one of the reasons why i respect Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Rihanna is that they know how to not let a flop era get to them. Mariah flopped with Glitter and came back stronger with Emancipation of Mimi, Beyoncé’s 4 era was a flop for her standard because the album was leaked and people were saying she was over then she released the self-titled album and Rihanna’s Rated R saw a huge decline in sales compared to her previous album Good Girl Gone Bad but Rihanna didn’t let that stop her she released one of the biggest pop albums of the 2010’s, LOUD.
True not mention Beyoncé, Mariah and Rihanna embraced their “flop eras” in retrospect especially when each of those albums were ahead of their time and developed cult classic statuses
Mariah especially! I was booping to emancipation as a child and I still love that album. Back then I just thought it was a good album but growing up and learning the context makes it even more impressive
I think Janet Jackson's Damita Jo album is one of the saddest examples of a "flop era". That album was actually projected to be a smash hit, but the superbowl incident and the unfair blacklisting that followed prematurely stalled her career
For real, All Nite deserved to be just a sucessful like Rhythm Nation, TTWLG or All For You, luckily she's had sort of a redemption in recent years and now she's reconigzed as the icon AND legend she is. 🔥
@@wolfdog2112 I think that she says that is sad what happened with DJ in terms of commercial perfornance, bc the album was supposed to outsell All For You and it didn't bc the nipplegate.
I know!! Damita Jo has such fun and solid songs, to this day I’m shocked that I Want You never made it huge - I always wonder what would have happened had the Super Bowl incident Never happened and where that album would have stood in pop culture.
I agree as well. I was shocked that the company forced her to not do any promo and hold back upbeat stuff. I was like wtf? All Night and that Rock song was so good lol! Im glad that her and Mary are still here!
@@baritone9799 It doesn't make sense but Artpop slaps. I didn't really love it at the time but all these years later I actually enjoy like 80% of it. Also, ArtRave was the best tour of hers that I've gone to, and I've been to all of them except the very first tour she ever did.
I loved Nicki’s Queen album. It definitely doesn’t compare to her mixtape days or something like roman reloaded but i think the drama around 2018 definitely overshadowed the overall release of the album.
@@naomi.cannibal hi not sure if you’ve done a video on it but can you maybe do a video on the decline of pop music in comparison to the 2010’s and why you think that is. Idk it’s that possible.
Queen was so underrated. Man I think it one of my favorite or runner up to pink Friday. I believe the hate train definitely worked but nicki who I love helped the hate train by responding to everything and the industry giving cardi a major push at this time
The Queen album did well but it was overshadowed by the media trying to push the beef with cardi. They tried to move Nicki out by trying to make it seem like cardi was the new face of female rappers. But that failed because Nicki is still on top
Mariah didn’t just have a flop era, her ex husband sabotaged her, stole her tracks’s layout and features, even payed radios/stations to ignore her music, AND it was released on 9/11. Then she STILL came back harder with a new record, THE song of the decade, and launched herself into the “new” world of music. Not many artists can shift to evolving styles but she did it successfully and with multiple people out to get her.
@marianospears3626 well charmbraslet did well but not enough to return her to her 90s glory day Plus Mottola was still around He tried to ruin mariah's career But fortunately mariah came back stronger than ever with emancipation of mimi
I think we can all agree that while Gaga, Katy, Nicki have had "flop" eras, these three women have absolutely left their mark on pop music and pop culture as a whole. I am contently jamming out to all three of those ladies' songs - past, present and (hopefully) future. I think all three of them are role models in their own way.
I've been rediscovering Christina lately and Bionic feels like an album that was pretty ahead of its time content-wise. Christina's sexual liberation feminist albums would have hit so much harder in this day and age, where we're much more outspoken about these themes. I remember there was so much criticism of that album and even of its imagery at the time, memes about Christina surviving 2011... I've discovered that she's an artist with so much more depth than I remembered - she's been heavily involved in production and the creative directions of her albums in a time where other artists were heavily controlled by their labels. It's made me see her in a whole different light.
I definitely expected to see Bionic in this video! Bionic was the first time I ever recall people calling someone's album a flop and really going in on an artist for lack of numbers/sales/etc. It was even the first time I saw the term "flop era". That album was definitely ahead of its time and there was a lot going behind the scenes that contributed to the downfall of the album.
Bionic is probably the most iconic flop of the last 20 years. I love that album with all of my heart and will difend it for the rest of my days. NOT so much i can say for Lotus😭
*Katy Perry doing Play in Vegas is the best thing she could've done for her career, it has completely rebranded her to what we loved her for, when Witness happened it completely drowned her, and I'm so happy Harley's In Hawaii got popular on Tik Tok because it has over 300M+ streams now!* 👏🏻
@@guillermo4687 It's a good tradeoff imo. Now she gets to spend more time with Orlando and Daisy without feeling like she has to sacrifice her personal and private life. Being able to be stationary in Las Vegas while also getting to experience Daisy's milestones for herself means more to her than anything as she's spoken of.
I enjoyed her last. and her christian cd. I bought it on vinyl. I think the market was alittle too crowded. But like wendy said-shes smart to stay on idol. Love these chats. I thought Witness was ok.
As always Naomi NAILED this topic!! ARTPOP ushered Gaga into that category where she was cemented as a pop legend and icon who didn’t necessarily have to chart anymore to prove herself. She forever gets to say that she didn’t chase trends or did what she should have just to sell the album, but it’s reflective of her unique artistry to this day and always will be. The album was a masterpiece, but not as digestible to the general pop music-consuming public of the time as Born This Way was, which definitely contributed to its comparative performance.
Interesting observation. I think she definitely made that shift, but it was brought about by the Oscars performance/tribute, Joanne, and A Star Is Born. Having stanned through it, ARTPOP was a period of real questioning in some in the fandom and DEFINITELY within the gen pop of Gaga’s longevity. People had doubts following ARTPOP and she was very overexposed after the Born This away era ended and ARTPOP began. Remember, although overall ARTPOP didn’t get great promo, when she first was debuting it, it actually got a lot of promo and coverage. People were generally acting just tired of Gaga when AP didn’t sound like they wanted it to. I think when the gen pop saw she wouldn’t always make them think too hard and could serve regular basic pop as well as the classics (Cheek to Cheek album, The Cure, Joanne singles) only then could they see she was going to stick around regardless of a “low” selling album like AP.
the thing is with ARTPOP it is ironic how in it's first week it is very promoted which led to it being number one. songs like dope (a promo single) debuted at 8. Applause was a top ten hit and Do What U Want debuted in 13-16 and people understood what ARTPOP was and praised it but after Troy Carter leaving her and R Kelly (and more) people turned on Gaga. ARTPOP wasn't ahead of it's time, it was stolen from success by sabatoge.
@@leavecowsalone people weren't sick. it is just so much controversy and drama happened and with the album's messy rollouts and messiness in general people were against Gaga. ARTPOP was really an album that Gaga went to a pop princess to a POP QUEEN, a performer and a true artists. While Joanne and A Star Is Born just improved in Gaga's talent, praise and critics.
Dua Lipa is one. I’m not even sure if she released an album but her singles are fireeee. Coi Leray is a “rapper” who I think this also applies too. Latto as well. Megan Thee Stallion. The rap girlies are killing it because I can’t think of any strictly pop artist besides Dua Lipa. Billie has great album sales so she doesn’t apply. Same for Taylor Swift and Arianna Grande. Idk who else
@@naomi.cannibal demi lovato is a good example. katy perry (even tho teenage dream is considered a pop masterpiece retrospectively, it got mixed reviews when it came out and i personally don’t think its as cohesive or consistent as others think).
Also important to note on Mariah Carey is that she successfully transitioned into the new century with The Emancipation of Mimi, E=mc², and Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel during mid to late 2000s. Yes Glitter and Charmbracelet were bumpy roads, but Mariah was out there competing with the 2000s pop and r&b girlies while her 90s diva peers kind of slowed down and just settled on their tours or residencies. On top of all that, she also wrote 18 #1 hits on the billboard along w her entire discography minus the covers. TALENT with hard work, I tell yall.

