I we'll always have this line resonate with me for the rest of my life. It's 100% accurate like John Dempesy said. Lol it's funny how you look back at life simple words such as these can stay with you forever
44, and I can't even make it through the first verse without breaking into tears. To all you young punks, appreciate the time you have while you have it.
I first heard the lines "Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up" 15 years ago. Never really knew how true it was until it happened. I still hope to eventually get it right.
I was 29 when this came out in 2003 but it was one of my faves then and still is to this day. I'm 46 now and have a 17 year old daughter and I always think about how time flies. Where did it go? How did I become an old man? lol
This song will never stop being relevant, because even as a grown up, you'll never stop growing up, and you can always still make now the best days of your life.
broke as can be and in college with only 300 dollars to our names, I woke up one morning and decided to take my ex and I to a remote place in Nebraska just to see the Milky Way how it was meant to be seen, we drove about 2,000 miles non stop(both ways).. funny story, we didn't make it there before morning.. but what I remember the most is how close we were during that time.. what's even more funny is that she's a total stranger now.. it's crazy what love does to you.. I'm dead inside now, but at least I now know how it feels to be alive.. nothing lasts forever, so follow your heart and never skip the chances to do the things you may never get to do again.. one day your entire life will consist of only memories.. the risks you take are the ones that you'll remember, no matter the outcome
I first heard this song from my favourite teacher. He was someone who believed in me way before I started believing in myself. RIP Mr. Gerritson. I miss him every day
I listened to this song in year end of 2005 , i was 17 back then , and now i'm now 33. All those sweet memories and heartbreaks i can think of still brings me back here.
Heres the thing everybody, the lyrics still mean the same even in our advanced age....I'm 37 for example, and I'm still growing up. I'll look back at 37 when I'm 50 and think how much more fun/easy it was. Live now, nostalgia will tell you these were the best times in good time.
Just saw The Ataris Saturday in my hometown Crescent City, CA and it was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Kris still sounds amazing and i love how his story telling between songs just makes the show so much better. This song will always be a tribute to simpler times and will always remain a classic.
I was in my 20's when this came out. I am now 46 and I still get the same feeling. When will I grow up? I think I missed the bus or didn't get the memo. All the kids I went to school with are teachers, cops, doctors, or work in the courtroom.
I loved the So Long Astoria album, I listened to it on a daily basis when it came out. Those were the best days of my life, my teens... I'm 30 now WTF... time flew!
This entire album is one of my favourite and most listened to in my entire life, I'm 23 now and been listening to it ever since it came out. Can't fault a single song on the album!
This song reminds me of senior year. Class of 2002. Besides having my son, that was the greatest time of my life. I've partied all the way from Cancun to Afghanistan. Nothing beats senior year. Best days of my life.
37 now and he was right. Back then the only thing that mattered was following my my heart don’t know if I got it right or not but I do know now what truly matters. Hold this song very close to my heart. Love you guys. This song just came on PlutoTv
This song will always remind me of when my son graduated from high school, 2002. These guys were one of his favorite bands. They bring lots of emotion on several different levels.
This was THE defining song of my teens.. it brings me such a rush of nostalgia, along with vivid memories of friends I have long since lost contact with... Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up. They were speaking truth there.
I'm from Brazil and I found this band about 2 or 3 years ago, but their music makes me feel like I know them my whole life. I just love to listen to this album, it's a masterpiece
I remember listening to this when I was in the 7th or 8th grade, walking to the pool at the lodge of my neighborhood with my three best friends. Arm in arm, we sang this out loud to one another. I'm 22 years old now, and this song just reminds me of my early teenage years and how incredibly naive and childish I was. I really wish I could make a time-machine and go back because it's true: being grown-up isn't half as fun as growing up.

I was 16 when this song was released and thought at the time "I've got years to go before I turn 30." In that time between then and now I've got blasted out of my mind at festivals and gigs, summer drinking outdoors with my mates, winter drinking in pubs with my mates and all sorts of other hijinks. Now I'm 34 with a 3 year old daughter. Life has slowed down a bit compared with the last 15 years or so and I still miss those days but at least I feel like I did it right. A lot of really good memories to look back on.
My encounter began in a shop's listening corner, where I put on headphones and hit play on track three. The sensation that ran through my entire body was unforgettable. I was compelled to purchase the CD and could hardly contain my excitement, cracking open the packaging on the train and loading it into my CD walkman, disregarding the stares of those around me. I went on to scour the racks for more albums, eventually buying two copies of the same CD due to overuse. この曲に会えてよかった。

I agree. I'm 30 and everytime I listen to some nostalgic 2000's song I think about the past and I feel bad for my choices and I just want to go back in the time and make everything different in my life.

