This was my no 1 choice for an ar style rifle, since we now are allowed to hunt with these kind of rifles in sweden. Only restrictions is 18" barrel and 5 rnds magazines. I've owned my for 2 month and i'm really pleased with it. Doing under 30mm groups at 100meters no matter what bullet. Using 185gr lapua mega, 110gr v-max and 110gr sierra hp, handloads. Running mine with surpressor that goes over the barrel with 8cm, mad dog side charger and vortex 2,5-10 scope. Insanely swift setup, 112cm total length. Never had a hickup or some sort of problem with it. In sweden these kinds of rifle has been around for sporting shooting for years but are totally new for us hunters. A true gamechanger for us who wants a light semi auto rifle thats a treat to clean and take apart, just ordered the mpr 18", takes about 6 month to get it to sweden.
So those laws have finally changed in sweden. My last memory was that you guys werent allowed to hunt with guns which were obtained by sporting reasons. In there bit more east that have been standard long as i can remember. But for us it takes bit longer active hobby to obtain sport/reservist shooter lisence if want unrestricted mags. But least barrels can go short as 11.9 inch with any rifle/shotguns. But by hunting laws all semi-automatics are limited to 2+1 or 3+1 depending your game animal. Otherwise semi-auto rifle is limited to 1+10 and pistols/revolvers to 20+1 as default if not permit for unrestristed mags.
@@Kesssuli Yes its pretty awesome, last year we had surpressors permitfree and this(last year) sloped the regulation about how a hunting rifle should look. There is a lot to talk about that but for now i've got a viking like hangover, please reply for more info😎
@@tinybladdernthickpipe5882 In here supressors could have been obtained if you had anykind of permit for firearm. Calibers didnt matter or how many you had because those arent serialized in anyway. Our biggest drawback was in 2017 when EU legistration went on and new semi-auto rifle permits could only only have those 10+1 mags if not higher class permit meant for sport/reservist shooter. And worst drawback what we have thx to Eu is that all semi-auto permits after 2019 had to be renewed after 5 years. Also today with hunting reasons you arent supposed to get permit for ar/ak style rifle. Some stations allowed those applications go trough and some denied on spot. So now they should have common policy in all stations around country. Overally those scary military style rifles are can be obtained only by sporting or reservist reasons. We always had right to use any gun to hunt no matter which legal way you have obtained it. To my understanding it is pretty much same in sweden where caliber determines what can be hunted. Im kind of looking this ruger could it be potential bigger caliber counterpart for already existing AR in .223. Only what keeps me dropping application in close future is accuracy potential which doesnt seem to be too impressive what i have seen from youtube. 1.5-3 inch groups at 90m are not exacly what im looking for to replace already existing bolt action sako 75(30-06). Just for sake of slowly replacing my guns with semi-automatics. But if have any own experiences to share about this rifle im more than willing to take notes.
@@Kesssuli What country are you in? Seems really alike swedish gun laws. Surpressors are permit free, you only have to show a valid gunlicense to buy one. No restrictions in calibre or how many you have. Magazines are permit free up to 10rounds and 10+ mags you need show a gunlicense for a gun to wich the magazine fits. To hunt with semi auto the magazines needs to be restricted to 5rounds and for bear 2rounds, pretty wierd. Im really pleased with my sfar and people on swedish forums are too. I was i little sceptic to the rifle at first due to all videos on youtube. BUT most videos are done with shitty optics, bad support and old surplus ammo, no ofense yankees😋. Not really a good way to show precision tests. I'm getting groups of ca 30mm, just over an moa att 100m but i'm not the worlds best shooter so i cant blame the rifle. So dont be scared to buy one, love the concept of a 308 in a ar15 chassie🤟 its a great rifle for the money, i really dont have any negative to say this far
@@tinybladdernthickpipe5882 Bit more to east=Finland😁 Thx to sharing your opinion about this rifle. Pretty much what i had in my mind how people in states usually have bit too many variations when they are testing accuracy potential from any gun.
I have a friend that owns one, and I have shot it myself. It is very accurate, and has shown no cycling or misfeed issues. In fact, his groups were touching each other. Very impressed.
Had feeding issues with mine. I sent it back to ruger they changed the gas block and did something to the extractor. It's been flawless with around 200rds since the repair.
What was the process like Sending it back time and money wise like shipping cost if any and do you have to go through an FFL since it’s a firearm because I think I remember them telling me that since it’s going back to the factory, it doesn’t have to be transferred, right
Almost got 1000 rounds with a single malfunction… which was likely due to ammo. Thing is awesome. Have a hard time taking the negative comments serious although I have not run it suppressed.
Mine was a single shot out of the box, wouldn't cycle the next round or lock back at all. Upon inspection, Ruger put a rifle length buffer spring in the carbine length buffer tube which caused constant short stroking. After putting carbine length spring in it's been fine.
I purchased a 20” model. It was factory set on position 3. I cycled 250 round as set flawlessly. Alternating 7.62/308 about even. After I reliably ran setting 2 with a lot less off gassing. Wonderful rifle. Only issue from factory. The hand guard was loose and slipped after the first several shots. Tightened up no biggie.
Well done. So glad you got it. Very good to see yours reliable. Mine has not had any issues at all. I am under 300 rounds of mostly M80. I have run around 60 308....30 Win Power Point 150 & around 30 155 match handloads with near max Varget, both of which were MOA. In fact the Power Point was so good I chose to just use it for hunting this year and harvested a nice 9 point at 70-75 yards. My 12 year old son was getting 2.5" groups at 125 yards with Power Point & 3"-4" with M80. I have a Redfield Revolution 3-9x on it.
800+rds so far with mine. With a mixture of Federal Power Shok 150gr, Norma Whitetail 150gr and Winchester Whitebox 149gr. Been flawless on gas setting 3 and 2. Love mine!
