    You're playing it wrong:
    1. You've got no sets on (wearing a full set of the same gear gives you a set bonus-these are HUGE bonuses that will give you an advantage).
    2. You're not supposed to guard except for one or two specific enemies, the devs themselves in a Reddit AMA said to think of the Surge like Bloodborne where dodging was the main element. (Although almost any attack can be blocked and it usually knocks a target down if done right, and the ducking/jumping mechanic lands a huge hit if done right)
    3. Targeting body parts is really easy, I had no problems (pressing down on the thumbstick targets body, up targets head, left and right for arms and legs)
    4. Different weapons have different combos, as well as hit differently depending on which body part you're attacking you just have to find out which does which (I learned this by the time I hit the R&D level)
    5. Building off 4, you're free to swap weapons on the go, and certain weapons are not good choices in certain areas. Leveling proficiency is super easy, and should be taken advantage of.
    Don't get me wrong, there are PLENTY of things wrong with The Surge. The song in the medstation is retarded and I get that it's supposed to represent your character but there should be an option to turn it off seeing as you're going to be spending a chunk of your time there. Enemy placement, especially in the maintenance tunnels is just a dick move. Story is relatively short, the devs made everything hit super hard so you'd die a ton to give the illusion of longevity. The crashes on PS4 (that SAME spot got me at least 4 times).
    BUT
    I think The Surge is an excellent game and that Deck 13 learned immensely from Lords of the Fallen and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of "souls-like" games.

      I agree with you. I can't wait for the 2nd game. Hopefully they make the movement more crisp and potentially add more playstyles. The games very well put together and balanced the right way most of the time. Defeating enemies is satisfying as hell

      Agreed with all. It's not the best game ever made, but it's a fun diversion while in the middle of a Fromsoft drought. And the setting of the game is different, if not boring and samey after the first handful of hours. I'd definitely recommend it for under a tenner.

      Also 1. Lords had bigger budget & also Deck13 doesn't own it

      Or: People are just accustomed to the thing they like and if anything comes along that is a bit different they hate it because it isn't like the thing that did the particular style of gameplay first.
      I bet that if The Surge was the first "Souls" game (Surge-game?) and Dark Souls came out after it, people would criticise Dark Souls to no end for its combat.
      I do agree though that the Souls games have much more depth than people give them credit for.

      If The Surge was the first "Souls" game, there would be no such thing as a Surge-Like. That'd be the end of it. No one would try to replicate it.
      Also, Nioh and Let It Die do a fine job making a good combat system that's "Souls-Like," it's other areas that they disappoint people.

    I know i'm a year late to the video, but i've been getting back into The Surge lately and been having a ton of fun. I think one of the things most wrong about the game isn't actually the game, but the player. You can hear it in almost every review of the game. The problem is that people come into it with a Dark Souls mentality. They're so ready to criticize every minor detail that's similar to Dark Souls, but not exactly the same (the way they like it/want it to be), or maybe not as good (by their expectations). This is the easiest way to ruin and gimp your gaming experience. I played The Surge with an open mindset. I did not expect anything. I did not compare anything. I took it at face-value. I judged the game for what it was, and never once tried to compare it to games within the same genre. What did i get? A great game, with fun combat, a decent story, and a very fun way of "leveling" your character.
    At the end of the day, if you were unable to enjoy this game because you constantly found yourself comparing it to something else, then that's really your own fault for being unable to open your mind a bit.
    **I'm not speaking specifically to you, but rather using "you" as a general term.

      Okay but the problem is that the surge just does things worse for the most part. If I'm used to better then of course I'm not going to enjoy it. Basically what you're saying is having to lower your standards in order to be able to enjoy this game, which might actually be the biggest insult this game has received in this whole comment section.

    • @Thranduil606
      @Thranduil606 Рік тому

      @@brent8407 No i'm saying don't come into this game expecting it to be Dark Souls. The problem with the DS community is that as soon as a game sort of looks like DS but doesnt feel and play exactly like DS, they criticize it and call it a shit game. If you buy a BMW and complain that it doesnt drive and feel the same as your old Merc, you're the idiot. Not the manufacturers of the car. Sure both of themhave wheels, and both of them are designed for the same function, but they are constructed differently using different parts.

      Money. Well, Nioh did it because that character was always the plan, before it became a Souls-Like. But LotF and Surge do it cause they're too cheep to figure that out. That's what I have to assume, anyway, because the characters they gave us are such ass, that no one could have been sitting there, thinking, yea, this guy's the hero, he's cool as fuck.
      Please look forward to Code Vein, which is already confirmed for Character Customization.

