I never knew this. This is the first time I'm hearing about studio vocals of J-Lo done by Brandy and Ashanti! 😬 wow, I gotta look up those songs and see if I can hear the differences.
I'm glad you opened up the video with that Beyonce clip cause the hive was about to DRAG you. Like "No my queen Beyonce defies all laws of physics and can sing flawlessly while jumping, shaking her head and bending backward". Beyonce is a great singer but she's not superhuman. She uses prerecorded vocals to put on a high energy show. She's been doing it since Destiny's Child too, there's multiple performances of Independent Woman with the same exact vocals. The average person just can't tell...
@@naomi.cannibal great video, next do a video on rappers getting arrested for their lyrics. it’s been happening a lot lately, especially if you come from New York.
It's always smart to start with a Beyoncé clip tho, if you want your little essay vid to get clout, she needs to be the target, u know them cliché comments saying "oh the beehive coming for u"
I don't mind lipsyncing/backing track when the choreography is too hard or when there is no background vocalists to help the singers. Personally, I would prefer people like Chungha who sing the hard parts of the song and leave the easy parts to the backing track. Now I don't respect people who use other singers' voices because they don't fit an aesthetic.
Kinda wish you mentioned my favorite part of the Beyonce inauguration controversy. When she first walked out, told the reporters to stand up, then sang the national anthem LIVE at the press conference to confirm that she is in fact that girl and can sing if she wants to.
Mariah has sang live (and still does) countless times! When she lip-syncs is not a big deal to me because I know she can really sing. Especially at this point.
She have vocal nodules, and if she doesn't rest well she sings awful, but i mean she have probe herself and we she sings live you can still hear she have maintain the same quality we heard when she started; she takes care of herself.
She pretty much ruined her voice, she cannot do any high notes anymore for the most part, especially the whistle notes. She was just worked too hard and she sang live night after night after night and it cost her dearly. She's a legend that paid her dues with thousands of live performances that were never lip synced, so now she should be given leeway for lip syncing, she gave us years and years of amazing singing and put herself through hell for us, so if she lipsyncs now it's irrelevant.
As a big Michael Jackson fan I agree with everything you said. In the 70s and 80s Michael sang 95% of of his songs live. But by the mid 90s we very rarely heard him sing live because of the damage to his voice. If he would have embraced syncing early maybe his voice would have last longer.
@@lionsheart1582 what do you mean by his singing technique was bad? From what I know Michael trained his voice all time, I think the problem was he was just doing way to many shows. Go look up the Bad Tour schedule, it was absolutely inhuman. About the singing that apply for his songs with heavy dancing but later in his life he lip synced to songs with very little to no dancing.
I can understand lipsyncing as a mean to preserve your voice. With tight schedule of shows, performances and interviews without period for "voice calming" (don´t know the right english term) I can only imagine how demanding it must be. Hell, opera singers didn´t speak for days before and after their performance! Also dancing and singing at the same time is haaaaard.
I don’t care if your lip synching to your own voice but if your lip synching to other peoples vocals and taking credit for it like it’s your voice you deserve to be held accountable. You are profiting off of other peoples work. I can see why Milli Vanilli was cancelled.
I agree but I feel so bad for them because they could actually sing and they were taken advantage of but they got most of all the backlash and not the slimy company
Some artists (BRANDY or Jazmine Sullivan ) and often times a lot of Gospel artists who are trained in live performances get a reverse reaction where people prefer their live vocals to their studio versions of songs
Britney Spears gets a pass because she performs her ass off and it’s no secret that she lip syncs lol she’s a lip singing queen. I think us stans know that her record label absolutely destroyed her vocal cords by making her do the baby voice for years when her natural voice was a deeper voice.
She can sing it’s just not strong and she probably had no one taking care of her voice during the conservatorship, also not getting her a good singing tutor, to help her vocals get stronger. Britney would of done the time and work to get a strong voice but it’s just poor management on her team and the fact that they just rushed her to do music instead of making her voice strong
So much this ! And although there's proof here on UA-cam that she had a pretty powerful voice as a child there are still ppl who claim she can't sing and never could sing. They get on my nerves so much. Just google it you dmb bish 💀
@@Peterrdee it’s the other way around. britney always had a great voice. if you watch her performance on star search or the mickey mouse club you can hear how powerful her vocals were at that time. she has a naturally deeper voice as well. you can hear her real voice in certain songs on her first album. the machine behind her never really cared about her voice. it was all about the image and topping the charts. they saw a talented girl and relegated her to a sex symbol. and they pushed the baby voice because they didn’t want another ballad singer; they knew that voice wasn’t going to appeal to her demographic. but it’s not because she didn’t have a strong voice, it was the opposite. everything they did with her was intentional, she was manufactured to be a teen popstar. she recently posted videos of her singing and her voice is so strained. i think we as listeners underestimate what changing your voice and constantly performing actually does to your vocal chords. she never had to work for a strong voice because she always had it. it just got worse when she overworked it.
I can understand lip syncing sometimes. To catch a breath from dancing and performing like Beyoncé, or on tour like Abel and losing your voice, or on thick plat form heels like Ariana Grande. However, to lip syncing the entire song just loses the statement as a vocalist.
I was low key against lip syncing UNTIL I saw Britney’s Circus tour and was BLOWN AWAY. I ended up getting into a concersation with my dad (who is a huge Kate Bush fan and watched her last live performance), who told me that she at some point said ‘you can either have a *performance* or live vocals, you cannot have both’ Im sure he was paraphrasing and Km sure there are exceptions (Bjork) but it made me respect lipsynced shows as a totally differrnt kind of a performance to a sung performance
Yeah I never understood people that hate on performers who are dancers. Let them dance. I'm fine with them lip singing if they're giving us the show of a lifetime. As long as they song live during ballads or sumn.