I’ve had mine for close to 3 years with close to 1000 rounds in it, mix of both 308 and 7.62x51, I installed an Apollo max muzzle brake with an h2 buffer had two malfunctions with the first mag after installing other than that no issues with it, amazing 308 platform
Just now seeing this review, 5 months after the fact. I've had my SFAR for 1 year. I have right around 800+ rounds though it. During the first 20 rounds I had 1 failure to extract and 2 failures to feed. I pulled the BCG, lightly cleaned and lubricated and ran another 40 rounds with no issues. I made it a habbit to clean and lube the BCG after shooting. I've been running LAX Ammo 147 gr since day one. I saw LAX had reman 308 147 gr so I picked up 200 rounds. I was running this reman ammo when I had my first "oh poop" malfunction. I had a primer cap pop out and it caused the bolt to lock in the closed position. I cannot fault Ruger for that.I got that figured out and ran another 60 roounds through it. My SFAR came wiith the gas setting on 3 and I have not changed it. Shells are landing between 2 and 3 o'clock. I am waiting for the range to dry out and I will put my Sandman on it and see how if goes. I am waitng for the tax stamp on a Ventum 762. That will be the main can for that rifle. Did your rifle come with that much oil on it or did you lubricate it before shooting the video??
Got mine almost a year ago. It came on gas setting 2 and ran flawless. I recently put a Rugged Alaskan 360 surpressor on it and left the gas on 2 and it still runs flawlessly. I had it zeroed at 100 yds and the surpressor changed that 2 1/2 in left and down 2 1/2 in down. You're right about the stock but changed it immediately and with a nice pad on it. I've seen one guy reviewed one twice and knocked the hell out of it both times, so he is obviously told to do that but also had a bucket of old Un named ammo so who knows. I hunt hogs with it with a TH50 V2 512 iray scope and love this rifle especially the weight even with the large scope. Thanks for an honest review and you're right about the power point ammo . Mine likes Barnes vortex and federal gold.
I think this gun was purposely sh*t all over when it came out. People intentionally trashing it, and making it look bad. A lot of popular channels acting like they’ve never operated a gun before… People not properly inspecting the gun before use to check for obvious issues, (assembly things) like factory debris of any sort or other dumb things like usual. First thing you do with any gun, especially one of this caliber, is fully disassemble it, cleaned, lubed and inspected. People playing with the gas regulator, and buffer weights right out of the box. Like if the thing doesn’t cycle on 2, turn it up to 3… Also anyone thinking a battle rifle should drive tacks is a m*ron… A battle rifle needs to hit a silhouette… that’s your target, not a 1” dot. Nice honest review! 👍🏻
I recently picked up a SFAR and harvested a deer with it this past hunting season. Much easier to carry than the AR-10 308. I sighted in a Sig BuckMaster 3-12x44 using Hornady ELD Match 168GR. I ran a box through the rifle and was getting consistent groupings in the 1.3 MOA range @ 100 yds. I do like the trigger but will be dropping in a Rise trigger this spring. Changed over to what I was going to use for the deer hunt (Federal Non-Typical Whitetail 150GR.) and sent 3 5-shot groups down range. As expected, bullet impact was off from the ELD Match zero but was in the 2 MOA neighborhood No issues with the SFAR at all. Really liking this firearm. I ran some dynamic drills with a Vortex Strike Eagle LPVO, using Federal American Eagle FMJ at various ranges (25-100 yds.) and did not have a single issue. Current round count: 550. Out of the box, the SFAR is pretty damn awesome, in my humble option.
A comprehensive review of a fine product. Everything you need, and want to know about the gun. That makes you someone to listen to, and learn about all the details from for me. THANKS FOR YOUR FINE EFFORT.
After running 99 rounds through mine (all reloads) at setting 3, I’ve had 8 feeding issues in three shooting sessions. I cleaned and lubricated the bolt carrier group after each session of 33 rounds and do notice some metal cutting on the brass necks and some damaged rims. I discarded that brass because it can result in extraction failure. The ejector springs are very stiff as well. I think the gas problems are a timing issue caused by a combination of buffer and spring being mismatched to the amount of gas being let through at setting three to run the bolt. I will try setting two next time and see if that works better. The bolt carrier group needs to be well lubricated and it’s advisable to tight the gas block attachment screws to at least 35 inch pounds to prevent leakage. I’ve had no gas leak in this area so far. Mine shoots 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with 168 to 178 grain bullets and has the 16 inch barrel and is unsuppressed. Good enough for hunting at reasonable ranges. Wouldn’t bet my life on it as a battle rifle so far though!
This is sad that people are still having issues with the SFAR. Ruger needs to get their act together. They have a solid reputation on most of their firearms except AR style rifles.
Gas block setting are 0, 1, 2, and 3. 0 the gun doesn’t cycle, 1 is for suppressors, 2 is for everyday shooting after break in and 3 will run all ammunition, but not recommended by Ruger after break in. You said you were testing right out of the box on setting 2! Your video taking the gun out of the box shows gas block on setting 3! Was gas block on setting 2 or 3 is my question?
The thing I have noticed is that .308 16" barrel does prefer heavier bullets. I use Nosler 165gr BTHP for my 1-2 inch groups. I am not so worried about small MOA groups using a .308 cartridges.
I had about 500 rounds through mine over the summer, all suppressed and didn't have a problem, fast forward to this winter and it wouldn't work at all with the can on. Without it on, it worked great, came back the following weekend with said can and it worked just fine idk what to make of it lol to be fair, I tried the suppressor on a different 308 and it was doing the same exact thing, so it's not necessarily the rifles but the atmospheric conditions with the can perhaps. I've never had any problems before
Page 43 of the Owners Manual states the Break In period to be 100 - 200 rounds. Also states "Most commercial ammunition will cycle optimally on setting “2,” which is an ideal starting point when first shooting the rifle with new ammunition, unsuppressed." I just ordered a 20" SFAR in 308 and am anxious to try it out.
