Thank you Soo much for the kayak tip, been using braid to flouro setup on my kayak and could figure out why I was having such a hard time setting my hooks! Took your advice and switched to all braid on the kayak and it has greatly increased my hookset percentage.
Just want to say thanks for this video. My finesse set up is now 15# hi-vis yellow power pro to an 8# flouro leader using the FG knot. Have had much success so far this fall with it. Want to say thanks also for providing educational content based channel. The info provided saves those of us who are less experienced a lot of time/money on the learning curve. Tight lines sir!!👍🏻
Great info Gene. I second everything you say in this video. I have switched two of my four spinning setups over to braid/fluoro AND have been using the FG knot and couldn't be happier. Sensitivity is great. Have not tried the yellow braid but will.
One of my salt water buddies showed me the double-uni knot for braid to flouro connections. I've been using that for about a year with really good results. And I can tie that knot in just a few seconds.
I know this is an old comment, but how? I need to practice. Learned it last night but man I spent almost an hour trying to get it tied. Maybe because it was mono backing to braid on the reel, but I just couldn't control it at all
I agree with you 100% here Gene. I was skeptical of going braid to fluoro leader until I used the FG knot. That knot is a great knot and since I decided to start using this line set-up, I have no desire to go back to spooling a full reel of fluoro. Like you said, the durability of braided line has saved me quite a bit of money b/c now I only use very small portions of fluoro for my leader. Good stuff!
Love your videos, started bass fishing 3 months ago and watching you, AP, flair, jon.b, and lunkers. I go fishing at least 5 days a week now and am hooked for life, my p.b lmb is 4.8 and am working on breaking that. Your videos helped me get to were im now taking friends and family out and teaching them how to fish. Thanks for the videos and helping me learn to bass fish.
You're welcome. I'm glad I can help
My guy!!!! I’m a kayak fisherman and thank you so much for mentioning what you did about the give from the yak! I was like wow that makes total sense! Thank you!
i started doing this on a few of my walleye jig rods 3 years ago..now most of my rods are set up the same.. although i dont fish much for largemouth..mostly walleye and smallmouth.this set up can apply to many different species..awsome vid gene..
Great video, 100% agree that the FG knot changed the way I fished. Take time, give it patience and you will all master this knot!
Welcome to the club. I realized a few weeks ago that every reel I actively use, that isn't throwing a big swimbait, is spooled up with braid. I kind of made the transition without any real plans to, it just kept making sense for each setup. Being a uni to uni leader knot guy myself, I haven't had much of any trouble with breakages.
The FG knot has changed my spinning rig fishing and I love it. To have the invisible floro and the sensitivity of braid ,fishing mono for years the braid is a whole new world and not having to worry about old mono line memory and having to change it. I have had that first braid I put on for well over a year I can not even remember how long now. If it ain't broke don't fix it. The FG knot is not hard and it is the best knot. I got some really bad cabelas line and wasted about a month with it on a new spinning rig I got. Clue on the fifth cast the line comes back with a huge knot in it cut it off and go buy some better braid. I got 15 lb power pro green on it and I am back to loving it, it makes fishing easier. Fluke master thank you for taking my spin fishing to another level.
Another great video Gene! I've used this setup for years, now on all my rods. I think how you tie your knot matters more than the knot. I use a double uni with a palomar on the end and never have a problem. Especially good for kayakers like me who can't run the line out behind the boat to get rid of twist.
I know you probably know this. But, once your done using he braid on your baitcaster. Just tie it to a different reel and reel it on it. Then you'll use the part of braid that has never been used.
good tip
NC Outdoors With Justin B. I use a mono backer of roughly 1/3 the capacity of the spool. On a baitcaster it helps to keep braid from digging in. On a spinning reel, it helps anchor it to the spool. In both cases it reduces the amount of braid you need to fill a spool so you can spool more reels.
Thanks
Excellent and definitely agreeable video. Braid is the bees knees. I've swapped over my entire arsenal and I've more than tripled my hook ups. Great video.
Thanks Vinny
Yeah I just recently started using the FG knot and I love it. THere is a bit of learning curve but once you get it, it's fantastic.
I use a Uni-Uni knot for my braid to flouro setup and hasn't failed me yet! great video.
