How To Adjust Shim Type Mechanical Lifters On VW/VOLVO/ and Other Euro Engines.

  • For those old timers like myself, This was how we made our money early on. Every 30K or as needed, nearly all Volkswagen water cooled engines, as well as Volvos, in both Gas and Diesel, and Mercedes used this old school way of adjusting the valve lash. A shim kit, a set of feeler gauges, and a valve depressor tool were needed, and if you did these often enough, you could make a buck or two by beating the book time.
    Enjoy this mostly forgotten skill from a time when engines were built to last.

    Volvo 745 b230Ft Turbo uses Shims. One of the most reliable engines ever produced.

    Good and informative video, Erik. Used to do valve adjustments on old motorcycles back in the day. Seems like I always came up short on one shim or the other to complete the job. Lol. Hope your recovery is progressing as planned. 😑🦗

    I had a question come up in my mechanics exam about shims and how to adjust them, The only stuff I could find online about adjusting shims was for bikes!aha I asked one of the guys at work and he told me to look up MK1 Golfs and your video popped up!
    Just wanted to say you explained that really clearly and I appreciate you taking the time to upload this cause it really helped me understand it, not sure I’ll ever have to do it but at least I’ll know what I’m doing if I do aha!

    Wow!!! Those tools will be a great thing to add to the box… way more fun than disassemble top part of the engine and set timing .

    Thanks for this. Wondering if you can help me: I’ve ordered that pry tool that you use in the video but I can’t quite visualize what it does. Can you explain how it works? I’m trying to understand whether this tool will work on a volvo penta AQ125B engine on a boat I’m working on. It’s got the same shim set up but the spacing between the lobs looks different than what you are working on. Would that matter?

      It might, but these tools are from a Volvo so I'd say you'll be fine. The tool grabs just the outer lip of the cam bucket and misses the shim so that you can pop it out.

    Once it warms up later this spring I plan on checking/adjusting the valve clearance on my Volvo B230 engine. I have a variety of shims - pretty much one of each available size - and the digital electronic micrometer. I have to pick up the offset feeler gauge and pick. I plan on removing the camshaft in order to replace the hushers/silencers. So, there should be no need for a depressing tool. My biggest fear is not having the proper shim - as happened to you - and having to order it and wait a couple of weeks with the car laid up. Sigh! :(

      Not having the parts when you need it is a huge bummer. Good luck with your project

      @@FarpointFarms Well, I done did it! I ran into some problems with the shim sizes. So, I put it all back together and have ordered 2 additional shims and the IPD tool to keep from having to take it all apart again. All I have to do this time is remove the valve cover and pop out the old shims and replace them with the new ones. (The hushers and timing belt have already been replaced.)

    Very informative. Is it dangerous to push on the bucket to remove the shim at TDC since the piston is at its highest position in the cylinder and the valve might hit the piston top when you depress the bucket ??? Thank you! Does it depend if it is an interference type engine or not?

    Ha Ha, I have a whole bunch of shims left over from my mark 1 Rabbits and Sciroccos. Been looking for one to restore as they are fun to drive.

    I need to do the valve adjustment on a similar engine.
    I would love to know the name of the tools please

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  2 дні тому

      The most important is the feeler gauges. Next is the valve spring depressor tool and lastly is the valve shim removal tool.