  • @jesse9538
    @jesse9538 7 років тому +78

    So.. I never had ANY of the mechanical issues you've talked about. I've had only one crash my entire playthrough. Targeting bodyparts (on PC at least) was super easy and I didn't have any issues with it. The environments change within the last two areas in the game and so do the enemies (and NG+). The difficulty didn't feel unfair to me. As long as you took it slow and pulled 1-2 enemies at a time, you were fine. Dodging and healing was fast and that helped with fluidity and made it easier.
    You have to remember.. this isn't a Souls game. If you go in with the mentality that it is a Dark Souls clone, you WILL be disappointed and you will hate the game and its creators because of it. The game has nothing in common with Dark Souls aside from the fact that it is an action RPG with a stamina bar and a currency that is obtained from consumables and killing shit. The combat is unique; implants are unique; obtaining gear, story, setting, weapon proficiency, the way NG+ works plus more are all unique to the game. If you're going to compare it to anything, compare it to Lords of the Fallen, as that was this company's previous game.
    The only thing I actually agree with you on is that Warren is a boring character, and to an extent, the lack of enemy variety. The story of The Surge itself is great and gets super dark near the end, but the character is boring. As far as the whole "oh the environments never change" complaint.. That's just not true. The first area/Central Production B is completely different to the Biolabs which is something totally different from D&R, which is different from Executive Forums and that looks completely different from the Launch Site. You have to remember, this entire game takes place on one huge complex, so there's only so much variety they can have and they did really well with it. I'd rather have a coherent game than a varied level design that doesn't make any sens (*cough*DS2*cough).
    As far as the lack of enemy variety.. That is there in The Surge, but it isn't as prominent as it is in every other action RPG. There are new enemies in every single zone.. stuff that you haven't fought before. It's more varied than 90% of the entire genre is.
    tl;dr If you expect it do be a Dark Souls clone you will be severely disappointed. It's a great, coherent game with unique mechanics and is a huge step up from its predecessor.

      I just say. Elevator into a small envirmoent with the those terminator like Enemys right there.
      This part in Creo ONE took me over 1 hour to get past since im a very defensive player. After using the staff and a few jump attacks it was easy tho. But the Game has some unfair placements.

    • @ChuckPalomo
      @ChuckPalomo 7 років тому +4

      I agree with you, except when you said this game has nothing in common with Dark Souls. It's clearly trying to be a Dark Souls clone, even copying some of the bad stuff from that game, like the save system, or the forced difficulty increase on NG+. Nevertheless it's a good game on its own right.

    • @SilverSpades100
      @SilverSpades100 7 років тому +4

      So its combat and currency systems are similar, but that isn't enough to warrant a comparison with Dark Souls? I'm so sick of this argument where people arbitrarily restrict which games you can compare to other games because they don't like it when games they enjoy are criticized.

    This game is actually good and I'm enjoying the first 6 hours.
    I don't agree when people say it's a dark souls clone then go on to say it's enemies and level design is uninspired. Because so far, these things and very new and I've never seem the industrial mech style in ANY game before. How many people looked at dark souls and saw just another midevil high fantasy game about demon's and Knights. (I know it's not) but people still could call it uninspired if they wanted to just because they've seen a movie, or a book, or any other game do it before.
    Oh, and I think paragon hated this game before picking it up. I've seen almost all of his previous videos and every mention of the surge never told me he was looking forward to the game.

    • @CC42_
      @CC42_ 7 років тому +1

      Your enjoying the first six hours. Every single review acknowledges that the game starts off great. They then always say the game gets monotonous with enemies, environments, and backpacking after that initial honeymoon period wears off. Shouldn't you maybe wait longer before you start criticising his review considering you're only 6 hours in and he's played through the entire game?

    • @theepowerful
      @theepowerful 7 років тому

      Well that's every game. In order to get stronger weapons in Dark Souls you'll be farming enemies for titanite. Even tho the game has different environments, it's not much considering you don't really interact with the environments. You're constantly fighting enemies that are more or less the same enemies you fought in the previous zone - except they're either bigger or smaller, sometimes they're your size. The best thing Dark Souls had going for it was its lore...

    • @Lambtomo
      @Lambtomo 7 років тому +2

      It's kinda strange that reviewers say that later the game gets monotonous with enemies, environments and backtracking, when later in the game it introduces even more varied enemies and environments than the start and middle part, as well as taking away the need to backtrack at that point... and even if you still wanted to do that to maybe explore other areas again or something, they put a freakin' train station there that takes you back to the second area, which is interconnected to all other areas of the game in a lot of shortcuts.

    I honestly feel like we can't look at this game like a souls like and just enjoy it as a stand alone, i love it, I haven't been able to put it down, doesn't really feel clunky, it feels more like bloodborne if we're comparing it.
    My thing is I went into it with a completely open mind, I made it a priority to learn the mechanics
    (although I did edit the button placements to match the souls button placements, which you can do in the menu if it's that important to you as it is to me)
    I'd give this game an 8 out of 10 honestly, now as far as replay value idk it doesn't seem like a game that would give me any incentive for playing it twice.