Being an harmonizer back in 2017 was scary to say the least. The album wasn't doing that well, social media was all up on them, just too much at once. That album wasn't even supposed to come out. In the album thanks, Lauren even thanked some label personnel for helping them release it even when they were told not to give any support to it. On their last interview, Dinah said they had better songs they wanted to put on it but weren't allowed to. That album is my favorite from them but they were clearly too tired of everything to go on with the group and, as much as I miss them, I'm glad they did it. Epic sucks, and I will live on that.
Yeah I was so stressed for them… I did like 5th Harmony a lot but I think they suffered from never really having a “group identity” but w all the drama they were probably barely functioning as a group towards the end… it’s sad what happened w them bc there was potential
@@naomi.cannibal I do agree that compared to other girl groups, they didnt stand out as a group and they did not seem like a real group but just 5 soloist who had to be together.
Self Titled was also my favorite album of theirs because it seemed as tho they finally came together as a group, I think they could have made it as a foursome but the lack of support from the label is what ended them
The album actually sold more than Miley Cyrus’s younger now album that came out around the same time. Definitely wouldn’t consider it a flop but underperformed.
The biggest problem with fifth harmony wasn't the girls themselves, it was everyone that worked behind the scenes with them - from their label and managment to their publicists to their stylist. The girls had little to no creative control over their career choices (except for camila who was given certain privileges that the other girls weren't.) Their label was really just setting them up to fail in hopes that camila would be the breakout star and secure the bag for them. The saddest part about the whole fifth harmony situation is that they had the potential to be even bigger than they were if they were given freedom with their creative choices. They are all genuinely so talented and their label really screwed things up because they let of what could have been the biggest girl group. They even got along well but their work conditions made things awkward between them (especially when one member was clearly being favoured over the rest.) After camila left, fifth harmony got little to NO promotion at all for their album and were refused to include certains songs that they wanted to include in the album. Their last album has some bangers but because they had already been painted as bitxhes who bullied their member out of their group, most people were rooting for their downfall and hoping for them to flop - which they did. _Fifth Harmony,_ the album deserved so much more. The girls deserved so much more (not camila tho idc about her racist ass) [EDIT] Just want to add that: this girl group was not only full of creative, intelligent, funny and talented women, they were also one of the most diverse girl groups of all time and that was also a big reason for all the fame and love they received. None of the girls lacked when it came to vocals and dancing (maybe Ally wasn't as good but she practiced and is such a great dancer now) Sad that they (and we) were robbed from what could have been.
I really feel like if ARTPOP was made in 2021/2022 I feel like it would’ve done way better, especially if she did change a few things and add like 1 or 2 good features, ARTPOP would’ve definitely be promoted better in my opinion.
@@bonniebellaxoxo8853 imo it is, that’s why I said if ArtPop was in today times, Chromatica to me is like way more dramatic and over futuristic rather than ArtPop, almost like if ArtPop and Born this way had a child that likes house techno.

