Jim Demarest joined ViiV Healthcare at its inception in November 2009 as the Director of Microbiology Strategy. ViiV Healthcare was created by GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer as a global specialist HIV company dedicated to delivering advances in treatment and care for people living with HIV. Jim provides global oversight for the virology and immunology associated with pre- clinical and clinical phase compounds as well as marketed products. Prior to joining ViiV Healthcare, he spent more than 10 years at GlaxoSmithKline R&D (legacy GlaxoWellcome) where he was involved in the discovery and development of novel antivirals, immune-based therapies, and vaccines for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Jim earned his PhD from the George Washington University while conducting research at the National Institutes of Health/NIAID. He did a post-doctoral research fellowship at Duke University, where he is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor. Jim Demarest discusses innovations focused on advancing novel treatments that require less frequent dosing and attempt to achieve HIV cure.
I have been on ATRIPLA for 10 years. I was undetectable after 6 weeks of use. Sadly in the USA the drug cost $2500 per month (my insurance paid in full). I left the USA in 2014, and moved to Nicaragua. Here the same medication is completely free, as is all HIV care, including lab work, hospitalization if needed. Thankfully I have never missed a dose. Now been celibate for 7 years. Undetectable, and living a stress free life in the country of my heritage.
I am lucky enough to live in the UK, and all HIV care has always been free here, no matter of nationality or immigration status, 13 years diagnosed, 11 years on meds, and been undetectable for over 10 years :) and even got a new wife after my diagnosis, so life is good :)
