      Mitch Grooms my brother had 2004 xj8 and had to replace the tensioners due to rattle at cold start. $2000 job. Do you know if 2008 xj8 has the same issue or they upgraded to aluminum guides and tensioners? Thanks

    Mine is a 98 as well ive had it 4yrs I drove it once on a long trip and now I barely drive it and seeing those tensioners I could imagine what mine look like. Your mechanic did one hell of a good job on yours. My jag is sitting right now because of this crazy Pennsylvania winter weather.

    nice Jag! I just got a 2014 JAGUAR XJL RWD V6. I hope Jaguar knows what their doing when they did mines :-) You are right, JAGUARS are under appreciated, because of high maintanace cost and not too many mechanics know their quirks

    • @MitchGrooms
      @MitchGrooms  6 років тому +1

      Max, I do not know much about the new Jags, I know TATA is the owner now but do not know anything about this company.. it will be interesting to see how it works out in the future.

      @@MitchGrooms Thanks for the video. Unfortunately it's not looking good for my 2014 XJL V6 engine Supercharged (X351) body style. I had to replace an oxygen sensor at 28k miles. Water pump and coolant outlet pipe failed at 32k miles, and know the supercharger makes a loud clattering/rattle/knocking noise when turning off the engine. Car runs great now, but I suspect the Supercharger torsional isolator and or the torsional isolator spring support shaft are wearing causing excessive backlash in the supercharger drive. Not sure if that's a catastrophic failure when it gives up and fails completely damaging the engine or if it's OK to wait for it to break, then it will be cover by my extended warranty. What you think? Best regards

    Good to see a rust free example and the colour is great, I agree with what you say about the cars being under-appreciated but their time will come.
    Strange to see the guides were so bad but the tensioners had minor marks, normally the other way round, maybe the tensioners had been replaced earlier but not the guides.
    Any way its made my mind up to do all of mine, not just the top tensioners.
    If you ever replace the hose under the supercharger can you post that as that's a job for me in the future as these often get left?

    • @MitchGrooms
      @MitchGrooms  3 роки тому

      Paul, yes change them all and the hose under the supercharger is a huge undertaking, you have to remove everything, what a stupid design

  • @MrPelletgunguy
    @MrPelletgunguy 6 років тому +1

    How much did this job cost you, if you don't mind sharing? Also, what made you do the tensioners/guide job? Did you hear the infamous rattle, or any symptoms?

    • @MitchGrooms
      @MitchGrooms  6 років тому +1

      hey, it cost me $1,875 and that included updated water pump, all belts. I did not have the death rattle but as you can see the guides were failing so it would not have taking much more miles. All tensioners finally fail at a 100% rate. They finally got the things worked out on the 2000+ models. If you have one of these cars, do not chance it. Pull off a valve cover and get a boroscope and look deep down in the engine to see if the work has been done..

    • @MrPelletgunguy
      @MrPelletgunguy 6 років тому +1

      Mmmmh I see. I may try looking down the valve cover to see if any work has been done to mine. Thanks!

    do you know if 2002 xj8 were updated to aluminum tensioner? Ughh I may need to open mine ... I had a low engine pressure pop up driving and went away .. wondering if it’s mechanic (tensioner etc) or hopefully just electronics (sensor)