With Nicki, I feel like her personal life choices have accelerated this era. People can't seem to get passed that, so even if she makes great music, it'll be overshadowed anyway. DaBaby overestimated his star power. Thought he could act like a clown with no consequences. If I couldn't fill up a McDonald's I'd lose my mind too tbh.
Even with her personal life people are still listening, she just got the biggest hit of her career and I don’t even understand considering she has released much better songs.
exactly the way nicki act is the reason why nicki is being compared to latto and gorilla who are half of her age and of course people will bring her age up is not that she stand up for herself but why make it worse then ever if nicki beef with remy or lil kim it would not be a big of a deal since their age is closer and it would be women vs women but nicki act like latto and cardi are her age but not hate toward nicki
@BlackVenus see you articulated what I was trying to say. You can’t say she is a flop when she is mopping the floor with the other rap girls. You can only say Twitter might not like her
I strongly believe that with better promotion, Never Really Over could have been one of the songs of the summer. This song had been her highest peeking song in over 2 years yet her label just randomly stopped promoting it and it fell off. It’s easily one of her best in recent years
I think because it wasn’t attached to an album at the time & Katy was still healing from the whole witness disaster, that both her and the label didn’t have enough confidence to back it all the way. It really is a shame cause it’s such a great song 😕
When I think of this, "Love + Fear" from MARINA comes to mind. Too many songs sounded similar to each other and were repetitive. Then "Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land" came out and blew the previous albums out of the water, a huge 180 and showing how she took criticism to heart, and ADIAML is my favorite album of hers now.
Billboard did Nicki dirty they counted Travis bundle sales but didn’t count Nicki’s, that’s why he was able to go #1 for a second week. Right after she called them out they changed the merch rules.
But Astroworkd still was out streaming, out performing and out selling Her album so her whining and crying and attacking his daughter was all just weird because she was losing regardless and she had merch bundles and multiple deluxe editions and even added 6ix9ine song to the album as a bonus track and still flopped so 😮💨 that era was embarrassing for her. She always cry when she don’t get her way.. because if she was successful or out charting others then she’d be bragging and boasting and putting it in their face. And the way she was acting did nothing but show her to be the entitled whiny cry baby she is.. she’s highly beautiful and successful and has a loyal fan base yet she always some where composing and whining . Then ppl defend her and it’s annoying. She’s not humble or down to earth and all. She’s not American or even from this country or this culture yet swear everything is owed to her or belong to her. My biggest problem with ARTPOP (as a stan who watched all the events when they came out) was something about it just didn't feel like Gaga - Like she was trying to be something she wasn't. Yes it felt incohesive and messy, but with gaga's obsession with art theory it gave the impression she was DESPERATE for approval from the high brow art world - which seemed contradictory coming from someone whose entire brand was to love yourself and not change who you are for anyone even if that means being an outsider. I don't know how to describe it, but something about ARTPOP just feels shallow and inauthentic. Chromtica, while not my favorite gaga album, feels much more true to who she really is, both lyrically and visually.
As someone who is a Gaga stan, I am not completely disagreeing but I am wondering if Artpop didn't feel like Gaga or if we got used to a type of Gaga her fans had been accustomed to because she's always been into "high brow" art and I feel her work has always blended trash pop and high brow
She was pulling a lot of gimics around that time to that was hot bullshit. " we made a flying dress" and it was a weird hovering plastic contraption. And also this app called artpop or something she had like a count down to like a sneak peak/exclusive of new music or something and it just never happened. And omg she crap she was going on with. It all was really try hard.
@@shanareilly6649 OMG I REMEMBER THE ARTPOP APP - that didn't even cross my mind. And the app had this figure called "aura". And then once the album was released the app wasn't good for shit - it was all this build up that went nowhere.
This is strange because I feel ARTPOP is the essence of Lady Gaga. It is the deepest connection she has ever had to her music because of how raw and emotional the record is. Passion oozes out of every track. It’s also her most free & fearless album imo. I say free not to describe her life at the time but the way she unleashed everything onto the canvas in an unforgiving and reckless way. It’s funny because the production is such that it gives the impression of being artificial, but it’s like she rides the music to deliver her message. She has never been so connected to her art.
@@NeonTwilighti agree with this! out of any pop artist out there I would imagine lady Gaga is the most steeped in the high art world, the art world of academia, she actually went to college for this. Artpop is still one of my favorite pieces of work from Gaga, and definitely my favorite album cover BY FAR from her. I'll never forgive society for ignoring its existence lol. G.U.Y is still an unskippable song for me 😩
I didn't like the album when it first came out but I have absolutely fallen in love with it all these years later and I realized that it just was ahead of its time it's an excellent album
i personally think fifth harmony’s self-titled album is their BEST piece of work, but i think it’s performance being low is due to multiple reasons. like u said camila’s departure was messy with her fans + little mix stans taking her side. it didn’t help that camila was talking abt her depression while in the group which led to ppl thinking she was kicked out & the girls were bullies. also the label didn’t care abt any of the girls besides her, in a note i believe lauren wrote that the label didn’t help them at all with the album & it was only a some of their team working with them who helped. i love down, but it wasn’t a good reintroduction to the public. the acoustic version is a lot better & shows off their vocals, but i think they should’ve found another song.
RANT ASIDE: i do rlly love this album & it definitely shows off who fifth harmony was as a group. they were sassy and flirty, but had a vulnerable side. writing 5/10 songs definitely helped give off this vibe. my fave songs are he like that, make you mad, & lonely night. when i tell you i used to SWEAT doing the he like that choreo in my room as a 16 year old, i mean IT!
Girl I love when you said it’s unrealistic to expect every album from an artist to get fantastic numbers/outsell their last! These are human beings not robots and more goes into it than just if the music is good or not, it’s also about how many ppl are realistically out buying albums at that time in the economy and politics/drama that may be surrounding the artist.. which has nothing to do w if the art is good or not but people can’t separate the art from the artist which I understand. But yes, not every album that doesn’t sell a billion copies is a flop.. that’s just silly to expect every one to be a smash hit.
The fact that nicki made a song about the Industry trying to paint her as a bad guy (chun-li) and then that's exactly what happened. These so called flop albums are just people not wanting to actually listen to what the artists are trying to say in their albums.
She made the song because that’s what was going on at that time. The hate train had started before Queen. That was her fighter song to the industry that you cannot stop her. ❤
Chun-li was a HIT and it wasn't a matter of what Nicki was saying in her music that woman went up against these gaints in the industry who was tryna stop her bag and take her down. Her Queen album did well HOWEVER BILLBOARD NEVER counted her merch sales like they did for travis and that is why Nicki was angry cuz he went #1 and she didn't
i remember seeing a comment about reputation and it being a flop to a lot of people, so i looked it up and it sold 1.2 MILLION first week. i wouldn't call that a flop whatsoever.. and i have that album on repeat sometimes if im being honest
Gaga was always ahead if her time, she has always been a performance artist on top of a singer and a musical performer. Also, she was 25-27 when she worked on it and released it, with that perspective looking back, her work was and is great
I don't think ARTPOP is any lighter than Born This Way. Hell, i think it's one of her darkest bodies of work. It literally has Dope and Swine and there is this strong sarcasm running through the album. Probably my favourite album by Gaga.
As a fem bisexual the song G.U.Y. was so important for me realizing that my body was not inherently submissive and that I didn't necessarily need to peg my hypothetical boyfriend to be dominant. I grew up online in the era when radical feminism was bleeding into the mainstream discussion and the biphobic rhetoric of "having sex with men is inherently exploitative and wanting to is antithetical to queerness in general" which hurt me and my self perception in ways I still can't quite put into words. And here was this song by an openly bisexual woman about having loving, kinky sex with her partner... It means a lot to me.