You actually can have both but only a few artists can pull it off. I guess it also depends on personal preferences. The artist also can't be too greedy and schedule too many back to back performances. You need to allow time for rest so you can always give it your all for each performance. The paying audience need to be respected too.
Idk why the Beyhive gets mad when beyonce gets caught lip syncing cus she has proved that she can sing without auto tune and lip syncing, the thing is that it’s not bad for her to use pre recorded stuff cus Beyoncé is dancing her butt off while singing live, but may need help from background vocals at the same time cus it’s hard to keep ur breath
We get mad because a lot of times the lip syncing part is often used to downplay her greatness as a live performer and incredible vocalists. Those lip syncing part are used to discret her abilities. That's why I hate it.
@@naomi.cannibal next do a video on artists who don’t own their Masters and publishing, look what Taylor Swift is going through.. I’m a huge supporter of ownership of one’s art, but you can’t re-create the same album again., It won’t be the same. each album captures a specific moment in time, and when you have to redo it all over again, that vibe is gone.
@@123theprodigy5 Yeahh lets talk about how they catalogs and how they kept it. I wanna see expose on Tommy Mottola next too the way he treated artists and how Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson expose him.

Lip syncing is HUGE in kpop and it's very normalized unlike in the American Music Industry where it isn't as excepted. Aside from Aespa, most other groups don't get hated on for lip syncing. I think the reason why it's so normalized in kpop is because groups often dance and many groups are known for intense choreography. AND THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT HOW JUDGEMENTAL STANS ARE. It's ridiculous that idols are hated on for lip syncing AND not singing 100% perfect everytime.
While it is normal, kpop groups still get hate for lip syncing. They’re are constant discussions trying to break down which performances are live and which arent
Honestly a lot of kpop choreographies in my opinion aren’t hard very easy tiktok challenge type dance moves and they STILL lip sync especially a lot of girl groups
Lip syncing is like photoshop for models. I’m sure these models may have pimples or bloating on a bad day like how singers maybe having a rough day or the dancing maybe too intense. But just like photoshop, it’s gotten out of hand where it creates an environment where they are not allowed to be imperfect and people have literally forgotten what human beings sounds like. I don’t mind lip syncing but I feel so bad that these idols can’t sing live anymore like in the past generations because there is this new standard
Yes. Thank you. You are speaking the truth. If models can be photo shopped or have plastic surgery then lip syncing should be the standard for a singer. As long as the original tracks are sung by the said singer.
@@JovialSentiments what makes it even worse is when you can tell autotune was heavily used during the studio recording. So they're lip syncing to autotuned recording. The artist has to at least try to perform their song live once in awhile so we can tell if they can even sing in the first place.
Mariah's two performances everyone loves to bring up constantly, Rockefeller Center and New Year's, were both outside in the FREEZING cold in New York City. The fact that she even attempted to do it is admirable IMO bc everyone else lip syncs for their life during performances outside in NYC (the Thanksgiving Day parade for example).
After the Rockefeller performance in 2014, she nailed it at the Christmas concert she gave at the Beacon Theater a few days later. When she's well rested, she can sing her ass off. Not being able to your during the pandemic has done wonders for her voice lately.
@@rustyperry9414 Yes I was at that concert! I've actually seen Mariah live several times. And when the performances are more intimate and not such high stakes (like Rockefeller or NYE) she always sounds amazing. She has said she gets stage fright and does not like performing outside.
Ugh I can't believe Beyonce had to give a statement on the inauguration. If she did sing live and give a subpar performance she would still get dragged. She can't win! She didn't want to take attention away from the inauguration but it still didn't work, people are annoying!
JLo reminds me of Úrsula in The Little Mermaid- just going around making deals to take the vocals of black women. I want to know why she’s so obsessed? I love that one video of Jlo with her kids and an Ashanti song came on and her kids start cracking up and looking at Jlo like they full on know Ashanti been payin some of their bills 😂😂😂
If an artist is lip syncing I don’t have a problem if they can actually SING. I do however have a problem with them lip syncing while delivering a below average performance. Everyone has off days but don’t forget the main focus is your ability to sing.
I’m glad you included Aespa in this, SM really doesn’t do them justice. It’s kinda sad actually, they’ve proven that they can sing live, but their management doesn’t let them, which ended up hurting their stage presence and making them one of the most hated groups in recent kpop :(
Many other Kpop groups lip sync and get easily get away with it due to amazing stage presence and putting up a good show, but æspa’s stage presence is pretty weak and that’s what attracted all the hate
If I’m in a lounge or a more intimate setting, I prefer live performances. At a concert or a bigger performance, I really don’t care if they lip sync. I’m a singer and dancer, and I know how hard it is to do both, even with the best training in the world. That’s why I have such high respect for theater actors and performers. To be able to pull off those musicals live is superhuman! And maybe some of them are lip syncing too. Oh well…
i also think that lip syncing in general is good for dancing performances. it’s easier to stay on beat/time with the music while you dance bc of the mental and physical resonance. many dancers who aren’t singers will still move their mouths, lip synching by big artists is just a more cleaned up version of it
Beyoncé also it's very strategic with her songs: she compose them on a way where she sings one part, dances the other one, catch her breath and sings the one line again. I imagine she have songs with loud playback that are filling and leave her wits with the most climatic ones, i.e: Halo on live with low pre-recorded vocals in volume.