Looks like 56,000+ have been made. The issues are not stopping Ruger from cranking these things out. Weird yours was shipped on gas setting 2. I have an early 13,000 model & it came shipped on gas setting 3??? I think they are getting this rifle dialed in. Yours is working great. Thanx for the very informative vid! 👍 Awesome
@@mrgrump2534 I'm going off the serial # stamped on the lower receiver. I assume Ruger started at #1. Mines a 13,000 range #. I know a guy that just got a 16" in the 55,000 range.
@mrgrump2534 the first 3 are model # like 563 is 16" SFAR in .308. If you have only 4 digits after that then yours was one of 9,999 made before they made the 10,000th one or 5 digits.
@@dabears52501 no it’s in the 563-38*** so maybe i got lucky and my gas system will be fine but to be honest I’ll probably eventually put a different adjustable gas block on it. I’m just trying to find all the information on doing that before I jump into that pool because I want more adjustment because of all the different 308 out there… I went into this thousand dollar purchase knowing that it couldn’t be the end all be all for that price and that I would end up building on it. I mean honestly any AR platform that I buy I end up changing up something but I can see how It could be frustrating for somebody who doesn’t have that kind of income to blow on hobbies if they bought it to just throw a red dot/lpvo on it and run and gun with it… I guess that’s one good thing about Ruger Customer Service, they will get it right no matter how many times it takes them lol, and I would assume that after five or six times if they still couldn’t get it right they would replace if they end up having some kind of updated part(s) and or a newer generation SFAR or something of that nature. I’ve heard a lot of good satisfaction stories about Ruger Customer Service guarantees so that was one of the reasons that I jumped the gun as well knowing that I would be in good hands if something did go wrong just like PSA and even BCM
I love mine! But I’ve had some issues, mainly gas issues but did end up with an ejector issue too which I showed in my last SFAR video. Ruger was great to deal with and sent me new parts, so I’ll have an update video soon. Ruger can only improve on these…I did see they released a 20” 6.5 Creed recently.
Hold up how the fuck did you get them to send you parts? I can’t even get them to send me the new gas valve even though that’s regular maintenance… they told me I had to send it back to them but I’m pretty sure that it’s free to ship back to them correct and I also don’t have to transfer it out of my name since it’s going in for work right?
Alright I just weighed my Springfield Saint Victor .308 AR-10. It came in at 9.7 pounds with a 2.5x10 optic w/laser and a Magpul MLOC traverse bipod. It also has a few ounces of front hand guard MLOC shield covers and kant mounted Springfield iron sights. The sights came with the rifle. The aluminum not plastic mounts were also added to the weight. So my battle rifle comes in at a whopping 9.7 pounds. That doesn't include any of the three magazines I keep the stock 20x2 the added 25x3 and 50x1 drum. Those bullets weigh a lot well at least until you shoot them up. Oh yeah the rifle came in a AR-10 style ATAC bag with two pockets for magazines. Just saying 🎉
I've followed reviews for this rifle heavily for almost a year now. Gassing issues are the number one thing I've seen, with a couple other instances of the one carrier gas key coming loose. Not that stoked its a YSF fastener. I really think Ruger ought to add in a couple more settings to the gas regulator. I think the three is just limiting them to much. Ruger defiantly needs to step up quality control just across the board to.
Yeah it seems from the research Ive done on this before getting my own is the gas adjustment. I think it could lend itself to having a better gas block installed with more adjustment. With that said as long as mine is reliable Im not messing with it lol. Thanks for watching.
@@TheHideI called them after my purchase and they mailed me a gen 2 gas regulator and that made an ok rifle a good one for me. I also tuned it with heavier buffers.
They replaced my bcg bc gas key wasn't right along w barrel and gas block and its still doing same shit...tearing up the back of brass cases...also my cam pin is getting pretty beat up
@@Gmny1MOAThat is SAD!.....This definately tells me that I'd be better off buying a BCA, Great Lake, or a PSA AR-10 and save $$$ for a decent optic and/.or ammo. Ruger relying on its "name" to charge more. Too bad there's no real standardization in the AR-10 platform like AR-15.. I'd rather have a Ruger Bolt-Action over this...For hunting accuracy.
Swap gas block with aero percision adjustable gas block and throw in a stiffer extractor spring . Mine ran like shit even with updated gas regulator . Thing shoots money after swapping the gas block and extractor spring .
I tested my 20" SFAR for the first time yesterday. Not deal conditions as it winter, snow and cold here, so the thick jacket made it a bit difficult to get good shouldering. I couldn't get better groups than 2.5 MOA at 100 meters, despite trying 3 different factory loads. I fired about 70 rounds in total, so it's technicaly not broken in. That could also be a factor of course. But I agree with the reviewer about the MOE buttstock and the handguard. I think there is too much flex in both, plus its clearly visible that the gas block is in contact with the handguard on my sample. I will most likely change out the buttstock for a magpul PRS light, and the handguard for something with more internal space, to see if it aids the accuracy bit, if I do my part behind the gun🙂
If it's Ruger, it's solid. Best company for qality, price, after purchase help.I am retired, don't work for them, I am reporting my experience, have a Ruger LCP, NINE MM. I own others that every American needs now.Ruger did things, like fix my gun for free, when I dropped it, and offered to pay for repair.
I bought the SFAR last year and had been having the same issues with malfunctions as everyone else. I contacted Ruger and they sent me an upgraded gas regulator and since I installed the new gas regulator I've had one failure to pick up an M80 ball round in about 350 rounds. And I've had zero failures with .308. I shot it today and it is so sweet now. I also rented a Sig and SCAR 7.62 and the Ruger was much nicer to shoot.
Everything Im seening sfar prefer 165-168g for best accuracy results Upgrades rifle speed gas block Bigger diameter quad rail/ inch shorter then original to compensate for upgraded gas block
Thanks for the review. I think that I will stick to the 6.5 grendel in a straight AR15 rifle considering accuracy and recoil issues with that ruger .308 AR style rifle. Often to insure functioning in gas operated rifles, the guns are setup to be over gassed. At $1329 suggested retail price, I expect better accuracy from a cold gun. Maybe once it warms up it might hold a zero. i would opt out for the 20 barrel and remove that muzzle break. But I will likely pass on it.
