Fresh homemade flour tortillas are one of my favorite things to eat. I’ve been searching for a tortilla recipe. And I’ve finally settled on a recipe from celebrity chef Rick Bayless. Though I have made a couple of changes to the original recipe. Hopefully this video will show you that tortillas are very easy to make. And this recipe in particular is very forgiving.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup Water
1 teaspoon Salt
340 grams / 2 3/4 cups Flour
70 grams / 1/3 cup Olive Oil

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

Nice overhead shot. Just like a real TV chef.
Thanks! I should pay the cameraman and director a bonus for a job well done.

Oh the Joy of Painting...I mean Cooking 😋
He knows his cooking, as a pro 😂😂😂❤❤❤👍👍👍👍
Video was a treat . Call you the Gordon Ramsay of van life .
I learnt something.
Someone was throwing out a 3-foot dowl and I took it and cut it to size for a tortilla roller and sanded. it it's perfect. You can also use a broomstick handle and cut it to size and sand it.
Cool!...another episode of Cooking With Scott. Always look forward to these. Thanks
Hi Scott, Your videos are different than everyone else. I'm going to try the torture recipe. I can tell you enjoy what you do in living your best life. I find myself checking my pantry for ingredients to and love your simple tools. Thankyou.
You have a great voice for teaching. Now I have to make tortillas. Thanks for the recipe.
I am going to try this recipe thankyou for sharing here from Ontario Canada be safe out there 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️😎
Hello😎. I can just imagine what you could do in a chef’s kitchen! I’d make them but I really have a problem with gluten. I’m also eating low carb. But if I could, it would be your version there. Thanks for the time and effort to make the video to show us. I’m glad it works perfectly for you and others here. Enjoy your week!
Im going to try these!...i love tortillas. Ill bet they taste good and the best thing is the freshness without all those preservatives.
Ha! First view. First like. Thanks for this. I'm not a good cook, but I think I can handle this one. I'll give it a go.
Ty, I will try making some. 👍
use whole wheat flour and make rotis. or fold in a little oil, add a little oil on the griddle and make chappatis. so simple.
Thanks for the recipe 👍👍⭐⭐🚐⭐⭐👍👍
✌🏼
was on vacation and spotted Yellowbird in one of the markets. Immediately bought it!!!! 😊
I hope you’re liking the Yellowbird!
FANTASTIC! TORTILLAS WERE LOOKING GOOD SIR
Thanks!
Bayless he is the best - fortunate to eat at Frontera grill in Chicago, every bit as good as advertised man knows his cooking....
Very fortunate!
❤ Scott! Pop N Fresh Doe ! Yummy 😋
Love homemade tortillas. My grandma would make them often for us.
My mom always made tortillas when we were kids even as adults. Another thing our mom would do is after she rolled them out. She cut them into triangle shapes and would add butter after they were done. It was so delicious 😋 I will forever miss her cooking.
@@Cantworship2gods Such sweet memories 💜 ❤️
Thank you for the recipe.
Yum. Now your talking 😌
Oh this is perfect! Thanks Scott!
Love this video!
Very cool. Thank you!
They look delicious! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you it looks easy and tasty😋🌮🫔
Easy peasy flour tortillas. I’m glad you used olive instead of lard. I don’t think I would have made them otherwise. I must find a similar rolling pin.
nice
Yummy 😋
Looks like 👍 easy recipe- doable! Thank you for the video Scott!
I made tthose tortillas today. They turned out yummy. Thanks for the recipe .
Great to hear! You’re welcome
Thanks for the recipe, I'll give it a try soon.
Love the overhead shots. Very well thought out. Great job!
Thanks for the clear recipe and good camera angles. Def trying this
great vid man
Hey Scott! These look really good. I’m going to give it a try😊 Thanks for sharing.
I was just thinking I needed a good tortilla recipe!
Well done and so neat- almost no cleanup
Great job simple recipe thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing this Scott.
I'll give it a shot.
Home-made tortillas is delicious ❤
I usually add baking powder just a pinch of it. But yours looks really good
👋 Scott 😊
Do you have a tour video cause I think I like your layout 😇
This is the closest thing to a tour video that I have: ua-cam.com/video/jDdMwJTWrFg/v-deo.html
Gonna have to make some this weekend!
👍🏼 you should smoke some bacon too!
Another easy to follow tutorial - you explain your reasons for the choices you make and provide options. Using a scale is new to me and a sensible option - less utensils to clean. Looking forward to another one.
Thanks April
Recipe looks easy. Used to watch Rick Bayless when his show aired in my area. Thanks for the recipe.
Chef Bayless has been posting to UA-cam lately.
I think you found a good niche for your channel in "Campervan Cooking"....
No tortillas , No life :)
Always look forward to your content. Thanks for doing the work to put these vids out.
I’ve never made Tortillas so put this on my things to do list.
Yummy! I grew up making them with lard (Crisco) and yup, no baking powder and never a recipe. Just wing it. Gonna try ‘‘em with olive oil.
Ok. I'll make some tortillas.
Those will make excellent quesadillas!
85% of my diet! 😂
Thanks for the tortilla video. I think i could do this. I appreciate you.
You’re welcome. This was the easiest recipe I found.
Oh yeah, my wife always used a tortilla press and yes, she only made white corn tortillas.
Yum! 👏
Really enjoyed this - for the chance to learn how to make tortillas; and to think about what will come with me into my van (I was impressed to think you chose a kitchen scale to include in your minimalist life, what will I think is important that might surprise someone else?). Thanks!
