I hate how a lot of black women aren't considered popstars because of skin color and are instead categorized as hip-hop/r&b. And like listen those are my favorite genres but it is borderline racist to ALWAYS categorize black women there and not have more diversity like be in the pop space. Like why are white girls only allowed to be in the pop genre? Or white passing. There is absolutely no diversity. I wanna see more representation of all races and I especially wanna see black female artists get the flowers that they deserve. It really shouldn't be this complicated like it is straight up modern day segregation.
Another thing, we NEED a dark skin black pop princesses. Colorism in the music industry is unreal.

When black people accept this we can thrive again musically. The early 2000s we were r&b and thriving while justin timberlake and brittany spears were pop. Why do people get offended by being called r&b? R&b is a huge umbrella of music that includes a rick james just like it includes a james brown just like it includes a brandy just like it includes the dream and chris brown. Tricky stewart actually just said the same thing in a recent interview. Yall take offense to the title r&b for what? 😂 its r&b
@@Des_Armoni Ik R&B is one of the best genres but it is limited in the sense where it is associated with urban culture while pop reaches everyone. That's the difference. I'm so proud of r&b and hip-hop and I genuinely believe those two are the best genres. But it *does* feel like modern day segregation like oh the artist is black so imma put them in this category even though it doesn't make sense for it to be there. You know what I mean
I think it's racist to put hip-hop and R&B into the same categories in the first place. And I remember people calling Ice-T's Body Count song (Cop Killer) a rap song when in actuality it was Hardcore/HeavyMetal. The industry is just racist 😒
On the topic of Sabrina Carpenter the industry plant thing is thrown out too much. I hate when people find it hard to imagine that someone just went under their radar. It’s okay to not have a pulse on every sector of music and that you were caught unaware of someone talented and hardworking. I remember people getting mad at Billie Eilish for having all this success but she just worked hard outside of the eyes of the mainstream.
Yep i’ve been seeing it as a talking point quite too often . People complain about the lack of quality, talent , and quickness in the industry but when we actually have people who have been proven to work for a decade plus and hustled their way to the top…people put out false narratives 🙄

taylor definitely compromised her artistic integrity & growth to become a money machine and nothings wrong with admitting that😭. her older works are farrrr better than her recent & i'm not even a diehard fan just a casual listener. TTPD being #1 is great for her but it starts getting weird when 1. your own fans are complaining abt how you did it & 2. when the average person doesn't know any of the songs. that really makes one think like "how you number one and nobody besides your hardcore fans ever heard the songs"
As a fan there is only a few songs i return to on ttpd(none of them the singles). I think it is because she courts a younger audience she becomes the only thing they listen to. I listen to a little bit of everything. Because of the kendrick and drake beef I've been listening to more of kendrick and rappers like him because what i heard in the beef i liked. These fan will never do that.
Whenever you bring that up on Twitter you just get jumped by her stans. It’s so annoying trying to have a discussion about Taylor. Like when she won song of the summer for that song with Post Malone everybody was like I’ve never heard this anywhere, and the only one who defended was her stans who then was like it’s a fan award y’all should’ve voted

I used to be a diehard fan back on 2010-2011. After that, I just lost interest and became a casual listener and I did like her singles released after. I tried listening to newer stuff, and I did like some of the songs a little bit, but they’re not the same as when she first came out in 2006 up until 2011. I guess I just prefer the upbeat, pop sound from back then.
Ice Spice being the girl that blew up from being a meme and Sexy Red as the trashy girl never fails to frustrate me - if anyone deserved it, it's Cupcakke. You might find her sexual songs too much but her punchlines and lyricism are insane.
On the topic of Azealia Banks - it's a shame that she managed to waste all of the momentum she had with 212 with her mouth, like she was meant to be featured on Gaga's album and very much on the up as a known commodity. And Broke with Expensive Taste is an outstanding album so the talent is there.

I 100% agree about Cupcakke. Her most recent album surprised me so much. I put it on at a whim and there is nothing but hits and stellar flow on that project! She truly has what it takes, it’s a shame she’s been boxed into this meme status by the internet at large.