I don't feel the recoiled as noticeably anymore then 556 in this rifle. I have shot it both unsursuppressed and with an Omega suppressor with no issues. I paid 958 for mine. As for accuracy nothing I will shoot at requires more then minute of man. This is far more accurate then that. Far more accurate then I am.
I have 4 308 rifles 1 Savage 110 tac 24 inch a Savage axis wood stock a Ruger American and a BCA10 with 20 inch barrel all 1-10 twist. They all shoot 165's 1 1/4 at a 100 or better with factory ammo even the Winchester. I load the 178 ELD-X for the Savage tac and BCA10 1/4 groups at a 100 the other 2 get the 165 SST and shoot 1/2 groups at a 100.
Read the manual. Says to run the gas system on as you say setting #4 for minimum of I believe 300 rnds before adjusting the gas block. I did that and had no issues whatsoever
Soon as they came out I wanted one due to being 62 with shoulder problems that made it hard holding up most heavy AR10 platforms, along with the low cost compared to the POF. I already had a Diamondback 308 with 13.5” barrel being it was about as front heavy as I could handle, so this was just what I needed. After seeing some had problems mostly from the gas blocks I waited on it a bit for Ruger to sort it out. Last week I finally bought one of the 20” models. Decided on the longer one just because of it still being so light and had the rifle length location of gas block just inside the hand guard along with full picarinny on top. Haven’t had the chance to shoot it yet but looking forward to it. Thanks for the review!
Like this review. I was setting here thinking about how much money those 100 rounds cost. Maybe I’ll stop thinking about that stuff. I don’t have a 308 anymore where I live now nothing to shoot. Precision like you said is a question.. I’ll be following. 😊
The PA microprisms are a solid choice, and I LOVE the 3x. I am finding myself putting them on more and more rifles. I like them better than the 4X ACOG.
Like you I've wanted a SFAR since I first heard about them. like others, I have followed reviews on said platform. it seems lack of quality control, is the biggest issue. along with gassing issues. however they seem to be more hit and miss for properly functioning Ruger SFAR''s I still want one. I might wait and see if Ruger, is going to do a gen 2 SFAR. fixing issues, and upgrading the platform, without raising the price! Unless I can find a maybe good used lower priced Ruger SFAR maybe at a gun show or pawn shop, but I would love to have a new SFAR fresh out of the box. There's no better feeling at least to me than a new firearm fresh out of the packaging
Yeah I went back n forth so many times on getting one but Im glad that I did. One thing I kept telling myself was that Ruger does have the best customer service in the business so I used that to ease my mind a little. Granted i guess I got lucky so far with the reliability but I will be doing an update on this rifle in a month or so. Thanks for watching!!
@@TheHide you didn’t get lucky it’s just a very popular rifle so every little detail is being magnified when there’s a problem… and like you said their customer, service and warranty is great
There’s not going to be a “GEN 2” because there is no problems with the design they have now! some rifles have ben sent out with loose parts but that’s on the owner for not checking it before shooting like u should always do and for the gassing issue that’s mostly people not cleaning all the Cosmo out at first or breaking them in on setting three like you’re supposed to… if they were to redesign it and put out a second generation, they would literally have to give everyone that bought the first generation the updated model and that would cost too much so the best we are gonna get is an updated gas block or gas valve like they already did once with the gas valve. The reason I know is because I talked to customer service department about the gassing issue almost a year ago and they told me they were doing the gas valve update before it was even released and that turned out to be true so why would they all of a sudden now turn around and make a whole new rifle? like I said, I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one and if I were you, I would just go ahead and buy one now and if you have any problems after break in just send it in for service… it’s really that simple you’re overthinking it! I mean we’re talking about a low budget lightweight ar10 platform to begin with anyway so it’s not that involved or into pocket anyway, shit I spend almost that much every other month on ammo and target equipment like tanerite and steel targets 😂… there really is no room for poors in this hobby no offense. Also, if money is not the object, just go get a POF revolution or rogue although they also have quality control issues from time to time they’re not perfect either this is literally a new design that’s why it’s so lightweight so it’s naturally gonna have growing pains and if you ask me for a company like Ruger to take this kind of initiative and making something like this, I’m surprised it doesn’t have even more problems
When troops were in Afghanistan i bet most would prefer that to a 556 foresure. With a 6 lb rifle there is no way i hell i would ever choose 556 over a 6 lb 308...if the 308 was reliable.
Mine was a turd and went back 3 times. Failure to eject, stuck cases in the upper so bad i had to use a screwdriver, metal chips from the bolt/feed ramp in lower, throwing the charging handle back at my face, acting over gassed, then coming back undergassed, then coming back again way over gassed.. Still shoots the charging handle back at my face unless I use their charging handle, but after over 1000 rounds and a h3 buffer seems to be running well with perfect ejection with both 7.62 & 308. Watch though, because I said that it'll start having failures to eject again. Like my tavor 7 more.
Was thinking I should have gotten one of these instead of my 716i (was not out yet though). After seeing so many problems with the sfar I am glad I did not.
Far as accuracy, try checking if your gas block is connecting with the hand guard. It’ll hinder it a little. I found with mine the barrel nut was way… over torqued. Something else to check. Getting 1.5 moa on avg, 100 yard indoor range. Winchester m80 ball. Mine will open up quite a bit after 25-30 rounds. It likes to be cold.
Great review! You test/evaluate a firearm as it should be without massive stuff attached to the rifle such as suppressors/LVPO's and some other expensive attachments. I just hope others who test/evaluate a firearm would do the same and keep testing simple....😃😃😃
@@valiant545 First find out how the firearm works prior to attaching scopes, lights and other upgrades, the rifle may not work and need to go back to the manufacturer as many Ruger SFAR have functioning issues which is undeniable....😖😖
@@valiant545Michael has explained VERY well already Smart Ass...WHY you check out the rifle before-hand loading it up with accessories...Especially with a rifle that has MOA issues not to mention reliability probs. I'm going to be BLUNT!. SIt DOWN, STFU, and LEARN SOMETHING!.