Thank you. The scale helps a little because I have fewer dishes to wash.
@@StaticCamperVan Cool! I didn't think of that angle.
🔥🔥🔥
Thank you soooo much for showing your recipe and how you make tortillas! The carbon steel pan is looking very seasoned! I don’t think that I saw any oil added to the cooking pan - just using any residual and the oil in the dough itself?
I agree with you whole heartedly on the scale and made room in my van for one when traveling - it makes cleanup so much easier without having to wash measuring cups and the recipe is much more repeatable. I have been looking for a recipe for tortillas and will definitely be making these over the next few days.
Thank you so much!!!
The fact that my carbon steel pan is seasoned really well, there’s no need for any added fat for cooking.
But tortillas are traditionally cooked on a dry pan anyway.
@@StaticCamperVan I made these tonight- Your video instruction was perfect! They turned out fantastic! I used avocado oil (because that is what I had). I let them cool and have just stored them in a bag left from the purchased tortillas that we had finished tonight. I put the tortillas in the fridge for storage. Thank you so much!
Awesome! Happy to hear it!
Válgame (goodness) they came out excelente. Sabroso (delicious) Tortillas lo mejor hecho de mano (the best made by hand). Mamí would use milk
I'm finally getting around to watching this.
I really like ur music what is that ? Nice videos ! Love watching !
The song is from an artist named Lauren Duski. It is music that is provided by UA-cam for use on videos.
🦋
Oh yeah Rick Bayless is good. Haven't seen his shows in a while. My ex wife from Mexico City said he was really authentic.
Chef Bayless has been posting on UA-cam again. It’s cool to see some new content from him.
you might want to try whole wheat flour from an indian store and make chappatis. the same as these.
Is there anything you can't cook in your van?:) I've always admired how efficient your kitchen is - including your cookware and outfitting choices.
If there’s a will, there’s a way. But there are some things I don’t tackle
Can you show us the recipe for making ice cubes with your new freezer in the next episode?
If I wanted ice, I wouldn’t be in San Diego!
@@StaticCamperVan How do you make your margaritas with those little umbrellas then?
@@StaticCamperVan 😆
I will have to look for the rolling pin
That small rolling pin is from a Japanese dollar store called Daiso. I’m not sure if they always stock them.
Thank you for sharing this. How long do they last ? And do you keep them out or in fridge?
I keep them in the fridge. They don’t last long because I have no self control.
Funny 😂Will definitely give them a go!
@@StaticCamperVan tried them and very successful!!!!
Awesome!
Thanks for sharing. Just curious, what is the fuel economy on that vehicle?
Depending on hills, between 20 to 24 MPG
Resting the dough is key and not using a lot of flour
🙋♀️☕🎄
Only dirt is cheaper than a tortilla so I can't see making them. I'll bet that Rick Bayless has them delivered by a happy local Mexican who makes thousands of them every morning.
Why are you so miserable?
@@StaticCamperVan Like every person in the USA I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. You either have Covid or you think you will get it if you just talk to a bird. Misery loves company, and I have plenty of other citizens feeling the same, probably for no reason other than that the subject is blared at us incessantly.
what's wrong with crispy? these are just rotis, but a little under cooked. you can roll them a little thicker and they will swell out
I have chosen whole wheat bread, or sour dough bread lately.Tortillas are yummy, but high in fat.
Whole wheat is healthier
@@StaticCamperVan Come
To my ranch brother,lol
I’ve watched this video a few times, but I just caught your comment that you did not like to cover your balls to rest with plastic wrap. Using instead the plate over the bowl. I’m curious why no plastic wrap?
Two reasons. One is that I don’t want to use a throwaway product. And the second is my high sensitivity to chemicals. Sometimes heated plastic will trigger a migraine
How do u store them?
In the fridge
Yahoo... an American referring to metric, priceless. Where's the Guinness Book of Records when you need them. 🙂
The California school system didn’t teach me metric. They also didn’t teach me maths.
couldnt you do that same thing with a can biscuit?
I guess. This recipe is so quick and easy, I don’t know why anyone would.
@@StaticCamperVan well you wouldnt have to mix anything together, just let the temp of the dough rise a little. strange i never thought about it before, it just crossed my mind when i saw you cutting the dough with the knife. i thought, that dough looks like can biscuit dough. i used can biscuits to make chix and dumplings and pot pie dough, i think i might try it for some tortillas, you can put anything in a tortilla. ive even put ramen noodles with boiled potatoes in totillas
@mexicanbanditopatron7994 the two types of dough are very different. Biscuit dough will have extra leavening where my tortilla recipe doesn't have any baking powder at all. But biscuit dough is very versatile.
I have some severe food allergies so I can't eat any of the packaged doughs.
Could you get a electric burner to cook these in that runs off the solar system? Cut costs down even more!
Unfortunately I don’t have enough battery or solar power for electric cooking
👍Thanks for the recipe. Lard is a good fat to use; it's been used by humans for eons. Saturated fat has an undeserved bad name.
I occasionally use my saved bacon fat. Makes for extra soft and tasty tortillas.