    i know im 2 yrs late but im so goddamn thankful that you mention this "when you press the button twice, you somehow do a 3 hit combo??" because i literally stood there at the beginning (and everytime i found a new weapon type) and testet around what buttons i need to press in which order (and also on which body part since weapon arts slightly differ if you hit from a different angle like left arm instead or right arm) so i can guarantee my self a 2 hit combo... i was sick that i get stuck in way too long hit combos and get punished during a time you are animation-locked.
    heres the best e.g i can come up with: lets say you dodge an enemy attack, wanna do 2 hits and back off: dodge, press r1, press r1 again and what??? he still swinging??? get hit
    or: press r2, press r2 again and back the f off cause thats how the r1 should work too but it somehow doesnt since warren is trying fancy shenanigans swingity swooty i coming for that booty
    BUT thats my only issue with that game, yeah i get frustrated when i get one hit or 2 shot but to be fair i feel like this whole "insane dmg" stuff just boosted my learning curve to the moon, my first encounter to an enemy always seem so frustrating, and then i really 5 mins later "oh wait i could do this with eyes closed now", dont get me wrong im only a souls veteran that plays since ds1, not an epic progamer that can challenge run any souls game, but fuck yeah i feel like i could challenge run dis son of a gun now (at least until first nanite masses appear i hate these nonsens enemies so much).
    but overall i love the surge really nice game and yeah probably my humor is just easy to be pleased since tbh i chuckled at the dialogue of irina since i really thought "hey thats well thought of"
    maybe the only critique i can give: these orange hallways with exo lifts were used wayyy to often but again to be fair: the one that breaks throu and leads to the new are caught me offguard as heck i was extremely shocked / surprised and literally flinched :D

    Some of the issues you pointed out were PS4 related. I played it on PC and I didn't encounter any crashes, bugs or glitches. In fact, the game runs around 70fps most of the time for me. Also, using the mouse wheel to target body parts hardly takes anytime so again, that's a PS4 issue. I think the only real problem with the game is the artificial difficulty where 1-2 hits from normal enemy AI can sometimes kill you. Besides that, I'm loving it. Not sure why all the hate...

    So, few things I've learned about the game while playing it that I really like:
    1. You can craft armor at the level of the components you have. Want to make MK IV armor without having to upgrade to it? Totally an option.
    2. You can upgrade lvl 1 stuff straight to level 4 stuff without having to do the imbetween steps. This solves a lot of grinding problems that plague DS.
    3. The way that the soul items are handled is awesome. You just hold one button and it uses them until you stop. Way better than how DS does it.
    4. You don't get spammed with extra armor pieces from looting enemies. You get a schematic the first time, and after that you simply get components.
    5. You can equip whole sets at once by just holding the button to equip.
    6. You can break down armor sets if you wish. Same for implants.
    7. You get a weapon only if you don't have it already. This means not getting 100 of whatever weapon from looting enemies.
    Most of what the Surge does better than DS are strictly quality of life improvements, but they do add up some. No, it's not as good as Dark Souls, but it's still a really fun game.

    I'm playing on the Xbox and haven't had any technical problems, fyi. I'm also quite enjoying the game, it adds a lot to the genre and the combat us fast, fluid, and very tight as far as I'm concerned. The plot and dialogue is pretty awful and I wish I could customize the character, too... but I don't play these games for the plot anyway. If anyone is curious about it, I think this review is a bit unfair.

  • @Lithaleon
    @Lithaleon 7 років тому +5

    Going to write my comment as I watch the review. First comment, the combat is different and you think it shouldn't be because it came from a "souls background." I don't know if you expected them to legitimately copy paste or what, but yes, the games are made by 2 separate companies, so it's going to feel different. Second off, in this game, and in any souls game, the argument that this (insert weapon type) isn't good against (insert boss) is not an argument for that boss being unfair. I agree the characters and the general story were far too cliche. Yes, the level design was probably one of this games strongest points, even if it did get visually repetitive at times.Yes the bosses were a bit underwhelming, but the developers themselves did state that they were not the focus of the game. I'm just going to skip the comments about difficulty, it's too subjective. I didn't have much issue after the initial learning curve, so I don't see where this is coming from. Yes, blocking seems like it's more of a "if you have to" rather than a universal tool for survival like Dark Souls 1. But that's okay. I don't like using shields in the souls series anyway, and that shows that this is a subjective topic. I agree with the 6 out of 10 but for different reasons that you didn't touch base on, or didn't go into. I give your review a 4/10. Mostly subjective, some objectivity. Needs improvement.

    Easy boss guide for the surge
    1.stay near it's leg and if it turns dash in between it's leg. Once it's down due to its own rockets swap to a single rigged and do a easy combo
    2.bait one of it lts leg but keep your distance so when it spin you can get a easy escape. When it has three legs, bait the single leg spin and base slam so you can have a open window to slide and smack it's middle box
    3. Wait for one of the arms to dash towards you then slide. Take down the four smaller arms then wait for the big sister to have an open window to slide, if it's covering it's self then go behind it
    4. Have the concussive drone with you and use it once you have the chance or wait for him to end his combo (if you think he's done or not sure of it on your first go then don't try to hit him) . The robot is the same as the first boss but you need one of his legs to be up to being him down, and make sure to fill his yellow bar up to make him shoot rockets at you, but make sure your at the big white container with the red light on it if you don't want to fight more of them.
    5. Stay near the left and dodge his big hand when he attacks, after that you can slide in. Once all of his legs are red go to the circuit and power it. Bait his slam keep doing this, but do it fast enough to execute him
    (if you don't play the game you might be very confused on WTF I'm talking about)