Hello, This is the first time I have run across your site. Thanks for this. I have been looking for someone to get one of these that this rifle did not just turn out to be a pile. Nice to see about the blow back issue and the issue with getting heat and gunk on the left hand holding the gun steady/ouch/ouch ect as well as the gas adjustments meaning something as described by other reviews. I think the gas issue has been the issue all along. Also was glad to see some level of accuracy for hunting purposes and I think it could be better with temp control, 3 round groups cold and hot as well as hunting rounds run through to find the sweet spot ammo :) Really enjoyed the side hack mechanical sites, so good I've not seen this before. I've almost put this rifle in the willing to take the risk box. Man gotta love the weight on this puppy. Two birds with one stone on the .308 issue :) Thanks again and looking forward to the next, :)
Thats where I was at with it. For the weight and the price I was willing to take a chance. So far its been good to go but im planning an update part 2 to this one. Im still glad i got it and no plans of getting rid of it. Appreciate you watching!!
I tested out two diffrent brands of 150 gr 308 in my 20 inch barrel. One had an energy of about 1933 ft-lbs the other had and endergy of 2675 ft-lbs. You can not cover such large variations in 308 with just 3 or 4 gas settings. Not even talk about supressors variations here that further complicate things. One screw holding the gas key is not a great idea either. We need a Gen 2.
You do realize it’s not just the one screw it’s also recessed into that cavity slightly just like the POF revolution which is the 2400 dollar rifle Ruger got this short frame idea from… it also has the one screw in its gas key due to the size just like Ruger. it’s not like they both didn’t wanna put another screw in there dude, there’s just no room for it.🤦♂️
I would get the 20 inch, hopefully the gas problems are not with that length, I would also use a suppressor, my ruger ar15 is very loud, I will be getting a suppressor for it as well. Looks like a nice semi 30 cal rifle, I will probably get one.
Looking to pick up one of these in the 20 inch for a dmr setup. Currently have the ruger mpr 16 inch ar15 and it’s been amazing. Never had any issues and probably put over 2000 rounds through mine. Been a super enjoyable gun and really impressed what tiger offers for the price. Excited to pick up on of these here soon. Heard about gas issues which can be fixed with a different gas block, few said upgrade the buffer tube and bolt carrier group aswell for no issues.
I have the 16" version to so far no problems just not as accurate as id like i loaded some 168 amax just to shoot and it shot just under a inch at 100 but i cant remember the powder go figure i love mine so far and im not gonna change the trigger either its nice.thank you bro fer the video keep em coming
If i get one im most likely just going to put on a superlative arms adjustable gas block. Just fine tune it perfectly and most of the problems with it seem to be from the factory gas block.
I have had mine for a little over a year, several hindered rounds with zero issues. There are 4 settings for the gas regulator. Adjust those settings to match the ammo you are shooting. IMO there aren't reliability issues just folks that do not know how to properly work the firearm. Ruger has some great tech tip videos on UA-cam.
I bought a dpms g2 and a larue predatar. Both light weight 308. If I was you the first thing I would do to that rifle is put a new Barrel on it. Even though my DPMS G2 was sub Moa with my hand loads I still decided to take the barrel off and put on a bartlein barrel from Paul Craddock. I went with a 1 and 12 twist and it shoots lights out with everything from 155 eld all the way up to 175 Sierra match Kings
Yeah I'm not sure what the future holds for this one but I will say I do like the rifle. so far Ive been lucky with he reliability from what others have said. However I have been gathering higher grain weight ammo for a part 2 precision test. We will see how that does. With that said for this rifles intended use the accuracy is fair imo. Its not made to be a precision rig.. Thanks for watching.
My SFAR out had jams, feeding issues. Gas system was not torqued correctly from Ruger, sad. Replaced Gas block, tightened all Gas plumbing lines. Shooting reliable now.
I am looking forward to more range visits and updates. I haven't tried mine on setting #2 as recommended by Ruger. I am curious how yours does on setting #2 with full power 308 loads. I am not terribly interested in suppressed. Thank you much. Enjoy.
Waited for ruger to make sfar in 6.5 creedmoor. Bought one has fired to rounds and locked up. Rifle was cleaned and oiled before firing. Gas block was on 2 finally ejected the empty changed block to 3 same results after 1 round to big for a paper weight to small for a boat anchor. Changed gas blocks, buffer springs and buffers same problem.
Got mine back in June of this year, no problems with mine shooting Tulammo as long as I leave it on 3. I am a light weight addict when it comes to my rifles, I have made a couple of changes to the rifle and have it down to a little over 5.9 pounds without any optics. Here's the changes I have made so far: 1. Foward assist delete 2. Change over to a MFT Minimalist stock 3. Changed the factory regulator over to an Aero Percision adjustable gas block 4. Changed out the factory handguard and barrel nut to a Dark Hour Defense 11" handguard. I have a Smoke Composites buffer tube on the way and I am debating a couple different muzzle devices that should remove half the weight of the factory muzzle device. For an optic I have a Vortex Spitfire 5x prizm with a Monstrum tactical Raven pistol red dot sight attached.
Thank you for your review and testing. Did you by chance inspect your fired brass cases for marks and abrasions? My 308 Winchester SFAR with 20" barrel leaves cuts and imprints on the brass face. Furthermore, there are flakes of brass found in the bolt face and surrounding area. I have confirmed that the adjustable gas port is on number 2. Note that I have had NO jams during firing. Accuracy started off at about 1.5" for first 20 rounds or so, but more recently it has dropped off to be in the 2" to 2.5" range. I have cleaned the barrel and action after every 5 rounds, for the first 20 rounds, then after approximately every 20 rounds (just in case a dirty barrel was causing too much back pressure). I have up to 63 rounds through the rifle as of this time. I will fire it to a total of 200 rounds and then return to Ruger if the issue does not correct itself. Based on reviews below, it does sound like this issue is not common to all SFAR rifles.