Haha don't fret, growing up is actually pretty great 8] Just find a good partner, dont fry your brain with drugs and alcohol, and get into a job that you are interested in. Everything works out if you stay straight and stick to your passions. This song focuses on the nostalgia of getting old, which can be a bummer to think about if youre in a rough patch as an adult. K im done, wow...
Kacy Chicoine im 30 next year and i still love this band. Growing up sadly gets to everyone....but you can still go to gigs and festivals and still feel young (:
The thing I like about The Ataris, especially So Long Astoria, is that it seems to really sink into peoples lives. Yes of course mine, but every time I scroll down on comments for videos from the ataris, is that people always say "so many memories with this song," or "I love growing up, this song is my life." I love seeing that! So knowing that when I think of this song 20 years from now, I'm going to have all you guys to salute to memories with! Long live The Ataris and long live our memories!
I got this album in a random care package when I was in the war when I was in my teens. It made feel like I was a kid and being back home. Alpha Co 1-125! 2008!
Holy crap I have fond memories of listening to these guys while hanging with friends down in Lake Havasu, AZ while on spring break in '03. We would lay on the blacktop in the neighborhoods while cranking up this song and looking up at the stars at 2 in the morning. Haha now I'm 26, happily married, and have two kids. It's amazing how fast life goes. I think the problem is that all of us are so eager to look for what is beyond the meadows rather than running towards the meadows to just have fun.
I'm 35, I heard this song for the first time in years a few months ago and just stopped what I was doing and had an emotional moment. I had a really weird, unconventional, abusive childhood, and music was one of my only outlets. I used to live in gross motels when I was in high school (mom made really bad decisions), and I have vivid memories of literally hopping the fence to the pool with my cousins at 1am. That southern California teenage era was both the worst and best time of my life. Now I'm married and live in rural Minnesota and haven't seen a motel since I went back to LA to clean out my old storage unit in 2020.
I seriously thank these guys. I could feel how meaningful the time was, when these guy were my age, through their So Long Astoria album so much that I felt like the only senior in High School who didn't want the school year to end. I learned back in the summer of 2003 how lucky I was to realize that "right now was all that mattered" and to this day, it continues to be the best time of my life. I grew up a huge hip hop head, but 2003 was just such a special time, that I had "The Ataris" written on my backpack senior year.
Damn this is a sad song..reminds me of my friends and my mom...so many memories in this song! Im from the Philippines and we also did almost everything he said now on our mid 30's...I lost my mom...my friends have there own family here and abroad...playing this song brings back all those good times!
Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up These are the best days of our lives The only thing that matters is just following your heart And eventually you'll finally get it right....
Enquanto muitos sofrem, eu AMO essa música porque me traz energia oposta! De nostalgia como a música mesmo diz... As memórias do passado que eu tenho TODAS são incríveis e as mais especiais. A vida de adulto não é a coisa mais linda, mas ela também é especial... Mas sim, ahhh nada como a infância/adolescência! 🫶🌹😍
This song (and album) always brings me back to the summer of 2003, dating "the one that got away" and all the crazy shit my friends and I got away with. That summer really was the best I'd ever had. "Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing old, these are the best days of our lives."
The summer after I turned 17 was the best summer I've ever had. This song is exactly what happened that summer. My best friend bought me this CD because at the end of that summer this song was released. He had 1 condition... The first song I had to listen to was "My reply" because I was on the edge of unaliving myself. He saved me that night. I lost him in 2016 to an overdose. Thank you Mike, I miss you so damn much.
We had corny songs on our high school class-song ballot (almost 7 years ago!) and I loved this song so I got my group of friends to make fliers and spread the word to petition this song on the ballot. It worked and the song of course won. We were all tired of that Green Day graduation song! This song was perfect and still brings back so many memories when I hear it.
About to turn 41...😢 miss those days. I show my 5 kids these bangers now and they can feel the difference betwen this and the new garbage thats being put out.
"Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up" is 100% accurate.
@John Dempesy I really needed to hear that tonight and this song and that line is BANG-ON!

For real man, life goes so quickly
It happens on a gradient.
Gradually, for example 365 days in a year, a year can go pretty fast and then it’s became numerous years in what feels like just a couple years.
This song is absolutely timeless and rings true for every person in every generation. Time is fleeting. Spread love.
I was 17 when this song came out. I'm now 37. Twenty years on, when that chorus kicks in it STILL hits me the exact same way.

