And to think that when Kaede died many pissed off fans started calling Shuichi lame and boring just out of pure resentment. They didn't realize that, in exchange of Kaede, we ended up receiving the best protagonist of the whole series. Smart, kind with a soft personality, reliable, useful and more self confident (even though he doubts his talent sometimes) and with a great character development. Combine the best aspects of Hajime and Naegi and you get Shuichi.
Thank you! I love how Shuichi grew after every loss. Unlike Hinata and Naegi always have strong and trusted supporters (Kirigiri, Nanami), almost all characters in V3 have their own lies. Shuichi go through all these lies with his truth (and lie too, sometime), he fight against these important to him (Kaede, Kaito, Maki.../Shuichi kinda solo full chapter 5). Naegi is all about LOL hope, Hinata with talent and future, but Shuichi doesn't need anything, he only fight for what he believe. Shuichi is weak, crybaby, indecisive sometime... but he's smart, gentle and full of emotions (It's the first time i hear a Dangan protagonist talk about "revenge"). He is the most "human" dangan protagonist that i know, he understands how weak and strong people can be. Maybe he isn't the typical hero everybody want but he is the anti-hero i need, and because of that he is the best for me.
I love(hate) how at 15:15 when he says 'I'm weak. I'm weaker than everyone else.' he sounds like he's about to cry. There's so much emotion beyond it. No Succi, you are the strongest child in entire DR history. The strongest one is who admits self's weakness...

unabobination arts actually the previous Danganronpa Protagonists wanted to survive the killing games and they did nothing to prevent other ones from being made. So Shuichi is the first to want to prevent the killing games from ever happening ever again.
Well, yes, the other characters didn't try to stop the filling game, since they live in another reality, I think they would be fiction in the world of V3. So they didn't think another killing game would happen since both Junkos were dead. Plus, Makoto did continue trying to help the world recover from the tragedy.

YESSS THANK YOUUU. I completely agree. Ever since I started watching Danganronpa (The Gameplays with no commentary), the characters are what that made me love them more. I also agree what Shuichi says. If they win with hope, then the Killing game will go on. If they lose with despair, then it will also give a bad future. He believes that even if they are all fictional characters, even if they believe their in a fictional fandom, he still believes that everything he felt; his emotions were real. He carried on Kaede’s wish to reveal and face the truth, which he did with confidence. But I honestly don’t want them to kill each other. Every Killing game breaks my heart when they die, especially Kaede and Kokichi’s sacrifice to end that hellhole they are in. The viewers want them to choose hope or despair. When I saw that part, I completely went into an internal outrage. Yes, I know despair is bad, but hope also has a negative side. Like Shuichi said, if hope wins, the Killing game will continue. The survivors hated that their lives were being played and the audience will get the ending they want. He chose neither endings, and decided to end Danganronpa, the fictional world that forced them to kill for the audience’s “entertainment.” The characters’ development, their growth and their character themselves affected us. These characters affected us in a way that we don’t want them being hurt or being forced between decisions. We want them to believe in what they want to believe. Man shuichi was such a great protagonist, he started at zero and worked his way up, it really makes you wonder what would happen if rantaro survived and became the protagonist or at the very least, you got to control him a bit like with keebo and maki
I think if this were a normal danganronpa we would play either as Kaede or Keebo, they are your typical confident character that's not too smart but have charisma in them (hence both have ahoge the protagonist symbol of danganronpa) especially since at the end Keebo is revealed to be an instrument of Hope.
...am I the only one who loves Shuichi's voice(to a great degree)? I have so much respect for his voice actor. JP VA's are so talented... I was almost convinced that an actual dude was voicing him, (even if it's the 'less masculine' kind, I know of some male VAs who can pull off that same kind of voice) and I dunno, it sounds like an angel to me. It's probably just one of my weird voice fetishes but eh. But yes, Shuichi is precious, and I loved his character development all the way from the first to the last chapter.

I think that the reason why I like him the best is because of how emotional intelligent he is, he thinks a lot about the people who are dear to him, he is honest and through the game I can see how hard he is tying to accept himself. He is not perfect, and that's what makes him very relatable, but he is also so likeable because of his kind personality. I LOVEE THIS CHARACTER SO MUCH!!
It bugs me a lot when people say Shuichi isn't as good as Kirigiri and how he should be able to tell when Kokichi is lying or not, especially during post Ch. 4 trial. People forget that he's an apprentice and not a full-fledge detective where-as Kirigiri has been a detective most of her life with her family of detectives. Shuichi doesn't have a bullshit lie detector ability, people.