I don't know if this is unpopular or not, but I believe that inclusivity towards black artists has gotten worse than better. Back in the 50s to the early 90s, a lot of the biggest artists were black. Whitney Houston, Aretha, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, James Brown, Mariah Carey, and soooo many more. And while we do have a lot of successful black artists now, it seems as though if they are not a rapper, they just don't get what they deserve (other than Beyonce, but she did start in the 90s...). It just seems that we are sidelining them way more than we used to.
I don’t think ‘we’ are, I think the industry is. Black folks had too much influence-rightfully. This is why you see more “plants” and mediocre pop girls who get big off of black lyrics and choreography while Black talent is shelved.
I can definitely see this take, and I do think that the industry isn’t funding black artist in the same way that they are other artists. Because we do have some great talent that deserves to be much bigger. I actually Kind of agree with this.
I agree with this too one of the main reasons why r&b and hip hop are not big nowadays is because the labels are purposely not funding those genres like that because of the fear of another black artists era of dominance why do you think why pop and country music are the most popular genres and those genres are nearly white artists is because they are playing the race game in a smart hidden way

I really don’t get all this Sabrina hate! I watched the VMAs with some friends and they were just annoyed at the sight of her! One said she’s an industry plant. 😐 I’m like y’all she’s been at this for a while. By the end they admitted they enjoyed the Espresso performance, despite not being fans of the song, still they weren’t quite sold on her talent.
Side note: how about a video ranking the VMA performances? Katy Perry surprisingly wowed me!
I don’t get the hate either with Sabrina! I think when artist blow up and get popular, there’s a natural tendency to begin to hate on them. Especially when the general public catches on. It’s OK to not like her music, but she’s definitely worked hard to get to where she is.🙌🏽 also, that’s definitely because Katy’s performance was very good!

@@leegend-tr7ew her video for "in my bed" is the best example. weird infantilization/sexualization duality, references to hypnosis and dissociative states (levitating in the bed, alternate personas), butterfly symbolism (monarch programming), bisected black and white outfit representing duality. all of the imagery seems to be alluding to trauma-based mind control and her "handlers" being the older white men in suits.
To me it feel like there’s not of enough individuality in female rap. Everyone is so entangled with each other and I’m just tired of this whole team cardi team Nicki BS that sadly affected other female rappers.
I agree! It’s too much of a team a versus team B. It makes it less about the music and individuality & more about divisiveness. To me, it keeps it at the stagnant point.
Especially in female rap, I find that it becomes listening to the same song just chopped up, rearranged and put to a new beat.
Like they reuse so many of the same lines, and you can never tell if it's referential, or if they're just uncreative.
And of course, that's gonna happen with any genre, but I feel like female rap is just super homogeneous, and the experimental fun stuff like Rico Nasty, Doechii, Ashnikko, Princess Nokia, Baby Tate, etc. Are fighting for their lives.
Like its criminal that some of the worst female rappers out there are outstreaming my faves.

Consumers are constantly complaining about the state of female rap and how underrated those artists like doechii or Rico nasty are, but refuse to change anything about it. I wish people did more streaming, and less complaining. Maybe then we’ll get variety.
this is a sad outlook, because in REALITY - glorilla, cardi, megan, doechii, flo milli, latto, cleotrapa, ice spice, saweetie, yung miami, jt, bia, and sexxyred are all VERY much their own individuals! their work sounds nothing alike, their aesthetics are all their own.
this issue arises when a certain fanbase compares them ALL to one woman. that fanbase does not want any other woman in rap to exist, much less thrive. it’s beyond creepy.