Whitney Houston literally stated (in Oprah's interview) that women's menstrual can affects vocal chords That's why I never slander any woman's performance that is lip syncing because I really never know I don't think it's a big ordeal
@@whitneyfan7107 normalize comprehension skills because I never accused Whitney of Lip Syncing I brought up a fact she made about how a menstral cycle can affect women's vocal chords which may be a reason why some may choose to lip sync Stan pages need to learn to read and comphend instead always being ready to attack someone
So excited for this one! I knew it would be good! I'd like to watch a video on your opinion of the VMA's through the years. How the early years are a million times different now. How it seems like the shows now are trying top hard to make "memes" or get people talking about it, shock value instead of being about celebrating the music, artists, and their work over the year.
@@naomi.cannibal maybe when you’re a hologram, it’ll be possible to do acrobatics and sing at the same time. but for now, it’s literally impossible to do crazy dance moves and perform stunts and sing at the same time.

As someone who performs on stage and writes and records I will say that getting on stage and dancing while singing / rapping a song is legit the same amount of effort to run a football field. People think it’s just a easy thing to do but it’s like going to the gym and busting ass for 2 hours. I also have done plays where you don’t get the chance to mess up and I played Orin the dentist in my highschool play ( first black Orin the dentist in east side of nc where I live… and I learned first hand the amount of control and breath control you have to have . I’ve always wanted to be a star and once I started performing I realized how damn difficult it is so the fact some of these artist like Beyoncé can do all that and still sing live is impressive. People do not understand how physically fit and demanding it is to perform on stage. Take Saweetie for example , no shade, but she doesn’t put in the excercise work and breath control that’s needed which is why she sounds like she ate 1 Big Macs a large fry and lobster legs with hella butter. Any artist who is brave enough to bust it on stage live is extremely impressive in my opinion. Imagine going to the gym for 2 hours but not being able to take breaks in between
I think the thing with K-Pop acts is that if you build a career off lip synching and just dancing through the whole thing, you never actually get better at singing live. That's historically how acts who can actually perform live got to their level...by actually doing it. I think Britney Spears is a good example of that. With Britney she only had to sing live every once in awhile so vocally she never evolved. Christina is a naturally better singer, but she went on world tours singing live as much as possible and it shows.
When you talked about kpop now having even more lip sync, yes!!! It’s so obvious now is crazy and this is why I’m like “why not do easier choreo” they always wanna go hard on it but then fail at the singing and you can notice they get very tired. One thing I have noticed is that blackpink gets hate for “easy” choreo (emphasis on easy bc I bet those who talk could never dance and sing better than them) yet they sound really good live, Coachella is a very clear example.
The reason why Britney lypsync isn’t because she can’t sing cause she has a very beautiful voice ,her team just didn’t like her original voice and gave her an other voice the other reason is she a performer so when you dance a lot on stage your voice gets tired and it makes it harder to control your voice while you’re dancing so that’s why she does it to help her while she performs just like Aaliyah and Ciara as well ,they sang live but were lipsyncing at times due to their hard choreography on stage that could be exhausting.
Nah Britney just can't sing period,, even the lip syncing sounds bad ...Britney is the embodiment of everything that is fake in Hollywood in my opinion .. I remember back in 2007 when watching something on TV the news interrupted a good show I was watching to say that Britney was driving somewhere and a helicopter was following her car on the highway like she was O.J Simpsons ..
it's important to understand that different performances can have different priorities. some of them meant to provide full visual and musical stimulation so lipsyncing or at least a back track is a must. others focus on live vocals so artists usually would be sitting or standing. dancing WHILE singing is not a thing
I feel like in K-Pop I don't really care about lip syncing because they are not taught to be vocally creative, so the note changes, ad libs, and extra runs heard by Western Singers live performances aren't done in a K-Pop performance. Idols are taught to recreate the studio version and thats it. Therefore, I'd rather hear a nice pre recorded version of the song than a shaky studio version.
Depends on the group 🤔 there are groups like BTOB or Pentagon, they song live most of the time bc 1. they can't lipsynch and can't do it without looking super off 2. they like to add something extra during each stage, be it choreo change or new different adlib, like they enjoy performing and have actual fun on stage. Veterans can be very creative if they only want to...
What are you talking abt they are taught to be vocally creative It’s all through 1st & 2nd gen Literally the whole K-pop training system is stolen from the west. Even why they comeback now and you watch their live performances they just be SANGING. Idk what’s up with the new gen but weeekly be doing their thing and XG (though they are Japanese) idols were not taught to my knowledge to recreate studio versions. If you took a K-pop deep dive you would notice this. However i will say training periods were longer back in the day like 6-8+ yrs. Then why they debut they hit the ground running live singing majority of the time. It wasn’t until recently K-pop start pumping out groups faster, shorting the training period. Therefore these new idols dnt have the stage presence, vocal ability, dance skills as their predecessors. And you can see the stark contrast when 2nd gen comes back. 2nd gen groups bring personality to the stage even when they are lip syncing SNSD,SUJU,2PM, HIGHLIGHTING/BEAST, BTOB, BIGBANG, SHINEE, 2ne1 performance at Coachella ( Dara lost her shoe! ) hell when that Mommy group of 2nd gen idols (M.M.D) they performed circles around these new idols and they were just releasing one song, had ppl begging for them to stay a group. Idk what’s going on with the K-pop training system now, are the following the west and throwing out the system? Bc it’s not looking good over here with these new western artists either. They dnt perform, sing, or have stage presence, like why are you on the stage? Hopefully, K-pop will gets it’s act together bc these idols ain’t idoling like they use to. That is a big reason why I dnt stan 3 & 4th gen groups bc what are they giving me to Stan? Half ass performances and mediocrity? Plus the lip syncing! All of that combined does not get me to Stan. Dnt get me started on the songs! K-pop use to be hit after hit after hit! Groups that were my fandoms enemy had hits! you couldn’t deny, had to sing them in the shadows. You think K-pop fans are scary now?! It wasn’t too long ago where they would literally fight you on the street on sight! Now ppl just argue online which is really not bad at all thb bc you can just block ppl. That’s better than blocking fist 😂 idols use to be TRAINED imo I think companies have noticed that new fans dnt have standards and they are just debuting anyone for a quick buck. Bc these idols today would not have survived during the golden era 08-15. Definitely would probably had gotten a black ocean and some eggs thrown their way. Fans were crazy back then, dang.
