestly don't think that has anything to do with it I remember around the same time Nintendo was really going after people for using emulators
Can you do any emulation like for the Xbox on the PS5?
no
nope !!!! lol
Yes, but it's extremely complicated for the average user and not worth the effort at the moment.
I'm glad I didn't jump on the bandwagon again.
Microsoft Xbox already said this will happen after they said get off retail emulators but PPL ain't listening and now they crying why my account get banned and I was telling you ages ago makono that retail mode is gone
It's only gone if you updated.
luckly I am offline I have retail emus😆
That's some B's we paid to play anything on them
Just buy 2 Xbox
Child predator and nintendo...its the same thing
I can just taste the bitterness in this post
@@samtemdo8 can taste the soybean oil of your comment
Also hell no! I won't pay monthly for emulators. That's why Nintendo emulators were born. So Nintendo doesn't rip us off
You guys and your preservation talk. You just want ease of access to games spanning decades, and not preservation. When I hear preservation, I think of a museum or some sort of time capsule of games and not expecting to run PS2 titles for free on an Xbox console whenever I like, for the rest of the consoles life, AND in retail. C'mon now.
Flew too close to the sun. Ambitious with more emulators being supported, improved, and even bringing an Xbox 360 emulator that can run stuff that has too many legal questions. What was going to be next? PS3 emulation? And Sony and every other publisher was going to just go "yeah, sure, that's reasonable".
The fact that this stuff even worked for this many years is great as it is. Does it suck? Yeah absotutely. But don't be surprised at all. Get a PC, stop supporting Xbox entirely, move on with life.
I ripped my own Xbox 360 games to play on my Series X. Games that are not supported through Backwards Compatibility or for sale anywhere. Where in that scenario is Microsoft losing a sale? Do I want ease of access? Absolutely. That's what's not being provided in the first place.
How do you know what people "actually want"? Are you a telepath, do you have a crystal ball, or something like this?
...or alternatively you're vomiting certainty on things that it cannot reliably know, such as the others' intentions, and thus you can be safely labelled and ignored as lacking basic rationality.
Lmao lots of these retro games you talk about ain't even for sale anymore.
Companies don't profit off of these games anymore. Do you still see ps2 games in stores?
@@suleimansylvesterin Brazil they still sell ps2

I figured this would happen. My first thought when I heard about emulators working on the official Xbox OS was "No way a game company allows for that". They left them in for a while but they were gonna take them down eventually.
They are just jealous because the older games are better than the crap they are releasing right now. But hackers.... They always find a way
Still running offline with RetroArch in retail as well. I'm essentially betting there won't be a single worthwhile exclusive on X throughout its lifetime. I remember thinking MS had a shot at being the Patrician's choice this gen.
I dont mind because dev mode is interesting because of the devkit functionality. Durango ftp, and the ability to compile stuff for the xbox console. I love messing around with my 360 xdk, and cant wait until i get a xbox series s.
So is dev mode safe to use?
@tssuhvc5807 yup I've been using it since this comment. Playing emulators and I'm not banned.
@@Pro1938ftc3chyes
When will people learn that always on means they can just brick your console at any time? I just cannot get on board with anything after the 360 for this reason. What's the point? You might as well either buy the original hardware or go heavy on PC emulation.
This is also a pretty bold move from a company that has completely lost the console generation and can't release a AAA game for love or money!!!
Okay but you do know that Nintendo has its lawyers on standby any time an emulator is in the grape vine. Im sure that’s the reason it’s getting taken down. Ffs as well this is the same company that is actually trying to preserve their games even go as far as bring us back some old cod servers and even raise some fps on games But “Bold move from a game company that has completely lost a generation….” For ffs. You don’t see sony and nintendo do shit for their games better lock it for streaming purposes or release the bare minimum for download. It was bold of Microsoft to even allow that on their console in the first place not to mention get as much licensing as they can so the public can play some classics
Knew this would happen. Better if you stick to pc or your phone
Account banning is one thing, but Console banning is horrible, this should never exist
Well, don’t break rules then? Idk
@@girIcorewe payed for it tho
@@demetrisamuels7823 If you paid for Dev Mode, you cannot get banned. Dev Mode is a private sandbox for emulation and game tests.
If you paid for an emulator via the Xbox Store, you didn’t pay Microsoft, you paid someone that uploaded. The person that uploaded it violated TOS. Therefore you violated TOS.
Antstream just launched on Xbox...one wonders if it is connected 🤔
It's a likely reason. It's mentioned at the end of this video.
If that is true I regret buying a lifetime pass I do not want to support developers who do stuff like that
@@Emufreak I'm sure the developers have nothing to do with it. The platform already existed. It was just made available on Xbox. Some bean counters at M$ are probably like "retail mode might lose us money!!!", But it won't, because the people using retail mode aren't going to pay for antstream anyway.
Hopefully this will make people try to crack open the Xbox one and Xbox series x and s
Unreal, this is very disappointing news
Well time to sell the series S its useless to me, the fact that Microsoft dont even mention this anywhere in any type of statement or release is a joke, what ticks me off the most is this shit ability of Microsoft to legit stop people from using already apps they have installed in their machines
go PC
Will i get banned if i use emulators on dev mode on xbox series x ? It's not illegal i think right?
hell no dev mode is the way to go !! i even stream my games on twitch !1
Question- can you put retroarch on a external hard drive and avoid getting ban that way???
Have you been following the durango dumpling exploit?
Whats with that?
sigh, and we don't even know if it's safe to get dev mode for emulation. Best to wait and see what happens next I guess
Why you think it could be illegal on dev mode?
@@peymanrstg3261 who knows what microsoft would do to shill their own emulator
@hill444 dev mode emulation is never gonna go away unless they just completely remove dev mode which is never gonna happen too
lol i was telling people not to go back to retail nobody wanted to listen lol dev mode is safe lol
Never mind, Polymega is always better than that stupid system.
makes me think we need an xbox with a hot swap ssd
A console or a Microsoft account is banned, in fact?
i subscribed
What about ps2 titles (xbsx2)
My experience so far has been great, but sometimes (rarely) JP roms don't read. I boot up SH2 and 3, the widescreen patches are automatically applied, and the frame rate is rock solid. Dead Aim, needed tweaking in settings while in-game. Party Girls doesn't want to read. Shadow of Destiny didn't work one day, but worked the next and continues to work.
0:37- hmmm could it be Nintendo 🤔
Finish the video
@@HikikomoriMedia yep I did and i STILL think Nintendo is partly behind it given they ALREADY blocked emulators during the X1 gen.
@@devilshooter126m8 I don't think so. Nintendo would not have a case, as emulators are legal and roms were not distributed on the store. This is probably more to do with the TOS violations and retro streaming services being pushed. The timeline matches.
Xbox is going to F around and get sued, I bet there are people that use emulators with legit ROMs, they have ripped from their purchased games.
On the other hand I don't know why people want to play these games on consoles I guess it's nostalgia from the original Xbox but I would just get a PC and knock yourself out with it.
This is just another reason why I left console I’m done with them, making decisions and taking control over my stuff. Pc was the answer to my problems