Madonna has great songs and influence but ultimately I agree. Janet really ushered in a new kind of performer and a lot of what we see today is fruit off her tree.
After listening to some of Brandy's discography, im absolutely shocked that she wasn't considered a main pop girl at the time given how many mainstream and popular songs were obviously inspired by her and her sound.
It really makes you wonder why, it’s unfortunate that she doesn’t get that credit

I think the argument for no longer working with Finneas loses a lot of its weight when you listen to her latest album. That album is in another sonic universe from her first 2 releases, and is probably their best work to date. It's probably too soon to say, but HMHAS is probably their magnum opus and the ridiculous amount of awards that the first album got, feels like is more warranted with this album.
I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion but, i think people only throw the "industry plant" term around because they either don't know what it actually means or don't like the artist that's getting popular
Foresure! It is way overused and it’s used to be dismissive of people more often than not
you were far kinder than I would have been to about Taylor and her business practices. and I am fan of her music. I think it's despicable. the more money she bleeds from her die-hard fan base and she exploits them to monopolize petty chart success, the more over-the-top media saturation she indulges, the more goodwill she loses with the general listener. I am never looking or waiting for a female artist's downfall because I think that generally people are all too eager historically to tear women down once they reach the top. but I do sometimes feel like her's is inevitable. she just seems like a completely plastic sellout to me now. not to take anything away from her talent or the grace with which she carries herself in the public eye. because I respect those things immensely.

I strongly think she has potential to experiment with her voice and sound, but she chooses not to and that’s where I struggle. She obviously has so much talent, but I just think if she put more effort into her songs themselves rather than her image she could truly excell as an artist.
@@Sismsodmdmdpersonally i think her career, musically wise is reaching plateau. because she’s done country to pop transition, and pop to alternative transition. on a business and her branding perspective, she’d never touch hip hop or instrumental. she might have a chance in r&b but i dont think she could pull off r&b if her voice isn’t as strong as her songwriting, with her current state of vocals (not great just ok) it’ll be hard to transition into r&b.
apart from her fans’ positive reactions to her current type of music, the reason she keeps doing this is because she knew her time’s near. she could go back to country again but with so many artists reinventing country sounds she’s gonna have a great intense competitions.
what she’s doing right now - “blocking” artists from #1 with those variants, is really her tactic to break previously held records by famous artists like MJ, Whitney and The Beatles. why? so she (& her fans) could have a valid reason to call her a “legend” using TTPD. i hope that makes sense
She doesn't need to fear ever falling off as most of her songs since she came onto the scene are classic and you as a listener can often find yourself ▶️ING it on 🔁 for days ....so she shouldn't worry her impact is felt plus she will spoil people's views on her and later her career overtime will tank because of what she is " doing" to remain number 1 and not giving others coming up a shot
This one ain't about the artists, it's about the fans/consumers. For whatever reason, there is this idea that artists are like, employees of the fans and because "fans pay for the music" they should get a say in how the music is made, how the artist acts, or what they do next. (not like in a critique way, in a "make this happen or I stop being a fan" way). I fully disagree with that. You don't pay artist to continue making music that you want, you pay them for music/art that already exists. You're not hiring a contractor. The idea that we pay them and then they make what we want is wild to me and I think it's the reason so many ppl feel so entitled over their fans art/life.

Your take on Brandy is very on the nose. Never Say Never is definitely a pop album, with R&B elements to it. While I’m happy that Brandy is getting her flowers in recent years (especially after she did the Verzuz with Monica), I still don’t think she’s appreciated enough. I mean, will we ever see another dark skin Black girl/woman reign as high as her in this lifetime??
Yeah, I think we really need to wait this conversation up more because Brandy is really such a blueprint for not only R&B artists, but pop artist as well. I think if we continue having these conversations, people will continue to prop up her legacy and give her the proper credit!

The Clout Chasing era is the reason why the music industry is where its at. The general public made these people, who started off and blew up as memes and Instagram comedy people, were hyped up to think that they can make mediocre and downright, snobbish music to put out there. And, guess what, it goes viral. One person did it, then another, then another, and the cycled continued until that era died down. But as the result of that, these culture vulture people have made an example to others like "hey, this song isn't nowhere near the standard that the industry is looking for but hey I'm getting rich off of it so come take your slice". Now we have artists these days blowing up from mediocre talent and literally bring nothing to the table because they got a hit off a viral moment and now the GP are now getting tired of them. Y'all blew them up! So deal with it now.
Exactly. People need to realize a person needs to have a good passion for the craft. Ppl get paid for being influencers nowadays and it needs to stay that way. These ppl that are funny on social media should be entertainers but not in the music industry. Like acting and doing comedy is a thing. They could make money from that.

