I'm glad these have come back. Your insight has been invaluable to me as a working dad of 4 looking to make the most I can out of this sport. Thank you for taking the time to talk candidly with people like this.
I'd love a podcast version of this that's longer than just making breakfast. I lov by our views on things and how you express yourself. Looking forward for more
I disagree with number one as a priority. Gav Bilton and Andy Black leaped onto the scene really quickly once they picked up Strongman. Within 3 years, they were jumping at the chance for WSM or international shows. That's a few long peaks worth of time. I'd say genetics and smart PED use preceed training age. Some people grew up clumsy or a non-athlete, so their ceiling and rate of progression in coordination and weight will be slower than a natural athlete. I'd go: 1. Genetics 2. PED's 3. Work Ethic 4. Having a "Strongman" mentality in terms of being able to adapt to events and not get flustered when the movement pattern isn't perfect. 5. Frame. Wide shoulders and tall height works well all-around. Things like torso length, femur length, and arm length all help and hurt different events, so that's optional, but being Hafthor is a lot easier than being Novikov if we're talking strength potential. 6. Opportunity and geolocation. If you're in South Africa or Romania, you're not getting opportunities like athletes in the US or UK. Also, for you to get to World's (technically), you have to win a national strongest man show and/or OSG to get to a Giant's Live, which gets you to WSM, and then ASC and Shaw will see you as a serious athlete, and now you can guarantee a shot at all 4 major shows. Otherwise, you won't get the world-level spotlight. As a weight-class athlete, OSG is the major thing and that only.
Kevin Faires is indeed just as tall as you are. Both of you are my height, as proven by my photos with you guys. I even had the same clothes both times and Kevin was also wearing a hat.
I love the "Breakfast with Bobby" series. It deserves a lot of views. Keep it up; it will eventually explode in popularity.