The GP didn’t and still don’t hate her. Nicki Minaj does weird stuff and many saw a pattern from her and pointed it out. It was one of those seatless venues so it kinda made sense, but I never really considered why they had so many spare tickets. This was also outside of the US, so I’m not sure if they were super popular in this country. The concert was good, but they were definitely phoning it in.
when speaking about "flop" eras people forget to mention that the time we live in was different. i belive that around 2016 the internet become bigger as ever to artists. outside america: nicki, rihanna and beyoncé has larger fan bases in south america that the labels barely look to, we actually pay for concert tickets, many people book flights to watch a concert because is less expensive travel than wait for them come to any country i don't think any of those people experienced a total flop but they conflicting personal lives affecting the work & poor decisions and bad management
I feel like Camilla pulling that move on the group messed up their trajectory and the launchpad they all should’ve equally had and it was also very obvious at a certain point that they were pushing her as the “Beyoncé”. It was also quite obvious she was running around the industry making connections with people and simultaneously bad mouthing the girls positioning herself as the victim. How ironic considering the racism situation with her, her fans and Normani chile. What I never understood was how was she able to quit when the girls had two albums left. I think in honesty the hate train seemed so real, but Nicki did peddle it with her antics like a negative cycle, even then the over criticism of her not being in her prime or her declining, then literally 3 years later debuting at No. 1 twice for the first time goes to show that the hate train was actually real.
Bryson Tiller is another example of this, after the massive success of Trapsoul, his sophomore album couldn’t live to that success and many consider it a flop, but I have been seeing in recent years that the album wasn’t as bad as they made it seem.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention Beyonce's 4 era. It was at point in her career where people were mostly expecting more pop and RnB/Hip hop elements to her songs so when she changed it up and did a more meaningful album that used rock, old time jazz, afrobeats, and soul - people did not adapt to the change so nicely. Even though Love On Top is one of the hardest songs for her perform live and spawned her pregnancy moment live @ the VMAs. In recent years, in between Lemonade and Renaissance, people actually listened to 4 again and realized that the album was a timeless classic that deserved a lot more praise than what it actually got during its time. Love the video regardless!!!! ♥♥
What you said at the end is so true. I've never been a Katy Perry fan, obviously I couldn't help knowing all her catchy songs but I found her really annoying... I also used to be glued Wikipedia and UA-cam always keeping on top of new music. In the last two years I've been more passive where I just throw music streaming on and let new songs come up sometimes. I started hearing the songs from Witness and Smile, which I had heard before but didn't take time to appreciate. Now I listen to her new music all the time... Music streaming has been a blow to the industry compared to selling albums, but on the flipside it means that old albums can become sleeper hits. My best friend is always bumping Artpop songs these days, so yeah he didn't buy the album but over time he's eventually gonna hit a "sale" with the number of streams. I think the industry needs to invest in more diverse avenues of success. The old #1 album model might not be reliable anymore, but it doesn't mean they should just focus purely on instant buzz and trending. Good full albums with a vision might not be appreciated right away but they gain traction, and more and more people will drop $40 on a vinyl as a hobby just to stan a good album whether it's new or old. Endrant!
Let’s be real. Flops aren’t defined by the comparison of numbers. Flops are defined by diminished attraction from those who enjoy music. Flops are defined by less enthusiasm and excitement from the audience. So, I would say that even though the sales weren’t that bad compared to other artists’ albums, these albums didn’t receive the acclaim that they were projected to given the artists’ previous successes. And most “flop” albums have good sales because of die hard fans or because of people expecting the work to be just as good as before but being let down.