Personally I feel like ur not really a rapper in my book if you don’t write 😬. Like let’s be very very honest you can teach anybody to rap, how to ride a beat but writing and making that ish sound good and make it make sense is the hard part. That’s why rap music is dry and boring now because people can’t write anymore, they can’t produce either. Rappers in the 90s were also producers or started their career as producers, personally that’s why 90s rap will always be the golden standard 🤌

Def agree about hip hop needing a reset. I'm not deep into hip hop/rap by any means but it feels like it's in a similar spot to where rock was before grunge came up. It's super commercialized and trends and aesthetics are coming before artistry more often. Hopefully now that the commercial space is so saturated, and people are starting to get sick of it, we'll see more artists coming up with more unique and authentic sounds
Yep it’s become so convoluted and commercialized to the point where people have forgot the fundamentals, the roots , the purpose. Most of the rap music mainstream pushes is pretty watered down😢

You can’t forget about All For You which is another classic. The song “All For You” was her comeback song and went #1 on the charts. “Doesn’t Really Matter” is another pop masterpiece that I think people forget about that also is a classic from the Nutty Professor soundtrack.

I think the issue with Taylor and her variants is also about how exploitative it feels of her fans. She has built this cult following and I used to be in the fandom so I know how competitive it can get with who is the biggest fan, so it just feels wrong. I know that people are free to make the choice not to buy any variants but I would feel a sense of guilt taking advantage of people's par asocial relationships in this way. I'm very interested in how many individual people have brought the album too considering it's a thing for her fans to buy 13 copies just of the standard edition so her numbers (while still very impressive ofc) may not necessarily be representative of her real impact. I think that's where people's frustration with her popularity comes from too; it feels more like something her most obsessive fans are trying to fabricate to be representative of the whole population than being genuine.
Ice Spice and Sexxxy Red are def not good rappers, but they could have had so much better streams and longevity if they knew how to work the industry. For an example, someone like Cardi B, who soooo many people talked about how she wasn't that good, but she worked her rap beef and comparisons to Nicki so she was heavily talked about while starting out, but also she did the one thing that especially Ice Spice is not doing: Making connections with others in the industry. Ice had a few collabs sure, but she has managed to break all of those ties, and have those people (Nicki, Central C, Taylor, exc.) stop working with her, or outright dislike her, unlike Cardi, who did collabs and made friends with people like Megan, Dua, Glorilla, Migos, Maroon 5, and so many more. This allowed her to stay in the game and build a strong following, and gave her time to improv her craft without crashing and burning.

I absolutely and wholeheartedly disagree with the people who say that Billie needs to branch out from making music with Finneas. They are a creative partnership and I don't think Billie Eilish would be who she is today without her brother's music production talent. Finneas and Billie are simply geniuses when they work together. They bolster each other creatively and I just don't think it would feel right if Billie ever released an album without her brother as a creative partner.

One of the biggest issues in my opinion, regarding what's going on with Hip-hop, is everybody is rapping over trap beats. It's just not exciting, you can anticipate how every new rap release is going to sound. We might need to bring back using drum breaks.
Not just that, but I feel like sample clearance issues really crippled modern hip-hop on the production side. Trap beats is now a one size fits all production style. And it's EVERYWHERE now, even metalcore bands are using it. Which would be cool if it wasn't already over saturated in the industry. I miss deep cut sampling tbh. That's what hip hop needs, it goes together like wire rims on a low rider.

Jam is amazing album opener, and I think the title track is a great closer. The only real issue I have with Dangerous is the mixing on the song Can’t Let Her Get Away where’s he rapping. I think his vocals were drowned out by the beat on that part.

