As an animation fan, it feels real bad. The "Live Action" animation somehow seems to intentionally avoid the magic of animation, when it absolutely doesn't have to.
Just go look at the old Narnia CG and compare it to the Lion King CG movies. Aslan just looks so much more compelling and spirited.

It's just to save money and "avoid controversy" by shutting people out. Like when they used the MeToo movement to shut down criticism of removing Mulan's male love interest because he thought she was a man when they first met. Actually a lot of this BS was shown in Mulan: we'll remove singing and talking dragons because it's a "realistic" movie, but add a WITCH WHO TURNS INTO BIRDS (and like Chinese-Canadian youtuber Xiran pointed out, that's a WESTERN WITCH so they made their realistic movie less culturally appropriate too!). Disney will avoid casting little people as much as possible because that would make it harder to silence the community.

Maybe they adopted some or all of the kids, idk. Either way, there being a mother in the house would totally explain why they all let a teenage girl live with them. At least it would be a better explanation than what was given in the original Disney cartoon, which can basically be summed up as, "it's impossible for men to know how to cook and clean even though they've been living by themselves for decades".

Your mentioning of older media featuring little people made me realise that, as a kid growing up in the 80's/90's, TV and movies were _full_ of little people. Granted, the representation wasn't always great, but there were plenty of high profile appearances in cinema (Billy Barty, Kenny Baker, Warwick Davis, etc.), whereas nowadays it feels like it's just Peter Dinklage who is able to get work despite films like Mirror Mirror showcasing talented actors.

The fact that the dwarves aren't interchangeable clones of each other WAS GROUNDBREAKING. Youre taking a major change in the concept of visual storytelling and complaining just to find an excuse to complain.

The Dwarves weren't 1 dimensional in the film. They were designed that way to appeal to the child audience but also be fun in general. They were never meant to be super complex because the story of Snow White itself is simple. The point of the movie was to showcase that animation is a legit storytelling method with the ANIMATION AND MUSIC itself being the showcase.
On top of that, the dwarves leave more character in what small bits they do due to them writers knowing how to use theirr gimicks to express who they are. We got a lot of character from Doc and Grumpy being moral rivals due to how they bicker about how things are ran, considering that Grumpy challenge Doc who is SUPPOSED to be the leader of the group.

Just bringing this up because I'm not sure anyone else has. The dwarves in Snow White aren't little people they're DWARVES, magical beings, basically a type of fairy. They aren't disabled people, heck they technically aren't human. One could argue that little people shouldn't play them because they aren't the same thing. No one (to my knowledge) complained when the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies cast non-disabled actors as the dwarves and remember Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was one of the inspirations for Tolkien's dwarves, that's why they're miners, so why are people treating the Snow White dwarves as little people when they didn't with the LotR dwarves?
All that being said Disney SHOULD have cast little person actors or hell even non-disabled actors and I think the only reason they didn't is because they can pay voice actor less. One of the richest companies in the world and they're cutting corners.

I think that casting a latina as Snow White merits criticisms about the colour of *character's* skin. In the book, the fact that she is pale is seen as a mark of her great beauty. Latinas (and African-Americans, and Indian and South East Asian women, and probably a lot of other people) have been pressured to have pale skins to the point of using bleaching cream. And comparing pictures of Zegler in real life to her in the trailer for the movie, it's clear that the makeup department made a look a lot paler than she is. So that's not appropriate representation.
They could have kept her complexion and explained that "White" was her last name. Or just not explained it at all. So yeah, the problem is not that the actress is Latina, the problem is that doesn't get to look like herself in the movie.