Same~solid for me all around. I just suck at FG,& don't wanna throw something I'm not confident with tying.
In the Pacific Northwest we have been doing leader to braid for years for spinning and baitcaster as well. We use yellow braid which is great to use as a visual indicator when dropshotting and the bite is light.
Love braid after watching one of your earlier videos, also, I now use nothing but the FG knot. Thanks for the great advice.
You're welcome Wayne
Gene, your the best! Thanks for teaching me how to bass fish. I will never go back to fishing for 10" Rainbow. I switched all my lines to braid a few years ago. After going through multiple products, I have settled on Power Pro Super 8 Slick. I am able to cast farther with less issues and it seems to last forever. I use brown around timber, green in stained water, and blue in clear water. It also comes in Hi Vis Yellow, but I have never used that color. I started tying on a floro leader for drop shots and finesse fishing once you taught the FG knot.
Thanks Steven
Kast King makes a really nice braided line. I use the hi vis yellow they have and absolutely love it Gene!
I have always used yellow braid and you are right it is getting less common. But it is out there. Sufix 832 seems to be going yellow in most weights. Great video. Thanks
Hi there Flukemaster just wanted to say its always nice to come watch your channel, vs lunker , jon b , and perrick just have not been doing good vids lately they mess around to much i love that you always give us some info.... keep up the vids love your show
Great video. I always fish braid to flouro with an FG knot. I love it!!
Good stuff Gene.. I just made the switch to all braid an I'm amazed at the sensitivity. I believe if a fish sneezed at your bait you would feel it.
Tell me more about this FG knot you speak! I'm an old school monofilament fisherman that, like you, was totally turned off of braid using Spiderwire when it fist came out. I lost so many fish and lures because I couldn't master a decent knot with the stuff and said the hell with it, never picked it up again until now. Just purchased a premium casting rod real combination and want to create a positive, new experience with this new setup. I throughly enjoy your channel... a sincere thanks for all the information you have passed along! 👍 👍
Thank you for this video man, I've commented in other vids you have about how you are really helping me. I got a nice new baitcaster and have used straight 30lb black fireline braid for everything.. im got some 17lb fluorocarbon im going to try to rig a leader to but if no luck ill go on and buy some lighter braid and fluoro
FG Knot is life! Was great to meet you at Icast Mate (a few weeks late i know haha), love seeing an American getting behind braid to leader. Back in Australia it's predominantly what we use.
Agree 100% with Flukemaster. Except I have no problems with uni to uni knot. Braid to Flouro is great for your kids spin rods. Way less twisting and casts a wacky rig a mile.
A great video worth sharing.
A braided line and fluorocarbon leader made a big difference for me fishing for walleye in Canada last week. The bites were very light the majority of the time, unless a pike came calling. Then it felt like a snag, at first.
Braid works well for crankbaits. I use 30lb braid exclusively for square bills on the CA Delta. The thinner diameter to break strength is amazing. It makes up for the "floating"
I've tried to tell my buddies about braid on spinning reels and they just don't get it. So I sent this video to tell hopefully they will listen to you. Oh can't wait for the One3 reels to be released. Keep up the great work Gene.
I was a three year hold out too. I didn't believe it until I tried it.
Great video. I've already started making the switch on my spinning set ups, debating doing it on my casting gear also once I work through my copoly stash. Try as I might though I just can't get the hand on the fg knot. Having good luck with the double uni though.
I use the Alberto knot on my saltwater setups. I never had a knot get beat up and come apart.
nice vid. again i am a kayak fisherman- i use braid 95% beside my panfish pole that has 4 lbs. braid with 7 lbs. florocarbon leader.
Best fishing youtuber. Thanks for the great videos and for so much instruction, you've helped my knowledge grow greatly
Thanks
I use braid as backing on all my reels. I use a fuoro leader on most all spinning setups. I even use braid backing on my cranking setups but only enough so that it NEVER comes off the spool during a cast. It increases the casting distance because the spool spins faster.
Whoever invented braid was a genius and a fishing hero. Just switched and my jaw dropped due to the increase in performance. Im dumbfounded. From now on I will always use braid as a main line.