    This video makes me sad, mostly from all the comments not giving the Surge a chance because of valid criticism that gets interpreted as a full fledged review.
    A disclaimer is that I haven't played the Surge, I'm fully intending to once I'm able, my only experience is seeing it from some gameplay videos. I am of the opinion that judging a game without actually playing it is like judging a movie with your nose, so I am fully approving of this being used against me, but I'd still like my points to be considered.
    I have played Lords of the Fallen though, and hated it, so don't take this as a bias for the devs.
    I'd like to defend two points, and potentially a third. The first two is the character, and the writing. The potential third is the damage of the bosses.
    - The character customization for one is a design choice, as much as the LotF and Surge devs do mimic Dark Souls combat, its branched out from there, especially in the Surge, in a positive way, so to pull it back to Dark Souls standards although warranted is sometimes unnecessary. Yes, the combat can be expected to be fluid and fluent, the world however and its general theme of atmosphere can and should vary, lest no deviation be accepted and it just produce a literal Dark Souls clone, to which why would you even play it since NG+ exists.
    I like Warren's design, not because its particularly intriguing or interesting for any reason (though I do like the crippled touch, but for different reasons) its that he's shaved, and short haired, and so easily lost inside the exo-rig he's using. He's basically inconsequential. He's not to be related to, he's designed to be used as a surrogate while providing a brief tether to the story of the world and allowing the developers to focus onto a linear path without needing to be overly open ended. Which is good. It's different, and if its what the devs want to do let them do it, since it doesn't really hinder the game in any sort of way besides culling an expectation the game didn't promise in the first place.
    It's like expecting to be able to get out of your car in a racing game, admittedly it may improve the experience but its a whole lot of work and design and effort to a concept that isn't really integral to what the game is about anyway.
    You may argue this is a role-playing game and I'd agree since the concept of that is vague, but then what's the point of having defined characters at all. To provide an interesting narrative, sure, but then come concepts like Master Chief, who are surrogates whilst still maintaining character, a tether to the world and still able to be played without being moulded to fit what the player wants them to be.
    - The second is the writing, though not in its entirety, I'm only aware of Irina's dialogue. This is someone who hates feminazis ( I deeply respect real feminists. The ones concerned about actual gender discrimination like rape, pregnancies, domestic abuse, economic skews, etc. I don't give a damn about virtual representation ) and I like the parallel the character draws from my impression so far.
    Yes she may not be the most enticing, original or interesting character to most, but as far as I see it she's supposed to be a mirror to feminazi characters, her quips on men are over dramatic and then followed by a much more serious contrast. She's joking. In her position with roaming psychotic killers around any type of humour is appreciated, and it feels like the humour is for her own sake rather than to whom she's speaking to, which alludes to some character integrity and not just a voiced facet that revolves around the player character.
    The last part is the most blatantly feminazi but she obviously doesn't believe it, and its only considered out of place because of the general feminist stigma we have today. A male character saying the same thing wouldn't bat an eye. That and the voice acting aptly delivers a contrast of voice at the very least, and subjectively I quite like her accent.
    I'm not giving the writing any medals, I'm not telling you its great, but its okay. It's alright. Average. Nothing to get upset about, in the very least.
    Although there were some line deliveries that were rather bland from what little gameplay I saw, but this video's specific example was not that, and quite admirable in general in terms of character writing.
    - The potential third is the damage, and my most weakest point because I have no gameplay experience for myself. But. The game goes for more Bloodborne than Dark Souls, and from what I saw it had a tinge of.. more realism, for example the weapon scavenged from the first mech boss was the same size it was when the mech was using it and was not downscaled like it would have been in Dark Souls, which implies to me that just generally its trying to set a tone that veers to the more realistic. On that note, the combat is faaaar faster than it was in Lords of the Fallen and like what I said about the 'realism', the bosses are expected to be heavy hitting too. Now, that's no excuse for being two shot, and I'm not aware on if that's the case throughout the game. If it is, that's just poor design. Three shotting, on the other hand, is perfectly fine. It's how I operated on all my Souls playthroughs essentially when facing bosses, and I've beaten all of them, and since this is forced to draw Souls comparisons ( not all of them are unwarranted ) then one of them may just be that it gets the same difficulty.
    I am aware that Paragon said that four or five hits feels like his fault, I'm fully approving of that, I'm just wary on the extent to what people consider as being unfair, because three hits ( as long as it isn't a combo ) is fine.
    ---
    That's everything I have to say. I know this is UA-cam, I know lots of audiences are not the most open minded or polite of people but I'd like to regard the content creator at the very least to be open to criticism of criticism, and the people who watch him to be of the same mentality.
    Everything I didn't mention I either agree with, or my disagreeing is purely subjective, so not worth mentioning.

    The main bug/ glitch for me- when dying (The game over screen)- if you hit quit and reboot, you respawn prior to the fight you lost, with all your scrap, meaning absolutely no risk/reward. It takes absolutely no time to reload the game so, was i going to run all the way back to my corpse or just wait for a minute? I would do it automatically. On PC there is a Quick save and quik load feature (WTF!)... Souls constantly saves progress, this game saves progress after winning a battle. Nioh, (i think) only saves at shrines, so rebooting that upon death is pointless, because all of the resources you earn will not be saved. I have asked the devs about this and they said that they may fix it in a later patch.

      Same thing can be do in Salt and Sanctuary, yet, the game got a high risk-reward system if you play it properly. Plus The Surge can troll your attempt of Alt+F4 because in some cases the enemies respawn and you get in the middle of the fucking battle with 4 or 5 enemies hitting you at the same time no matter what you do, you would die in the 99.9 percent of cases (Believe me, i'll do that trick and sometimes i prefer to lose the tech scrap and go back for it than try to dodge like a docen of hit at the same time).

