I was a Dark Shadows freak from the get go at the age of 8. Running home from school every day to watch it and then to discuss it at school the next day was SO exciting! DS was the best soap opera EVER!
That's the whole thing, like Frid said 'in a play you say the exact same words every night, so of course you get to memorize them but in this you have a different script every day.'
interesting story on how he got that part. He moved to the USA from Canada to start a school for acting. One of his American friends introduced him to Dan Curtis who offered him the role of Barnabas. The rest is DS history!
Correction of information regarding Jonathan Frid. Mr. Frid was living between NYC and San Diego before Dark Shadows. He had plans to move out to CA. to obtain a job as a College Level Drama teacher. He had a degree in Directing from Yale where he met and became friends with Ron Sproat. Ron later became a writer for Dark Shadows. When they decided to cast for the role of Barnabas, DS writer and Frid's friend Ron Sproat contacted Frid about the role and he, Ron pushed for Frid to get the role. The other actor being considered for the role was stage/musical actor Bert Convy but Bert was too charming looking. Dan Curtis wanted Frid for the role because he had that villainous look in his face.
yes he was perfect for the role. I could never picture actor Bert Convy doing this role. He , Bert was too much of a charmer or romantic for a part like this.
I watched this at age nine or ten at the time I didn’t even equate this to a “soap opera”. Great show, I just liked it for the horror aspect. I even had Dark Shadows board game.
I was in junior high school when my grandmother told us of this show. My mom approved because she knew we'd come right home- show was at 4pm. Seen every episode.
Roxanne's hair is on point for the period and Desmond's is pretty good too. Julia and Joan Bennett, um not so much, their 'dos are very 60s! But love me some Dark Shadows! The period costumes were mostly correct and always very good quality, I think they were loaned from various theaters. The "modern" clothing of their present time, the 1960s is also too fun to see today. All the mod era stuff is a hoot!
@@kensellers4082 I am up to episode 1080, something like that, with Kate Jackson as the ghost Daphne. And she's got on a really great dark plum and black 1840s dress, and even is wearing a fairly authentic looking headpiece with bows over the ears, BUT her hair!! She has a 1970s flip hairdo! Seriously? It ruins the whole thing. And I love those 1970s men's wide lapel Playboy suits, polyester! Haha!!
@@kensellers4082 I remember those, my parents watched Carson. Doc Severinsen was a wild dresser, even for the era. And Johnny Carson had his own line of suits, so he had to represent his brand. Burt Reynolds was always a treat to see on The Tonight Show, both for his clothes and his personality. I'd go back and be a kid back then again in a nanosecond.
I was a big fan of DS! I was 13-14 when it came out! I even named my future daughter after the show, Angelique! She's 37 today and loves the name, and I'm now 67 and still a fan & watch it from my collection of tapes.
John Karlee plays so many different parts but I like him as Willie Loomis best, I felt sorry for Willie after he turned humble, he always was scared and bullied.
How many times did Barnabas knock on the front door at Collinwood and announce that he was the long lost cousin from England? It was like a broken record at this point in the series.
"L.Long", don't forget Lara! She was murder on young guys with raging hormones; every time she breathed, I was BESIDE myself. And at the end of her character's tenure, after all was said and done, Angelique/Miranda, turned out to be the show's greatest heroine--QUITE a transition from the most nasty villainess! She actually had Barnabas' back, all the time!
Wow where is Graham Bell when you need his nvention at this time in 1840.. a telephone call would have saved so much trouble than all that traveling in all that bad weather.😞
As it says, he is meeting the 1840 family. If memory serves, it had something to do with Roxanne, but hang me if I recall what it was about. It seems Barnabas did one time hop into the 'vampire' Barnabas and Julia from 'the present' (1970-71) had already leapt there somehow and she took on the identity of Julia Collins as an explanation, then when the vampire Barnabas was taken over by 1970 Barnabas, she had to do some filling in. I'm guessing vampire Barnabas had just attacked Roxanne, if memory serves, but now it was 1970 Barnabas, so he had some 'splaining to do, Lucy. But Julia had to fill him in on what all had gone down to begin with, but they weren't getting a chance. The final 'time leap' was on that staircase. That may be this one. I think Julia made it up the staircase, but then Barnabas had to use the I-ching, if you recall that, they'd pronounce it "e-ching". Or I'm just shooting in the wind here!
From what I read was that by this point Frid was tired of playing the Barnabas character and was asking producers to create another character for him to play to give him a break from playing Barnabas. Hence once the 1840 storyline wrapped up and went to the 1841 parallel time story he was given a new character, the character of Bramwell Collins who was the son of the PT Barnabas. In story was that the ghost of Gerard Stiles had summoned his army of the dead to destroy Collinwood in the present day. Julia managed to escape via the "Stairwell of time" and ended up in 1840. Barnabas however was unable to follow Julia up the stairwell, thus had to use I Ching in order to have his astro body enter his physical 1840 body. Though Julia believing that Barnabas already used the I Ching and released Barnabas from his coffin. The problem was though the present day Barnabas hadn't used the I Ching yet so she released the evil vampire Barnabas. The evil vampire Barnabas bit Roxanne, and was ready to kill Julia right when present day Barnabas managed to get the I Ching to work. Julia tired to use hypnosis to make Roxanne forget about Barnabas biting her in an attempt to make people believe that it was an animal attack and not suspect a vampire attack.
@@kensellers4082 I didn't like the PT 1840 storyline either. I think it had to do with the fact that there were no present day characters involved in that storyline. The 1795 storyline had Victoria Winters there. 1897 storyline and the 1970 PT storyline both had Barnabas (and at times Julia) there. I think it was the Leviathan storyline where DS started going downhill. That storyline was just disappointing especially after the stellar 1897 storyline. The 1970 PT storyline kept the show afloat, but then they tried to recreate the magic of the 1897 storyline by doing the 1840 storyline. Maybe if there was a regular character from the present day in the 1840 PT storyline then maybe the show could have kept going by that point or continued on with a new storyline in the present day (like maybe with the return of Count Petofi) then maybe the show could have continued for a little while longer.
