On the other hand, when bands trying something ''different'', its annoying. I mean, it is a gateway to metal. Most of my friends are more into dance and electro music and dig the shit out of Hypa Hypa when I shared it whit them. Exactly because it different from the standard dance music nowaday. As a german, I can definitely say that Eskimo Callboy is bringing people into Metal. They're pretty mainstream around here, even people who don't listen to Metal at all do like some songs by Eskimo Callboy, or at least they heard of their name. This kind of Techno/EDM style has been really popular around here since ages, there's even a german rapper who started mixing this style with rap in like 2018/2019, which caused him to really blow up and get extremely huge and successful (Finch Asozial). So I agree that the mainstream in USA might not care for this sound, but in Germany, it is definitely working.

Timing and it's also almost mandatory for reaction channels to react to them too. That's a ton of free PR and worldwide exposure. I probably wouldn't know about a bunch of bands if not for reaction channels.
Look at Lorna Shore or Slaughter To Prevail. Their music is FAR from main stream but they generate mainstream appeal from reaction channels. Those two produce mostly super dense and heavy music and the audience would normally be really niche but they are all blowing up in part because of reaction channels giving them exposure.

On the point of how they stayed relevant for so long from the POV of a german: they toured a LOT and it feels like they played almost every festival, they're more of a live and party band than a band that you listen to casually. Publicity stunts like the drummer taking part in the jungle camp and the bachelor series in Germany did also probably help in recent years. I think they only started getting more relevant in other countries since "Hypa Hypa", but they went viral at least once a year for a long time now and seem to know how to reach new audiences aswell. I mentioned the reality TV series already and collaborating with Hands of Blood, one of the bigger german lets players, was also smart imo. Goofy german Attack Attack sounds absolutely right, but they do their gimmick better than others I think, at least from what I've seen in the last ~10 years. The music goes hard, they're having fun and they have catchy tunes.

  • @rybad_

lol, the thing is, they aren't strictly a comedy band--and they write all bangers IMO. what makes the comedy is the video, if you take the video away, the song itself is just good; thats why they find such success

This band is basically random shit posting and sometimes serious songs . Its a pretty good band . With the new singer hate/love is serious song but they had some serious metal songs with the old singer ( he was more into metal than others that is one of the reason's he quit. Music was going too much into pop territory , he even hated one song they made , its a full on pop song, he went full metal with his solo project, ) They have a huge Russian fanbase . I found them through a Russian kid that went to the same school as me.

I think it’s more so that Ghøstkid wanted to make darker more serious and emotionally heavy music while the rest of Eskimo Callboy wanted to focus more on a fun/party vibe. His album isn’t full on metal; there’s also alot of hip hip, alternative, and industrial elements, and even some occasional vaguely popish moments, but blended together with the metal in a very dark and heavy way so It goes as hard as a full on metal record.

As someone from Germany, actually a lot of Normies DO enjoy Eskimo Callboy at parties, it happened to me a couple of times now that one of their "fun" songs came up at a party i was at and i went to find out who put it on, in hopes to talk to a fellow metalhead about music just to find out, that the person doesn't listen to rock music at all apart from Eskimo and Billy Talent (f.e.)
In general through, people don't care much about genre over here, it's more about the vibe, so people who are into fun party songs won't care if it's levels by avicii, fat lip by sum 41 or hypa hypa by eskimo callboy. That's at least my experience with people below 40, older people tend to stay within a certain genre way more.

They are bringing the party atmosphere from EDM and putting it into heavy music. Good for them for finding a way to stand out. It's nice to have something out here that isn't serious or trying to be evil. That's already been done.

I think they faced the decision a few years ago: be a generic metalband, one in a million playing average OK music in the genre, touring with other bands in Europe in small clubs, or do something different and creative. I suppose it was a tough decision for them, maybe it has something to do with their previous singer leaving the band. Anyway, it seems like they decided and it seems like it was for the better.
First I saw them opening for Attila here in Hungary. And although I really wanted to see Attila for years and I was really exctied for their concert, Eskimo Callboy cleary stole the show - for me at least. And I didn't even know them before the show. Since then I saw them headlining once again and I bought the ticket for their next individual show here in January which is already sold out. I think they are a great live band and without the music videos their songs are really less goofy :D And apparently they are just doing fine :)
Of course if I want to listen to something really serious dark shit I chose something else, but it think these bands have a niche for themselves. A little like Nomeansno or the Toy Dolls or Flogging Molly in their own genre. Not necessarely the best bands but they all definetely have their own sound and attitude which is great.
also I listened to pirate metal back in the day so maybe I'm not the expert here :DD
BTW I love your channels Finn, following you for years but first time commenting :D cheers from the eastern block