    Step 1: Scrap Generic
    Step 2: Write a damn good story
    Step 3: Hire some good unique sounding voice actors to drive through the dialogue and story. SCRAP GENERIC!
    Step 4: Make the main character friggen really cool/Non Generic!
    Step 5: Make the world immersive as hell through it's detail and flow.
    Step 6: Make the combat smooth, fast and satisfying
    Step 7: Make alot of ways to progress your character and give individuality.
    Step 8: Make sure there is alot of numbers and stats so we can geek out.
    Step 9: Make enemies intelligent and look very scary.
    Step 10: Tie it all together and refine it to create that perfect symphony of ingredients.
    Alot of these games only get half of these things right and it always falls short from reaching the games true potential. If these developers would just focus equally on all these aspects to create that ultra immersion they would be sitting on a gold mine! Bloodborne is a great example of when you nail all these things and more.

    Game is getting overall great reviews especially for such a new company on the AAA scene. On top of that you can't be like oh I hate it cause it both is and isn't souls... The game took DS combat formula and made it it's own. In my opinion it's often better. On top of that the story is actually really interesting, and easily more relatable than DS. Is the story better? About the same in quality overall.

It almost feels like you aren't in control of what your character is going to do next, so you don't know what you are actually committing to with each attack button press. Exactly! It looks and feels like two attacks, but it occurs on a single button press, so it was really throwing me off at times. I kept trying to dodge cancel after the first hit, which obviously doesn't work because it's technically a single attack, as you've said.

    I agree with a lot of what you said. The biggest downfall of this game is the voice acting and the main character being a dud. The bugs and glitches, on PC at least, are few and far between. Then again that's my experience, but bugs can be patched. It's a very fun and the combat/difficulty is terrific. I didn't find it cheap at all, it isn't hard to pick up on wind-up animations and move-sets and learn how to survive better. Its a solid 7/10 imo despite its downfalls.
    Also the staves are a mess lel.

      Fighting the same enemies is not an issue in dark souls. You can put together the entire enemy cast of witcher, skyrim etc and you will still have less enemy types than dark souls. I do think that paragon is being overly negative since the game is at least better than DS combat wise.

Of course, I can just sacrifice half of my implants slots to health boosts, but to be honest it is pretty stupid. What I especially did not like about that is that they created whole system of combo fighting, but you can't even use those combos, because if you try to land more than one hit at a time you get hit, and thus killed. To be honest, it felt like my character did not develop through the game at all, like he was made out of paper instead of all that metal he was wearing.

I just think one shots in games needs to be fair, predictable and counter-able - I feel the a lot of the enemies in The Surge are fair because they have well-telegraphed attacks whereas a terrible example of one shotting would be trying to fight Ceaseless Discharge legit and having him constantly double swing that's stupidly hard to avoid thanks to the godly tracking on the second strike.

      Those wacky issues he experienced with the PS4 Pro are a shame (it's been running perfectly on PC so far). But, everything else is just saying "meeeeeeh" for the sake of it. Dialogue and characters are fine (I actually quite liked Irina), but saying flat-out that they're what went wrong is a wasted point (because what are "good" voice acting and "writing?")
      The environments do not look at all the same. They're cohesive. You don't go village->dungeon->poison->fire->forest->castle. You go junkyard->production->bio labs->R&D->security->executive forum->launch pad. These environments are the same like all of DOOM's or Prey's environments are the same. They're just all parts of the same facility, but each zone clearly serves its own unique purpose in the facility. And they look and feel different as a result.
      And, you getting one-shot in this game should inspire a different approach (i.e. learning). Rebuild your character (which you can do whenever you want, thanks to implants and gear). If you're getting nailed in one hit, then it's because you're not good at dodging the thing that's killing you (or blocking it, or parrying it, or dodge/countering it). So, install some health implants and put on sturdier gear. I'm at the end of the final zone, right now, and that approach is letting me tank plenty of hits before I die.
      I rebuilt myself completely for Black Cerberus, for example. I was running single-rigged tank (Probeus armor) with the estus-style injectable and a bunch of health and stamina boost implants. I was too slow and easily using all my estus before the fight was over. I changed all of my gear, implants and weapon. One-handed with the Gorgon armor. Optimized for stamina and energy generation. Took away extra health and the estus. For life regen I went the implant that converts energy to health. Super fast, dodge-heavy build that had me refilling my health after every few hits and jumping in for a poke every chance I got. Took me two tries with that new build to beat him.