Wow what a great video I am really glad you did this. When I grew up all the way from the '70s to through the 80s people always lip synced on TV like you said American Bandstand any major variety show they were lip syncing. To me it's still not that big of a deal if the person's up there performing in front of me and it's live to be honest there are people who lip sync and use pre-recorded tracks all the time and people don't know. What you said about music videos funny story I actually had a girl who really thought Bobby Brown was singing Don't Be Cruel live in the video sitting in a car. I know right it was funny I had to explain to her what lip syncing was. And of course when a lot of artists get older they go down a key so they don't sing the song in the same key they used to because they are older and they just can't hit those notes anymore or doing it on a regular basis like you said would strain their voice.
That’s hilarious because when I was a child I really thought artists were singing live in their videos until my mom explained to me what lol syncing was 😂
I'm mixed with the whole lip-syncing debacle. On one hand, it's hard to sing and dance at the same time during live performances and for biopics about musicians, I know the actor might not have the same vocal range as the musician they’re playing though some do sing themselves. On the other hand, most of them rely on autotune and sound awful in live performances.
Practice makes perfect, if an artist does more lip- Syncing than actual singing, their ability to sing live might depreciate, so a way to balance singing live & having audio backing without damaging the vocals is important.
lmao remember when BTS got "cancelled" for breathing?? I remember BTS getting absolutely sh!t on and draged for a few weeks because of their breathing while performing!! BTS had a performance of Blood Sweat and Tears on Korean TV in 2016 and they pretty much sang the whole thing live. It was early promotion and they probably didn't have the most expensive mics yet to filter a lot of it out. I admit it was a little bit distracting at first because it distorted the audio a little bit but it didn't take away from the performance at all and I absolutely appreciated them singing live!! There was still a backing track but it was very quiet and didn't have the whole song playing through, but only harmonies behind them. BTS performed and you were able to hear their breathing at some parts, especially after the song was done and they waved goodbye, their mics picked up that they were nearly out of breath afterwards. It started a whole hate train of people "rather having them lip-synch" than hearing them breathe, how "talentless and untrained" BTS are because they haven't practiced enough to sing live "without breath control".... Nowadays the playback and the live recordings of many K-Pop artits stages have intentional breathing in them to make them seem/sound like they are live, eventhough you can clearly tell the artist in mouthing the words. I just think this is kinda funny.
Thank you for this video. It's nice to hear someone giving logical arguments for once. I honestly just straight up avoid this discussion on twitter, because most kpop stans seem to criticize the reasonable and defend the unreasonable. Not strictly related to the topic, but still about vocals: my 'favorite' is people fighting tooth and claw to proove the edited vocals in pre-recorded performances (especially from the pandemic era) are raw vocals. Honey, no.
This video is great and a-lot of artists do lip synch most times due to vocal straining or stuff, like an example Michael Jackson’s vocals got strained from his bad tour and with those strained vocals he had to lip synch for his 2 other solo tours Dangerous tour and HIStory tour which make sense why he lip synched like 90% of the HIStory tour and prob 75% for dangerous tour
Dangerous World Tour is like 50%. Wanna Be Starting Something, I Want You Back, The Love You Save, I Just Can't Stop Loving You, She's Out Of My Life, Billie Jean, Beat It, Working Day And Night & I'll Be There were all sung live. Jam, Thriller, Smooth Criminal, Man In The Mirror, Black Or White, Heal The World, Will You Be There & Dangerous were lipped w/ some LIVE adlibs.
@@Sttephy30 yeah sorry my mistake but it would be 75% lip synch with the full setlist because from his 8th show he removed Bad and The Way You Make Me Feel which had ad-libs at the end
They did Audrey dirty on my fair lady. She was told she would sing, and the ghost singer would only fill in for the toughest parts, she put the work and if you listen to some of her original recordings that survived, and she's clearly not a classically trained singer but she has a decent voice albeit limited for the part. She later found out she'd be fully dubbed and she was humiliated.
@@rigo8720 That was the case with a lot of acts, especially in dance music. Even back in the 1960s Darlene Love sang for The Crystals and was never credited for it. In the 1990s, Martha Wash sued at least two different musical acts that used her vocals without consent. And apparently, in Europe it wasn't uncommon for acts to do what Milli Vanilli did. The producer who put them together did the same thing with another group called Boney M. He never outed them though.
I know this is an old comment, but I definitely agree with you. They didn’t even want to lip sync, they were conned by their manager/producer. He told them that they would sing on the album and got them to sign a contract with him (if I remember correctly at least one of them could barely read the language the contract was written in). After they signed, he then told them that they would just be lip syncing and he’d let them sing the next album, and they were both broke so they couldn’t hire a lawyer to get out of the contract and just had to go with it.