I've used the modified Albright knot for my braid to flouracarbon leaders for years and have never had a knot failure. Easy to tie and the knot is very slim and compact, go thru the guides with no problems. You should try it
That's what I used to use until I saw the strength tests of the FG
berkley nano is my favorite also my most trusted know is the albright knot for leaders and palamour for my lures.
Hey Gene, I have fly fished for a good part of my fishing years. However, I am not as steady in gravel and rock rivers and streams. So, i have used your channel to start bass fishing. However, I also troll for large lake trout in Lake Jocassee, SC. Sorry alot of preamble, but I use a blood not to attache a brad to a fluorocarbon leader. The blood not has never fail me in river or stream trout and steal head fishing. I use 6 to seven twist on each line and pull it tight. The advantage to this not is you do not have to keep tension on the line. Wanted your thoughts on the use of a blood not.
braid to floro here. always used a double uni, never had a problem with the knots.
Thanks for the tips! Your videos are awesome and very useful.
Just started bass fishing and your videos help a lot keep it up!
Thanks Joey
Gonna be in Phenix City, AL next week if your out fishing let me know. I'm always up for time on the water.
I love these teaching videos fluke! keep them coming cuz they help so much!
Thanks Greg
Great video as always Gene, thank you.
The fig know it by far the best knot I’ve ever used, I even use it for trout fishing with 2lb test
Using braid on spinning reels especially fishing from a kayak (for all the reasons you - and Chad Hoover - have shared) has convinced me!! I switched from my previous main of 8lb fluoro. I even learned and have been impressed with the FG knot so I could tie a piece of it onto braid as need be. Then I found/bought 15lb "TRANSLUCENT" color braid from a company which I will not name (their translucent braid is white and visible above water yet less visible than conventional colors of non-translucent braids below water). Its 15lb diameter is even thinner than 8lb fluoro so adding the fluorocarbon leader is probably overkill. I'm going to fish one reel of each side-by-side for a while to see if the fish shy away from pure 15lb TRANSLUCENT without leader.
great tips, I'm sharing this in my fishing group "Wayne county's finest bass and pike slayers"
Wayne county p.a ??
Thanks for talking about line for Kayak fishing.
I use 12 ft leader on my braid with blood knot, i never change it for a month, works great
Well I watch Jon b, lunkerstv, &apbassin. I can say your videos are by far the best. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks man.
I've heard braided for cranking is good as well because of the small line diameter, which means less resistance. you can use a 20lb test that has a 6lb diameter. makes sense but I have yet to try it.
So would you go braid to fluro on a spinnerbait/chatterbait rod or straight fluro. And what # test.
20 lb braid, 12 leader, alberto. great for wormin. im new to flouro and was not aware of "special" knots for flouro, always learning.
Because of how fluoro can get damaged while tightening a knot there are bad knots and good knots.
I made the switch awhile back and the only thing that I hate about this setup is that on a baitcaster, it's hard to get some birds nest out. I also hate the noise of reeling in braid when using a moving bait, but that's just me. Otherwise as a kayak fisherman, this really helps setting the hook hard when you don't have the most leverage like he said. Now, I made it to where my worm, jig, or any bottom contact bait is paired with this setup, but everything else like spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, crankbaits, or anything moving constantly is used as normal.
I have been using braid on my spinning rods for about six years now. The one thing that you have to be watchful of is line twist. About every three to four hours of steady fishing I cut the lure off and run the line out behind a moving boat to eliminate the twist. If you do not do this periodically, you may end up with a tangled mess.
I rig exactly the same, braid for everything but crankin!
these videos are awesome Gene. keep em coming
Thanks
new sub here..... Kayak fishing I lost 3 large bass just yesterday from bad hooksets.
I am thinking going braid will help me out alot.
Thanks for the info !!!!
Sarge's Adventures just lost my definite PB today in a kayak.. broke me off.. definitely going to braid
I switched all my reels to braid/fc leader right after I watched your original FG knot video (yellow braid to be specific). I won't use anything else now =]
Ok back to braid, I took a break and went back to mono, but I am going to learn the FG knot and try it with Fluorocarbon
I love your teaching videos and tips
i have been doing this lately, and i fish from a kayak.. my reasons are different however.. I'm tired of respooling my reels every time i go out because of the memory.. the braid of,course has none.