I disagree with your stance on Chappell Roan, but I respect it. I understand she is not for everyone. She is to me, however, the most talented and interesting female pop artist in a while. Her vocals, lyrics and stage presence hit for me.
I also believe Aaliyah and Beyoncé would have been able to coexist. Beyoncé would have become the artist and performer we know today. As for Aaliyah (I’m happy you said it, too), her career seemed to have been going in many directions. She could have stuck with music, but I believe she would have continued branching out in acting (I know she was supposed to star in Honey before she sadly passed away) and would have branched out into other business ventures, AND could have been a strong advocate in the me too movement.
Rap and hip-hop need to be better. As a fan of that genre, the best songs in recent memory have all stemmed from beefs. While those can be fun to watch play out (unless it gets violent), I wish they would stop their bullshit and uplift each other. Some of the anger and disgust is valid, and I don’t understand why some fans defend some of their tomfoolery. As for the female rappers, if they would stop hating one another they could rule the world of rap and hip-hop. As for all the rappers, stop letting just anyone in.

Couple of thoughts: 1) Brandy...was R&B. People underestimate how much radio impacted how artists were marketed in the 90s. She was played on R&B radio. If you went to a record store in the 90s, Brandy's albums would've been in the R&B section. That was an intentional decision by the label to put her there. The race convo notwithstanding, a lot of black artists were marketed as R&B. 2) Nicki being asked to give credit to Kim is not like female rappers after her being asked to kiss her ring. Nicki quite intentionally co-opted Kim's aesthetic on her come-up. Kim was her blueprint, to a large extent. Female rappers like Cardi B, Doja Cat, and Meg being asked to bow down to Nicki is really the result of her stans wanting everyone to pedestalize her the way they do. A young female rapper wearing wigs, dressing sexy, and rapping about sex things does not mean they are copying Nicki.

As a singer I can say that people confuse appealing singing with healthy singing.
Kelly sings with a more healthy technique than Adele. Adele’s voice sounds good but she’s had to get multiple vocal chord surgeries in her career whereas Kelly’s voice has gotten richer over time. A lot of that has to do with technique.
Someone’s voice or tone can sound cool but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy or sustainable. I can imagine it’s similar in dance if someone is using unideal technique for tricks that might look cool but can cause injury if done wrong too much over time. Great singing has to include healthy singing otherwise you’re going to shorten your career unnecessarily.
if we're talking a Versuz battle based on songs though, I would vote for Adele because I prefer her music. Kelly's pop-rock stuff isn't always for me. Both of them are getting washed by Jazmine Sullivan though.

White soul singers thoughts: I’m a vocalist classically trained and I teach voice. Adele is not solid technique wise keep in mind she has had I believe 2 vocal surgeries due to her bad technique. I’ve heard seasoned vocal therapist and teachers say she tries so hard to sound like a 60s black woman from the south that and that’s not her construction. I prefer Kelly her singing is closer to her talking style and tend to sound healthier and as far we know has not led to any lasting injuries

1. The backlash will be insane. It seems greedy and out-of-touch when we're in the middle of the worst recession in human history and the current global economy is in the shitter. The Watcher fiasco was a great case study on this.
2. You will not make as much money as you are planning (Usually it's a loss). Point, blank, period.
3. People will just pirate it. So fast it will make your head spin.
4. Early reviewers are gonna either be stans or critics on UA-cam, which is not good for making money. The stans are going to buy the product anyways and the critics are going to be even more harsh since it costs money now when it previously didn't. People deciding whether or not to purchase will look to those UA-camrs and go, "fuck this, no thanks," poisoning the well so that no one drinks it.
The incentive has to be something completely unique that a purchaser wouldn't otherwise get waiting for the album to drop on streaming. So albums and CDs before streaming? Sure, that's fine. Just know your stuff will be pirated. But making it DIGITALLY inaccessible so that you have to buy it before it comes out on streaming... I'd love to see that dumpster fire.

