  • A brief view of the common issues with Jaguar 4.0L timing chains. I show the difference between the old plastic tensioners versus the new aluminum and also show some other issues as well as some of the tools needed.

    You mentioned that the timing is set at TDC but from what I remember during the development of the engines over 20 years ago it was set at 45 degrees after TDC from cylinder 1A. Cylinder 1A is at the front of the car on the right as viewed by the driver. That’s the only position that the pin can be pushed into the drive plate through the crank sensor hole. The reason for that position is to reduce the risk of valve damage during setting the timing.

    Hey, the timing chain and tensioner tasks are rather straight, but to access the front cover of the engine, I really had to work my a... off. Removing the Aircon compressor and the power steering pump to access the holding unit for these two devices. On the opposite side the alternator also had to be removed to access the mounting unit for the alternator - both parts are horrible to disassemble due to lack of space. Another thing to remember is the pulley / vibration damper - the one with the conic locking ring is really nasty.

    When you install the primary tensioner, do you remove only the plastic pin? Is there anything else that would need to be removed?

    Hi! Will you give me advice please. I have an little oil leak from under the timing chain cover (AJ8). Mechanic says to replace timing chain cover gasket. For this action do I need to take out the engine? And do I need to disconnect the supercharger?

      Engine can stay in the car, but I'm pretty sure Supercharger has to come off.

    Sir where did you get the tools and updated components?

    • @AutohausLakeNormanDenver
      @AutohausLakeNormanDenver  10 років тому

      There are many suppliers for both tools and parts. eBay is a good source, I see the tool kits run between $200-250 all the time. I think there are chain kits as well.

    great video, you noted you would get an oil leak when the tentioner gave away, where would the oil leak happen?

    • @bernardtripp3799
      @bernardtripp3799 10 років тому +1

      The leak is internal to the engine. The issue is that when it does leak, you have a loss of pressure at the tensioner which prevents the chain from having proper tension.

      great, I just purchased a 99 with 117K miles and was told the tensioners have been replaced but no receipt, can these cars run that long without being replaced?

      Hard to predict how long one will run with the original plastic components. The best way to tell, is to pull the valve cover. Removing the cover is very easy to do, you will will be able to see if the upper tensioner is plastic or aluminum.

    Lift the cams, still connected. Slide old tensioners out and new ones in. Nothing will be adjusted and the tensioners will be right in the perfect spots. Takes 10 mins. Spend the last few hours cleaning up and putting the engine back together.

      This is the truth. Done it a handful of times. No need to invest in tools etc. now if the chain broke, or skipped a tooth...

      Swapping out the Jag engine is heresy. You shall be put to the sword by our Queen's guards !
