    DECIEM recommends 1/4-1/2 the spoon to 5-10 drops of serum, depending on tolerance. Hope that helps.

    My experience with ascorbic acid has been miraculous. I have melasma with medium skin tone and had heard that vit C was good for that. Found a 12% serum in butylene glycol to try. I have oily skin with large pores and a lot of hyperpigmentation. This was my very first active, had not tried any other skin care products other than facial cleanser and moisturizer. At first the serum stung when I would apply it so I only used it once a day, sometimes every other day if my skin was irritated. After about 2 weeks my skin adjusted and there was no longer any stinging. I watched my skin transform before my eyes over the next two months. It helped with every problem I had reducing pore size, fading the hyperpigmentation somewhat, but my face started to look more plump by month three. Honestly I was shocked and thrilled, my wrinkles look less, I'm 43. It got me hooked on researching and trying more skincare actives because I really do look younger now. I hope that encourages someone to try ascorbic acid.

    I love this powder. My skin seems to handle things well. I’ve been using 1% retinol for about 10 years now every night. I just recently added the TO LAA powder. Currently, at night, I start with a potent AHA+BHA, buffet, hyaluronic acid+B5, 1% retinol, and then as the last step in my routine, I mix the LAA powder into my moisturizer with a few drops of squalane. I started with half a scoop of TO LAA powder with moisturizer the size of a couple of peas, (I like to spread down my neck and then rub into my hands) and a few drops of TO Squalane at first and felt nothing. I’ve now worked my way up to a heaping scoop to the same amount of moisturizer and squalane above and now feel I have a perfect balance for my skin. I’m pretty tingly, in a great way, but not irritated. I’ve never skipped the retinol.

      How helpful, thanks. I started using TO LAA this week and I just added a little into my palm then two drops of my TO Hyaluronic acid worked it all together and it seems fine so far. What do you think about that? Is that safe?

    Whoa! I think you might making this much more difficult than it actually is. For me anyway. I have some of this Vit C powder on order from The Ordinary. I plan to use a 20% Vit C mixture with water. So that means I will need 1 part of the Vit C powder to 4 parts of the liquid. I plan to use distilled water and bring the ph down with vinegar (this will take some testing and hit and miss in the beginning, but once I get the formula, I'm set). And I plan to mix up several days at a time. I have figured that even if it starts going bad before I get to the end of it, I will just mix up more. It is so inexpensive compared to a lot of the skincare out there. After all, I got 10 products from The Ordinary for less than the one bottle of Sunday Riley Good Genes that I was using costs.

    This reminds me. My grandpa used to have a big plastic jar (not transparent white) from the pharmacist with vit. C powder in it. He used to take it every day for his entire life (internally). He lived to be 84 in quite good health. Unfortunately he had a heart condition, but even with it, he lived a long life! NOT that you can take this one internally. Big difference between getting it from a pharmacy, pure, and from a cosmetic company (which might have additives making it not good to take internally).

    Thank you for this thorough review. I have been waiting for this to come out and for you to review it before I decided whether to buy it. I definitely can’t be bothered with mixing it myself. Way too much hassle! But looks good for those people who do like to diy it. I will continue using my timeless vit c that I’ve been using for about a month. I’m very impressed with it. It’s the only vit c serum I’ve seen results with and I’ve tried a few way more expensive vit c serums including drunk elepehant which I wasn’t impressed with at all (their AHA toner in pink bottle is good though) and the skinceuticals which felt nice but the results weren’t great. Timeless is now available in the U.K.

    I mix a little fine vitamin c powder into squalene. Then I take a small amount and mix it with my Clinique moisture surge. I’ve had good success with diy serum as well but prefer this. Fell in love with it when I tried Clinique’s vitamin c booster, but it’s $20 a week. The main ingredients are vitamin c and squalene. I have also found my skin prefers the lower % (no matter which method I use). This will help me fine tune my measurements, thank you! I agree with the cons, though. I’m going to buy the Timeless CE ferulic. I’ll see how it goes.

    Hello Karen!!! I've been watching your videos for 2 years now!! Thanks for sharing your knowlendge!! I have many products from the Ordinary and they're all working like a charm and I'm a big fan of the company! I would really appreciate your help on this. I've been using this powder for a year. I've been mixing half a scoop with Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%. All great but I can use it only at night cause it's not to comfortable under makeup.. it feels a little grainy.. so I've thought to add a drop or two from the Hyaluronic Acid. The mixture was very pleasant and glided on smoothly!!! Made my skin glow!I've been wanting to ask you Is this right? The percentage? The HA drops? Is this mixture working or am I just wasting the products for no reason? It stung a little bit the first day and then it was ok. Could 2 drops of HA be the way to make this great powder to work with Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%?