Here in this diary I write you visions of my summer
It was the best I ever had
There were choruses and sing alongs
And that unspoken feeling of knowing
That right now is all that matters
All the nights we stayed up talking
Listening to 80's songs
And quoting lines from all those movies that we love
It still brings a smile to my face
I guess when it comes down to it
Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up
These are the best days of our lives
The only thing that matters is just following your heart
And eventually you'll finally get it right
Breaking into hotel swimming pools
And wreaking havoc on our world
Hanging out at truck stops
Just to pass the time
The blacktop singing me to sleep
Lighting fireworks in parking lots
Illuminate the blackest nights
Cherry cokes under this moonlit summer sky
2015 Riverside, it's time to say goodbye
Get on the bus, it's time to go
Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up
These are the best days of our lives
The only thing that matters is just following your heart
And eventually you'll finally get it right
(Get it right)
Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up
These are the best days of our lives
The only thing that matters is just following your heart
And eventually you'll finally get it right
this was our song graduating from high school back in 2005 and still listening and playing it on my guitar on this day.
Song makes me sad 8[ I miss ages 16-21. Them some wild times right there, so enjoy em they only come round once!
+Kacy Chicoine Lol I turn 20 in a week, this song fucking destroyed me. The thought of growing up blows. Still a hard concept to grasp...
Growing up sadly gets to everyone....but you can still go to gigs and festivals and still feel young (:
just saw them last night, and they are still rockin hard
The thing I like about The Ataris, especially So Long Astoria, is that it seems to really sink into peoples lives. Yes of course mine, but every time I scroll down on comments for videos from the ataris, is that people always say "so many memories with this song," or "I love growing up, this song is my life." I love seeing that! So knowing that when I think of this song 20 years from now, I'm going to have all you guys to salute to memories with! Long live The Ataris and long live our memories!
Can’t believe I stumble upon this gem. Now I’m going to play it 20 times a day. Lol
31 años de edad. Remember. sigue viva esta excelente rola, Go! The Ataris. Desde México.
How's life for you now at 34/35?
was 12 years old when i first this song. am now 27 and it never gets old. thank you ataris!
Being 35 now…this song hits in the feels for sure…good times I’m glad I grew up with the music that I did
The whole album make you wanna cry
I'm 35, I heard this song for the first time in years a few months ago and just stopped what I was doing and had an emotional moment. I had a really weird, unconventional, abusive childhood, and music was one of my only outlets. I used to live in gross motels when I was in high school (mom made really bad decisions), and I have vivid memories of literally hopping the fence to the pool with my cousins at 1am. That southern California teenage era was both the worst and best time of my life. Now I'm married and live in rural Minnesota and haven't seen a motel since I went back to LA to clean out my old storage unit in 2020.
saw them live last night for the first time. still just as good and brought back so many memories
Im from the Philippines and we also did almost everything he said now on our mid 30's...I lost my mom...my friends have there own family here and abroad...playing this song brings back all those good times!
same from ph
Im 35 this song makes me remember good ol high school days. No songs from today can compare songs around 2000s Sad in a good way.
The only thing that matters is following your heart...and eventually you'll get it right! How I love this song on so many levels.
Mid 90’s- Mid 00’s punk/rock, is the definition of nostalgia.
JonesiBoy Beastmode Agreed!
Love this group ❤ since ever 😊
This song "still brings a smile to my face" 🎶✨
used to listen this when I was a kid and now im not just listening to the song I also feel it
Minha música preferida. 🇧🇷
Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up
These are the best days of our lives
The only thing that matters is just following your heart
And eventually you'll finally get it right....
the whole album is a materpiece, everytime i listen to it, i get so melancolic and happy at the same time :')
I watch this in 2007 when i see perfect score in Television, can’t believe a boy from sukabumi, Indonesia know this band
Enquanto muitos sofrem, eu AMO essa música porque me traz energia oposta! De nostalgia como a música mesmo diz... As memórias do passado que eu tenho TODAS são incríveis e as mais especiais. A vida de adulto não é a coisa mais linda, mas ela também é especial... Mas sim, ahhh nada como a infância/adolescência! 🫶🌹😍
Nossaaaa.... arrebentou ❤❤❤❤❤
This song (and album) always brings me back to the summer of 2003, dating "the one that got away" and all the crazy shit my friends and I got away with. That summer really was the best I'd ever had.
"Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing old, these are the best days of our lives."
This is probably the best coming of age song I've heard it makes me think of the hard spots in life ive been going through and helps alot!!!!
ever gotten blackout drunk and woke up in a tijuana jail when you started out the night in kansas
I saw this band play an acoustic set when I was like 15. Was surreal & layed back, I won't ever forget it.
2022 and im still loving this song, that mean's an excelent moment in my life
The Ataris Rocking Out In Converse Sneakers
Who's listening to this in Summer of 2021? Shout out to my older sister Chelsea for showing me these songs!! Time flies.
"Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up" Preach!

Underrated song 😢 this is a master piece
The Perfect Score brought me here!! Love the vibe behind this song!!