Dang no kidding about the brass? This one is typical gas impingement AR brass. Dirty with a dent from the shell deflector. Thats crazy yours looked like that Ill definitely keep my eye on it. Appreciate ya watching..
The accuracy issues that you're talking about for the POU are not a significant issue. US military rifle standards allow 3.5 MOA for the service rifle. You indicate the rifle would be for casual and possibly tactical use. That is more than exceptable. As you also pointed out it's not built to be a SASS, it would make a decent DMR with it's features.
just a comment i dont see how the the gas system can effect the accuracy of the rifle its more like the ammo used , i would gather in most AR platforms?
I think the less you tinker and twiddle with these guns, the better your reliability. I really liked the premise of the SFAR when it first came out. AR-10 power and decent accuracy with AR-15 size and weight. Then I spent so much time agonizing over which one to buy, the 308 vs 6.5 Creedmoor, the 16" vs the 20"... It was classic analysis paralysis. Watched so many videos. Some positive, some negative. Finally, I decided to buy two, the 308 in 16" and the 6.5 CM in 20". Figured for the price of an expensive AR-15, I can have two SFARs with different specs to try. Give these guys GOOD, high BC rounds to eat and your accuracy will improve. I prefer Hornady Black 168gr A-Max (not cheap, but good). I don't get MOA. Not consistently. 2 MOA is more like it. I don't shoot suppressed and I set gas to 2 after 100 rounds at 3. FYI, mine came from the factory with gas set to 3.
I will say this about that. I did have to adjust my adjustable gas block to get the rifle to cycle properly. Some joker who put it together that it would be so comical to leave the gas needle and seat wide open. To explain that very little gas to that large BCG no push the bolt back. The date thing wouldn't even unlock. Single shot nightmare. Thanks for that one buddy!
I don't care what your application is, any rifle i own including a battle rifle needs to be shooting smaller groups than 2 inches. There's no reason a rifle shouldn't be able to get smaller than 2 inches with good ammo. Period.
I'm the same way. I have no use for a rifle that won't shoot moa. Although, I have to be a tad more tolerant to the AR platform. I'm speaking more to the bolt guns.
I know we are incredibly spoiled by the proliferation of AR-15's, but they do not have "normal" accuracy for a semia automatic rifle. AR-15's are extremely unique in how accurate they are. 2" for literally any other semi auto rifle on the planet is still FANTASTIC. 4-6" groupings is VERY AVERAGE for most other semi autos. You have unrealistic expectations man
??? Another AR15 fanboy I take it? Yeah because Marines, soldiers, and cops take the time to bench-rest during a firefight to ensure sub-moa groupings while suppression and and advancement movements are tossed out. It's a battle rifle dude, 2 inch groups will put ISIS fighters and wannabe tacticool nerds in the dirt just fine.
Definitely going to be looking into it a bit more. Im planning on getting this rifle back on the range in the coming week or two and seeing how it does.. Thanks for watching..
Sounds like the gas needs to be opened up for the ammo circulation issue . My SPRINGFIELD SAINT EDGE 556 did not like WINCHESTER ROUNDS until it was all the way open. The scopes must be off for groups 3" out. I can hit a quarter size mark from 100 yds with a 1x RED DOT , shooting a 556 . It has to be the scope !
I saw this rifle tested and I wasn’t impressed. It has a break in off 200 rounds and right in the middle of the field test it started jamming. The muzzle break is very loud.
Hi, I wish you would have mentioned the Twist Rate. I definitely think that the 150 Grain Rounds were too light for this Rifle. I would have started out with around 180 Grain Loads, but that would all depend on the Twist Rate. I thought it was a Great looking Rifle, but if that’s the best it will Group, I’ll Pass.
I love it. Saving up for mine now. Only change I think I’m going to do it swap the stock maybe try a LuthAR with adjustable LOP and cheek rest and a better muzzle break. Want to keep it light so maybe a lpvo or just a 4x prism with a 45* red dot and that’s it….plus a custom camo paint job lol. Vertical grip too but that’s it. I built my own AR10 w/20” barrel and if people only knew the difficulty with getting them to run reliably with good accuracy. It’s a pain in the @$$ let me tell y’all, just get this SFAR and be done with it. 💯 I installed a timney 2 stage AR10/15 trigger and it would not function properly at all, hammer follow almost every shot. Had to go back to a factory one. Changed the buffer and spring to find the right combo it liked. Adjustable gas block as well. Won’t work with p mags either, never could get them to function. That being said once she was all done and gtg I love her.
Why would anybody buy a gun that didn't work reliably until 200 rnds? My Stag 10 has zero malfunctions for around 900 rnds of different ammo. Ruger failed on this rifle.
My first AR gun only had handgun before pretty new noob here I had shot around 150 ammo and gas setting is set to 2 from factory I got the 16 inch should I change it gas setting to 3 or leave it at 2? I did had some shell stuck with 150g Hornady superformance but it did great with federal ammo thanks for the help
BUYER BEWARE: if you decide to purchase a SFAR, it’s hit or miss whether you receive a fully functional, reliable rifle. Regrettably, I did not, even after several return back to Ruger. Only after update the buffer to an H3 and running very wet, did I get any reliability. But for a $1100 rifle, I shouldn’t have to spend that much time and effort to get it to work. I would be wary of any AR-10 platform costing less than $2000, too many just don’t have the reliability of the AR-15. I still want a .308 semi-auto rifle, but I will save my coin for a Galil ACE or SCAR.
Ive had a ton on the channel that have been more than reliable for a lot less than that money in the larger AR10/DPMS platform. Undoubtedly with this being a new design from Ruger there would be some hicups. I would say after this run of rifles they will get it lined out. However I guess so far I just got lucky on this one. But I wanted the low weight that this rifle offered so it definitely checks that box. Thanks for watching..