MJ's intention was to make an album filled with tracks for everyone, that's why Thriller feels all over the place, it does have some of his best songs ever (WBSS, Human Nature,TLIML, nope, not including BJ because next to the other three it's DEVOURED) as a moonwalker, I don't really go back to Thriller from start to finish album experience, I listen to some of the songs, but never fully exactly because it doesn't have an exact vibe to it, the variety indeed is what made it successful, which is great. Honestly, for me, Off The Wall and BAD are his best albums, solid from top to bottom, each with a certain vibe/story
I do want to make an honorable mention to HIStory because that album was INSANE and so personal, the genre range, his vocal performance, how politically heavy and socially sensitive it is (About Us, Tabloid Junkie, Money, Earth Song, Little Susie, Come Together cover knowing all the story behind it) tracks addressing the 1993 allegations (This Time Around aka THE BIGGIE COLLAB LIKE?????, 2 Bad with Shaquille O'Neal, D.S with Slash, Stranger In Moscow) AND finally having a collab with Janet, he was doing it all and he was MAD big time! I always recommend people to listen that first, because it's probably the only time we got a true glimpse of MJ as a human and not as an icon.

How off-the-wall is often left out of the conversations of his best album because when you really listen back, it was a really great body of work. Maybe some people aren’t hip? I also thoroughly enjoyed the bad album as well. I would say that’s my third favorite. Also, because of this comment, I’m going to revisit history because I remember some of the tracks off the top of my head, but a lot of them are blurry to me, and it sounds like I should give it another listen!

Though, it has been an ongoing topic recently for critics to decide between OTW and Thriller as MJ's best album, so it's only time the public catches up.
Please do revisit HIStory, such a gem of an album constantly overlooked, when it was very diverse in music genres, he went off writing, singing and even rapping, it was him at his most experimental/adventurous, I do hope it goes under a renaissance, because how come people are always talking and wondering about his thoughts, when he made an entire album exploring exactly that? like... he made a whole tea party with this album, also the diss tracks go absolutely crazy!

I think that rap is actually one of the most (if not THE MOST) timeless genres but we tend to overlook that because of some of the most hyped artists are very monothematic and uninspired (only talking about money, cars, strippers etc.). The reason behind my take is that rap (if written well)= social and political commentary, and that will never ever lose its relevance. We actually need it more and more with each day.
Same happens to me about Chappell Roan. I respect her artistry and i like some songs but sonically i dont feel pulled towards her.
The US needs to get it together and start producing and supporting talented stars again cause kpop can’t fill the gap forever.
My opinions:
1. Personally, I hear more of an influence from foxy brown when it comes to Nicki.
2. people idolise MJ way too much for my liking. You can appreciate how much of an icon he was without putting him on a pedestal as if he is God.
3. Piggy backing on the opinion about Beyonce and Aaliyah. Aaliyah didn’t have a strong support system behind her compared to Beyonce which would hinder her success in the long run.
As for Billie Eilish, It would be really cool for her to collaborate more with different producers from time to time, but why her music and sound are doing so well is because of their relationship. They understand eachother and can communicate comfortably, finneas isnt pushing his sound on her and she even helped produce a lot of her lastest album herself. If you listen to Finneas's music, it sounds very different from Billy's so I think it's something she has decided and inspired. Its also not like her music is stangnant, she has explored a lot of different sounds and genres, and she keeps evolving and both are getting better and better both musically and vocally through the years.
Honestly if Ice Spice wants any chance at success again. She’s to take a long hiatus, 2-4 years and actually perfecting her craft and finding her own style. Otherwise she’s just gonna end up with a reputation of “Yeah, that happened.”
I don’t even know who Tyla is but you know what I know? I know about Water. I think it was a great move on her teams part because it was a smash hit. You never know what you’ll be up against in the future and you lose 100 percent of the shots you don’t take. I think about Tamar Braxton at times like this. She has an undeniable talent and with an album and singles strong as Love and War, she walked home empty handed.