Interesting point of view and it's nice to see you know the band for some time. But I think you're missing one major point, the german sense of humor (quite specific, eh!) or cultural differences to say it properly. Although their songs are popular world-wide, I don't think their german goofyness translate well on the other side of the pond. What you call europop is actually what we call hardstyle, it's a specific genre of techno VERY popular in the nineties thoughout Europe especially in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and north of France. So, yeah, their silly style (gimmicky for you) is deeply rooted is european references. There's others goofy metal/rock bands in Europe (Germany, France, Italy...) you know ;)
I like their stuff for parties even though I'm not into metalcore, I'm more into black metal and doom actually but I think they're a party band for metalheads. Because over here metalheads generally don't party listening to mainstream music, they 're listening to folk metal or goofy bands for that purpose ;)
And sorry if I'm not making any sense at all with my poor grammar, english isn't my primary langage. Cheers from France !

Metal is so serious for some reason. Having some goof in the metal genre is pretty refreshing and doesnt go against what metal is. It's adding up and the more, the merrier. The song is catchy and the Pop/EuroVision style make them appart and who they are. Does this look goofy yes but they prove that in life we can be Heavy and Goofy and it's ok.

Theres nothing wrong with the comedy vibes as long as the music is good. Most metal bands these days take themselves super serious, or try hard to give off the tryhard edgy "we're so crazy" vibe, which are both just as cheesy, if not even more so than the self aware stuff eskimo is doing.
I think people these days want a more light hearted, enjoyable and fun sound.
This may be why bands like eskimo callboy and ice nine kills are starting to get more traction.

🇷🇺 Russia here. ECB played sold-out shows in Russia before covid and they are great. In Russia we like German heavy bands after Rammstein brought millions of people to German heavy music. But... ECB borrowed idea of previous video of "We got the moves" from Russian band 🇷🇺Hard Bass School 🤙"Guys" that came to UA-cam some months earlier and this vid sounds a lot like side project of Alex the Terrible from SLAUGHTER FOR PREVAIL. Check his "Barbie girl" for example. Anyway its great that ECB is on Eurovision. Hope they will make the refrerance for 🇷🇺Russia, Russian fanbase and Russian attitude.

I think "We Got The Moves" was their best song so far, the chorus is REALLY good. Even colleagues from my office job loved the song. With that being said, they still didn't enjoy the heavy parts that much and that's the problem I guess - they like the pop part and hate metal part. I personally think they write much better pop than metal songs, the combination is just some 'cheat code' to access both parts of the spectrum but I don't think they are building loyal fanbase. I just hope they don't fall into the trap of constantly creating those kinds of videos until people just lose all the interest because it isn't funny anymore.
I am not against having fun in metal or hardcore, I welcome it but it's tricky. One of few bands that did it right was ETID, they wrote some great ragers and injected them with a joke here and there. I know some people who don't like their new records because they don't have the party vibe anymore. Dude, they are like forty now... On a different note, I also found TDEP funny but in a nerdy musical way. I just found some of the random parts to be so absurd I still laugh when I hear it (For example the jazzy intersection at the beginning of Honeysuckle).

So as the metalhead in my friend group, I've actually been getting a lot of positive feedback on recent metal. I actually do think Eskimo Callboy is a much more digestible form of music. The goofiness isn't the main thing for me, it feels like they're just having fun while dressing extra. The music doesn't come across at all as a novelty gag, if anything, it feels like the videos are the only novel, goofy part.

"You're not gonna find a lot of pretty girls in them."
Uh... fam do you remember peak scene era metalcore videos at all? They were full of attractive women. The issue was that they were CRINGEY AS FUCK.
Also, Eskimo Callboy started out as a gimmick band that was basically criticizing how cringey scene music was. After the success of Bury Me in Vegas they got more serious over time with "We are the Mess" but particularly with Crystals. This is a return to the humorous parts of what they were originally doing.
And I disagree on the sound. It's not quite the same sound as 2013 Electronicore (which was albums like Outcasts, Bury Me in Vegas, New Demons, Paint Me in Light, etc. etc.). It's less of that dubstep-style EDM and more electropop.
I mean fundamentally what they are is a better version of "One Morning Left" from Finland, but way more gimmick-ey than I See Stars, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, or If I Were You.
Also, it's worth mentioning the production quality of these videos is MILES above what others in Metalcore are doing right now, and that makes a massive difference.