I totally agree. (I'm one year late, but I joined this fandom recently and I'm trying to catch up lol.) Anyway, I think Shuichi ended up being my favourite protag. I liked Makoto, but his whole rambling about hope nad him being a bit of a crybaby kind of ruined his character. Don't get me wrong, I really liked him as a character, but..yeah, you get the point. Hajime is my second favourite, because he actually thought things through with logic. Don't really have anything else to say about him, that's about the only thing that caught my attention. I really liked Kaede, and she would have been an amazing protag, but she was just a _bit_ too happy-go-lucky if you get what I mean? And I know she had good intentions when she was trying to kill the mastermind, but maybe she should have thought things through a little more before confirming Rantaro was the mastermind. Shuichi is such an excellent protagonist, so smart and such a sweet person. Literally amazing. Each moment he had to search for the truth and reveal it, I could feel the same way as him, it must have been so difficult to make the decisions he did. I felt so proud of him at each moment, I'm just so glad I was able to experience playing this game. I wish I could forget everything about it just to play it for the first time again.

at first when kaede died and shuichi became the protag well i felt sad (my precious kaede was dead + i ship them so hard, it broke my heart) and so weird, i just couldn't realize that shuichi was the main character. At the beginning i found him to be pretty boring as a protag but the more the story goes on the more i found him to be the best protag in the whole series. He's so pure, and so relatable, he has a lot of doubts about himself unlike naegi and hajime who were pretty confident. At the beginning he's almost weak because he's not able to face what he is and the reality he lives in. As a detective, you can't escape truth, you have to face it no matter how hard it is. And throughout the whole game, shuichi becomes stronger. With each death, he realizes that he can't escape, he can only fight and stay strong whatever happens. To sum it up: his character development is great. This is the most real protag we ever had in the whole series and this is why i consider him as the best one.
hajime I didnt like :/ he was the most negative protag ever, all emotional moments from SDR2 came from other characters (freaking TERU TERU hit me harder in the feels hajime ever did) and SDR2 killings r indirectly hajimes fault
But wouldn't person crying during in shuichi's place, I mean he IS in killing game, you know. All of his friends are dying on and on each chapter of v3 so I think it's okay for him to cry it's makes it realistic.

Anyway, I think Shuichi ended up being my favourite protag. I liked Makoto, but his whole rambling about hope nad him being a bit of a crybaby kind of ruined his character. Don't get me wrong, I really liked him as a character, but..yeah, you get the point.
Hajime is my second favourite, because he actually thought things through with logic. Don't really have anything else to say about him, that's about the only thing that caught my attention.
I really liked Kaede, and she would have been an amazing protag, but she was just a _bit_ too happy-go-lucky if you get what I mean? And I know she had good intentions when she was trying to kill the mastermind, but maybe she should have thought things through a little more before confirming Rantaro was the mastermind.

Shuichi is such an excellent protagonist, so smart and such a sweet person. Literally amazing. Each moment he had to search for the truth and reveal it, I could feel the same way as him, it must have been so difficult to make the decisions he did. I felt so proud of him at each moment, I'm just so glad I was able to experience playing this game. I wish I could forget everything about it just to play it for the first time again.

at first when kaede died and shuichi became the protag well i felt sad (my precious kaede was dead + i ship them so hard, it broke my heart) and so weird, i just couldn't realize that shuichi was the main character. At the beginning i found him to be pretty boring as a protag but the more the story goes on the more i found him to be the best protag in the whole series. He's so pure, and so relatable, he has a lot of doubts about himself unlike naegi and hajime who were pretty confident. At the beginning he's almost weak because he's not able to face what he is and the reality he lives in. As a detective, you can't escape truth, you have to face it no matter how hard it is. And throughout the whole game, shuichi becomes stronger. With each death, he realizes that he can't escape, he can only fight and stay strong whatever happens. To sum it up: his character development is great. This is the most real protag we ever had in the whole series and this is why i consider him as the best one.