She mentioned in an interview she tried to protest it and point out boricuas are all skin colors, but it was the 60s so it didn’t get far.
Bit of a reverse example, but I think the common thread is that Latinas are forced to fit a mold of what they should/shouldnt look like in Hollywood, rather than just present as they are

It isn't about feeling whether people should be there or not, but it's like would you cast a White person as Black Panther? That would be bonkers and just insulting. So Snow White because the character itself is literally described as having snow white skin (which IS possible in a fantasy made up movie where mirrors can talk because of magic) should technically yes, be played by a White person OR have a POC do whiteface to get the look right. It is literally in her name. We would NEVER in a million years expect any traditionally Black character to be played by a White person and we never should have ever done it in the past -- but that doesn't make it right to have this particular character be played by a POC specifically. It's not about "feelings" or being "inconvenienced", it is just about being true to the character as written. It was important enough for the author to actually make her skin color her name, so it's not right to just ignore that completely.

Because they see there community as a less oppressed class of individuals over other marginalized protected communities. so instead, they decided to cut corners to exclude them and to CGI. focusing on one sided point of view of an actor. like Peter dinklage, over the dwarfism community. excluding them in culture, like what they did with Willy Wonka, and now Snow White. It depends how much these fantasies are based on Norse and Germanic mythology. Originally, dwarves could be good or evil. In the Middle Ages however, dwarves started to be portrait as little human like creatures with predominantly negative connotation. The "Heinzelmännchen" are also dwarves, but aren't any longer called so, because they are helpful creatures.
American filmmakers often get dwarves wrong, because they completely ignore their culture of origin. Everybody thinking that dwarves are little humans and them living underground is offensive, has already shown their utter ignorance.
Dwarves are spirits that live underground. They are shapeshifters, more skillful in crafts than humans and wiser. They are also the investors of art. The four dwarves that carry the sky are still known today: Norôry = North, Suôri = South, Austri = East, and Vestri = West

I was thinking, maybe in my own take of Snow White, the 7 dwarves or people with Dwarfism could be part of a village, a community of various people with the same condition, or same fantasy race, whatever the crew of little people I'd work with would want. There could be a few families and the 7 are just the 6 who strongly befriend Snow White. They've been kicked out of the kingdom, and make a living by trading with travelers, perhaps with rare gems they find in the mine.
I'd probably have them be experts on dealing with some fantasy beasts like dragons or what not-- but Snow White can come in and handle the beast with peace and singing as well. The way they deal with the fantasy beasts can also tie into them killing the evil queen later after she poisons Snow White.
There's a village elder, a mom type character, maybe doc is the local doctor or whatever. The 7 can be whatever race, could play into the story, but maybe the kingdom has had travelers from around the world for generations, or that's just how things are. The prince character could've even been from the village, and that's why he trusted to help her out. They met once before while he was traveling into the city to trade, and kicked it off.
Could extract from the main personalities of the 7 from the original film and expand on those, or might make new characters. I do like Dopey and Grumpy, but the others are kind of... whatever. You can also have other fantasy creatures in that village, but the 7 are little people, or dwarves. Whichever the actors like. Could be a mix. Though I guess if it were a mix the fantasy dwarves could have elf ears and magic. I don't know.
An engineering person could be cool as part of the group. Making like a water wheel thing, stuff to take character local pests, and whatever else, really. They could be insecure about it, wanting to be seen, and all that.
Could also have one of the people dealing with being queer in this fantasy world along with the disability.

Two years ago at a Fan Expo, Martin Klebba confirmed that he is playing Grumpy in the movie, after rumours have been circulating for a while. Since then, the only mention I can see of him being in the movie was Klebba again confirming he's in the movie at Motor City Comic Con last summer.
Looking at IMDb he is only listed as being a technical advistor (which could be related to motion and performance capture) but it is important to note that IMDb is not an offifical source of casting information. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on how this news seems to be kinda forgotten in the conversation surrounding the movie both by Disney and everyone else.