    • @TheBeautyMaverick

      Hi Anastasia! Thanks so much for watching for so long! Hmm, its a difficult question to answer as this video is a few years old and I haven't used the powder since. I do remember that I gave formulas for using with a water product in the video but said there is no real way to 100% get the right formula unless you PH test each time. Using with HA is a great idea! I just can't say how many drops to how much powder (other than what I said in this video)specifically. I'd say its better to use HA than R&F though as with R&F I don't know if the C would penetrate well...... xxxx

    I keep the original box the product comes in and store the spoon outside of the jar inside of the box. I store the product and spoon inside of the original box. I keep all of my The Ordinary products stored in their original boxes and take them out to use them. It keeps storing them neat and easy to read each box. I have a dedicated shelf on the inside of my bedroom linen closet. I mix 10 drops of The Ordinary resveratrol 3% + ferulic acid and 10 drops of pycnogenol 5% with 1 level scoop (use less vitamin c if you experience skin irritation) of 100% L-ascorbic acid. I mix these in a tiny clear glass bowl with my fingertip until the vitamin c is dissolved. These products enhance the 100% L-ascorbic acid. Or you Google it you can learn about how these 3 products work together. I apply to clean dry skin. After a minimum of 30 minutes I then apply The Ordinary natural moisturizing factors + HA. I apply all of these products to my face, neck, décolleté and the backs of my hands. Try it!

    You're right. The vit c powder I buy and use from a sort of health store is definitely granular when you compare it to how you describe this. It dissolves but the difference in texture is there.

    I just made another batch of vitamin C serum last week. I was in a hurry and I think I added too much vitamin C powder, because it burned my skin and now it is all dried out. I was mixing it in with my rice cleansing powder (Korean) which I used for years no bad effects I mixed in 20% but it was just over the counter not the Ordinary. It took one week and now about five months later I still have a patch that wont heal.

      I am sure The Ordinary uses a better quality, but I cringed when Karen said she used it like a face powder. I currently use Triple C Cosrx and Klairs. I was using clinique C and it greatly improved my skin but I thought it pricey for what it is. All in all its a really effective product if you be careful with it. Pores especially see improvement and texture. I dont like sticky texture so I have trouble finding ones I will reach for. DHC vit C is very good but I hide from it. Might try this with my Cerave hydrating cleanser once a week.

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  6 років тому +2

      Why did you cringe regarding the face powder Lupe? I only used it once on my nose to see what it felt like, but it wouldn't really do much being as it was on top of a full barrier of makeup lol x

      Lupe Luis it ruined my skin barrier for a while there as well. Not from homemade but rather from a strong formulation with an extremely low PH of 2.5. I’m ver cautious with all ascorbic acid products now. I have also made my own but it’s more effort than I’d like.

    Baring in mind that Clinique have a mix-and-use vitamin C product which lasts for a week, how long do you think any mix made with this powder could last? And also, are your spoons heaped or pressed-and-leveled or just leveled?

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  6 років тому +1

      How long they would last would depend what you mixed it with and how you stored it, but as I said in the video, I don't recommend doing it this way as its unlikely a home DIY serum would make something that would last long at all. Spoons are levelled. x

    Just wondering if you could tell me what order I might want to apply these TO products (100% l ascorbic acid mixed with resveratrol+ferulic), alpha arbutin 2%, and azelaic acid? I normally start with a Vit C serum, then apply alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, and sunscreen. But, you mentioned the mixture of the l ascorbic acid and resveratrol + ferulic was oily, so curious if it should be applied after alpha arbutin and azelaic acid, but before sunscreen? Love your vids, you are so knowleagble!

    You are correct about Vitamin C powders from health stores being very grainy and when I tried it I had to dissolve in warm water before adding it to something or it would stay very grainy on your skin. It also irritated my skin so I stopped using it.

      shelliemarie I’ve made my own vitamin c as well. I have The Ordinary’s powder now and it’s so finely milled it’s like flour-very easy to mix into a water based serum in your hand and then apply. Thus far, I have not experienced any irritation but rather just a slight tingling soon application.

    I have been using a 23% vitamin C with hyaluronic acid and Ferrulic once daily for nearly 4 years. The earliest thing I noticed was skin brightening - so much so that for a few weeks I suddenly looked like I had dark circles! I persisted, found I could safely put it round my eyes and that issue soon passed. I also found it healed my rosacea welts without scarring. I have had a scar on my right side of my face since I was 18 (am 48) it formed when I was washing my face and accidentally knocked the head off a spot that bled then scarred. For years I have struggled to hide the scar, even heavy concealer seems to come off it over the day. A couple of months ago I suddenly realised when applying make up that I could hardly see the scar! It has faded so much and flattened. Vit C is the one product I apply every day so I credit it for that. I wouldn't say Vitamin C prevents lines though! Some people seem to credit it with the ability to stop lines but I have never seen that. Still the healing element is good enough for me. I like the serum I buy, it's about £15-17.00 depending on where you buy it so wouldn't want to make my own, this was fascinating though.

