Carmilla is what led to my descent into gothic novels and I’m so glad it did because I’ve been loving this genre! Also I have that version of Frankenstein and just started reading it!
I loved gothic even before I knew what ot was. My brother gave me Poes collected storied as a kid for christmas and he is now one of my favourite authors.🖤
Hi! I write in the Southern Gothic and absolutely love reading across the Gothic. I just want to say it's so exciting to see so many people getting into the genre!
I just pre-ordered the Collector's Limited Edition of A Study in Drowning and can't wait to get it! Releases Nov 5th. It is absolutely stunning and was only $18!
Oh my goodness I love your outfit for this video 😍I've been wanting to read a lot these books and watching this video has convinced me! Fall of the House of Usher was really good. Not necessarily my favorite show, but I enjoyed. I really need to read the book it was loosely based on.
@@StephMorgan_ It wasn't as phenomenal as the other shows, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. But also love finding something "horror related" that isn't cheesy 😅
Thank you! I love gothic reads as well. They are a delightfully decadent way to get through a cold, Canadian winter. I appreciated the section on modern gothic as there were a few that were new to me. And for anyone who hasn't read "Rebecca"; what are you waiting for?
New to your channel and this is a great list!! Checking out Gormenghast and The Bloody Chamber ASAP. I’m not sure if you’ve read it, but I highly recommend What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher! It’s a very unique take on The Fall of the House of Usher, and Kingfisher is known for her blend of horror and witty humor. I also just finished The Third Wife of Faraday House and though it’s not the best thing I’ve ever read, it’s a fun spooky time! And I’m so glad you mentioned House of Salt and Sorrows bc my hold from the library just came in, it’s gloomy and rainy where I am atm, so it literally cannot be any more perfect 🌧️👻
I hope you enjoy them! Gormenghast is such a forgotten gem, and the Bloody Chamber is stunning. I love What Moves the Dead! I should have added it to this list! Completely agree, its such a delightful and spooky twist to the original story. I haven't heard of The Third Wife of Faraday House though, I'll check it out! omg, have fun with House of Salt and Sorrows!! 👻
Oh thank heavens, I've already read most of these, and of the ones I haven't read, most are already on my library holds list. I say that because recently I watched a gothic recs video, and my TBR ended up 9 books longer! It's funny that you say you didn't realize you were a gothic fan. I was the same: I saw a list of 50 classic horror books, and I'd already read about 40 of them, which made me realize I'm a horror fan! Not only of gothic, but I do love the atmospheric spooky vibe of gothic. I love Rebecca! I've become quite the Du Maurier fan. If you haven't read it, I think My Cousin Rachel is even better, though I'm not sure it could be classified as gothic. Just yesterday I finished "All the Dead Lie Down" -- and it was FANTASTIC! Uncle Silas is another novel by Sheridan Le Fanu, very gothic as well.
I love horror too! It's funny to notice what you find yourself gravitating to over time. oh yes, I'm a die-hard Du Maurier fan! My Cousin Rachel is a slightly different vibe but still excellent. I think I've read all her books except for a few of the short stories. What a stunning cover for All the Dead Lie Down! I'm going to read it asap. Uncle Silas has been on my list for way too long, I need to get to it. Thanks for the recommendations! ☺
@@StephMorgan_ As much as I love Rebecca, I do think the twist ending is a little too convenient. The ending g to MCR felt more natural, and I love that my sisters and I all disagreed who was the “bad guy” in that novel. There are also a lot of really interesting parallels between the characters of Rebecca and Rachel. The other two I’ve read so far are Frenchman’s Creek and Jamaica Inn. One thing all of them have in common is women who embrace their own sexuality, contemporary mores be damned. I am not normally really thinky about my reading, but Du Maurier always gives me a lot to chew on!
She is SLAYING I fear!! I have my GR ready because I trust your Gothic recommendations more than anyone else 16:24 👀👂🪑 Rouge yesss Okay I will read Rebecca this year!!! 🙏✋🤚
Hum, excuse me - that edition of Wuthering Heights is GOR-GEOUS (that blouse too, by the way) A Study in Drowning is on my list - I have a pre-order for a special edition 😇
The edition is by Penguin! The blouse is Sézane! 😅 They periodically have great "haunting from a past century" tops lol Oh man, theres some really lovely Study in Drowning editions. Hope you show it in a video!
I LOVE Gothic Fic! I'm on a big Gothic kick right now. Reading a bunch this month and last, but in regards to this list, recently finished Jane Eyre and loved it! One of the books I'm reading now is a witchy Jane Eyre retelling, Salt and Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher.. will finish today.. so good! Also reading The Picture of Dorian Gray.. audiobook narrated by Ben Barnes who played him in the movie.. should finish today or tomorrow. Next physical read is a Gothic Fic published this year, The Shadow Key . sorry forgot the author.. but it sounds creepy and mysterious... can't wait!
thats amazing! I'm going to check out some of these books you mentioned, they are almost all new to me 😍 I had no idea ben barnes narrates dorian grey but I think I might need that in my ear holes asap 😂
what are your favourite gothic books? 🥀
I read a recently published Gothic Fic called The Secrets of Hartwood Hall.. it's a fun creepy and mysterious one as well.
@@the_eerie_faerie_tales adding to my TBR!!
I loved the Djinn Waits a Hundred Years-- a Gothic set in South Africa.
@@Emelia39 this sounds fantastic! added to my TBR ☺
While it's a bit more on the drama side than spooky, I really liked The Beguiled.
Carmilla is what led to my descent into gothic novels and I’m so glad it did because I’ve been loving this genre!
Also I have that version of Frankenstein and just started reading it!
I just ordered this for myself (I’m going to read it for a Halloweeny reading vlog) but I didn’t know it was inspiration for Dracula?!