4:44 --- No, its not weird. Their are miners. They work in a mine, and then return home. You can ask questions about why they are mining (to gather ore and raw gems, probably to sell them) and why they are living together. Why do they live in the woods and not a village? Because thats where the mine is located and because the infrastructure for a villiage wasnt established or would be too cumbersom for elderly to traverse. Remember, its the medieval-time'ish that we're talking about, building a villiage from scratch, in the middle of the woods, no fields, no water ways... isnt happening. I would guess, from the original setting, that the dwarves lived in that house temporarily for work, and returned home to their families every couple months. This is guesswork, of course, I might have studied history but I'm no expert on the Brothers Grimm.
5:12 --- You are correct: cast the best person for the role. Period. However, lets be honest here: if it was the story of a black princess in Africa and the studio would cast a white acress (because she was simply the best) ... we both know the world itself would explode. People have a certain picture in their mind regarding certain stories and roles; "Snow White" is a centuries-old story and people have preconceptions, thats natural. On one hand I believe the allout rejection of Zegler on basis of her ethnicity is childish; let me give an example: Orlando Bloom's first major role was Legolas, a white, blond, blue-eyed elf. And Bloom looks very different normally being latin American (I think). However, nobody cared. In the movie, he wore a wig and colored lenses, and post-production lighting as well as make-up made him look paler. Nobody cared. - But Disney didnt do this with Zegler: they made it a point to not make her look like what the audience would expect. Which makes me think (personal opinion) that Disney takes the skin-question much more serious than we might think. Otherwise, they would've done what Peter Jackson did with his Legolas-cast.
9:31 --- Hmmm... my impression was, from what I heard and from this longer quote, that Dinklage flamed not Disney as much he did his own community. It showed me on one hand his limited knowledge about the tale (they were miners and worked in caves, but lived in a house - which was actually tidy in the Grimm's original, I looked it up) as well as, as it seemed to me, disdain to having Dwarf roles. You are correct, of course: in many Hollywood productions, disabled people are usually props and not real characters. However... Dinklage didnt seem to really know himself. After all, we dont know what the movie might look like. I fear Dinklege jumped to conclusions there which prompted the negative reception.
17:36 --- I liked "Mirror, Mirror". A completely new version of the tale, and one that did it right, with a twist and loads of humor. Though, when I think of dwarfism, I usually think of the movie "Willow" (the original, mind). Whats your opinion about that one? I'm curious. The dwarves there might not be humans with disabled bodies, but a "race" in that fantasy universe, but still... You cant say, they werent real characters.
I think the sole problem was (in my opinion, of course), and this is leaning into your suspition with the branding from the beginning, that Disney didnt think of the Dwarves as characters. They focused solely on the story of Snow White, how she would become a leader, how she would defeat the Evil Queen, all on her own because (and yes, I'm leaning into the controversy here) they made Show White a "girl boss", who solves her problems on her own and doesnt need help, not from the dwarves, not from a prince. You see it in the trailer, where she commands the dwarves around to clean up their own house. I can see very, very well why that advisor from the dwarfism community told Disney to use CGI: she was right! This depiction of dwarves isnt was that community deserves, it isnt what the movie and we, the audience, deserve. And (in my opinion) it only proves that Disney took the easy way out: ignoring these characters existed and just used them as props. Which isnt what people wanted and hoped for. I think, every fan of the story would've loved if the dwarves would've been treated like real characters, with all the background you mentioned, which they deserve.

I first became aware of little people working in acting was watching the making of the original star wars movie. There were dwarves in all the droids and ewoks! As a kid a had no idea, now i want to see dwarves where the role is perfect, why not.

As POC, queer and neurodivergent, Dinklage's comments just made sense and echoes what I hear in those communities. So many big companies, especially Disney, loves marketing their progressive representation while being prejudiced towards other groups, and when those groups say, for example, "wait a minute, why does your cis gay male character make transphobic jokes?" they make it look like those people are whiny and hate representation. It's those things that show the companies aren't sincere at all. If you want to represent all people, then people of colour and little people are obviously equal. BOTH groups were treated as exotic spectacles in the past. Even by Disney itself.

You have to understand - None of these companies are sincere. Not the progressives nor the conservative. It's always, always, always a marketing ploy.
It's about making money. And if they have to pretend to care about the things you care about to get you to open your wallet, that's what they do. Once it stops working, they'll switch to a new thing and get money from those folks.

