So i've never done competitive IRL motorsports and last time I did any gokarting at all was at a birthday party or something like 15+ years ago, but I took up sim racing and rally games in 2020, and seeing this Andretti quote and shifting my mentality to that helped my lines SOOOOO much.
I changed my thinking from a mentality of rather than simply "slowing down" with braking to using the brake to distribute the car's weight and convert forward momentum to angular momentum (especially on any type of loose surface). Even on the simulator getting a feel for how you're using the brakes to distribute the weight and convert momentum to your advantage is a big step to improving your lines, lap times, and tactics.
DISCLAIMER: I am not good at sim racing by any means, i still fuck up and crash out on a regular basis, BUT i have made an improvement over the years (altho my current iRatings don't show that due to a recent period of just trying WAY Too hard when i needed a break LOLOLOL)

Brakes allow for forward weight transfer. In a kart it's important to lift the inside rear wheel to free the engine as it does not have a diff. The outside wheel allows faster wheel speed thus engine speed. More engine speed means the engine will be closer to it's optimal engine speed and you will be faster out of the corner. Now sliding keeps both rear tires on the ground and also means your speed is = to the average speed of both tires. It could work for corners that you are opening up, but at that point you shouldn't be slowing down anyway.

Good Video ! I have counseled people in the past that are fairly new to karting to run laps without braking to try to learn smoothness and then add braking sparingly, because as a novice it is easy to use too much brake.

I would say this aspect of "Not Braking" is more or less depenent on the karts and tracks. I have been to indoor places where you quite literally cannot make some corners without using the brakes, and other tracks where there are 0 braking points on the entire hotlap. K1 for example you can pretty much take the entire hotlap without touching the brakes as the motor slows the kart down enough to make most corners.

Lifting can compromise engine power whereas if you brake hard in short bursts you can decrease the speed just as effectively while maintaining more engine power, and as mentioned in the video turning under braking can be very effective in karts

Funny story (I'll keep it short)
Years ago I was in a err... juvenile correction center (CORRECTION not detention) and for recreational things they would take us as a group on "field trips"...we went to a cart racing circuit.
These were older style carts not the ultra fast ones they got now.
There were more of us than there were carts. So we had to wait in line for a turn.
I kept noticing they had this one cart that they kept to the side the only one.
I asked what was wrong with it. One of the guys there told me that the brakes were completely gone.
I said can I ride it anyway? He was like sure, you just won't have breaks, no one else wants to ride it. Not only was I the fastest guy on the course... I never had to wait in line to ride... I just kept on riding as everyone else kept on getting on and off and waiting in line for their next turn...lol

My timing was slower (25.234) when only lifting off. This is because when you release your foot the kart coasts for a period of time. A quick tap of the brakes slows the kart down quicker and you’re able to get better exit speed this way.

As said above, I've done a lot of indoor karting and definitely going sideways heats up tyres MUCH more. The sideways scraping, combined with the need to throw bigger angles to scrub speed, combined with the throttle overuse makes the rear tyres "go off" within ~3mins... Fronts ~5mins.
Will take more than a lap of "rolling" for them to recover

I let off before the corner that’s all the braking I need and a bit of scrubbing. 😁
Most tracks don’t need literally any braking but the new electric karts scrubbing doesn’t matter as much because they have instant torque.
The clutches in these crappy low powered karts need higher rpm to engage the clutch so that’s what kills your speed.

Aren't the corners you are describing exactly like the ones at 0:32?
To get through a section of corners as fast as possible it's important to keep the minimum speed up and get a good final exit. With a high entry speed you'll lose speed on that exit, resulting in a lower minimum speed than just having a little lower entry speed and getting a good exit.
And being a heavy guy, your biggest hit is to your acceleration, getting a good exit keeps this to a minimum.

