Bangerz was definitely a statement era, the way PTA moms was trying to get her up outta here for standing on a moving platform with a pole on it, literally calling a 16 yr old girl a stripper and a slut was insane 😭 this is why I have a lot of empathy for child stars bc once they start growing up and start acting their age ppl try to tell them they’re wrong bc they didn’t age up the “right way”, and then ppl wonder why they have an identity crisis and go off the rails, and then with Miley in particular ppl were especially hostile basically calling her a prostitute and tried the guise that as feminist, I think the cultural appropriation was the most unserious thing about this era which is why I didn’t particularly like it, but I can see in retrospect how this was regarded as the era of all eras

Also she recently apologized to Sinead but still said she doesnt regret anything about expresing her sexuality cause thats what she was feeling at the moment, she made the decision not others, sometimes she may have gone too far to affect her image but she was 20 after all, living her youth and now is in a different place

I remember when all this happened when I was about to start my sophomore year in high school gosh the drama, the controversy, the appropriation it was everything 2013. In retrospect I can split on the fact that some of the backlash Miley got was ridiculous and rooted in sexism bc she was not conforming to a specific type of femininity and making a “respectable way” of transitioning into adulthood but the other backlash it deserved for her cultural appropriation especially when the black hip hop influences were used for the shock value promo and barely there in the album and then when she stripped that down and said she was bored of it like … yeah it’s hard to take her seriously after that I still love plastic hearts and like a few songs off of endless summer vacation. In fact this situation back in 2013 helped me lean into the topics of cultural appropriation alongside Taylor swift twerking references in the shake it up video and Kardashians cosplaying into black womanhood aesthetics
The album as a whole was a hit and miss there are some songs that are good/great and there are other songs that age like milk. I feel Miley is more better as a single artist than a album artist

I feel like this album/era's influence is often understated these days.... Album eras have always been a thing since at least Madonna, but I'd argue this was one of the core albums of the 2010s to solidify the concept of eras as a cultural "moment" with very distinct visuals, sound, etc. for every single album - you can look at a picture of miley and know exactly what year it was taken in and what song(s) she was promoting, which I think has become much more common and defined after Bangerz (look at Dua, Halsey, Taylor especially from 1989 on, Billie, etc). Again this has always been a thing, and I think artists like Gaga and Rihanna especially helped contribute to it as well, but if you were to ask someone for pop albums they think of as complete MOMENTS wholly in and of themselves, Bangerz is probably going to come up a lot. I also think Miley helped pave the way for young pop girls to be this type of sexually explicit without as much backlash - people loved to call Halsey a Lana ripoff back in the day but (as someone who has been a fan of halsey since before her debut album even dropped) I would argue she owes just as much if not more to Miley, at least visually. I also don't know if Ariana's transition from teen idol to pop sex symbol would've gone as well for her if Miley hadn't just done the same thing but a lot messier lol. All that said, even though I like a lot of the songs and sympathize with Miley for all the backlash she received, this album has always left kind of a bad taste in my mouth for how it rode in so hard on hip hop/Black culture, to the point people credit Miley with things she was copying, and then she completely dropped all that once she got bored of it. I don't want to say this was never "authentically" her because I don't know her, but it does make me question to what extent she actually really loves/loved hip hop culture and all that, & how much of it was just her running from her disney image

she collaborated and shared that platform with many black artists and never claimed to invent any of that, actually when they started saying she invented twerking she was the one saying it was obviously not the case and explained were it came from and how her dancers influenced her, she also gave a platform to many disabled, queer and poc back when it was something still seen as uncool and could "ruin your career" so I don't really understand why ppl think that, she never claimed rock or country but has been influenced by that too but that was never an issue yet we keep ppl in the industry who have actually been racist or dated them sooooo

@@miguelstarboy5572Here goes the white person speaking on cultural appropriation.
Rock and country are white genres. They originated in black communities but were taken over by white people. Which is an entirely different conversation, but that’s why no one cared when she was inspired by them. She belonged there.
She had never shown interest in hip hop/trap up until she wanted to be rebellious. That’s the problem. Hiphop is synonymous with white people wanting to “be bad” or wanting to rebel against whatever they’re trying to rebel against. When they’re done, they move on and go back to what they were listening to before. She hasn’t done hiphop/trap since, and probably never will again. Why? Because she doesn’t actually care for those genres for herself. Which is fine, but that’s why it’s cultural appropriation.
It doesn’t matter that she didn’t claim to invent anything or share a platform with black artists. It was still cultural appropriation.