Interesting results. You should have shot a few more groups with the ones that shot really bad. The first group is over 3", because that one shot was high, into the target backer. You also wanted guys to comment about the Winchester power point ammo, it generally shoots well in my rifles. As you know, others mileage may vary. The rifle in your video, shows it's reliable for the small bit we saw. That is great, because other reports show it as sort of unreliable. With the lighter frame/receiver, I would not expect it to be a "precision" type rifle. Those that are wanting their sub 7 pound AR10, to be a "precision" rifle, may be in for a huge disappointment. Do a search on these rifles, they are not known to be excellent shooters. However, the lightweight features are a draw, if you plan on packing it around and hunting with it. If guys are like me, I demand my rifles to be 100% reliable when hunting them. Would this rifle make the cut for me? Probably not. To be perfectly honest.. Thanks for the video though. It confirms what others have been getting downrange on target, with these SFAR's.
I picked up a 20" last year only ran a few rds through it as a function test. I can't decide on a scope for it.. i tried putting a prs light stock on it, but it wouldn't fit. I prefer a non Collapsible stock on a 308.
Nothing wrong with a non collapsible. If youre wanting that just go with an A2. Going with some of the others you run the risk of adding unneeded weight to the platform which may defeat its purpose unless youre using it as more of a bench rifle. Thanks for watching.
@TheHide ... the PRS light stock is lighter than an A2 ... the A2 won't fit on the sfar because of the castle nut . I'll run it with the Collapsible stock. I think if I do some trimming on the buffer tube I can get the PRS to work but I'm not that worried about it.
Hi, neighbor new to your channel, I'm from Michigan. I'm looking to buy one of the two, the one you have Ruger 308 or the Smith& Wesson M&P 308. I here a lot of 2 issues with the Ruger 308 the Gas Chamber and it's finicky with what ammo you put through it. What I would like you to do if possible is to video the Ruger 308 everytime you take it out shooting please thank you can't wait to your next video ciao for now bro.
After the lower grain ammunition I ran 180gr ammunition in it and it ran flawlessly. I'm not sure what is wrong with it. Any help you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
This was my no 1 choice for an ar style rifle, since we now are allowed to hunt with these kind of rifles in sweden.
My last memory was that you guys werent allowed to hunt
with guns which were obtained by sporting reasons. In there bit more east that have been standard long
as i can remember. But for us it takes bit longer active hobby to obtain sport/reservist shooter
lisence if want unrestricted mags. But least barrels can go short as 11.9 inch with any rifle/shotguns.
But by hunting laws all semi-automatics are limited to 2+1 or 3+1 depending your game animal.
Otherwise semi-auto rifle is limited to 1+10 and pistols/revolvers to 20+1 as default if not
permit for unrestristed mags.
@@Kesssuli
Yes its pretty awesome, last year we had surpressors permitfree and this(last year) sloped the regulation about how a hunting rifle should look. There is a lot to talk about that but for now i've got a viking like hangover, please reply for more info😎
@@tinybladdernthickpipe5882 In here supressors could have been obtained if you had anykind
of permit for firearm. Calibers didnt matter or how many you had because those arent
serialized in anyway. Our biggest drawback was in 2017 when EU legistration went on
and new semi-auto rifle permits could only only have those 10+1 mags if not
higher class permit meant for sport/reservist shooter.
And worst drawback what we have thx to Eu is that all semi-auto permits
after 2019 had to be renewed after 5 years.
Also today with hunting reasons you arent supposed to get permit for ar/ak style rifle.
Some stations allowed those applications go trough and some denied on spot.
So now they should have common policy in all stations around country.
Overally those scary military style rifles are can be obtained only by sporting
or reservist reasons.
We always had right to use any gun to hunt no matter which legal way
you have obtained it. To my understanding it is pretty much same in sweden
where caliber determines what can be hunted.
Im kind of looking this ruger could it be potential bigger caliber counterpart
for already existing AR in .223. Only what keeps me dropping application
in close future is accuracy potential which doesnt seem to be too impressive
what i have seen from youtube.
1.5-3 inch groups at 90m are not exacly what im looking for to
replace already existing bolt action sako 75(30-06). Just for sake of
slowly replacing my guns with semi-automatics.
But if have any own experiences to share about this rifle im more than
willing to take notes.
@@Kesssuli
What country are you in?
@@tinybladdernthickpipe5882 Bit more to east=Finland😁
Thx to sharing your opinion about this rifle.
Great to hear, thanks for watching!!
Had feeding issues with mine. I sent it back to ruger they changed the gas block and did something to the extractor. It's been flawless with around 200rds since the repair.
Glad they got you squared away! Thanks for watching..
What was the process like Sending it back time and money wise like shipping cost if any and do you have to go through an FFL since it’s a firearm because I think I remember them telling me that since it’s going back to the factory, it doesn’t have to be transferred, right
@@mrgrump2534 ruger pays for all fees, shipping and everything. no ffl required to sent it back and they ship right back to your house..
Almost got 1000 rounds with a single malfunction… which was likely due to ammo. Thing is awesome. Have a hard time taking the negative comments serious although I have not run it suppressed.
Same with mine.. thanks for watching
Mine was a single shot out of the box, wouldn't cycle the next round or lock back at all. Upon inspection, Ruger put a rifle length buffer spring in the carbine length buffer tube which caused constant short stroking. After putting carbine length spring in it's been fine.
@@benthere404 sounds like you got one made on a Monday.
@@brotherbrovet1881 I’ve had that luck with most of my rugers, good thing I like to tinker 🙄
Thanks for sharing!!
Awesome thanks for the info.
Seems like all of Rugers AR platform rifles have better accuracy with heavier rounds.
That's why they use a heavy barrel
Enjoy a honest review. Thank you for time and effort.

A lot of popular channels acting like they’ve never operated a gun before…
People not properly inspecting the gun before use to check for obvious issues, (assembly things) like factory debris of any sort or other dumb things like usual. First thing you do with any gun, especially one of this caliber, is fully disassemble it, cleaned, lubed and inspected.