    I mean I really have no issues locking on the body parts I want instantly, and in general I really enjoy this fresh take on the souls combat. I feel their combat system is highly overlooked by many, and for good reason: as a soulslike game we inevitably compare it, and in that we lose to see the game for what it is itself. Seeing it as it's own game, and a combat system where, similarly to DS, you have quite some depth to explore to figure out the bigger picture, made me approach it's combat in various ways, and along with that how some functions work (impact, elemental, etc.)
    It's combat system has more than just a few differences, and really takes time to figure out how to fight properly. To remind a few ppl, DS's combat system is not unique, and in NO way the first to introduce ANY of it's combat moves. Dodge n roll was in many other games before, as well as parry and variation of movesets depending on your weapon. DS made them matter on a huge scale though, and that's what made it different. The fact that rolling now actually does something, because in no other game did I ever have to use it.
    That made the first 2 DS games have a combat system where very few ppl (for the time) realized in depth, in fact it took Bloodborne for most to even think the games can be played w/out a shield, to name just one aspect.
    I very much enjoy this game though, I think for the time being it's the best soulslike and a HUGE step up for Deck13, but yeah I don't think I'll do more than 5 or 6 playthroughs, this is significantly smaller as a game, but you gotta realize how small a team they are for such a great game, and no clue how it runs on consoles, but it runs impressively well on my pc, better than any other game of it's grade in my library

The only thing that's in your mind (and most souls fans), when trying out these other games is "please be like souls, please be like souls, please be like souls." I won't be expecting any new game expanding this new genre to ever satisfy you. Plus, it doesn't help how much you're emotionally attached to the franchise.

    honestly, while not having that many different types of areas, it is an industrial factory setting. that alone limits environment. It does get hard remembering every path to every areas as it does get confusing based on area, its still understandable the setting in general. I agree that the main character wasnt much, he was more a tool to experience the world rather than be a part of it. While he can get annoying hearing him so much, Don Hacket was a well done spokesperson through out the game. I actually felt something for him when you actually find him. Don sets the atmosphere of this is what it should be, this is what we dream of, all while you are surrounded by the shady side of big business. I played the game on PC, only ran into one bug and that was in the R&D area where i couldnt pick up an audio log. If you come into this game with out the preconceived notions of you wanting it to be a darksouls game then you already doing yourself and this game a disservice. You can argue price to a degree, but its a $45 dollar game. its not selling for $60, i would say no to this game at that price. but $45, you can justify both sides of the coin, and if it goes on sale then i give it a yes to buy.

      walkoprops2 Try fighting multiple enemies at a time. Lock on system goes wacko and you can't fast switch between enemies. Also feels like when you attack, it auto locks on even when you don't want it too.
      Camera is also unresponsive, and laggy as all hell in combat especially when locked on.
      God awful system man..God awful.

    • @walkoprops2
      @walkoprops2 7 років тому

      The camera controls could've been a lot better, I agree with you on that, and there should be a way of "taunting" an enemy to attack you. Like throwing a pebble (like in Bloodborne) so you don't have to bait out each single one slow as hell only to be ambushed from behind. The little robot-thingy can do that, but I like him to ram enemies, and I don't want to switch in the menu each and every time I need to do that...
      Btw, doesn't Dark Souls has an auto-lock on enemies when you kill them as well? You can toggle it off there I believe, so I hope they patch in an option like that in The Surge sometime in the future :)
      It could have been worse. It's not perfect, nor rottenly bad at least :)

    No, that's the oldest game designing trick in the book. If you can't seem to make an enemy AI versatile to make them challenging, just up their health or their damage output. That, or copy paste them a whole much and have the player dealing with quantity, not quality. It's exactly as you said it, "cheap."
    (Although, we'd be lieing to say From Soft has never been guilty of this, and not just in DS2... 🙄).

    the game is not perfect but its pretty damn good! the enemies have subtle changes and you need to change your play style to defeat them, on ds3 you just R1 spam 90% of the enemies. the level design is a lot better than Ds3 too where DS3 feels like you are just walking straight like call of duty and The surge is more like Metroid or the first DOOM. one big thing they did right and Dark souls 3 didnt was making exploration fun.
    maybe the ps4 version sux but The Surge on pc is more stable than DS3.
    and to me the controls are more responsive and less clunk than DS3, I got used to it really fast (but I changed the layout a little bit so I dont use item instead of dashing and etc because I still play dark souls XD)
    its a big step on the right direction they just need a better writer/director I heard one time "there’s no such thing as “Bad Movie Ideas,” only stories poorly told".
    so far the game did more right than wrong and Im having a lot of fun.

      I've got the Surge on PS4, as of yet I haven't noticed any issues. The one and only time I had any sort of technical oddity was when I kited an enemy too far and made it so that it couldn't walk back to its spawn point when it passed the threshold that tells it to return (I'll admit I wanted to see what would happen). The game removed the enemy and placed it back at its spawn point in that case, and that was literally it.

      I don't know Dark Souls 3 has some cool level design, I think it's because I find it more horizontal that it feels less interesting compared to DS1's vertical level design. But still I think The Surge does do some things better than the Souls series - i.e. I actually like the fact that there are less bosses that are distinct, I feel it really lets the levels breathe in all of their labyrinthine glory compared to the Souls games where you have smaller gauntlets that all choke off at the boss' fog door over and over.

