Heads up - the shortcut for the Pen tool is (G), not (P). I had changed my keyboard shortcuts recently to make P the pen tool in After Effects and forgot to change it back. Sorry for the confusion! -Robbie
Rotoscoping is easier if you make masks separating the parts of the object. With less points to control, the easier it gets to animate the masks. And sometimes it avoids doing the work frame by frame. You can interpolate the movement, so it’s less hazle than moving multiple points frame after frame. \o/
@@Chribit can you use mask in After Effects like you do mask in Photoshop. In Photoshop you can perfectly trace any object including hair etc. using mask, can you do the same in After Effects

Hey dude, I just wanna say, I really appreciated your tutorial. I subscribed after about 1 minute of watching because I like the way you explain things, and you have an overall charisma that helps the videos flow. It's hard to find tutorials where the person explaining the process doesn't love to hear themselves talk. As a creative, I appreciate your tutorials a ton. THANKS!
very cool thank you! for the roto-brush part, i would've liked to see the "Freeze" button explained and exactly what to do when you're finished adjusting every frame that's interesting
I used to hate the pen tool, but made myself learn it and now it's easy and less of a hassle. I spent one all-nighter cutting out objects from pictures. If you can remember when and how to use the Alt/Option Key and Control/Command/Apple key, it will come together for you. THAT and how to continue a path.
sagittarius this is actually spot on. I'm very skeptical of him he puts on a nice guy act and I'm so out of the door lollll please don't give yourself a hardtime for repeating your messages you've really connected with me and im sure alot of us
It's a tutorial for beginners in rotoscoping. You're already supposed to know the basics of the program before you do specific tool tutorials. If you just look up "After Effects Beginner Tutorial," it will help you understand all of the basics of the program and what everything does in general, then you can look up tutorials for each specific tool and know what they're talking about. I hope this is useful to you
Great tip on using the refine edge tool, my only complaint is the propagating. My Lil 13inch Pro M1 fan kicked on big time to render my roto on a green background.
Good tutorial. I just wish you had magnified when selecting menu options (such as selecting "Stopwatch") as we cannot actually see anything as to what you are selecting.
Masking with the pen tool - that little grin on your face when you remind everyone to make sure to press the stop watch BEFORE you start adjusting throughout the frames. Yep, we all know that moment of realisation when you have just lost five hours of adjustments.
Another great tutorial Robbie... It looked a little challenging, but I'll give it shot and see how things turn out :-) Be well, stay encouraged, and thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for this! I'm trying to rotoscope a quick 7sec video using the rotobrush and its taking forever-do you have any recommendations on how to speed up the process? I'm on macbook pro with 16GB of memory. It seems like any tiny adjustment I make takes 5mins to "propogate" and only gets longer with each adjustment!
Hello, I want to use roto brush tool , but it doesn't work. When I choose roto brush tool and start selecting what I want, the whole video border turns purple, meaning the whole image is selected. Can you help me, please?
I followed a long like it was a step by step video. I masked my entire composition with the pen tool, frame by frame only for you to say "Or, select the roto tool" I've been had.
@gameman5804 I think the rotoscoping in your animation class will look more like this: ua-cam.com/video/TYlyaTG8RU4/v-deo.html . 2D animation rotoscoping is a bit different from compositing rotoscoping. Wish you all the best with your animation journey :)
noob question as i am a beginner in video editing... i applied the rotoscope.. how can i automatically apply it to my whole file or all frames?i have a 48 min video where in i want to remove the background. I will layer it on a different video on premiere.

hello, I am an absolute beginner. I need to take people out of vintage black and white 30's video so I can put them in my video and on still images. I tried the pen masking and track masking way. (and I am out of hair to pull). Would roto masking be the correct way? Thank you for your video.
Hi I was watching the tutorial, but noticed after you clicked the page down button, there is missing the next steps? What do you do after it processes? How do you save it? I am new to this, please let me know, also how do I get the photo I want it to go on top of? how do we mesh these two together please?
I’m having an issue with rotoscoping a clip in after effects … so I start in premiere and click replace clip with after effects composition. It brings me into after effects , I double click the clip then click the rotobrush tool , then draw what I want rotoscoped . Then I click page down to goto next frame but nothing happens!! I’ve tried so many things and nothing works! It just won’t goto the next frame so that I can rotoscope the next part of the clip …
Heads up - the shortcut for the Pen tool is (G), not (P). I had changed my keyboard shortcuts recently to make P the pen tool in After Effects and forgot to change it back. Sorry for the confusion!
