“What seems to be is always better than nothing” is such a powerful, desperate sentiment
What's really sad is to think how many relationships are sustained for years by that exact sentiment.
The lead singer in this Doobie Brothers song, Michael Mcdonald has a great duet with Patty Labelle 'On My Own'...beautiful song!! Their voices are unbelievable
Half was right how the came up with the band name. 👏
"I went down south and they put Doobie in their funk"
-George Clinton
"The wise man has the power...to reason away" Michael McDonald is the keyboard and vocals on this song.
No wise man has the power...to reason away..
@Diane Malone what se-ems to b-e, is always better than nothing!
"What a fool believes he sees no wise man has the power to reason away..." Actually much deeper, and so, so true.
Tell the truth dusty. I'll just be that you can sing this song too can't ya? ;-) ;-) ;-)
🎯 If I understand right, Michael conceived the music, and Kenny Loggins is the lyricist. But that's just formality. Michael got to a point with the music before he got stuck, & that's when Kenny helped him finish writing the music. Both men collaborated over the phone to write the lyrics
"The wise man has the power" or "No wise man has the power..." works either way, musically. Anyone who can't accept that both statements can be true is just narrow minded
A great song that makes the human spirit soar
Anything with Michael McDonald is golden! He has an amazing voice, so soothing like butter 💙
Hard to believe this is the same band that came out with "Neal's Fandango." The band has gone through so many changes. Love it all.
essentially the chorus says:
A fool will always see what he wants to see.
But wise men have the power (ability) to wash that away with reason.
"What a fool believes - he sees
The wise men have the power
To reason away"
The line is: "What a fool believes, No wise man has the power to reason away"
Man ‘o man…it’s cool that the music that was just apart of my upbringing is just being discovered by you two! So the Doobies were named just for the reason y’all think. There were 2 versions of the Bros., early Doobies we’re led by Tom Johnson/Pat Simmons (Blackwater, China Grove, Long Train Running, Jesus Is Just Alright..) the second version evolved after Michael McDonald came aboard. A more refined sound (Minute by minute, It keeps you running…). What A Fool Believes won best song at the 1980’s Grammy’s and was their biggest jam! Check ‘em out this summer, they’re still touring!
Same!! 70’s & 80’s music was what I grew up with. Didn’t realize how amazing it was until now.
I love it when jai gets tickled like that! Yall are just such a fun and loving couple.
When music had meaning. ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely
Yes, Doobies! We were rather fond of them in the 70’s. 😂🤘🏼
Lol. I’m standing here in Australia doing my ironing and feeling crap and bam, your reaction has me in stitches. Thank you.
One of my faves, Doobie Bros. China Grove my all time favourite. 😂
"The wise man has the power" is the phrase you were questioning. This song is a Classic and Timeless. Michael Mcdonald, the lead singer, is a Legend!!
You two are great together and absolutely love to hear your reactions to songs from my formative years!
Full disclosure. That was the ‘70’s.
I’m a 60 yr old white man and love you guys! 👊
The lead singer Michael McDonald has collaborated with the best like Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross, Ya Mo Be There with James Ingram, Ever Changing Times with Aretha Franklin and On My Own with Patti LaBelle. He has an amazing solo career with I Keep Forgettin which was sampled for Regulate by Warren G and Nate Dogg. Sweet Freedom is another great song too!
He was also a big part of Steely Dan.
Yup that's how it went smoke a doobie and jam out lol.
Singer in this is Michael McDonald he is in center of pic
What a fool believes he sees
The wise man has the power to reason away. Love this tune y'all it's spring cleaning warm weather we made it through the winter song for me
Warren G sampled, "I Keep Forgetting", by Michael McDonald ( singer here ), during his solo career. Another great one.
Da doobie brothers is one of the best for chilling. Music you sing every word and dance every bump.
Smooooooth!
Now get up some CCR hits and some Nazareth Hair of the Dog!
Jai was having so much fun. I love it!
What A Fool Believes (Lyrics)
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don't see
Trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created
Once in her life, she musters a smile for his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize it never really was
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But a fool believes he sees
The wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him
Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But a fool believes he sees
The wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be (if love can come and love can go, then why can't love return once more?)
Is always better than nothing
(Who got the power?)
There's nothing at all (oh, now)
But a fool believes he sees (I believe she's never gone away)
The wise man has the power
To reason away (to reason away)
What seems to be (oh, if love can come and love can go, oh, mama)
Is always better than nothing (better than nothing)
And nothing at all (oh, I believe)
I think the lyrics are "what a fool believes(like the title), no wise man has the power reason away"
@@mikemiller3069 Yep
Old slang "Can you spare a Doobie, Brother?"