    Wow, I just finished the game and couldn't disagree more with everything you said in this video. The environments look fantastic. I haven't seen such good sci fi art design since Dead Space. And they're pretty varied within the realm of what a futuristic industrial center can be. The Biolabs, Central Production B and the Executive Board are pretty unique from one another. Sure, it's not as different as a floating medieval castle is from an underground cambodian lava city, but it's trying to keep a consistent theme, which I can appreciate.
    And the combat is rather fair as long as you try to learn how to deal with every move the enemies can use separately. Enemies and bosses that at first I though impossible became pretty fun and doable after a couple tries. And them 2 shotting you is not much of a big deal when you've got instant healing items. I'd say the only completely unfair move in the game is the jumping slam attack the security guards can do, cause it has no telegraphing and does shitloads of damage (might be more manageable on high stability builds, I use medium). Also, staves are awesome. Some of their attacks are multi-hits, but that just means they're more useful in certain situations than others.
    And what's that about backtracking? the only forced backtracking is when you go through Central Production after R&D in order to get to Security, and that's just a small section of the level, not the whole thing. Maybe you could also count those 10 feet you walk to get to the circulation tower, if you wanna get technical. The dialogue is pretty standard videogame stuff, nothing I'd throw shit at the game for, and the inability to create your own character? that seems more like a disagreement with a design choice than a flaw of the game itself, like if you preferred a silent protagonist to a talking one, or playing a female instead of a male. I don't know man, your complains just seem petty. I'll shit on Lords of the Fallen any day, I despise that game, but The Surge was a pleasant surprise.

    I've bought this game recently and I am finding it extremely enjoyable. The gamebreaking glitches appear to be a PS4 thing as the game only crashed twice in my Xbox One (once in the Biolabs and once in the Nucleus). The combat is by far the best aspect if the game, the combos are fluid and easy to pull off, with the only thing that can make you take damage being stamina management, something that got me killed more than a few times. Your problem with the staff was that you were trying to use it as a Single Rigged weapon. Train the whole moveset, see what attacks work best against each boss, and this is coming from someone who mained staffs throughout the entire first playthrough. Yeah, the dialog can be a bit annoying, but it gives the characters some personality. Irina's jokes get a bit grating, but that ends up contributing to her questline, as you can notice her personality changing throughout it. Same thing with Jo, with her mask dropping when you enter her lair. Yes, the story can get a bit lost in the background (heck, I went through the final parts of the game without even knowing what Project Utopia was about), but that never bothered me too much, same thing with Warren's character, I just didn't have a problem with it. My only complaint is that the game is a bit too short.

    When people talk about challenge in games it's kind of a touchy subject to me. A good challenge to me isn't creating something where the odds are stacked horribly against you, instead create a challenge that forces you to adapt to ever chancing situations but remaining fair. It's a tricky thing to make encounters that are challenging in a fair and balanced ways. It's a very fine line between unfairly hard and properly challenging. Not a surprise that so many get it wrong. The Surge did some right and some wrong. Modern or future settings always feel bad to me, by their very nature they have to reuse a lot of textures leaving a "been there done that" kind of feeling. Steel and concrete is typically the same color no mater what but bricks and stone can be made from different material. Not saying The Surge is horrible but setting wise I kind of figured it wasn't a game that was worth more than a rental for me personally. Right now I'm waiting for something to come along that marries the combat of Nioh with the balanced challenge and design scope of a FromSoftware Soulsborne.

They give you a tool to make the character unique, and immediately take away all individuality, and on top of that what does it add?

I have 72 hours played time on that game and i still have a lot to do in the world but i can't be bothered anymore, hell i don't even care about the dlc. On the other hand i have nearly 400 hours on Dark Souls 3 and i can make a new character and play thru the game again any day i like, it doesn't even take too long. I respect your opinion about the main character but i like a game where i can concentrate on actually playing the game most of the time and not on my characters backstory, the story can and should be there but it shouldn't interfere much with the gaming.

    During my first 2 playthroughs, it crashed my PS4 a total of 10 times. It had the lovely bonus of respawning me dead several times if there were enemies nearby at the time that had the opportunity to kill me before the game even loaded and allowed me to move. In conjunction with my most recent set of playthroughs, I'd say the game crashed at least once every 2 hours overall. I found most enemies fair - except for the Nanite blobs in the Nucleus. They were BS to kill due to the unresponsive and inconsistent kill command prompts and the fact that they basically became roaming death screens on NG+ higher playthroughs. I've had and seen Core 150+ characters die to a single one in less than a second, if not literally instantly, with practically every HP mod/implant.
    Overall, I think there was a lot of potential. It's like each piece made sense and worked perfect in a vacuum...but developers never actually play-tested everything together after. Fantastic core ideas...let down by mediocre final execution. I really hope Surge 2 has fixed the issues.