Yeah with the skin tone thing, her beauty is explicitly tied to how light skinned show white is. While I understand the desire to lean away from that aspect, this is another instance of taking a story that is inherently tied to old european values and beauty standards and trying to make it "progressive" and "feminist" without addressing the issues inherent in the original text. The original text is about a young girl that is abused by her parent for being too hot. Her attractiveness is presented as a virtue, right along with her sweetness and submissiveness and ability to do household labor. Her mother is a stereotype of older women and is shown in direct contrast to the youth and motherly characteristics of snow white.
She is punished for being too naive (the whole plot for her stepmom to kill her, not just once but several times with multiple gifts culminating in the apple), but in the end was too beautiful and sweet for the narrative to really kill her and thus is "rewarded" with a man who presumably will take her away to have his kids and keep his house. THIS IS NOT A PROGRESSIVE STORY AT ALL.
Every subsequent adaptation builds upon and makes the story more palatable for modern audiences, as is normal. But yeah, not ever addressing the issues in the source material and just glossing over it rubs me the wrong way honestly. The people working on the film, including actors and writers, may sincerely care about messaging and inclusiveness but the company who ultimately gives marching orders will happily throw them and all their values under the bus if they see that being the path to more profit. This is the underlying problem with pretty much every Disney "live action" remakes, in my opinion.

    • @psychotophatcat
      @psychotophatcat 21 годину тому +3

Your first comment about her skin color equalling virtue made me picture a film in which Snow White is named such when she's born prematurely and perhaps is very sick, and when she gets well, her color begins to return. If the Queen is her mother or stepmother, perhaps the fact that her daughter isn't this paragon of ignorant beauty standards anymore, yet she is still loved and seen as the fairest of all, could be part of the catalyst for the Queen's jealousy and murder scheme. That would be an interesting and far more relevant approach to the story than just making Snow White a girlboss and pretending the paleness issue never existed.

    • @taylorallen1187
      @taylorallen1187 21 годину тому +1

@@psychotophatcat I agree, I think addressing how to address the colorism in the source material is beyond my scope of expertise but I do think that if you want to tell a story where the protagonist is a POC and simply exists in the world without discrimination, snow white is an odd choice for that. I love the 1997 adaptation of roger and hammerstien's cinderella. Not sure how POC communities view it, but I think that there is a place for bringing racial diversity to traditionally white characters without a narrative explanation, but snow white makes it awkward because the name itself denotes colorism.

Why does nobody ever mention Time Bandits? That movie was fun and fantastic. Dwarf was never even in the title. And if I remember, the bandits were never referred to as dwarves or even small of stature. They were all amazing and were cast perfectly. When I first started hearing about this whole Snow White controversy, I hoped that Disney would have hired the Time Bandits veterans and things would work out stellar. I can just picture "Kevin" as Dopey. Alas, they are all too old now or passed on.

I often say good things come out of Disney despite Disney.
It really is the artists and creators in the company that are pushing their global reach to tell meaningful stories. When left its own devices, Disney is a multi billion dollar monop- corporation that will go in whatever direction it thinks will lead its investors the greatest return, which is often the worst thing for art. It’s bad enough when it’s just art, but when that art is tied to real people, it becomes so much worse.
I would love to see more media with little people! I grew up loving Davis and Dinklage is a funny guy! But until corporations stop worrying about exponential profits and start caring about art again, it’s up to small time creators to make the things we want to see, and up to the rest of us to help share it

00:33 - What's wrong with non-disabled people voicing their opinions about this issue? Little people are voicing their opinion and this isn't about them, either. The 7 dwarves in Snow White are an actual fantasy race, unto themselves, not little people. The 7 dwarves aren't human beings with a condition that makes them develop the way they are, it's an entire race of people that are ALL exactly like that because that is how the race is. Just like no one is talking about Orlando Bloom playing and elf in LotR and taking away jobs from real elves. And Peter Dinklage is no spokesperson, because he's already cashed in on every role he could snag to make his millions.

