Hello always great content from a great family. You're inspiring! How many acres of corn for silage do you plant? How much do you use the mowers for? Lastly How many animals feed off this? Thanks
Make hay while the sun shines? Nope itta be corn.😂 Great team work to get it all done, it didn't worry me to see Young Caleb putting the corn into the shredder, for your boys that would be the greatest part of watching the stalks get cut up and pile up. Just as well your 6th sense made you act quickly and get the corn done. Sometimes the good old fashion ways and not doing it by the book works just as well. God bless
This was so awesome ! I was wondering how your late planting did . You guys sure put in a lot of hard work . I never heard of eating the corn silks before . Thanks for sharing !
This video was made last year…….. today we did it again because it worked so well!!! It makes so much more digestible food this way! We fed our cows all winter on this!
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures You did it again?? Does that mean it is cheaper to plant extra corn, harvest it early, and turn it into silage...rather than buy other kinds of fodder. (BTW - I'm not a farmer. Just curious.)
Good idea now u got good cow feed just make sure u pack it good and put a tarp over it so it dose not rote and some rocks to way down but u don't have to use a tarp but I would recommend it
We had at least 2 good frosts on our place in Waynesboro Tn. When I lived/ farmed in Illinois we put up silage after the ears filled out. Put it in silos and some on the ground. Don't see why this won't work. May not be as sweet later in the year. All you can do is give it a try.
Its a multipurpose machine ! Entertaining video...And yes it did bother me to see your youngest leaning in to feed the chipper... Good to teach them young!
That's awesome too see to me I think it's easier for them to digest it easier especially for the thick stalks sides livestock really ain't design to eat tough thick stalks which makes since. If you have ever notice of hay or pasture in general when they eat it, they only pick out the tender parts of the plants. Other than that again awesome too see corn silage making from a wood chipper..lol but it's like the old saying goes "there's a will and a way" 😂😂. P,s far as your kids, yer teaching them good enough, especially when it comes with dangerous machinery. Thanks so much brother! I’m so excited about doing this again! It worked to perfection….. and the cows ate heartily through the winter! Especially in the ice storm!!!
It would be nice if you could later on plant a field of what the Native Americans called the three sisters Corn beans and squash in the same rows and possibly fence it in and let the pigs harvest it. Im actually gonna suggest corn 🌽 pole beans, and pumpkin as a first time trial for you.
Throw oat seed all over silage pile if your not gonna cover it keeps spoilage to minimum and u can feed them rite along with the corn and better in milk than hard kernaled

If it was frosted, would that just kill it and dry it out. Is dry silage bad for cows?
It would probably become bitter and possibly toxic. It’s important to have moisture for the fermentation process as well!