    I personally liked the game, but I do agree there is many small, and big things that need to be added or changed in order to concrete the experience, especially for others who would of dropped the game because of them. Firstly, the game needs some kind if navigation UI or menu, all the areas in the game look too similar and unless you keep on running through the same shortcut, you can have a hard time going anywhere in any of the levels. I'd prefer it if there was a map in menu but you have to explore areas in order to uncover its fog of war, or an implant that allowed you to track your own progress some, sort of like bread crumb system.
    You mentioned blocking being pointless, but after noticing what the staff security enemies do (they raise their weapon in a block stance and move around and deflect your next attack and slam the ground), I learned you can infact do the same. Blocking at the right time acts as a kind of parry and from what I can tell this works with most enemies, even mechanical ones, and it makes the combat with certain enemies much more tolerable and even fun. Also, your attack immediately after blocking an attack or parrying it will allow you to do some pretty great counter damage, again making fighting enemies much easier. There's back stabbing in the game as well, but from what I tried it's not always consistent, that or the hitbox window for it is very, very small on an enemies back that they have to be standing still for it to connect, if they don't turn around on you.
    The problem with these two advanced combat moves is that no where I noticed in the games loading tips or tutorial did it ever explain these even existed, I think the only one that popped up was regarding using less stamina while attacking when you time your button presses rather than mashing them. I think alot of people get put off feeling they either have to stagger an enemy into submission, or play reactively waiting for enemies to be open, parrying enemies almost makes it too easy considering some of them choreograph their moves fairly obviously, especially enemies using very heavy weapons.
    The only enemies that gave me trouble towards the end of the game were the enemies that change their armour composition as you hit them, but I like that because it forces you to adapt and change what limb you hit in order to stagger them out of their very high damage and fast attacks. But literally straight after that they introduce an enemy that just looks like a mess of moving metal and it's not easy to fight considering it can one shots you with all of its attacks, even with 3 tier III health implants at core power 80.
    The games "difficulty" curves are all over the place, at the start all the enemies are lumbering and slow, then immediately after they throw very fast moving enemies that will gank the shit out of you if you draw too many of them, then it drops down again in enemy difficulty. An easy way to handle different types of enemies is to learn what they're weak against most, organic enemies are weak to anything that can cut their limbs, or anything that can crush their heads that does fire damage, while machines are mostly only weak to things that can crush or pierce their armour, aswell as anything with electric element damage. You then use that knowledge and keep weapons favourites in your menu so you can quick swap between them with the d-pad, which is yet another thing they don't explain to you in game, that you can have multiple weapons available to you on a button prompt.
    You're number rating is fairly accurate, but even so, I still had a blast playing it, unfortunately once you learn all the tricks to fighting enemies, bosses and navigating the damn maps, the game isn't all that long, I got through it in about 25 hours, and I seriously took my time exploring everything aswell.

    This game was so fun on PC, the targetting of the limbs is easier with mouse and kb because of the mousewheel.

    After I finished Bloodborne I needed another game like it and The Surge was the fix I needed. Loved this game and enjoyed it's mechanics. Sure it's not the best out of the series but I liked that it played more like Bloodborne than the Souls series. Really looking forward to the Surge 2. Just hope Surge 2 offers a much bigger variety of enemies.

    I think this game is a good game. Crashes glitches and bugs are there but it has something good. I think this game was not really thought over through development but still it's good.

    tbh you have to figure out all the tricks... knowing when to dodge when to use implants after a while you learn the basic enemy behaviors, and honestly the combos are easy to figure out when you specialize in a weapon... for example I specialized in heavy weapons which have massive stamina drain so it was hard to finish combos when you couldnt stagger them.
    the game never explained impact but honestly getting impact up helps, especially with the lighter weapons as it lets you stager them in fewer hits (I guess stagger bar raises with each consecutive hit) the Goliath class arms are great for this. My problem was stamina drain, and for a while I gravitated to operator or sentinel armors, but eventually changed back to goliath armors after I learned how to ration my stamina better (hit hit dodge)
    As for the combat system it takes a while to get use to the targeting, but my only problem is the way you cant engage enemies fluidly... or multiple at once, since every attack moves you forward 2-3 feet and will leave you and your target 3-5 feet behind the other enemies... and AOE of attacks is limited to 180 degrees it seems even with the swirling attacks... doesn't mean it can't be done tho, I took out the birthday party in one go swinging around my big stick (bloodhound) and managed to kill them all while suffering little damage.
    I hated the beginning, and lost the story between R&D and Executive Forum... needs more story and character elements, and more enemy styles

    I've struggled through this but I'm mostly fine with it. They land you in some daft situations and some enemies hit like a truck but it does seem to have that transition where you get better at dealing with enemies. The enemies follow the same archetypes but they do change it up in the second half with some of them using the environment against you.

    The guard in The Surge- you really shouldn't look at it like the guarding in souls games. It's not really a defensive tanking move. I thought it was garbage too and resorted to just dodging, but when I started to have encounters in the vent areas I had to learn how to use it. And I found out that it's less like a block and more like a parry. It's something you time to break an enemy's combo, not something you use to turtle it. Of course there's the issue of high and low attacks but I don't really have any thoughts on that apart from how hard it is to figure out which attacks you can and can't block.

    Very much enjoing it right now on PC, no technical problems, using heavy weapon. Not yet Dark Souls but much better then Lords and have some interesting unique things about it

    I absolutely agree that this game has a tough time balancing difficulty and balance. Its definitely a step up from Lords of The Fallen but it still suffers from the same issue of that when you die you dont really learn from it, or you think you did and you go back at it and die again the same way, it can be alittle annoying.
    But my real gripe with the game is the input delay and the fact you cant cancel anything out by dodging. the input delay usual gets you with an extra attack you didnt mean to do or dodge much later then you wanted

    It's so strange seeing that crash in the sewers under the biolabs. I farmed in that area for hours and didn't have any issues. In fact, I've put ~70 hours into The Surge on PS4 Pro and haven;t had a single crash come to think of it. I wonder what the difference was that caused the crashes for yourself.