Eh, for most characters, the colour of their skin really doesn't matter, but come one. This is snow white. Have you read the fairy tail? Her skin is supposed to be as white as snow. That's where her name comes from. So not only should they have casted a white person, they should have casted the palest white person they could find.
I wouldn't have cared about the remake either way, but it still shows how little these people respect the source material.
Honestly it's mistake to even make these fairy tale movies in the first place. A fairy Tale is way too short to faithfully adapt anyway, so why bother.

It did initially feel wrong to see little people be reduced to playing dwarves who are defined by a singular trait. I liked your perspective and perhaps it all comes down to the material. Little people can exist in a fantasy world but their characters must be written well. I imagine there is a lack of little people working behind this movie. It sounds like there was a lot of consultation but are any of the writers of the film little people? I feel like the animated Disney movie is antiquated and a reimagining could be interesting but their live action remakes have been so dull. Likely this new movie will be a paint by numbers of the old movie with one song about women empowerment.

In this particular case, where the character is named after her skin (the reason they shouldn't be making the film in 2024, Grimm's grandmother's tales were collected to "prove the superiority of the Germanic spirit").
Zegler seems lovely, and the US doesn't hire enough people of colour in their films (or represent their cultural diversity at all) but can you really not see how weird this particular case is?

You aren't making sense with this argument. If it's a magical world, of course she can have literally snow white skin, as she is described in the original story. hello! I want to ask some clarification:
if I get this right your suggestion is simply making magical dwarfs into fleshed out characters instead of one word personalities and fixing empty bg stories ect. would work?
if this is correct then I can definitely understand it, because otherwise the answer to any question about a character would be "because: dwarf"
otherwise I would assume it didn't really help because "the origin is still there" and causes discomfort
it's turning the caricature into a good character like any other takes the discomfort away, right? (like to you, ofcours, you don't speak for everyone I know)
just wanting to make sure I get it right, because I cannot fully wrap my head around how much magical dwarfs have impacted little people
but I understand, from my own experiences, that if a character gets to be actually a character... the traces of the caricature can be hard to ignore
but I always fear the worst knowing how terrible bullying gets so I wanted to be sure I got your rewriting suggestions correct ^_^

i remember hearing about the controversy and just... not hearing anything else on the snow white movie production for a while x,U i honestly didnt realize it hadnt come out yet. i agree extremely with the fact that fleshing out the characters and exploring their circumstances to a realistic extent would ground them so much, and disney turning away from that to keep them as a Magical Creature depiction to i assume "not break the magic" of the original film/its legacy was just a bad choice (after disney constantly making these types of bad choices for their films imo). it just feels so weird for them to continue pretending that "oh they arent little people, theyre magical dwarves! cartoony things! no semblance to real life people!" >_>
like im so not surprised by disney doing something like this (they will always do as much as possible to avoid trans or gay characters in their series and i could rant on and on about that as well), but am so glad u made this video because im really interested in the other productions of snow white that Do pick up the slack and give these characters And the actors portraying them a decent story and respect!

    Snow Whites a Fairytale.
Neither Snow White or The Dwarves who aren't human beings mind you.
Are not gonna have complex backstories.
That's a waste of time when you're trying to tell a fairytale.
An actual stories, yes. Characters have backstories.

