  • If the treatment of HIV has significantly advanced over the past three decade, why hasn't our perception of people with the disease advanced as well? After being diagnosed with HIV, Arik Hartmann has chosen to live transparently in an effort to increase education and dismiss misconceptions about the disease.
Raised in Arizona, Arik Hartmann is a 24 year old Senior in Resource Biology and Biodiversity at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. He currently assists in wetland ecology research, working as a student contractor at the USGS National Wetlands and Aquatic Research Center in Lafayette. Arik has been HIV positive for two years and has presented on HIV/AIDS awareness and history to student organizations. The goal of his HIV transparency is to reduce the stigma that surrounds those infected and dispel misconceptions about the virus. After graduating next spring, Arik plans to pursue a Master's Degree in Conservation Biology.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The sigma with HIV is rather one sided, as most people assume that if you have HIV you are being promiscuous or unsafe, whilst that can be a cause of HIV some people were born with HIV, and just like anyone with a disease they didn't ask to have it yet the stigma still follows them. as humans we forget that just because you don't have a disease doesn't give you a right to act like people who do are beneath you for you are human too. what happened to them can easily happen to you. have empathy they didn't ask for this. I applaud his openness its about time we start fighting the stigma.

🖐🖐🖐 it's sad that there is still so much fear when it comes to this disease. Thank you for sharing your story 💗 I think education has fallen through cracks and even though it's no longer a death sentence so many people still contract it. We need to talk to our kids and teach them!

Wonderful talk! it is my prayer that through education about HIV that proper funding could be placed for helping everyone afford the medication so that no one will ever have to suffer because of a very treatable disease.

    • @whoeverwonders9892

wow, that is very expensive!! Will insurance cover for it? And will insurance raise your premium to a very high level the second year?

Very good questions. Thank you for asking. I don't know where you live, but where I am my county department of health provided me with a case manager who helped me through all the paperwork to receive medical assistance. As a result, I only pay $1 for my medication. That's $1 every three months for me.
So, yes, insurance combined with medical assistance will lower the cost to you.