Thank you! Another great video!
thanks for the info really helpful....
hey question i just started using braid anf for my trout set up i have a 10 lb braid witch is very thin would i use a straight braid or a flouro carbon leader for trout since i no flouro is invisible but i did notice that the 10 lb braid is thinner the the 10 lb flouro i have.
So would you go braid/leader for all purpose setups? I only have a ml/f spinning setup and a m/f baitcaster setup that I use to throw everything (including cranks), and I've been using copolymer since it seems okay at everything.
When going from mono (backing) to bradded line to fluorocarbon for your leader… what size diameter leader should you use? Do you match the diameter to the bradded line? Seems like if you do you're defeating the purpose that the bradded line affords you with respect to the test straight. Thanks
Thx for the FG knot tip!
Can you use the FG knot to tie fluorocarbon to mono or copolymer if my main line is heavier and I want a lighter fluorocarbon leader (visibility concerns)
Finally someone made this video. Thank you. I'm new to bass fishing and I've always wondered why use braid with a leader. I didn't understand why someone would add an extra knot in their line. I knew there had to be good reasons but couldn't figure out why. Gene, is the FG knot the only knot you trust? I just learned the modified Albright knot to connect lines. Great video.
The Modified Albright is a great knot too. Just a little larger than the FG but does protect the fluoro from hitting the guides.
I use ten pound braid with a ten pound florocarbon with fg knot .the dia of braid is less then florocarbon .should I use smaller dia then the braid , for drop shot .thx
Are you using braid with Spinnerbaits. Top Water, Jigs, T-tigs? on bairfaster, what lb
Can somebody help me with a question?
I've seen the short leaders with the ends on them. These reels of leaders is new to me. What is the advantage to having 10' of leader over the pre-made 12"?
I like to night fish some. Is there any braid that will glow under a black light? If so what is the best? I don’t have different rods for day and night so would like something that works well for both if possible.
Thanks
gene man awesome useful vids keep them coming
I would suggest trying out the double uni knot for braid to floro. It works great for me
I've tried it. The FG is still stronger. Not that the Uni to Uni is a bad knot but the FG preforms better.
Is there a differance between regular florocarbon line and florocarbon leader material? Which do you use?
Can you tie the braid directly onto the baitcaster? I saw a video of yours a while back where you said braid will spin if it's tied directly onto your spool. Would you put mono then braid then fluoro?
So what would you use for topwater lures? Only braid line? or braid main line with Mono as leader?
Did you ever end up going all braid? I've seen a few vids of you talking about doing that but the newer vids i don't think i saw much braid
Very informational video. Helps a lot.
Thanks Adam
could you do a video on how to work and use crawfish lures. I am not sure how to work one I just retrieve them.
I’m new to fishing I own a bait caster and I just started using braid the spider brand my question is my line brings back a lot of water and make a wet mess on the whole rob to the point that it’s slippery is this normal
What braid pound do you recommend for a penn battle 2 4000 spinning reel?
What pound braid would you recommend for all around fishing
there is sinking braid that you could try....great video very instructional.
That's what is on all my spinning reels
Hey i have a question about using fluoro leader with braid main line... if i want to use 12-15lb braid, what size fluoro should i use? i'm in texas, and typically the water here is stained, rarely visibility over 3-4 foot
I tried braid with no leader caught some but lost some big bass over 10 lbs could be the just got off maybe try it again see if it will get those big ones. Good video though.
I've been using fluorocarbon leaders for a while on braid and I didn't even know it had this many advantages
Is there a big difference if I were to use a copolymer leader instead of a fluorocarbon leader?
I'm late to this video, but the tips for why to use a leader were fantastic all the same.
So which is more sensitive braid or flouro and which is the best line for Texas rigs
great tips thks
Great video good job!👍🏼😊
do you use braid with a leader on your top water too ? If so what pound braid and leader.
Question: what do you like about yellow braid?
I've moved to all braid too, love it. What braid lbs would you recommend for a med deep cranking/chatter bait set up?
I'm the pro but I do like 20lb braid to 12lbs fluro
Since mono floats, wouldn’t it be better as your connection line to hook and soft plastic so it will rise above grass or reach up to suspended bass? Same with ur beloved mojo rig?