Michael McDonald is a legend.
"Minute By Minute" is another good one with him in it, or "I Keep Forgetting" is a solo one (Regulate sampled it, Warren G and Nate Dogg), OR his duet with Patti LaBelle "On My Own".
Have a great day!
It's "NO wise man has the power to reason away what a fool believes." The song is about a guy that runs into a woman from his past who he was always in love with, but never gave him a second thought. He saw the opportunity to rekindle something that never was to begin with. The line "As she rises through her apology, anybody else would surely know......" He's regaling her with past memories and she's just like "I'm really sorry, but I gotta go!" What a fool believes.
I turned 16 the year this was released. Saw them in concert the next year. Great show and great band!!! Peace
Maybe the song sounds familiar because that's Michael McDonald's voice you hear singing the lead.
I needed to hear Jai’s laugh today. Thanks, y’all!
We had a saying in the 70's. Which Doobie you be. And, we'd die laughing.
I was 10 yrs old,,, and this is one of my favorite songs of this group. Jai that was funny,, and yes Half, they adopted the name because they were always smoking pot 😂Awesome reaction ❤️👏🙏🇵🇷🇺🇸✌️
We f**king love y’all too! Perfect match.
This is a lyric worth digging into. Great melody but really sad song.
The wise man has the power.
Michael McDonald’s the keyboard player and he’s the lead singer here.
They sound different when the group is singing.
McDonald left the Doobies to have a solo career so ho check him out too.
Ahhhhh yes! The blue eyed soulful voice of Michael McDonald! ❤
What a great calming classic. This song is mellow and smooth. I bet half is right bout how they got there name.
Michael McDonald with James Ingram, "YAH MO BE THERE"🔥You won't be disappointed!
Yes!! The Doobie Brothers
Just classic rock womderful
Omg Jai has the best laugh!! I love it...it makes me laugh too
Nice. Love this tune. The Doobies Rock! Love Michael McDonald. Glad my Black brothers and sisters are liking this music. I’m an old school white boy and I love you guys. Like Captain and Tennille sang. Love will keep us together!
Please do more music by this group. They're literally one of the best to do it 😉
He was "blown away" by the Doobie Brothers...very punny! lol
He was singing:
But a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power
To reason away
What seems
To be
Is always better than nothing
Than nothing at all
My Mom... Thats where I remember it!!! A kid. Late 70's my mom had this playing with friends over and I was like age 8.
That line in the chorus you were wondering about is "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away". That just means don't try to argue with someone too stubborn to listen to reason.
As he rises to her apology/Everybody else would surely know/watching her go/what a fool believes/to seee./The wise man has the power
No wise man has the power, to reason away, what seems to be, is always better than nothing.... The guy believe a woman is in love with him but she wasn't. It's in his head.
Love seeing you two ♥️ This song, amongst many others, is another Michael McDonald HOMERUN. That man could sing the phone book and make it sound like a soulful masterpiece! His time with the Doobie Bros was just as phenomenal as his solo career 👏👏👏♥️
1979 - the year I graduated from High School!! And this was one of my favorite songs.💕
"Jesus is just all right with me" was the first Doobie Brothers song I ever heard. Still love it.
You guys make me laugh and smile! Great band! Was one of my good friends who just passed away last month, favorite band. “Listen to the Music” would be a great one from the same band but with a different lead singer. Would love to watch your reaction to that one! Keep up the good vibes!

The song is about a man who loves a woman who could care less about him.
Couldn’t care less…stop using that the wrong way
First time I've ever landed on y'all's reaction videos. You guys made me so happy, you're enjoyment of music is infectious. Thank you for putting out the positive vibes.
He said … nice voice. Yeah One of the best ever!
Takin To The Streets. Definitely a song to do!!!!
Black Water.....a must listen. Fantastic reaction!
Its so much fun to watch your reactions and the reaction to what a fool believes is beautiful. Hey this song is so awesome watching your reactions. Keep on keeping on.
The Wise man Has the power! You should always have the LYRICS on 80's and before music! "Know what I am saying" LOL
Y'all are great together! I could see you on the dance floor back in the 70s
I was 16 yrs old when this came out & I was IN LOVE with this song, just fabulous!!
You both Rock 👊🏻💪🏼👍🏻🤟!!!
You two are, are the kind of folks we like to hang out with.
Enjoying, Music!
