Grew up watching Dark Shadows as a teenager. Now binge-watching it, at 71 with my 10 year old granddaughter via Prime Video. It is just as addictive now as it was 50+ years ago. Jonathan Frid saved DS from cancellation with his powerful and captivating stage presence, beautifully expressive eyes, rich voice and elegant Shakespearean tones. His imagining of Barnabas, making him a sympathetic, lonely soul tortured by a vengeful curse, is what captivated DS watchers and kept them tuning in. Jonathan Frid was nothing short of brilliant in his portrayal. RIP Jonathan. You have achieved immortality once again, but this time through your magnificent acting.

Brilliant acting by veteran stage actors - Jonathan Frid, Louis Edmonds, Joan Bennett, Thayer David; John Karlen, mystery, romance and suspense mixed with the supernatural and, best of all, the very handsome and always intriguing Barnabas Collins. 🖤🧛‍♂️ The theatricality, dialogue flubs, pesky flies, coughs off camera, props crashing to the floor, tree trunks moving...are a whole other show!

I wonder if Desmond asked Barnabas and Julia and Professor Stokes what was the in store for the Collins family and for the United States during the next 130 years?
Heck, they could even have told Desmond when he and the others were going to die.
I guess they did not want to risk tampering with the normal course of history by telling Desmond, Letitia and Quentin and Daphne what the future held for each of them on account of that reason. They had almost done enough damage by their repeated trips back in time.

What I love about Dark Shadows is that I watched the original run about partway through from about 1968 to 1971 at age 7 to 9 or 10 (I forget what month it finished its run), then watched it again on SciFi in my 30s. Now I can watch it on Pluto TV on the Dark Shadows channel, all day if I wanted to and I just turned 60! I love having this show available to enjoy so many times in my life. I refused to watch the "new," show on ABC and the Johnny Depp disrespectful farce movie. My allegiance stayed with the original show and cast.

This SHOULD have been the final episode of the series (per John Karlen) and I agree. They had everything wrapped up here. no loose ends. The 1841 p/t was bad and unnecessary. The cast and crew were burned out, and they just wanted to get the making of 'Night of Dark Shadows' which they were obligated to make for MGM, over with.

    • @j.r.dawson5723
      @j.r.dawson5723 5 років тому +20

No, this isn't the last episode. The series ends in the year 1841 parallel time. Since Angelique removed the curse off Barnabas in 1840, he was never a vampire in parallel time, and had a son by Josette named Bramwell who married Daphne Harridge (Kate Jackson) but is still madly in love with her sister, Catherine (Laura Parker) and the family in parallel time are haunted by a curse placed on a room where a lottery is held and a member of the family has to spend the night in the room to either surive or come out insane. Bramwell and Catherine break the curse after Quentin, Gabriel, and Morgan fail to, and two die...Flora and Julia are spared, Julia is a real Collins in Parallel Time because she lied in the other time by saying she was Barnabas' sister. Flora, Julia, Bramwell and Catherine live happily ever after at Collinwood after breaking the curse and the only he is the only Male Collins left of the line, until their children are born. Bramwell's sister Melanie marries and moves to NY. Melanie did not know that Josette was her mother as her real father took her away from Josette to avoid scandal and forced Flora to raise her.

The show ended on a quick bit, which I still find amusing. Hated Angelique and Barnabas didn't live happily ever after, but I guess there was to be some consolation with . . . . . . Bramwell and Catherine.
The Nancy Barrett character, I thought she was Melanie, she was being paired up once more with Willie Loomis, whoever he was here. Not going to try to keep the names straight, but she was attacked and brought in and placed on the couch.
"Those bitemarks on her neck. They look like a wild animal or . . . a vampire bat!" Duh-duh-DUH!
Then Stokes' narration comes over the rooms lit up by flashing lightning to declare it was a wild animal that bit her and they all lived happily ever after, better delivered than what I just typed.

Yes, bullies are terrible to deal with when you are a young kid
I don’t know how girls deal with bullies, but as a young boy, you just have to punch them right in the mouth to stop them from intimidating you.
Actor Michael Caine was bullied as a young boy and his father told him, that even if you lose the fight, it’s much better to confront the bully than to just take it from the b@st@rd meekly.
I guess that’s why many parents send their kids to karate or judo classes, to even up the odds in a fight if their son or daughter is on the small side.

Years later, you can just tell people to do something anatomically impossible if they give you any static about being a DS fan.
I went to a couple of the NYC Dark Shadows Festivals between 1988 and 1997. It was great seeing and getting to speak with the late, great Jonathan Frid, KLS (Maggie Evans), Lara Parker and the late Louis Edmonds; they were all very friendly and great fun to speak with.

When this episode aired, all the DS fans did not know that this was the very last time we would ever see Barnabas, Dr. Hoffman, Professor Stokes and all of the other popular and even beloved contemporary DS characters.
We also did not find out if Maggie Evans did or did not ever go to Windcliff for a second time. And, was the vampire Roxanne still in that locked coffin in the Old House or had she really been destroyed in 1840?
Instead, Dan Curtis subjected DS fans to several months of sheer boredom as he concluded the series with the dreadful 1840 Parallel Time storyline.
Years later, Lara Parker remarked at a book signing, that the 1840 PT episodes were very boring; even the DS actors knew this storyline was a loser.

Yes, and I understand that Jonathan Frid did not want to portray a vampire anymore. He wasn’t opposed to portraying Barnabas, so long as Barnabas was not a vampire.
I happened to see Joan Bennett on a local tv show in NYC several years after DS had ended. Someone asked why the show had been cancelled and she replied that the show’s writers had run out of new ideas for DS and, besides, Dan Curtis was eager to move into other projects by 1971.

Just watched all these episodes on tubi. Barnabus, had to mentally send his spirt to inhabit his resurrected body, in 1840. He thus should have had to be rechained in his coffin in the crypt, as his body awaited him back in 1971 but then again, it wasn't quite the same 1971.

Willie Loomis was actually a more dimentional person than Desmond which is what actors strive for. Yes he was a dishonest opportunist in the beginning, but then he became Barnabas' loyal servant and later close friend. He was always trying to protect others like Maggie & Julia from Barnabas, even cared about his old friend Mc Quire, although he beat Willie. Willie was broken hearted to see McQuire killed. All in all Willie Loomis had a tender heart, even though he had the lowest status of every main character on the show.
