    Filling the barrel is like the story of the mule in a pit that wasn't buried, he stomped the dirt the farmer threw in until he could walk out.

    Hey Brother. Watching your channel is magical. Ferdinand keeps coming back from the dead. 😂😂😂Making barrel silage today. My ladino clover is at peak bloom and we have three days of no rain in the forecast. Keeps raining so I can’t make hay, so why not make silage. Plant any corn yet?

      @@McGieHomesteadAdventures Hey Bro. Micah. I noticed in this year’s video that you talked about moving the barrels in the shade. Should I be doing that? My pecan and fruit orchard is where I have my ladino clover planted and where I made my barrel silage. I left the barrels in the orchard in the sun. I had barrel silage up into March. The silage remained good quality I think, but I noticed the quality remained palatable and smelled “pickled”, but diminished in structure into the fall /early winter. It ended being like a sweet pickle smelling chewing tobacco. Is that because I left them out in the orchard all year? Or is that how it’s supposed to be. Remember, I’m a one man show, so I don’t want to move them if I don’t have too; but I will. Also I’m new to silage, but hooked. Let me know your thoughts.

    It is impressive when you consider that 55 gallons of water would run 460 lbs. have you tried adding in cracked corn to ferment in there as well? Kind of like what Joel Saladin does with his cow manure pack/pig compost turning.

    I made a H frame out of 2x4’s and bolted it down to the trailer. I would add the feed, and use a barn jack with a plywood dish to compress. I didn’t have the help so had to figure out an easy solution. Be careful, I went a little bit overboard and split one of the barrels.
    Works just like a tobacco press if that’s a better description.
    Good job

    Before you pack it let sit a day or two to lose moisture that way the weight stay almost the same however long you keep it and you can pack even more grass than that. I don't weight mine but that's what I do back in uganda.

    I keep thinking about trying to make a bit of silage but the jury is out if it's good for goats. Wonder if chickens will eat it, I may try it for my daughter's pigs. Is there any reason I shouldn't use 55 gal metal barrels(that's all I have available)?

    Im.wanting to try this but not sure on how good my packing akills are! Would salt and a little spring water make up for kess than jdeal packing?? Think sauerkraut making. You top it off with salt and add a little water to cover anything thats not covered and make aure theres no air and ket it ferment

    • @lookingbehind6335
      @lookingbehind6335 3 місяці тому

      I don’t think you want to add any more water. There’s plenty in the cut feed. Long as you pack it relatively tight, it should be fine. Just keep them airtight as possible.