@@KingTS-xt2ht i mean... i need to listen to it first fully. But ik it's more hip-hop oriented and Queen is more trap pop so idk i think Queen still may be my fav even after i listen to The Prinkprint
twitter has people in the trenchessss, it’s crazy how indigestible music has become, all because we have so much access to other people’s opinions supported by likes and eye-catching memes
26:30 omg finally someone talks about this. Artists (and especially fans) are so obsessed with going #1. Sure, a #1 album is great, but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get it. Heck, I think some of the greatest albums of this year did not reach that spot
While I enjoyed queen, I truly love pinkprint. I didn’t really watch interviews of her explaining this era, but pink print was so stripped back on so many of the songs like crying game, but a heart, all things go. I feel like it was so well rounded in everything and honestly I feel is a bit slept on
Artpop has always been good though and may not just be the sound people were ready for the time it's released. It's silly and that's what drew me in. I probably listen to it more than Joanne or Chromatica. Maybe even Born This Way. GUY is a major bop. 👏👏👏
Impossible Princess by Kylie Minogue was criticised for her shift from pop to a more experimental sound. The British press tore her apart, and Kylie stated she would never put out an album like it again. Years later, it has now retrospectively garnered acclaim, as well as being recognised as being one of those instances where two different artists come out with a body of work with similar ideas (in the case of Madonna and Ray of Light, though this was acclaimed upon release, and Impossible Princess came out first).
OH GOD I LOVE IMPOSSIBLE PRINCESS! Hey do you know Exodus too? It's by Hikaru Utada and it's been ignored even though in my opinion the album is GOOD. Both Kylie and Hikaru are my secret faves, just so you know. 🎶
Your videos are so easy to digest and you're so likeable! Thanks for all your hard work! I personally loved Bon Appetit, it's such a fun song. One of her best in my opinion. Smile was absolutely disrespected! I'm not even a Katy stan (Gaga & Bey stan) but I will fight for Witness & Smile lol
when you talked about the Queen album i got 2018 flashbacks the hate train was at its peak and it was BAD and i mean BAD for the barbs we were fighting for our lives on twitter every single day defending Nicki. hate tweets, photoshopped images, and false rumors and accusations were coming in left and right we were getting hit from every angle we couldn’t catch a break the general public and everyone was against us and i don’t think we talk enough about how detrimental all that must’ve been for Nicki’s mental health my mother literally had the entire industry against her and was painted to be the “angry black women” every time she defended herself and spoke out against the higher ups in the industry.
Artpop is the album that turned me into a gaga fan ❤️i was a casual fan before , just a fan of the hit singles never really got into her albums ... but artpop gave me wings man !! The amount of times i just danced around blasting swine as loud as i could is one of my deerest memories of falling in love with music ❤️
Fun fact: Queen which is supposed to be Nickis “flop” did 78,000 pure sales first week while Rihanna’s anti did 1,000 pure sales first week. Pink Friday Nicki’s highest selling album 375,000 first week. Sold higher than Rihannas highest first week sales which is 207,000 for her loud album.
I just want to say, I just stumbled across your channel and I am impressed. I usually find the toxic wasteland that is pop culture journalism appalling, but you provide a very balanced outlook on things that is entertaining and informative without being distasteful and I appreciate that!
Another “flop” era imo is Janet Jackson’s, Damita Jo era due to the Super Bowl incident’s black balling from Les Moonves. I think more people just realized how great and slept on this album is sense the GP is now giving Janet her flowers in general.
Honestly, I don’t think Gaga was wrong about ArtPop being experimental and challenging because well…it was I remember Mic The Snare made a good point about how while EDM was extremely popular in 2013, ArtPops EDM was not conventional compared to say, Calvin Harris or Aviici or other EDM artists who were extreme popular around this time when it came to the sound of the album like with songs such as “Aura” or “Swine” or “Venus” Especially when you compared the album to Roar, which many did compare it too, and it’s certainly aged better I also think one thing that should’ve been brought up was Gaga’s Rape. She revealed not long after ArtPop was released that she was raped when she was signed to Def Jam by one of their producers and she suffered from PTSD and later on, she then said she was left pregnant by the assault back in 2006-2007 when she was signed to Def Jam at 19 after months of abuse and she was later dropped by the label before she signed to Akon’s label. And songs like “Swine” were made about her rapist and even the music video for “Marry The Night” seems to have hinted at the aftermath of her rape and also is why Gaga had that model do….THAT during Swine at ArtRave. So her mental health wasn’t doing that well during ArtPop and it seems like she was really hyping up ArtPop because that in a way was her therapy and her way of coping with the trauma and distracting herself from everything that’s happened to her
For how big DaBaby was, I’m genuinely shocked to see him fall off so bad. So many rappers have done/said a lot worse & still have full careers, it’s just very interesting to see! Also side note, you’re very pretty 🥰
SAme. How do you go from 3 platinum albums straight to having to beg people to buy your tickets so fast? I guess his antics just turned alot of people off
It's a crime that I keep coming back to your videos but for some reason haven't subscribed. Honestly your content is so entertaining and well thought out. ❤
a fantastic example of an album at release being called a flop (or whatever term would be used in 2009, fail?) is fall out boy's 'folie a deux'. at the time, the public and fans alike hated the album so much they would boo the band off stage if the songs were played, and was a piece in the band deciding to go on their hiatus, for sure but folie is now, even by the general audience and fans alike, seen as one of their best albums in all facets. it really does just come down to public perception at that time, and what the people with the loudest voices say, that everyone else seems to follow. but given time, those loud voices quiet down on their opinions, or move onto slating something else and the general audience can finally go consume the work in their own time and form their own opinions, which usually leads to (like you said for artpop) a renaissance. great video, its so fascinating how much this happens with artists time and time again.
I’m surprised you spent so much time covering DaBaby instead of something like Christina Aguilera’s Bionic. Plus Lorde’s Solar Power! Or even Janet’s Damita Jo. I’m sure there are a few other notable examples, so we definitely need a part 2!
I spent so much time covering Dababy bc it was a hot topic at the time I made the video. But yea, I’ve made a series so I can mention some of the albums I didn’t in the vid!!
i love artpop. ive always loved artpop, definitely my favourite gaga project (followed by the fame monster), im so glad people are coming around to it even though it's been a decade
ARTPOP era promotion was one bad decision following another 😢 She wanted Aura as lead single(Aura was supposed to close the trilogy Paparazzi - Telephone - Aura) but the label wanted Applause( which almost got scrapped by Gaga cause she didn’t like it that much) plus they made Gaga changed Aura lyrics and original vocals to make it more “radio friendly” 👿 Not gonna say much about Carter leaving her right before ARTPOP’s release cause he didn’t believe in the project and she being forced to sign a confidentiality contract 💀