Thanks for another informative video! I’d heard bits and pieces of many of these controversies before, but I never knew the whole story with all the context. It’s funny how much of entertainment is just the audience and the performer jointly buying into a fantasy.
I love how you explain lip syncing in this video. it sounds fair bc tbh it's not a crime as people try to make it..talk ab people expecting perfection when they aren't perfectionist themselves.
When I first discovered channel I was like “another documentary channel 🙄” but baby!!! You shut my mouth! This episode is everything especially when you get to the broadway! The research!’ The research!!!! Thank you and I apologize.
Great video as always! 💜 I also think another good point is that lip syncing or singing over pre recorded vocals can be fun for artists, like how it’s fun to sing along while you listen to music or how it’s fun to lip sync for TikTok’s & stuff.
I hate when some artist get crapped on for lip syncing because singing constantly touring performing it really does strain the vocal chords and you can damage them badly without rest or proper treatment i made that mistake and ended up getting nodes I lost almost 2 pitches and my voice cracks everynow and then
I prefer live performances, but I'm also very accepting of fails. You can't have both at every single note of every single performance of a career. My favourite group almost never misses (Muse) but I also accept that it's hard to sing live and they're slowly getting old, so the vocals won't be that stellar forever. People who want live performances but can't actually tell what is autotuned or lipsynced and criticise actual live mistakes are the worst
Same sis I rather hear a studio lip sync with some good ass dance moves and then seeing the energy and effort in the choreography from the artist then to sit and watch them stand and just sound like Fergie singing the National anthem lol. That’s why i love Britney’s little “woo’s” when she’s performing live lmao 🤣 btw love your video content❤
I am not mad at Queen Bey. She had a good point…the inauguration was not about her. She shouldn’t have to prove anything at this point in her career. We know she can sing, and we know she can sing live, so why risk flubbing the performance when that’s all she would hear about for the rest of her career when it should have been about President Obama. She should not be the star of the show. I’m proud of her as well.
Naomi I’ve been loving your videos!!! I don’t understand why u don’t have more subscribers! I love your honesty and transparency. I also agree how lip syncing is very much a nuanced topic, and I can see why some entertainers would choose to do so. Thank u for this thorough video 🥰
Lady Gaga lipsynced her Super bowl ? Im pretty sure she hasn't in both national anthem and halftime because there are mic feeds for both performances online. I could be wrong though idk
I actually think Naomi meant Lady Gaga DID NOT lip sync cause she shows her saying "very few artists sung live at the SB". 🤔🤔🤔 Seems like she took Gaga as one of the examples of SB live singers.
Personally I would rather an artists has “bad” performances sometimes but doesn’t lip sing too often (unless they’re dancing or sick of course !). That’s just me tho, bc I think i like to know the full extent to an artists singing abilities even if they’re not always perfect. In fact pitchy or nasally vocals often make the live experience more special for me bc I can tell the artist is getting emotional, and emotion is what makes concerts truly great.I’m talking abt non pop concerts, obviously. But I think it applies universally to song that are sung without a crazy performance/ dance ritual
For a long time up until a couple years ago, i couldn’t tell the difference when artists lip syncing. There’s a video that shows when an artist lip sync by the movement of their throat.
I suddenly remembered this incident that happened in Japan. The russian duo Tatu always lip sync. That was also a career ending controversy for them. Anyway, Tatu didn't realize that lip syncing is illegal in Japan, so they go on this show, then panic and REFUSE TO LEAVE THEIR DRESSING ROOM! The hosts were panicking as they had 4-5 minutes of fead air to fill and didn't know what to do. In the end, a rock band that was also on the show that day decided to play an extra song live. It was freaking awesome. Every year that show does and end-of-the-year countdown of the best moments in the history of the show, and that one is always near the top of the list.
I absolutely love your channel. Every single one of your videos. Please never stop! You have a craft. Someone needs to pay you to move this to national television. You are great! Big fan of your channel.
I wish Kpop moved from being so choreography heavy ESP when the camera is focused on these new damn Fairy angles, bc you end up not even being able to see these complex moves anyway! It’s so annoying. I def agree that debut music shows and award shows probably should be lip synced but I miss live vocals.
Great video!!! but in my opinion I would be disappointed in paying so much money just to see an artist I like lip sync it would honestly not really be worth it. However, on the other hand I've come to accept it because shows can be physically demanding, and I guess they wouldn't want to embarrass themselves!
About the Kpop part I want to add that some groups do sing live at every stage they perform on (Rocket Punch, H1-Key, Nmixx, STAYC & many more) that’s the reason why some groups never get mentioned in this topic because the general public and the fans know that these groups have their mic on at every stage. I recommend to check out some videos on UA-cam where they do recaps of performances each month and you can clearly tell who sings live and lipsyncs. It is indeed very hard to sing live and dance heavily but some groups are doing perfectly fine :)
I’m glad you went into Milli Vanilli from *both sides*. I truly believe they were talented boys. They were so young, and they were promised the world. Esp back then, who didn’t want to be famous? They were taken advantage of, imho. Oddly, I’m not so forgiving with JLo, either. She’s a snake about it. Milli Vanilli were victims who wanted to sing (and dance). I think Ashlee Simpson shot herself in the foot. She (and the press) made it a bigger deal than it needed to be. It was like they were operating on the whole “there’s no such thing as bad press,” and they used noise marketing that did not work. How many excuses did she make?