    • @Denise-ki9ii
      @Denise-ki9ii 6 років тому

      I haven't tried The Ordinary Vitamin C because I like the one I already use. I get it off Amazon - NEL Vitamin C (used to be £15.00 when I first bought it years ago, I think it's now about £17.00-£19.00). NEL stands for Natural Earth Laboratories, last time I checked they were cruelty free. If you have dry skin and want to try this one out you will need to put moisturiser on top of it. I have oily skin and I have found the Vit C great because the hyaluronic in it sucks up any moisturiser I put on top and stops them feeling sticky so it keeps me matte. Have just realised it's now a 20% formulation, I thought it used to be 23% but I still find it the best for my skin regardless. We are all different but I hope this information helps you. I don't use retin-A though. I get my Vitamin A from cacay oil.

    • @Denise-ki9ii
      @Denise-ki9ii 6 років тому

      I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with the brand you tried, I have also had many expensive skin care fails in the past! I just looked up the ingredients list again for the NEL and it is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate - am now going to revisit Karen's other videos on the different types of Vit C as my curiosity has been triggered. It rings a bell that 20% is the optimal amount so I'm now glad my one is that percentage. I enjoy experimenting with different products but the NEL is the one constant for me over the last few years. Sometimes I put an oil on top of it (Watermelon seed oil or cacay) and the hyaluronic soaks up the oil a treat. The oil blurs my one "eleven" line between my brows which is a plus! I hope you find something cost effective that works for your skin. Good luck!

    I would love to try mixing the Vit c with the R&F from TO. If I mixed them and popped them in 15ml-20ml airless, dark coloured plastic pump bottle... how long do you think I could use that mixture for? Also would that combo be the right one for helping collagen and brightening? Thanks Mrs G x

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  6 років тому

      Hi Pippa, you won't have so many worries with how long it will last because there is no water in it although I don't know how stable or otherwise R&F is. The problem is that it won't penetrate as well as if you use it with a water based product, so unlikely to affect collagen. x

    If you used the e& Ferulic morning and night you could mix double the amount and store in a 10ml syringe with the cap on . Been thinking about using syringes to pull serum out... Great idea saw Melanie Simon demonstrating her morning routine with Biologique Recherge serum. Keeps all the air out. (Just pour onto hand no sticking needles in skin.)

    • @peterkloostermann
      @peterkloostermann 6 років тому

      Laura Pazzaglia she also talks about mixing it with oils, while ascorbic acid doesn't dissolve in oils. Maximum solubility in Propanediol is about 5%, in contrast to about 30-35% in water. Since ascorbic acid still has an ionic charge when there's no pH or when pH is above 3.5 it is unlikely it penetrates skin.

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  6 років тому

      That's what I said in the video Peter - it actually does dissolve in the Res/Fer serum and feels lovely, but I'm aware that it may not penetrate as well as with a water solution as I recommend. However, the vitamin C 30% in Silicone technically has the same issue, but worked wonders for my pores :0)

    • @peterkloostermann
      @peterkloostermann 6 років тому

      Mrs Ginger Beauty. More than 5% can't dissolve, the rest will just be in suspension. Would be interesting to find out how much penetrates from an anhydrous system like the C30 in silicones.

Say week or month because i heard you mention that you don’t need to worry about the stability in the oil. Monique Morrison no, ascorbic acid is water soluble which means it needs to dissolve in water. You can purchase an ascorbic acid serum that has vitamin e oil, for example, but the the primary ingredient is water. If you put the Ascorbic Acid in oil, it will not dissolve.

      Mrs Ginger Beauty Karen, I love your information. You do your homework. When your videos pop up, I just have to watch! You’re the best! I will say, in his case, while the powder appears to dissolve in the oil, it does not. It will not penetrate at all but rather sit on top of your skin. This Ascorbic Acid is so finely milled it would be difficult to see, but if you test this from say one you buy from Amazon or most DIY sites, it would be more obvious (they are more grainy).

      Vit C makes the skin soo sensitive and it consequently results in making the skin very easy to burn and darken w/the sun. It's required to use a minimum 50% sunscreen, any less won't protect the face well enough from darkening and burning from sun UV damage. Also, indoor white lights have approx 20% UV emitting as well so basically only leave the house and start your day with sunscreen!
