I just discovered your channel and like it very much. Thank you for your recommendations. Speaking of live recordings from Paris I would like to add "Michel Petrucciani - Au Theatre des Champs Elysees 1995" and "Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Au Club Saint-Germain 1958". My favourite live recordings in my collection are of course "Keith Jarrett - The Sun Bear Concerts", "The legendary Oscar Peterson Trio - Live at the Blue Note 1990", and "Heinz Sauer, Michael Wollny - Don't Explain (Live in Concert)".
One of my favorite live jazz recordings is something I picked up years ago on cassette tape by Duke Ellington called "All Star Road Band". (I later bought it on CD but it was mysteriously titled "All Star Road Band, Vol. II" but it had the same tracks as the cassette titled "All Star Road Band". Weird.) The fun thing about this recording is that it was recorded at a dance hall, not a sit down concert venue. The whole performance is casual, loose and full of energy. At one point Duke Ellington announces to the audience the next song they will be playing...and reminds the crowd that the bar will be closing soon as they continue to play.
Lovely video. Thanks for sharing, Katie. Ten of my favorites: ********************************* Julian "Cannonball" Adderley - Country Preacher: Live at Operation Breadbasket (Capitol) Mose Allison - Mose in Your Ear (Atlantic) Tim Berne - The Sublime And. Sciencefriction Live (Thirsty Ear) Roy Brooks - The Free Slave (Muse) Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous, Roy Haynes - Trio Music: Live in Europe (ECM) Duke Ellington - Hot Summer Dance (Red Baron) Dexter Gordon with Junior Mance - Live at Montreux (Prestige) Art Pepper - Roadgame (Galaxy) Chris Potter - Follow the Red Line: Live at the Village Vanguard (Sunnyside) Wayne Shorter - Without a Net (Blue Note)
A few to consider: Ben Webster, At the Renaissance, Wynton Kelly, Smokin At the Half Note, Sonny Rollins, At the Village Vanguard, Bill Evans, Live at Montreaux.
Here are a few I particularly recommend from my own collection: Coltrane/Dolphy, Evenings at the Village Gate; Ella & Duke at the Cote D'Azur; Jazz Couriers (Tubby Hayes & Ronnie Scott), In Concert; Jimmy Smith, Groovin' at Smalls Paradise; Charlie Watts Orchestra, Live at Fulham Town Hall. My favourites would actually be jazz fusion (Mahavishnu, Weather Report etc.) but I'll ignore those as probably being off topic.
This is a great video Katie, the live versions are truly the best. I`ve been watching jazz and blues video`s on Richard Riley`s channel and loving it. Wish my records looked as nice as yours.
Lovely selection and vibe, keep up the good work Katie. Just one thing, when you do more jazz albums, please mention the musicians, we jazz lovers enjoy that bit of geekiness ! 😃
Katie, What a great video with amazing insights. Thank you so much. My favorite live Jazz album is "Swiss Movement" with Less MaCann & Eddie Harris. It is funk jazz but an amazing performance. Another one for me is Miles Davis "In Person Friday And Saturday Nights At The Blackhawk, San Francisco" It id a double LP from 1961 and it is very exciting. Thanks again for a wonderful video.
I love Jazz but am late to it. A couple of the guys in a Discord Vinyl group I participate in are players. I’ll tell them about this video. I’m part of Randy’s Cheapaudioman bunch. You’d like chatting with a couple of these guys, very knowledgeable like yourself.
Nice video. The VERY unusual thing about the Miles and Monk LP is the Monk side and the inclusion of Pee Wee Russell. a clarinet player from quite a different era than Monk. You really have to hear what he plays. It is really out there. Whether that is because he is lost in Monk's music or that is how he really hears it is an interesting question. At first I did not care for his playing at all but over the years I've come to like it because it is, well, so out there....lol... and really dos not sound like any other sideman who played with Monk. A really great live jazz album is MJQ's Last Concert
Hello Kate. Please could you do more Jazz album videos ? I'm like you, I love the genre, but I'm not a Jazz expert, I only began buying Jazz albums (Blue Note( a few years ago.
Hi Katie - I'm with you - I love jazz but by no means am I an expert. Very first record you showed (Earl Hines) is by the first artist that popped into my mind, but for a different reason. Earl Hines & Maxine Sullivan "Live At The Overseas Press Club" was released in 1970. Maxine sings on about half the songs. Maxine has another fantastic live album from later in her career called At Vine St. Live. I love Billie Holiday; I wonder why her album covers are uniformly awful? Seems like every cover she looks like she is striving, struggling, in distress...Gilbert Milstein is the guy who wrote the initial rave review for On The Road in The NY Times...I don't know about any connection to Billie. Wow, now I really want to hear Trudy Pitts - I hadn't heard of her before. I enjoyed hearing about your favorite live recordings. One last one I'll add to the Sullivan recommendations above is Eric Dolphy Quartet: Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise, recorded 2Dec1961 in Munich with Mel Lewis, McCoy Tyner and Reggie Workman, they play 4 jazz standards. Recording quality is low but the performance is great.
i don't know a single woman who collects jazz albums and i got the karen dalton documentary after watching your video on her....i love all of the artists you discuss here but have never seen the earl hines or nina simone records...i thought i was subscribed to your channel but i wasn't and now am.
That Trudy Pitts album is awesome! Thanks for introducing me!
