  • The world of online business is exploding with opportunities. There seems to be something for everyone. In this conversation, Katie and I chat about our favorite stream of revenue in online business: blogging. The blogging landscape has changed drastically over the years, and it is ripe with opportunity for those willing to learn the strategy and devote the time. If you love chatting business strategy as much as I do, join us for this peek behind the curtain in the lives of two career bloggers!
    In this episode, we cover:
Advice from two seasoned bloggers to those who are just getting started
Are successful blogs built by luck or hard work?
Putting in the work early in your business before hiring help
Viewing blogging through a business lens rather than a personal lens
Finding what motivates you to push through hard seasons of business
Why it is important to keep producing even if you don’t do it perfectly
Discerning which online platform is best for you: blogging, UA-cam, social media, etc.
    ABOUT KATIE
Katie lives in Virginia with her husband, three daughters, a chocolate lab, and over thirty chickens. She loves creating simple tutorials for sourdough, bread, and soap. Her recipes, articles, and UA-cam videos reach millions of people per year.

"I'm working as hard as I can and I'm not growing. Well, I'll just keep working. If I stop, then I DEFINITELY won't grow. But if I keep going, maybe I will. And I did.".
For some reason that just hit me. Thank you.

I’m so glad you spoke about being sort of anonymous. I had a UA-cam channel a few years back and didn’t like the window being open to my life. I want to do this but I don’t want to show my face so much nor my life. A lot of people want access to you and that freaks me out. I’m a private person - I think you gals have given me the answer thank you!

There are a few homemaking ladies I like to watch that just film their work, never their faces or their families faces. Maybe the kids rollerblading but not the kids themselves. I tend to rather enjoy it bc I’m watching her skill with cutting her veggies or how she arranges the flowers, not paying attention to her so much. Does that make sense, I’m just rambling 🤷‍♀️

I had TikTok for a few months to track my baby's swimming progress. But when the videos started hitting a few thousand views, I got scared and went down the rabbit hole of what could happen if people knew where I was going. Lol. I suddenly felt the need to protect my baby's privacy. I saved the videos for me, then deleted all social media. I feel so much lighter anyway. Communication became burdensome through all the messaging from every social media app.

I love the entrepreneurship episodes. I probably don’t fit the normal demographic of this channel (CPA, city-living, mom of 2). But I have a bookkeeping business that allows me to stay home and I plan to homeschool when my babies are older. I love learning how moms “do it all.” I glean so much from each guest!

I was born a natural healer. It started off with children and gradually adults approached me for consultation and guidance. Today my clients are either doctors, counselors or have Reiki healing practices. After doing this for over 12 years I now feel comfortable with starting a UA-cam channel. What you offer is so inspiring because we all have an innate connection with one another. Unfortunately, people feel so isolated today! So my point is that you are contributing to the health of our society! Watching you two just feels good! 🙏🙏🙏

Lisa, this was such a wonderful interview! Thank you so much for sharing and for the great questions! I’m so happy you and Katie talked about being anonymous and private - I feel like when I started, I wanted to build a personal brand and be the face of the company - but this time around - as I’m ready to get back into entrepreneurship, I would love to hide behind a logo and keep my identity private for the most part. This is something that I’m still playing around with in my head and you’re right - it sounds so intriguing. Thanks again for such a wonderful convo! You inspire me! ❤️🙏🏼

Love this conversation! I started my blog very niche and in my home country language (Dutch, I live in Belgium). About homeschooling autism. I do yield out with more broad topics that still ‘fit’ the niche like crafts or kid activities sometimes. I have no knowledge, apart from your free masterclass Lisa and I just went full on in. 2 blogposts every single week and I have not missed one for 6 months. I JUST had my first post take off. The hard work is what pays off definitely! I had a friend start the same month as I did, but she has not been consistent at all and she has no views on her blog even though she had a bigger network to start with

I’m very curious. My husband was our only income as I homeschooled etc and he then broke his wrists from doing what he does at work (but wasn’t during work hours so he is not getting work comp) to help someone, and we now have no income. It’s been very frustrating, kind of scary, and I told my husband I need to go get a job. He said absolutely not. He doesn’t want to change how we have our home set up. And he is also correct that Any job outside of our home will just pay for daycare. ( I’m also my husbands caretaker as he cannot use his arms. It’s taking a long time with healing and disability has not kicked in. I’ll be looking into this more.
(Had a yard sale, been selling random things too..running out of ideas!)

My question is what happens when dad is no longer needed to babysit? So many UA-cam women talk about bringing their husbands home to help and they are helpful... However, a man is made to work. Since your husband doesn't play a huge part in the business although "its both your business" I guess, what happens to the relationship, how do you work together without the other feeling like they are the boss or vice versa? If you care to share one day, this is important for moms doing what you do who "want to bring their husbands home." But ... To what? Divorce? I'm thinking of another tuber who "brought her hubby home" in 2012 and...kids got big and my guess, dad was on the side lines and bored. They are no longer together. How do you work this out so marriage is stronger not weaker?

    • @Simplefarmhouselife

That means a blog would be profitable only for a U.S. or European market, correct? I’m from a small Latin American country, so I’m thinking it would make more sense to target a U.S. market instead of my home country. Thoughts…?

I don’t know either women but I’m very interested in this topic. Next time, interviewer, please let the guest answer the question before giving your experience. It was tough to get the guests perspective when the interviewer kept interjecting with, “yea for me…”.. the guest couldn’t get a word in at times

Completely agree. I don’t think the interviewer realizes she’s doing it but there were a few times I could see frustration or surprise on the guests face that she was consistently being interrupted and not being listened too . Otherwise, don’t have guests and just share your own thoughts.

I have shared many times that we have a very very slow internet connection which we have tried every remedy we know of...it results in a delay in the interviews ...often resulting in talking over the guest. We do the best we can.

Why go back and fix or update old content? I don’t understand. Why not focus on what’s next, what’s new?

My Gramms used to tell me that she thought I'd be so good at blogging... it's something I've always entertained in the back of my mind, especially since she passed away. She was a HUGE influence in my life and was always my biggest cheerleader. I'm that person who thinks it all needs to be perfect before I start 🫣. And I tend to chicken out after being stuck deciding on a logo or something so trivial. With the economy the way it is right now, my family is struggling... is it possible to start a blog with basically $0 to invest?! I'd love to make it happen for my family, to take some pressure off my husband and to allow me to continue being a stay-at-home, homeschooling momma.

You have to pay for a website host

Hosting is around $10/mo? I guess I mean substantial investment like hundreds to thousands to be successful.

You can surely start without a huge starting capital. Only for hosting and domain name. Go for it!

Loved this episode! I had a dream way back in 2012 to start a lifestyle blog. So good to hear it’s still relevant and that I can continue to dream about that option. YouTubing always felt way too personal to consider. Thanks for sharing!
