Thanks. I did try and tweak the tone as best I could. There’s also a bit of bleed from the backing track which I couldn’t completely eliminate which is most noticeable right at the start
It's because of covers like yours that im leaning towards beginning to learn the bass. I could listen to this song for 2hours at a time, just for that bass line; now that I've watched you play it, the drive is ever stronger. Thanks a lot for this vid.
I personally can't see how you could do that any better brotha, I think you killed it....but in your mind as it's now 3 years on, do you think you could play that track any better?....when you look back on that video did you see mistakes you made or things you could have done better that only you can see, other than different pajama bottoms, lol?.....Hope that made sense.... Thanks...
Hello Dave it sounds fantastic!... a dumb question from a newbie ... can this be played in a 4st bass, without changing its “standard” tuning (from one of your responses, I understood that you adjusted the tuning of your bass to play it)
This is late but you’d have to adjust the tuning. You could probably work around it but it’d be impractical to play. This is because the song is in the key of eb or d# and the most convenient way to play that note is to tune down a half step on a four string
Dude got me wanting to thump a Bass, matter of fact I'm going to get one with all the time I have on my hand, give me a good 30 days & as Calrence Carter would say I'll be stroking. Everyone will be saying Herbe Herbe Herbe you be stroking Watch me!
Hi! It’s been a while since I recorded this but as I recall I did need to detune. It might have been slightly less than a half step. I tuned by ear against the original record.
@@davebridges2984 Hi Dave, thank you so much for your (very quick!) answer. We try to play the song with our band in original tuning and our bass player has only a four string bass. (Most tutorials or covers use a five string...) Best wishes from northern Germany.
I think the original record was slowed down a few beats in production which adjusts the pitch of the instruments before Chaka laid down her vocal so I tuned by ear to suit.
@@MrKatcheok Columbo, if you look carefully I play the open E string and hit the octave on the seventh fret/third string with my index finger for the first part of the riff. Then I slide my hand down the neck of the guitar (towards the headstock in case you’re not familiar with bass anatomy) to do the fill using my pinky on that high E on the same string so my index finger is ready on the fifth fret to do the quick descending run. I keep my hand in place here to play the repeat of the open E and the octave, this time with my pinky. I found this the most comfortable and clean way to make these note transitions. It’s also worth pointing out that tuning is a half step down as I don’t have a 5-string bass (give or take a cent) so the note is a D# but by tuning down a half step it’s played on a traditional E position. So no, I’ve not faked anything. In fact, I can openly admit I hit a bum note when I was improvising towards the end of the song but it seemed to land in the groove so I kept it in. Check out 3:54. Try harder next time, dude 👍🏼

Thankyou! I hope you do pick up a bass and start playing! There’s never a moment wasted if it’s time spent in service of learning.
@@davebridges2984 that was just seamless, so smooth. By the end today, I'd have added 20 to 30 views to the count🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yo! Love this song and that bass line is 🔥 You nailed it man 🙌🏼
Thankyou!
tuning down to Eb standard is really smart nice work
Nice!.
Excellent. Finally someone doing a serious cover instead of wanking out over the song.
Wow! That was better than I can say -
Gracias por haber hecho el cover con el tradicional bajo de 4 cuerdas!
¡De Nada!
Just watched it twice 😄
Smokin!

Very cool...

Melhor do que a original! 😁
👍👍🏻👍🏼👍🏾
Awesome cover man, and the tone/ effects are great. Would love to know what effects/ effects unit you used on this track if you are happy to share?
I love it, is there a tab chart? Thanks for sharing your amazing sound..zm
Excellent cover. Chic's bassist uses a Stingray also

Awe, no bass solo ?. This is a hard song, good job though, you nailed it.
Would be great to know the tab for this if possible? :) Struggling to learn this one
Well done -it would be nice to see the 3 wankers that gave thumbs down and see how they could do better
How deep is your bass???
That was solid. You tuned down the bass, right? I thought you were kind of overdressed. LOL
Great job! I can't seem to access the transcript. A little help? What am I doing wrong?
I haven’t prepared a transcript for any of my cover videos. UA-cam may have added one automatically which probably doesn’t make any sense.

Je vous verrais bien en train de jouer à la basse Forget Me Nots de Patrice Rushen 😉👋👍
Amitiés JL
J’adore cette chanson. Je veux l’apprendre.
Merci mon ami!
Hey Dave, great, great job! :) But I found no explanation or comment for this: Did You tune Your bass a half step down???
Hi! It’s been a while since I recorded this but as I recall I did need to detune. It might have been slightly less than a half step. I tuned by ear against the original record.

What was your signal flow? Outboard gear?
It was DI into a Scarlett 2i2 then I added some native FX in Cubase.
Did you tune down a 1/2 step?
I think the original record was slowed down a few beats in production which adjusts the pitch of the instruments before Chaka laid down her vocal so I tuned by ear to suit.
Nice cover, did you use an octaver?
Nope, just tweaked some stock FX in Cubase.
Which bass notes did you play?
Uhh…all of them? I don’t have a tab but worked it out by ear.
we gonna get davie 504 to play funk muic
Weird tuning, but I found him
What’s the tuning?
It's amazing but need some flavour
If you uploaded once a week you could soon be earning $25k a year on youtube....
wow fake! 0.47 !!!!you play the wrong note bro but its sounds D# ...good try!
Fake? No sir but thanks for listening.
come on explain what i said then! @@davebridges2984

Thanks. As you can see I played this on a 4 string, and per my previous response I did need to slightly de-tune.