Very nice pointers! Its funny though that While Mariah is known to lipping ALOT almost all the clips you were using of her were 100% LIVE :D Also in the case of Mariah its because her voice is really fragile with nodules and the stage fright and her inconcistence and also her very very very hard songs make her even more prone to use lipping. In her defence though.... She never use studio vocals and most of the time she just pre record new vocals each time she make a new performance... like for example the high parts of we belong together its 90% of the time different vocals and never the studio ones. this prove that she can do them but because of the condition of her voice, her stage fright and the difficulty of her songs, she doesn't want to risk it live. Its not good excuse but at least she work hard enough to give something new everytime.
SNSD was caught fully lip syncing on one of their ‘Way to Go’ performances. The recording kept skipping on Jessica’s part. She went on a variety show & explained there was audio issues so the group planned to lip sync
same happened on the iconic thunderstorm rain version of Oh!. The lightning was strong as F and girls had to do lipsync of the entire performance... they looked amazing either way
I really love and miss the art of live singing. The real deal gospel and soul sangers do it no matter the weather, no matter if they are sick, no matter how long they’re gonna have to sing. They have the stamina and ability to do it. The Grammys use to have the rule that you had to sing live. Now just a couple decades later the music industry is so different live singing is no more.
Anyone that thinks Beyoncé doesn’t lip sync whilst jumping, doing choreography , running , headbanging…please…and she’s never out of breath?? Lady gaga does all of that but you can hear she’s out of breath because it’s normal but people will be QUICK to comment on this. Lmaoo please.
As a solo artist she doesn't really, at least for the vast majority of her live performances. She trained all her life, so it's not surprising. Plus, she uses her voice very carefully. During more intensive dancing she doesn't sing but either lets her background vocalists sing or lets vocals from the track play in the background (see early Crazy in Love performances where she dances during the bridge).
Her fans will tell you it’s because her daddy made her rehearse in heels. Meanwhile, real life athletes who train every single day are still out of breath at times. But no, Beyonce is 100% perfect because she’s been dancing in heels since she was a fetus😂
If the artist is giving an amazing performance with outstanding choreography or instruments, I don’t see why it’s such a big deal. Did you even watch the video?
I don't mind lipsyncing from performers, i'm going to a performance for the show, the stage, the dance moves, and honestly i mostly don't like changes for live performances of songs, it somehow ruins it for me. But if you're a singer, not a performer, and all you're doing is standing or sitting, then you GOTTA give me the true thing, i don't care about background vocals as long as they're not the thing i'm hearing for mayority of the show.
Wow, I just knew Ashlee Simpson was gonna be mentioned. That incident completely ruined her career, so unfortunate. I really liked her music back then.
can you imagine? working your butt of to become a K-pop star but never being allowed to actually sing live? That must suck. Also, how many artists these days can actually sing live? They often use autotune or something, but really cannot sing at all! So yeah, MTV might've been to harsh on them.
As a classical and opera singer - I have a slightly different take: a) singing outside is hellish - especially in cold weather (see Mariah comments - she’s a goddess in my eyes) and stadium performances b) singing inside *without* an audience/fans etc is v different from with an audience- pop concerts more so - temperature/humidity/air-conditioning - all play a huge factor c) scheduling - as touched on here - soloists (in opera) have performances very spaced out - they do not do huge tours or residencies (residencies are great as there is far more control for a vocalist) - I cannot imagine what it must be like for Mariah Celine etc who are known for their *voice* rather than say Madonna (more for performance)
Trying to actually sing and dance at the same time is difficult. Honestly it’s not a big deal when artists lip sync during a dance performance bc it’ll go more smoothly. I don’t think artists should lip sync on every performance.
Bout time someone made this. Britney has been dragged since day one yet for her first five tours she sang a lot more parts live then Beyonce has ever done in her solo career. They're both icons but I'm tired of the hive making it out that Britney has never sung once while dancing. It's hard to judge shows post 2008 cause of how little control she had. Britney has always outdanced her competition and tried her best to sing live. It's also clear by the stems from Glory, hold me closer and the several surprise live covers that her voice hasn't degraded. It's probably hard to do the baby voice for 90 minutes while dancing, she can definitely do the voice but she's much more comfortable with it in the studio.
I really hate the mentality "real artist don't lip sync or use auto tune!!!" It's like dude, almost every single artist ever, has done both, many times. There are many reasons, and it usually not because the person isn't a good singer.
Tbh. I cant stand lip sync with life performances. Cause i like artists first for their songs. And wanna hear real vocals when person doing live performance. Because whats the point of going on someone's concert or watching life performance it it has the same vocals and mood we heard already, but just with real dancing this time around. Even if singing is not looking good or doesnt sounds perfect on live, i still can find it more compelling because theres a lot more emotions then on album version
I don’t mind the backing track when is necessary, and even in rock performers o artist who uses live band using lip sync on those instruments, at the end of the day artist do that to bring a better show. What I don’t agree is some fans excusing the lip sync of their favorites artist because they are dancing, like excuse me but selena gomez beyonce or britney lips syncs not because they are dancing, they do because they don’t have the vocal hability to sound like their tracks and the correct breath control. there’s a lot of artist specially on R&B who sings and dance live so no excuse, just some artist had the talent and others not.
while its nice to use pre recorded vocals to be able to put more energy into the performance + have a more polished sound, i hate the way (in kpop at least) they've started to excessively autotune the vocals so they dont even sound like the human voice anymore
I actually prefer lip syncing - as long as the singer is doing it to their own prerecorded vocals. I don’t think there should be any shame surrounding it. I grew up on shows like ‘top of the pops’ where it was the standard. artists also do it in their music videos.. I simply don’t enjoy live music. it’s often loud and messy. I don’t want to hear my favourite songs ruined. once something is recorded, you never have to sing it again. perfection was already achieved. I’ll gladly watch an entire show of my favourite artists lip syncing my favourite songs. doing so would allow them to focus on the more visual side of the performance, and be more energetic. it’s an added element that you don’t get from just listening to the music.