Y'all. "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away. What it seems to be is always better than nothing."
"What a fool believes...he sees..the wise man has the power...to reason away...what seems to be"
You guessed right, they smoked tons of doobies, like all the time. So they called themselves the Doobie Brothers.
To answer your question its "What a fool beliEEEVES, he sees, No wise man has the power."
I love this song growing up as a young kid living in Denver….brings up a lot of memories….
Just watched this - brilliant, thank you. That's how to react to a song with pure happiness & joy, which is infectious and so much fun for us as views to watch. Thanks for sharing and really glad you got the groove of this song.
I love Michael McDonald's voice!! It's so soulful!! He had hits with the Doobie Bros. and also solo...check out his hit song, "I Keep Forgetting"!
That Silver in your beard, represents years of experience, thus, wisdom.
Wear it proud Brother 👊🏻💪🏼👍🏻🤟!!!
And yes, the Doobie Brothers are named after the doobie, a.k.a. as a joint.
Completely original song. My 1st concert in 1981. My mom was mad when I came home and she figured out what Doobie meant.
You two are such cool people. Half, you better marry that girl! Her smile and vibe is on point!
"What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away. What seems to be is always better than nothing, than nothing at all."
The soaring vocal harmonies remind me of another of my favorite bands (groups), Earth Wind and Fire...The long version of "Fantasy" is a good example
"I'm a wise man..." The beard speaks! =;-D
Half: I'm a wise man. Jai: It shows 🤣😄🤣😄😄🤣 You are both the cream in my coffee, the icing on the cake!!! Love you guys too much 😘
Right now I’m back in 1977 cruising Alki Beach near Seattle with the top down on my 5.0 Mustang convertible jamming to the Doobie’s. Thanks!, Great reaction!
The wise man has the power, to reason away , what a fool believes..
Lol! You two seem to have as much fun listening to this as my son & I do riding around listening to them in my car! Yes, we still love listening to The Doobie Brothers today & I don't know how they came up with the name of the band, but you're probably on to something there Half! Lol! Don't cut the gray out of your beard cause it makes a wise man look distinguished & we both know your girl Jai loves it! Love you two & all your reaction videos!
Yup, you got it, doobie = joint, smoke & share a little doobie, groove on some cool jams, and feel the brotherhood
OH my sides hurt, laugh lord You made me laugh. I had to get up off the couch and dance with ya both. What fun this was!😂 Thank you so much for reacting to this! Love ya both, but you know that.
Your smiles and enjoyment are fun to watch!!
His face ,when she said, "it shows!" LMBO
"What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away". It's a saying that means, know matter how wise you are, you'll never have enough power to talk sense into a fool. A fool believes what they want to believe because to them, it's better than nothing at all.
When I was a kid I saw the Doobie Brothers at The Day on the Green concert in California. A better time.
"What a fool believes to see, the wise man has the power to reason away"
The Doobie Brothers have some incredible music and every time I hear it, it brings me back to when I was a teenager. great reaction
What a fool believes he sees
NO wise man has the power to reason away
“What are you a half brother?” - Dee what’s happening! Tv show. Fucking classic
Love The Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald's voice and Reese your the wise man with the power!! 😂😂❤️
Jai laugh is so contagious had me laughing along😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤️❤️👏👏🙌
No wise man has the power to reason away what seems to be it's always better than nothing "BOO YA"😊
Just beautiful…..and love you both!
Jai got you good with that! "It shows" :)
Doobie brothers are a great chill band, and you guys are awesome!
If I rule the world, Nas & Lauryn Hill
That Doobie Brothers What a Fool believes is one of my favorite classic songs out there, great lyrics from that song
Your collective positivity and hilarity is contagious!
The chorus says "the wise man has the power,to reason away, what a fool believes,he,e,seees! What a great freaking song! Check out Ms. Labelle and him together. Check out all his stuff. He's the bomb for com for real
No wise man has the power, to reason away, what a fool believes!!
The wise man has the power to reason away what seems to be……
She had a place in his life.? He never made her think twice.
As she rises to her apology, anybody else would surely know, he’s watching her go ….what a fool believes
yess thats exactly how they got their name!!!!
A fellow musician named Keith “Dyno” Rosen suggested the band call themselves “The Doobie Brothers” because they were constantly partaking in said herbal indulgences
Hey guys!!! Love you!! He is saying The wise man has the power.
That's Michael McDonald singing. He was in the Doobie Brothers and he sang on a bunch of other bands backing vocals like Steely Dan -Peg. Kenny Loggins - If this is it.