She also did outwardly state that she disliked hip hop afterwards and that it had little substance after the Bangerz era. That was my issue with her, how are you going to profit off of stereotyping black people and literally discard the aesthetic and genre to say you’re going “back to your roots”

Seeing this era in concert was CRAZY the set and all the visuals. I must’ve been a junior in hs, I didn’t know how iconic it would be. I never listen to any of the songs now but I remember loving Rooting for my Baby and GetItRight and I still think they are some of Miley’s underrated songs. I wonder if it has any replay value to others. It’s also kinda crazy how the title track had Brittany and they didn’t choose it as a third single.
It’s interesting that Miley seems to regret most of her eras or doesn’t revisit them. I grew up watching Hannah/miley and have a soft spot for her but yeah the use of blackccent and twerking was….a choice 😶 I love the Kenya mention she’s one of my favorite creators.

I loved this era and still to this day I get emotional thinking about her Bangerz tour. Nobody vibed with her back then, everyone called her ugly and disgusting - she wasn't catering to ANYBODY but herself and who showed up in her audience? Girls.❤
I admired how she expressed herself and her sexuality WITHOUT catering to men, she did what SHE wanted to do, whay SHE found hot even though it turned people away from her. She kept everything genuine to who she eas and didn't shy away from her impulses or desires, she took up space even though people demanded that she'd reduce herself. I admire shit like that.

I was only 14 when the Bangerz era happened and I like many others my age was shocked especially at the VMAs performance which imo will be the last memorable one.Looking back now,I realized the era was imtentional and Cant be tamed was just the starting point of her leaving her Disney image and for good reasons. The media judged her too harshly as a teenager and I can understand this era as her saying f you to people expecting her to stay squeaky clean. But I also understand the backlash like the cultural appropriation and how she used her privilege as a white woman to get in and out of the hiphop scene and also lash out at Sinead O Connor who was just being truthful as an idol to her aboit the industry and its nice to see Miley Cyrus acknowledge that and acknowledge her privilege when it came to incorporating black culture but also not feeling sorry for things that she didnt deserve to be hated on as a kid.Overall Bangerz was like a wild ride of a album rollout in a time of the 2010s that would change pop music and culture.

To me despite her having amazing vocals she never fully realized her potential, however the bangerz tour is one of the best tours in recent pop memory imo. I’ve watched it back after years of forgetting abt it and i was so overwhelmed by the amount of color and chaos on the stage. If you wanna talk about diversity, she had dancers from the smallest to the biggest size, even including dwarf and so many different types of people. Insane stage set up, a huge inflated statue of her dog, a flying wiener (fr). Everyone seemed to have the best time on stage and miley had sm charisma, it truly doesn’t get boring for one second.. i just hope more artists would do such fun and colorful tours that just felt like a massive rave. I also heard miley funded the tour on her own and you can tell a lot of money and dedication went into it. Honestly watching this tour while stoned is a blast i highly recommend it

    Unpopular opinion •
Miley Cyrus used black culture to “shed her good girl image” and “make an impact on pop music” just to turn around 2 years later and claim that “Nicki Minaj isn’t a polite person.” Alluding that Nicki is difficult to work with. Even though it could be argued that Miley was in fact just trying to immolate the likes of a Nicki Minaj during her Bangerz era.

In my opinion Miley has always been rock pop. From cant be tamed to her self titled album Miley Cyrus. Even in the song we cant stop what made it so iconic was the blend between this love child of hip hop and rock. That era was such a subversion from her pop roots and a clear departure from her previous reputation. Miley music and style now seems like a natural result of her evolution as an artist. She has both the signature blond and brown and her records definite leave an impression of all those sounds. She definitely paved a way for women in pop to be expressive and break out of the typical pop mold.

Miley Cyrus played heavily into the over-sexualization, objectification and "come seat on my junk" aspect of hip hop culture to get a rise from the public and distance herself from the girl next door Disney image. It seems she was a rich white girl that dabbled into the most surface level parts of hip hop culture as a means of young adult rebellion. Besides that I do love Wrecking Ball and this video made me want to listen to the album.