When to a Jane Jackson in the early 90s she sang along to the prerecorded music no one cared because of the fantastic dancing costumes, set decorating ,and high energy and all of us just sang danced and had a fantastic time.
How on earth did J Lo think she could use BRANDY’s vocals and no one would know???
Right… they don’t sound anything alike either 😭
Wait what? When?
Brandy & J-lo don't sound anywhere near similar. Huhhhhh...??
Can’t stand That fraud
Not defies all laws of physics lmaoooo. And truly I see no problem w pre-recorded vocals and a good show/ choreography which seems to be her MO

Exactly! There are so many reasons for it other than reducing it to “this person can’t sing”
Imagine doing 100+ with sometimes one performance after the another one completely live. Destruction. It happened to Adele not once but twice.
I don’t care if your lip synching to your own voice but if your lip synching to other peoples vocals and taking credit for it like it’s your voice you deserve to be held accountable. You are profiting off of other peoples work. I can see why Milli Vanilli was cancelled.
That part!!
@jenniferlopez
I agree but I feel so bad for them because they could actually sing and they were taken advantage of but they got most of all the backlash and not the slimy company
Wow that embarrassing 🤦
Exactly, if you lipsynch to your own voice then I am fine with that.
Some artists (BRANDY or Jazmine Sullivan ) and often times a lot of Gospel artists who are trained in live performances get a reverse reaction where people prefer their live vocals to their studio versions of songs
That’s me with Whitney Houston and Beyoncé their lives vocals are so much better than the recorded ones
I always thought that about those two as well as YEBBA it’s like the track is too “clean and perfect” we need some emotion
Yes. And the Philippines is full of singers who sound better during their live performances.
@@crab2195 poor thing 😢 I wonder if there’s any that she can do to help fix it. One more Britney album with her authentic voice would be amazing!!!!

I can understand lip syncing sometimes. To catch a breath from dancing and performing like Beyoncé, or on tour like Abel and losing your voice, or on thick plat form heels like Ariana Grande. However, to lip syncing the entire song just loses the statement as a vocalist.
Wow u just mentioned my 3 favorite artist who I know can sing..

Yes, but atleast lipsyncing to pre-recorded with live band version, not the studio version. Lazy af🤡
Aespa don't have intense or hard choreography tho so your point is kinda invalid
@A you mispelled JYP
😆
Yes.
I'm not sure if it's actually a proper analogy though. People pay premium $ to see a "live" performance.

If an artist is lip syncing I don’t have a problem if they can actually SING. I do however have a problem with them lip syncing while delivering a below average performance. Everyone has off days but don’t forget the main focus is your ability to sing.
Exactly, neither do I.
I’m glad you included Aespa in this, SM really doesn’t do them justice. It’s kinda sad actually, they’ve proven that they can sing live, but their management doesn’t let them, which ended up hurting their stage presence and making them one of the most hated groups in recent kpop :(
i agree
People would have hated them for something else even if they sang live. AESPA can't win.

Imagine going to the gym for 2 hours but not being able to take breaks in between
Thank you📌
I think the thing with K-Pop acts is that if you build a career off lip synching and just dancing through the whole thing, you never actually get better at singing live. That's historically how acts who can actually perform live got to their level...by actually doing it. I think Britney Spears is a good example of that. With Britney she only had to sing live every once in awhile so vocally she never evolved. Christina is a naturally better singer, but she went on world tours singing live as much as possible and it shows.
exactly 😭 alit of these kpop stan’s don’t get it. they’ll never learn how to sing live if they keep on lipsyncing
Exactly, Britneys voice is extremely damaged too.
😂😂😂😂😂
@onedayatatime1494 you've obviously never heard her real voice and octave.
it's important to understand that different performances can have different priorities. some of them meant to provide full visual and musical stimulation so lipsyncing or at least a back track is a must. others focus on live vocals so artists usually would be sitting or standing. dancing WHILE singing is not a thing
That’s a good point. There’s not meant to be any creativity/ variation in the vocals anyways
If you literally train yourself to do that it shouldn't be hard. As a singer they should expect this stuff to happen.
Don't forget his lupus it was affecting his breath control when he was getting older.
@@Mjjhistoryarchives BAD and The Way You Make Me Feel weren't really apart of the tour tho. Only were on a few shows. The full setlist was 50%.
If I were her I would have been so frustrated
I always felt like Milli Vanilli were thrown under the bus. They were neither the first, the last, nor the only act to lip sync and get caught.
That’s different, the vocals didn’t belong to either of them.
Thank you! And I don’t see much wrong with it, moreso the fact of being dishonest w fans about the sort of performance they’re getting
@@naomi.cannibal thats just the way of the world, never ending and man you're the best I didn't think youll reply this quick🥺 thought am late or some'
When I first discovered channel I was like “another documentary channel 🙄” but baby!!! You shut my mouth! This episode is everything especially when you get to the broadway! The research!’ The research!!!!
Thank you and I apologize.