Literally so happy to subscribe, because I can binge watch your videos for days on end!! This was a really great video! If you ever do a part two to this video, there are two albums that you didn’t mention that’d be interesting to dive into: star-crossed by Kacey Musgraves: following her pop crossover/mainstream success with the 2018 album, Golden Hour (my personal favorite album of that year), star-crossed was hyped across the media for various reasons. While it did just about as well on the charts as GH, fans and critics found star-crossed inferior to its predecessor. Bankrupt! by Phoenix: for the indie music lovers, this 2013 album was the highly anticipated follow to the French band’s 2009 breakthrough album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (an album universally praised and produced several hit singles such as 1901 and Liztomania). Big festivals such as Coachella and Primavera Sound booked the band in headlining spots banking on Bankrupt! to be a success! When released though, it didn’t receive as much acclaim as WAP and didn’t sell nearly as much as projections were for it.
@@naomi.cannibal AAAAHHHH!!! The taste jumped out!!! 🔥 Okay so tbh, I was only a casual fan of theirs for a few years, but then I went to see them perform a couple of months ago and yeah it turned me into a big fan of theirs!! Alpha Zulu is definitely one of my top albums of this year, so good imo!!
Not only did explain the artpop very well but you also low key explained why I didn’t take Gaga seriously at the height of her popularity at that time (2009-2013) bc her public persona was so different than what her music represented, meaning she always presented herself as this avant garde, politically and socially conscious artist when her music was nothing of the sort and when she tried to match it with born this way and artpop it fell extremely flat, it’s weird how she presented herself as different from the female pop girls of that era but she was really no different from them musically speaking. I always felt someone like Janelle monae or M.I.A. were what Gaga thought her music was at that time mainly artpop but just never got their credit for it.
I feel like it’s because people think pop is inherently “low brow” and always want their music to be seen as more complex or more valuable than regular pop. And I honestly hate that bc pop is called “pop” bc it’s popular… but a lot of people want their art to be seen as exclusive and not easily understood by the masses. Idk I think it’s just typical artist elitism in a way, so many singers do it. It’s okay to make your pop as long as you make it well, it doesn’t have to be more than that for it to be valuable!
@@naomi.cannibal right I feel that same way I can’t stand that elitist attitude and having the pretentious thought into thinking your art is groundbreaking or adding anything innovative to the game when it’s not and that’s fine folks who are really doing that are usually artists that are seen as “low brow” bc they are actually challenging status quos of society and culture without making it their whole persona or attitude
@@Kevin-rg3yc this is probably their reaction to treatment they receive within the industry- they overcompensate and have this complex due to how they’re treated by their peers.
The problem is, and I’m not a Gaga Stan, but when it comes to the promotion of albums especially if you’re a bigger artist and the label has higher stakes on you, if you aren’t promoting your album like it’s the best thing to exist on planet earth, you get scolded. It creates this really awful impression of holier than thou from artists in promo jnterveiws
Stan Twitter treat artists like sports teams. Everything is always about numbers and beating out other people. I feel like the term ‘flop era’ is indicative of that attitude. It’s weird way to engage with music.
The fact that its been 16 years but Taylor never really has a "flop" era tells you so much how much of a force she is in the music industry. *THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.*
@Lara wow I can’t believe you said that since you are a women itself . Did u really think woman cannot succeed without man involved ?? What wrong with you ?
People esp on stan twt are so hypocritical they say people who are not getting as much as before are flops when their "flop era" is outdoing their faves....
Bionic I feel was truly disrespected and proof of how the media never really tried to her as more than a foil for other femmele artists, love the vid, and love your channel
Personally I feel bad for Katy the most when it comes to the music industry. She has her bad moments but from the start she was constantly underestimated. If you watch her documentary and how she got her label deal. It was rough. She asked her own 16 year old brother for money cuz she was struggling. Then the industry forced her to go by “Katy Perry” and change her whole aesthetic. She became quirky and fun and a party girl but the real Katy wasn’t able to show herself. She also was working with the highly infamous Dr. Luke on a majority of her albums and songs and there were rumors Dr. Luke did things to her when Kesha came out with those allegations (along with lady Gaga). I follow her on Instagram and she just seems so lost. It’s kinda sad. She’s had it rlly tough and wish she would get some actual help and take a break from being a celebrity. Besides that. Witness had potential for some great singles. She shouldn’t done chained to the rhythm, Save as Draft for her second for some relatability and seriousness, and then Hey hey hey as a fun catchy song for jokes. I love her but don’t she will comeback again. She just got in controversy for voting for a Republican. Sad.
@@arianalikens5300 was it outta fear of the industry and complete shunning or was it actually her completely denying them. We don’t know. Lady gaga also denied the claims. We don’t know what happens behind closed doors in this industry. Dr. Luke is powerful which is why he’s still making tons of money and hits like “unholy” by using a different name.
@@FallBrandyn48013 I've been a katycat since 2008 and she has always been one of the most honest ppl kesha and gaga were both wrong for spreading false rumors about her that was not cool
Enough time has passed; we can now say that Witness was not just a "flop era" it was a downward spiral, the beginning of the end, it's just Katy Perry sinking deeper and deeper, the point of no return and ending just as badly as Da Baby.
I think a low selling album is expected. It’s like a lottery tho if you think about it. But the comeback always makes it better 🤣. And the “flop” albums usually end up getting loved later in time…. Sometimes lmao
great video👑 I would however add Madonnas „Erotica“ album. For Madonna it was a „flop“ at the time, but it did revolutionize the industry when it comes to sexually explicit themes. It‘s daring and challeneged the industry at the time and showcased Madonnas creativity.
I listen to Nicki’s QUEEN album more now and I realize how special and perfectly executed each song is. I do believe the Nicki hate train caused a lot of doubt but Nicki’s pen was ahead of it’s time. She’s having a great year and I’m convinced she is better than ever and only competes with male rappers now. There’s no doubt, Nicki Minaj continues to be the Queen of Hip Hop. 🐥💕👑🦄
I think most of these artists have amazing work, but compared to previous works added to the “self sabotage”/doubt made them actual flops. Almost like they manifested the poor sales by admitting the bad sales. You don’t see Beyoncé, Gaga, or even Chloe mention poor sales when it happens. “Fake it till you make it” is the game and it looks like even the most problematic artists weren’t able to do so, especially with overt issues that contradict what they stand for.
The Queen album is amazing, but her mostly negative view on the environment surrounding Queen made it almost impossible to view the album as a positive. Because after all, who wants to listen to an album that even the artist is saying, is not doing well? Or someone that preaches specific stances but lacks direct examples of those exact stances?
The way Katy mumbles through Swish Swish makes her look like an older person that's trying to be cool and make a "hip" song but is completely diffident in their ability to do it 🤣
Unfortunately I recorded this before DaBaby was caught handing out tickets at Cheesecake Factory…

