The history of dwarfism is a great example of the idea that you can be adored and wanted by your oppressors but it’s never the same as being respected as an equal. A difficult concept to convey at times as discrimination becomes less overt. Thank you for your work
You have such a calming voice and with your detailed descriptions, attention to detail and lightheartedness - I would have loved to have you as a history teacher growing up. I would have paid so much more attention and learned so much!
Thank you so much for making this! As an average height person I am ashamed that I have not known most of this history and am looking forward to more content like this, from great creators like you ❤ you make the content informative, funny, and entertaining
The history of how little people were treated reminds me of the "polowija" in javanese culture, little people who acted as courtiers, attendants, and advisors within the javanese court. Little people were also considered to have mystical powers and sometimes even incarnations of gods. Some little people were known to be close trusted advisors to leaders due to their supposed wisdom and fortune-telling. It was also considered bad luck to disrespect and mistreat little people, there's a story of a foreign ambassador who disrespected a little person within the javanese court despite being warned of the misfortune it would bring and that ambassador was said to have died in battle soon after due to the bad luck from carelessly patting a little person's head. The death or disappearance of little people within the king's court was also said to be an omen of a dynasty's impending downfall.
Thank you for taking the time to put this podcast/video together. Your energy is so wonderful and I am super appreciative of the history lesson (also WTFFF was/is wrong with people). Anyways thank you thank you!! I hope your week is bright and negative stranger interactions are at a minimum. 💜☺️
@@theaubreysmalls it means a lot that you replied, your tiktok and instagram have been a huge resource for me to learn and have taught me so much so I can't wait for more long form videos here! Thank you for all the time you spend doing this, it's very much appreciated ❤️
i loved this video! it breaks my heart to hear such horrific things, and hearing about the abuse you face 😖 but i’m glad i’m more informed now. you’re amazing at presenting in a captivating way, the half hour absolutely flew by. i’ll be looking forward to watching your documentary! so so happy i stumbled across your channel
The book about Pearla and her family is, "We Were Giants". Billy Barty was a sweetheart. I met him when I was 12 and was in awe. Aretha Franklin toured with a LP? So cool. Beautiful voice. Aubrey, since running across your channel last week, you have taught me more of our history than I knew existed. Thank you.
As a non english native speaker, this format is even better to understand all of it! I can't thank you enough for your work, really. As an average height queer dad of a 3yo little person, your work means so much to me. It's been hard to find content that questions ableism on this level, and everything you bring on Social médias just help me so much. And although a lot of this history is painful to listen, learn it with Mariah Carey references really helps haha. I can't wait to the next episode and to your documentary to comes out 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
About society moving backwards, one thing super scary for me is the "cure" an average height cis white woman came up with for acondroplasia. I don't know how is it in the US, but in Brazil and Europe, parents of children from age 2 are pressured to give daily injections to their kids until their 15 or 16, in order to gain a few centimeters and "reduce the acondroplasia gene".... Anyway this episode was really great thank you again!
That lady is detached from reality. You can't affect a gene with injections; only gene therapy (i.e. CRISPR), which I'm pretty sure isn't approved for use on humans yet. And we don't need fewer people with dwarfism; we need more accommodations for all of the people society isn't built for, little people included!
Will you ever talk about the small folks from the movie "Freaks" from 1932? How people thought it was a horror film and rated x. And how the original film was much more nasty and graphic but eventually was cut down.
11:20 LMFAOOOOOOO YOU FUNNY ASF but trueeeee . Some people always respond with an “AllLivesMatter” attitude whenever someone is talking about some specific area .
To be fair, Charles Stratton actually acted and was a polyglot. That's why he was so well paid. He was said to be very talented. Additionally, back then little people had few options. I am torn about him because I hate the mocking, but I know that things could be so much worse than how he lived. People are horrible and sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do to be paid.
I am glad you d is this because, that’s a question I wanted to know. Where little people come from? You don’t see them hardly no one where in history. I wonder if there was any slaves little people ? Why is it that they have deleted little people out of history? So I hope you do more videos
it's not a slur. If it were it wouldn't be used to describe animals, sports etc. It just means little or small, and there's nothing wrong with either of those.

I've always had such a crush on Warwick Davis. He had like the most luscious hair when he was younger and like the brightest smile.
His humor is so heartwarming
Was so excited to hear that your on UA-cam now! Your outfit is killing it❤