Lmaoooo!!! Thank u for giving it a chance
Great video as always! 💜 I also think another good point is that lip syncing or singing over pre recorded vocals can be fun for artists, like how it’s fun to sing along while you listen to music or how it’s fun to lip sync for TikTok’s & stuff.
The audio on your vids has gotten better. I love watching ur content and love to see how u r honing ur craft! Keep it up.
Very kind of you- thanks! 💕
You're literally adorable. You spoke truth, as well as speaking both side of the narriative.
And that's on show business💫
Yet another incredible video👏🏽
♥️♥️♥️
Same sis I rather hear a studio lip sync with some good ass dance moves and then seeing the energy and effort in the choreography from the artist then to sit and watch them stand and just sound like Fergie singing the National anthem lol. That’s why i love Britney’s little “woo’s” when she’s performing live lmao 🤣 btw love your video content❤
Thank you 💕
Also when Drew Seeley was the ghost singer for Zack Efron in HSM 1. I was so confused during their musical run ahahaha
How did I not mention this omgggggg
Thank u for this thorough video 🥰
thank uuuu ✨
Lady Gaga lipsynced her Super bowl ? Im pretty sure she hasn't in both national anthem and halftime because there are mic feeds for both performances online. I could be wrong though idk
no, she definitely didn't and it is quite obvious imo. i'm glad u mentioned it bc when i saw the pic of gaga's superbowl i was like ????
I actually think Naomi meant Lady Gaga DID NOT lip sync cause she shows her saying "very few artists sung live at the SB". 🤔🤔🤔
Seems like she took Gaga as one of the examples of SB live singers.
@@flazeda8743 yes, this is what I meant!
@@naomi.cannibal I knew it haha! ;)
Hmmm I’ll have to look into those vids, because sometimes I still can’t tell, and can only tell when it sounds “too perfect” even if it’s pre recorded
Finally! Thank you! So many fans are ignorant to this fact in the industry.
Muuuuch appreciated!! It’ll come 💕
I wish Kpop moved from being so choreography heavy ESP when the camera is focused on these new damn Fairy angles, bc you end up not even being able to see these complex moves anyway! It’s so annoying. I def agree that debut music shows and award shows probably should be lip synced but I miss live vocals.
Yeah sometimes it’s frustrating that you have to actively search/ seek out for live vocals for a lot of idols to see how they really sound
Love your vids!
Thank you 🫶🏾🫶🏾
Great video with thoughtful takes.
MAMAMOO is one of the few kpop groups that can deliver a really good performance while singing live.
My favorite gg in the kpop industry and they're coming this month on Oct 11th 🔥🔥🔥
Heavy on STAYC!!! I’m impressed every time I see their live stages. I hope I can see them in concert soon bc they’re one of my 4th gen ults
@@naomi.cannibal have fun at the concert! They’ll definitely impress you with their vocals especially Yoon!
The lightning was strong as F and girls had to do lipsync of the entire performance... they looked amazing either way
Imagine stealing vocals on a song called I’m Real- the jokes write themselves 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I don't really care if singer lip sync as long as they put up a show
I really love and miss the art of live singing.
Britney does lip sync, but doesn't hide it and be secretive like OTHER singers.
This is why Jazz music is THE only music genre that's still worth going to live concerts for
If the artist is giving an amazing performance with outstanding choreography or instruments, I don’t see why it’s such a big deal.
So did I.
Same here. I still listen to her songs now and again when im feeling nostalgic
can you imagine? working your butt of to become a K-pop star but never being allowed to actually sing live? That must suck.
Also, how many artists these days can actually sing live? They often use autotune or something, but really cannot sing at all! So yeah, MTV might've been to harsh on them.
As a classical and opera singer - I have a slightly different take:
a) singing outside is hellish - especially in cold weather (see Mariah comments - she’s a goddess in my eyes) and stadium performances
b) singing inside *without* an audience/fans etc is v different from with an audience- pop concerts more so - temperature/humidity/air-conditioning - all play a huge factor
c) scheduling - as touched on here - soloists (in opera) have performances very spaced out - they do not do huge tours or residencies (residencies are great as there is far more control for a vocalist) - I cannot imagine what it must be like for Mariah Celine etc who are known for their *voice* rather than say Madonna (more for performance)
Trying to actually sing and dance at the same time is difficult. Honestly it’s not a big deal when artists lip sync during a dance performance bc it’ll go more smoothly. I don’t think artists should lip sync on every performance.
Yeah a balance between the two is important

Great work! Love your video essays
Thank you!!
I really hate the mentality "real artist don't lip sync or use auto tune!!!"
It's like dude, almost every single artist ever, has done both, many times. There are many reasons, and it usually not because the person isn't a good singer.
My dad used to always say someone or something was “faker than milli vanilli” and Chile I never knew what he was talking about lmao
Lmaooo that’s a funny one
Thank you sharing. A lot of these things are industry standard stuff done for various reasons as you've stated in your video
while its nice to use pre recorded vocals to be able to put more energy into the performance + have a more polished sound, i hate the way (in kpop at least) they've started to excessively autotune the vocals so they dont even sound like the human voice anymore
I don’t like lip syncing when tickets are an insane price.
BTS sing live, they use a a track for backing vocals during difficult choreogaphy. Their voices are perfection, check their Tiny Desk performance.
Not all time tho. It's not realistic for vocals to be ready all time
i feel like you didn’t watch the video
wow you're videos are so in depth and well researched!
thank you for making these and talking on issues in the industry with such eloquence 😊
Thank you so much!!