one of the reasons why i respect Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Rihanna is that they know how to not let a flop era get to them.
I feel like Glitter was ahead of its time. People called Loverboy a flop when it was a great single, even with the BTS sabotage.
Emancipation of mini was fire!!! I loved that album even now.
Glitter is now iconic.

Obviously they've left their mark

@@famemosterrrrr of course, just as any person in music does. I am not sure what point your comment is in connection to or what it is trying to prove.
the thing is with ARTPOP it is ironic how in it's first week it is very promoted which led to it being number one. songs like dope (a promo single) debuted at 8.
Since you mentioned it: you should make a video on artists who are known more for their singles rather than a full album, and vice versa!

The girls had little to no creative control over their career choices (except for camila who was given certain privileges that the other girls weren't.)
Their label was really just setting them up to fail in hopes that camila would be the breakout star and secure the bag for them.
The saddest part about the whole fifth harmony situation is that they had the potential to be even bigger than they were if they were given freedom with their creative choices. They are all genuinely so talented and their label really screwed things up because they let of what could have been the biggest girl group. They even got along well but their work conditions made things awkward between them (especially when one member was clearly being favoured over the rest.)
After camila left, fifth harmony got little to NO promotion at all for their album and were refused to include certains songs that they wanted to include in the album. Their last album has some bangers but because they had already been painted as bitxhes who bullied their member out of their group, most people were rooting for their downfall and hoping for them to flop - which they did. _Fifth Harmony,_ the album deserved so much more. The girls deserved so much more (not camila tho idc about her racist ass)
[EDIT] Just want to add that: this girl group was not only full of creative, intelligent, funny and talented women, they were also one of the most diverse girl groups of all time and that was also a big reason for all the fame and love they received.
Artpop was honestly my favorite album
Yeah because anything goes in this world now.
I mean her chromatica album didn’t do that well either. It’s not that big of a different sound from artpop

It's such a good song, it can easily reach #1 on billboard. Idk why it didn't
YES ADIAML is her best album!!
Billboard did Nicki dirty they counted Travis bundle sales but didn’t count Nicki’s, that’s why he was able to go #1 for a second week. Right after she called them out they changed the merch rules.
Lmao I was so pissed
She’s rarely even respected out here in New York.
@@Jotiyh you literally wrote a whole bunch of nothing, how are you saying she’s not from here when we aren’t either? Stay in school and Learn our history. G.U.Y and Venus were SO slept on from Artpop. The music video is an artistic masterpiece
I would imagine arte pop very much IS a lady Gaga aesthetic it was just never accepted or sold by her label before arte pop
Trends from ArtPOP started picking up 5-6 years later and were praised. It was ahead of it’s time and she knew it would change music.. and it did
Gaga definitely isn't a flop. She made her mark. She got her Grammys, Emmy's, and other awards. And definitely made some hits.

i personally think fifth harmony’s self-titled album is their BEST piece of work, but i think it’s performance being low is due to multiple reasons. like u said camila’s departure was messy with her fans + little mix stans taking her side. it didn’t help that camila was talking abt her depression while in the group which led to ppl thinking she was kicked out & the girls were bullies. also the label didn’t care abt any of the girls besides her, in a note i believe lauren wrote that the label didn’t help them at all with the album & it was only a some of their team working with them who helped. i love down, but it wasn’t a good reintroduction to the public. the acoustic version is a lot better & shows off their vocals, but i think they should’ve found another song.
Omg same girly I love themmmm and I was fighting for my life back in 2016
Girl I love when you said it’s unrealistic to expect every album from an artist to get fantastic numbers/outsell their last!