Lift a little earlier and coast into the corner if it's a relatively quick one. If its a slow corner, brake gentler but earlier as this doesn't unsettle the kart as much and therefore gives maximum grip at turn in, allowing you to carry more speed before you get the sliding

Cheaper, common rental karts tend to rapidly lose speed, so merely lifting is often enough, especially on wider, sweeping tracks. More casual, simpler tracks, if you will.

I've never found use of brakes helpful in a kart but I've also never driven a kart that goes as fast as what you're driving here. I'm betting there is a line between lower performance karts and higher performance karts where braking begins to make a difference.

No arguing with the points made here, since there is no denying the benefits of braking. But on the flipside, there are indoor carts out there with underpowered engines that are incredibly slow to pick up (the non electric ones with too little torque at low RPM), in which case braking less or no braking means you can keep the RPM in the optimum range for much faster pick up out of corners. That can more than compensate for the downside of not braking mentioned here.
Again, it depends on the carts. With most indoor cart tracks moving or having moved to electric, this argument has indeed been settled though.

What about lift/engine brake vs brake? I had never gone karting and went from high 27's to 25.0X in 3 races (roughly 30 or so laps) only using lift braking.
I was using an electric kart, and when braking while accelerating the kart would dramatically slow down, to the point where in few cases it brought me to a near full stop, because I didn't notice I was applying the brake. I'm 31, drive manual, and have plenty of experience driving on and off road. Yet I'll be honest, I had a hard time not just ignoring the brake due to accidently touching it and losing momentum. By the way, I used a different kart each race and by my third I had decided to keep my foot off the brake completely, and achieved my best times.
Karting was fun but for roughly 50 bucks for 2 races lasting maybe 5-10 minutes including waiting, go twice a month and you just spent 1,200 on karting in a year. Count me in for the one free birthday race plus maybe 2-3 paid races same day.
I would much rather save the cash an buy another cheap dirt bike, another gun, a car/bike mod, or put it towards any other hobby that actually comes home or goes outdoors with me, at my discretion.
Sorry for the rant, stay safe and stay strong out there brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ loves you.

I raced go karts 1 time, 4 laps of braking and I was only able to improve by 1 second between lap 1 and 4, I went again without breaking and improved that fastest time by 4 seconds, idk I was absolutely ruthless and a madman with the no breaking turn, I don’t want to be rude and say it was your driving / mindset when you didn’t have the breaks but I got sideways a few times and my foot never left the floor lol it could also just be track layout but I also had 2 almost 90s like this track, I wouldn’t recommend it though what I did was pretty dangerous, I’ll have to add that I made every turn exactly how it needed to be made which is why it was dangerous, one mistake and I was getting walled 😂

How to using brakes is the driving basis

  • @TheeGlocktopus
    @TheeGlocktopus 7 місяців тому

Traction is a coefficient of three factors: Braking, accelerating, and handling. This coefficient can only max out at 100% ie; only up to 100% of the tires grip can be used at any given moment. Only doing one of the three factors at any given time gets you the most grip for that application. Introducing multiple factors at the same time, such as braking and turning, the grip is split. This is referred to as "balance." This being said and agreed upon, I think the major contributing factor to your results here is your driving stile off-brake. You compare the two videos, and you actually have more off throttle time than brake time in the braking run, and more off-throttle time than the "no-brake" lap. Your time increases in the corners and fast exits and rotation are due to the off-throttle time. If you recreate the "no-brake" run but focus on making up for the no-brakes by just lifting and rotating (instead of just gassing all the way to the brake point), the results will be much less dramatic and much closer. Especially in a gokart. Things get weird with LSDs and modern transmissions. (You can slow the car down with engine resistance off-throttle and not sacrifice traction coefficent).

You are getting slower times without using the brakes because you are still driving the cars the same way you do with brakes.
Try entering the turns wider and turning sharper once you hit the apex while also powering through, full throttle as soon as you turn sharply. The reason you are slowing down while skidding g is because you lost momentum by turning in before the apex due to your position so close to the smaller portion of the curve.