People playing with the gas regulator, and buffer weights right out of the box. Like if the thing doesn’t cycle on 2, turn it up to 3…
Also anyone thinking a battle rifle should drive tacks is a m*ron…
A battle rifle needs to hit a silhouette… that’s your target, not a 1” dot. Nice honest review! 👍🏻
I purchased mine in August 2023. I have the 20" barrell. I have a bipod and a Tomahawk Swampfox Scope 1-8x24 30mm tube. Have not had any issues.

Just got mine the other day and haven't had time to shoot it yet. Nice review. Thanks.
Awesome, let us know how it does!
Well I just bought this exact same rifle and excited thanks for the comments guys and thanks to look for
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it.
the Failure to Feed issue might be caused by people not cleaning off the storage oil before first use... many people don't like reading the manual.
Its possible...
The thing I have noticed is that .308 16" barrel does prefer heavier bullets. I use Nosler 165gr BTHP for my 1-2 inch groups. I am not so worried about small MOA groups using a .308 cartridges.
Im definitely gonna get some heavier weight projectile ammo try and see if it makes a difference. Stay tuned !!
Well yes, Armalite even made a 1:11 1/4 twist rate to help with lighter loads

I had about 500 rounds through mine over the summer, all suppressed and didn't have a problem, fast forward to this winter and it wouldn't work at all with the can on. Without it on, it worked great, came back the following weekend with said can and it worked just fine idk what to make of it lol to be fair, I tried the suppressor on a different 308 and it was doing the same exact thing, so it's not necessarily the rifles but the atmospheric conditions with the can perhaps. I've never had any problems before
Page 43 of the Owners Manual states the Break In period to be 100 - 200 rounds. Also states "Most commercial ammunition will cycle optimally on setting “2,” which is an ideal starting point when first shooting the rifle with new ammunition, unsuppressed."
I just ordered a 20" SFAR in 308 and am anxious to try it out.

Just saying
🎉
Some of my AR15 rigs weigh 9.6, but in fairness, those have heavy duty barrels and of course optics, lights.
@@paolosasso2189 Yes I don't doubt that. I was using my AR-10 as my example.
@@bmrz38 with all the issues they were having the first 6-8 months they didn’t upgrade and ship new guns with Gen 2 gas regulator???
Mine was iffy at first, but I chucked the original gas regulator and gas tube for an AR-15 AGB and stainless steel gas tube. Its run flawless since.
Wich one, thinking of going aero adjustable
Thats great to hear they took care of you! That's good to know. I may see if I can get them to send me one to just have it lol. Thanks for watching!
Everything Im seening sfar prefer 165-168g for best accuracy results
Upgrades
rifle speed gas block
Bigger diameter quad rail/ inch shorter then original to compensate for upgraded gas block
Yeah Im currently stocking up on higher grain weight ammo to do a part 2 and see if we can get any improvements. Thanks for watching!
Riflespeed helped my 16 inch SFAR.
Mine would not run out of box… put a rifle speed adjustable gas block fixed all my issues (13 levels of adj)
Yeah that rifle speed seems to be the way to go if you're having issues. Thanks for watching
Did you have to change the dimples not that thats a big deal?
I love mine

The 180gr powerpoint is actually very accurate in my BCA .350L upper, sub MOA.
Good to know, thanks for sharing!
Read the manual. Says to run the gas system on as you say setting #4 for minimum of I believe 300 rnds before adjusting the gas block. I did that and had no issues whatsoever
Literally outlined in the video what the manual says about this subject..
Awesome, let us know how you like it!
Like this review. I was setting here thinking about how much money those 100 rounds cost. Maybe I’ll stop thinking about that stuff. I don’t have a 308 anymore where I live now nothing to shoot. Precision like you said is a question.. I’ll be following. 😊
Thanks for watching!!
This thing with a 5x micro prism might be a great battle rifle
Very true!
When troops were in Afghanistan i bet most would prefer that to a 556 foresure.
With a 6 lb rifle there is no way i hell i would ever choose 556 over a 6 lb 308...if the 308 was reliable.
I want one bad, but I'm gonna let guys like you be the betas. Thanks, subbed for more. :)
Thanks appreciate your support!!
Sorry I’m having a bad day I guess 😂
After seeing so many problems with the sfar I am glad I did not.
nice review =) keep at it
Appreciate ya watching!

How does having an LPVO on the rifle ruin the review???

My 16” shoots 3/4” to 1” groups all day long at 100 yards.
That’s with 147gr to 168gr projectiles.
The rifle favors the heavier 168gr
Im starting to think the same. Planning on getting another video of this rifle with some heavier stuff to see how it does. Thanks for watching..
Thats definitely the way to go. Thanks for watching..

Got mine back in June of this year, no problems with mine shooting Tulammo as long as I leave it on 3.
I am a light weight addict when it comes to my rifles, I have made a couple of changes to the rifle and have it down to a little over 5.9 pounds without any optics.
Here's the changes I have made so far:
1. Foward assist delete
2. Change over to a MFT Minimalist stock
3. Changed the factory regulator over to an Aero Percision adjustable gas block
To shoot at what again?
Looks like they did the same thing as POF the grip is pulled back enough to make room for the longer .308 cartridge
Indeed they did. Thanks for watching..
Appreciate the input!
just a comment i dont see how the the gas system can effect the accuracy of the rifle its more like the ammo used , i would gather in most AR platforms?
Thats great to hear. I'd really be interested to hear how well the 6.5 does. Thanks for watching!!
I don’t understand there’s only three settings one two or three. Either way you should’ve had some gas.
I don't care what your application is, any rifle i own including a battle rifle needs to be shooting smaller groups than 2 inches. There's no reason a rifle shouldn't be able to get smaller than 2 inches with good ammo. Period.
Cool, got to do what's best for you. Thanks for watching
Are you even capable of shooting any rifle you own under 2" 😂👌
I'm the same way.

What gas setting were you using?
I would like to know the actual number of people who have had problems when following the instruction manual. My guess is problems are way over blown.
Definitely will do my best. Appreciate ya tuning in!
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!!
After the lower grain ammunition I ran 180gr ammunition in it and it ran flawlessly. I'm not sure what is wrong with it. Any help you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