I don't think ARTPOP is any lighter than Born This Way. Hell, i think it's one of her darkest bodies of work. It literally has Dope and Swine and there is this strong sarcasm running through the album. Probably my favourite album by Gaga.
Born this way’s message is uplifting. Artpop’s message is depressing. BTW’s visuals are just darker.
When I read these articles about Nicki definitely they did blackball her lol definitely but clearly she is unstoppable

when speaking about "flop" eras people forget to mention that the time we live in was different. i belive that around 2016 the internet become bigger as ever to artists. outside america: nicki, rihanna and beyoncé has larger fan bases in south america that the labels barely look to, we actually pay for concert tickets, many people book flights to watch a concert because is less expensive travel than wait for them come to any country
i don't think any of those people experienced a total flop but they conflicting personal lives affecting the work & poor decisions and bad management

Impossible Princess by Kylie Minogue was criticised for her shift from pop to a more experimental sound. The British press tore her apart, and Kylie stated she would never put out an album like it again. Years later, it has now retrospectively garnered acclaim, as well as being recognised as being one of those instances where two different artists come out with a body of work with similar ideas (in the case of Madonna and Ray of Light, though this was acclaimed upon release, and Impossible Princess came out first).

when you talked about the Queen album i got 2018 flashbacks the hate train was at its peak and it was BAD and i mean BAD for the barbs we were fighting for our lives on twitter every single day defending Nicki. hate tweets, photoshopped images, and false rumors and accusations were coming in left and right we were getting hit from every angle we couldn’t catch a break the general public and everyone was against us and i don’t think we talk enough about how detrimental all that must’ve been for Nicki’s mental health my mother literally had the entire industry against her and was painted to be the “angry black women” every time she defended herself and spoke out against the higher ups in the industry.

Even though 2013 was met with a controversy fest that year actually holds a place near to my heart!
I would pay ANY amount of money to relive 2012-2016 again
Honestly, I don’t think Gaga was wrong about ArtPop being experimental and challenging because well…it was
I remember Mic The Snare made a good point about how while EDM was extremely popular in 2013, ArtPops EDM was not conventional compared to say, Calvin Harris or Aviici or other EDM artists who were extreme popular around this time when it came to the sound of the album like with songs such as “Aura” or “Swine” or “Venus”
Especially when you compared the album to Roar, which many did compare it too, and it’s certainly aged better
I also think one thing that should’ve been brought up was Gaga’s Rape. So her mental health wasn’t doing that well during ArtPop and it seems like she was really hyping up ArtPop because that in a way was her therapy and her way of coping with the trauma and distracting herself from everything that’s happened to her
Good point!💯💯💯

Well I find myself listening to Queen album more than any Nicki's album.
a fantastic example of an album at release being called a flop (or whatever term would be used in 2009, fail?) is fall out boy's 'folie a deux'. at the time, the public and fans alike hated the album so much they would boo the band off stage if the songs were played, and was a piece in the band deciding to go on their hiatus, for sure but folie is now, even by the general audience and fans alike, seen as one of their best albums in all facets. it really does just come down to public perception at that time, and what the people with the loudest voices say, that everyone else seems to follow. but given time, those loud voices quiet down on their opinions, or move onto slating something else and the general audience can finally go consume the work in their own time and form their own opinions, which usually leads to (like you said for artpop) a renaissance. great video, its so fascinating how much this happens with artists time and time again.
omg yeees folie a deux was so ahead of its time
I’m surprised you spent so much time covering DaBaby instead of something like Christina Aguilera’s Bionic.
ARTPOP era promotion was one bad decision following another 😢 She wanted Aura as lead single(Aura was supposed to close the trilogy Paparazzi - Telephone - Aura) but the label wanted Applause( which almost got scrapped by Gaga cause she didn’t like it that much) plus they made Gaga changed Aura lyrics and original vocals to make it more “radio friendly” 👿
Not gonna say much about Carter leaving her right before ARTPOP’s release cause he didn’t believe in the project and she being forced to sign a confidentiality contract 💀
Literally so happy to subscribe, because I can binge watch your videos for days on end!! This was a really great video!
If you ever do a part two to this video, there are two albums that you didn’t mention that’d be interesting to dive into:
star-crossed by Kacey Musgraves: following her pop crossover/mainstream success with the 2018 album, Golden Hour (my personal favorite album of that year), star-crossed was hyped across the media for various reasons.
Omg!! I think you’re the first person on my channel to ever mention Phoenix I feel seen.
@@naomi.cannibal AAAAHHHH!!! The taste jumped out!!! 🔥
Okay so tbh, I was only a casual fan of theirs for a few years, but then I went to see them perform a couple of months ago and yeah it turned me into a big fan of theirs!!
Over hyped Disney channel songs
pretty easy when u buy ur way on the charts and everywhere else
@Lara where
@Lara wow I can’t believe you said that since you are a women itself . Did u really think woman cannot succeed without man involved ?? What wrong with you ?
Surely, you will find Taylor brought up in any of this video and for sure the reply section will be filled with bitter people, as always.
People esp on stan twt are so hypocritical they say people who are not getting as much as before are flops when their "flop era" is outdoing their faves....
No fr! Also saying someone else’s fave flopped/ sucks doesn’t make urs any better and that’s what I don’t get… like focus on them
Bionic I feel was truly disrespected and proof of how the media never really tried to her as more than a foil for other femmele artists, love the vid, and love your channel
Christina has always been disrespected honestly
I think Artpop was a bit ahead of it’s time. The insane and campy nature of the era is better suited for today’s pop culture.
I've only recently found your channel and I truly love it! Great topics all around.
Sad.
She said those allegations were false tho
The way Katy mumbles through Swish Swish makes her look like an older person that's trying to be cool and make a "hip" song but is completely diffident in their ability to do it 🤣
I actually loved Journals, it’s my favorite album of his
I liked journals too 🫣
Same 🥹