You haven't even seen it.. Rachel got herself into trouble, AND without the OG snow white, animation as we know it would be different. And being latino in this role isn't a great choice even if just for her attitude on half the country.. I think your taking this film to seriously.. and they dropped the seven dwarfs from the title. Everything is too woke, and Disney is evil.... You obviously haven't listened to the masses, at least not a lot.... I don't see ppl as little, or whatever. But when you are casting for snow white... A Latino is definitely not what you think first. Same with the little mermaid, but mulan gets an actual Asian. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I feel like in this day and age, we are so paranoid of hurting people's feelings that it is honestly clouding the creativity of hollywood. There isn't anything wrong with casting little people! It's just a matter of writing and giving the characters personalities. Little people are still people and have personalities like anybody of average height, so I don't understand this song and dance of changing the dwarves to CGI for the sake of this film ._. Another thing, I personally find it odd to make Snow White latina because I don't think changing the race of an established character really solves or necessarily helps representation?? We have had so many depictions of these old stories, why is changing their skin color a way of "updating" or "progressing" these stories? We don't need that! And it honestly is creating, what I see, as a weird double standard? Because snow white was originally white, it's now kinda bad? And needs an update? Imagine if they didn't make mulan Chinese, or if Princess and the Frog got a live action remake and they made Tiana white. What then? There would be outrage. Yet changing white characters is fine. That doesn't change anything for the better, it's going into this odd double standard territory that being white legit doesn't matter l?
Also, I personally don't like Rachel Zegler as Snow White because she does not give Snow White in general🥲 I have watched all the interviews she has been in and I cannot shake off her attitude. It's like she feels SO important and feels SO highly of herself in a lowkey arrogant way and it honestly grosses me out😅. Like she doesn't even like the original story yet accepted this job. I really don't like that so many celebrities complain about representation and yet acts like they are doing something GROUND breaking when it really isn't that overly important for what they're doing? And also what attitude they have going into it? I personally don't even have a problem with the CGI. I genuinely don't care XD I care more about who is representing this film and Rachel Zegler just isn't it for me. She comes off as a fake nice girl, and I feel like a lot of us can say we are just sick of this false kindness in the media. Im all over the place, there is just a lot to say about this film coming out that I'm getting all muddled and flustered.

To know why representation makes a difference, it helps a lot to be familiar atleast a bit with the history of racism in America. You say they shouldn't change the race of an "established character"; *every* protoganist or somewhat positive/likeable character in movies started as white. For decades there was no such thing as a leading man or leading lady that wasn't white.
So of course any older character is going to have been "established" as white, because racism meant that they weren't allowed to be portrayed as anything else!
So if we can hopefully move beyond that racist idea, movies can then reflect a bit more of real life; that is, people of all races can be the heroes, the protagonists, the main characters of stories.
We already have an endless amount of stories with white main characters, so when a NEW movie is made, why wouldn't we sometimes put in people of other races? Why would we want to stick to the racist ideals of decades past and only allow white characters to be in the spotlight? That makes no sense.

@@colinthemarinesI see this point 100%. My problem is that I would rather see more original stories. I feel like rehashing stories that already exist kinda cancels out inclusivity for me in a weird way. I just don't find it creative or progressive at all to change stories that already have had multiple retellings, ya know? I certainly want more representation! But in this way? I just find it odd because nothing new is really being brought to Hollywood and the amount of talent that is out there.

@ Oh I definitely prefer fresh, original storylines too! Like Aubrey mentioned Mirror Mirror in the video, which is based on the story of Snow White but has a really fresh fun take on it, and adds new backstories for the little people characters. I think Disney is focused on making $$ a lot of the time these days, they end up doing sequels and rehashing old storylines rather than letting creativity take the lead.
So I don't think this Snow White will be a very good movie at all lol, but I think that will be due to the writing, story decisions and lack of creativity, nothing to do with the main character's race.

@ i definitely agree with that! And I am actually planning to watch Mirror Mirror because of this video too :) I feel like that is what our day and age now lacks for some reason. Somehow it is harder to bring characters to life? It's really sad. I just hope Hollywood will stop focusing on what social media really has to say and make actual changes to entertainment! There is so much fresh talent and points of view that creating new stories should be considered through new eyes, ya know?

“Live action”… and then over half of the CRUCIAL CAST is all cgi. It’s literally not that hard to just write good characters and then cast little people to play the roles. There are SO MANY hopeful actors who would have done amazing.
