  • This shows the insides of my Jaguar's V8 while doing the timing system. In the video I showed how I was able to get the chain on the intake sprocket without having to remove it from the cam shaft. You DO need to remove the sprocket, otherwise the timing will be off.

    Thank you so much for the steo by step instructions and also for the parts snd tools needed aling with part numbers . I was very nervous about doing this job but like most people i cant afford the cost of a professional and anyway i love my jag and i want yo know everything about it so its a joy to fix her myself. You made this job less stressful and i truly appreciate the effort you put into making that procedure guide for us DYI. Hats off to you my friend !

    Do I need to remove the power steering pump as well as fan hydraulic pump to pull timing chain cover off? Nobody ever shows the timing chain cover removal in these videos.

      +michelle crabtree This is how it is done for a Jaguar XJ8 and XJR: jaguar.blackonyx.net/tech/timingchain.htm If you are driving an S-type it will be different. The Lincoln LS and S-type share a lot of similarities, and if I remember correctly on the LS there is a hydraulic powered fan that does need to be removed, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case on the S-type.

      I have a 2001 Lincoln Ls v8. For me yes I had to remove both because it was in the way of the timing cover to come off.

    Doing my 2000 S type now. Seems to be two bolts on the timing cover I can't get to. They are behind where the idler pulleys bolted up. What do I need to remove to get to these?

    In your post you mentioned that you went to Home Depot to purchase bolts first off that is a big mistake you need at least grade 10 bolts for a motor which Home Depot does not supply

    Adding the chain guides and primary chain tensioners will remove enough slack to add a wedge and tighten the exhaust camshaft.

    I just rebuild one of those engines. To take the slack out I set the left side chain dead on the markings I made and I installed the tensioner. Then I set the right hand intake and exhaust small chain on the marks I made before disassembly. I turned the crank one tooth back from tdc. I installed the main chain and tensioner and then returned the crank to tdc. This takes out the slack and brings everything back to the markings I made before disassembly.

      I AGREE WITH YOU...I DID MINE THE SAME WAY... BECAUSE THE MOTOR WAS MAKING A SCRATCHING NOISE..OR WHAT NOT.. ANYWAY THE TENSIONER HAD BROKEN..AND THE TIMING HAD JUMPED ONE NOTCH" THE INTAKE CAM( FLAT SIDE WAS UP..( IN TIME) BUT THE EXHAUST CAM WAS OFF ..TILTED UP...TOOK THE OLD PLASTIC TENSIONER OFF ...AND LIFTED THE CAM UP..AND WHEN I MOVED THE CAM OFF THE SPORKET...ONE LINK ..IT WAS BACK IN TIME"....PUT THE NEW TENSIONER BACK ..AND SIP TIED THE CHAIN IN PLACE...WHILE PUTING NEW GUIDES...AND STUFF ON THE BOTTOM...I WENT ON AND DID THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ENGINE THE SAME WAY...THE VVT SPROCKETS...I DIDN'T MESS WITH...I MADE SURE BOTH CAMS WERE IN TIME... REMOVED THE EXAHUST CAM UP ENOUGH TO SET NEW TENSIONER IN...WHEN I WAS DONE...I ROTATED THE ENGINE AROUND TWICE...BOTH TIME . EVERY TIME..BOTH SIDES LINED UP FINE...2001 JAGUAR XJ8...THE 3.9 LINCOLN LS...HAS THE SAME ENGINE...I BELIEVE RANGE ROVER AS WELL...V8"S...I GOING WITH A LS 4.8 SILVERADO SET UP NEXT YR...NO MORE...CAM & TIMING STUFF ...FOR ME...I DONE" 😂

STANDALONE HARNESS SET UP" AND WHEN I GET SOME TIME .THIS YEAR...IM GOING 2 GET THE 3.9 MOTOR & TRANS OUT OF THERE...All OF MY NEIGHBORS GOT 4.8" OR 5.3 LS SET UPS IN THERE CARS OR TRUCKS WITH 250.000 / 300.000 MILES FROM ENGINES THEY PUT IN WITH NO CAM TIMING STUFF OR POOR DESIGN PLASTIC TENSIONERS...😅

    What location is you’re crankshaft key at?

    • @scottjfrank
      @scottjfrank  5 років тому +2

      Top Dead Center. Remove the valve covers and look for the slit on the front of the camshafts where the cam locking tool goes into place. Once they are all lined up, you know it is top dead center and it should be easy to place the crankshaft locking tool.
      Note: the Crank shaft locking tool is to be put in an area found just behind the transmission bell housing where a plastic cover needs to be removed.
      WARNING: Do not attempt to remove the crankshaft pulley with the locking tool, you will damage it.
