- Ruger sent out a new and improved regulator for their gas block. Does it fix the issues?? Does the SFAR from Ruger finally become the lightweight battle rifle that is reliable that we all hope it can be??

Note: I did find that my gas key on the bcg came loose. Please checkout my subsequent videos which show how I fixed the SFAR!!
Also, I did check the tightness of the gas block and the screws were super tight. I didn't want to risk stripping them but they were over 30 in-lbs [corrected per comment] on the torque wrench and so I let them be (per @brad branch 's channel update)
We know you meant in lbs. Mine was at 30 so I went up 5 inch lbs more to be safe, as there was one that was looser than the other. I called them about a regulator as well. They told me to give it 200 rds. 😂 If it didn't help you, shouldn't help me. 7.62 is finicky with my sample, but .308 has no issues for me. They should maybe market it as ,308 only.

@@fubuh8r thanks again! that was the same way mine ran at first. I may keep trying this this new regulator and mess with the buffer weights to see if I can get both to run at setting 2 and both to run at setting 1 unsuppressed. As another viewer pointed out on 308 my bolt was outrunning extraction so I may got back and play more even though I got frustrated in the video.
Just uploaded a new video now. Turns out my gas key on my bcg is coming loose. Maybe that caused the sudden failures??!?
I was really excited about the SFAR , however the results from a variety are at best mixed , I’m waiting maybe for a possible “ Gen 2”

Personally, I've had nothing but a great time with mine. 2-3k rounds through it and its been fantastic. I've got mine to hit plates reliably out to 800yds on factory ammo, which is plenty good imo. No malfunctions or any issues really

Just got mine and I have only run 80ish m80 and a handful of match handloads with Varget. All of these on setting 3 for "break in". I haven't had any issues on 3. After a few more rounds I will see if I have same issues you all have on #2. Appreciate the information and demonstration. Happy Father's Day.
Thanks a ton! Until I replaced the regulator with the "updated one", mine always ran on setting 3. That's what's so frustrating to me, I think it got worse! Good luck I hear some just run and run and run. I hope yours is like that!

I’ve ran about 100 rounds through mine as of now m80 ball from magtech and federal and have had zero issues so far also a mag of 150 gr Speer gold dot and she chomped right through them
That’s fantastic! Are you running on setting 2 or 3? I ran 200 rounds of m80 ball on setting 3 when I started out but had problems trying to go down to setting 2 and had reliability issues with my suppressor on setting 1.
in my opinion the first mag’s ejection pattern was all over and a few rounds did show signs as being over gassed . 2,3,4 mag seems to under gassed as the majority of the brass ejection pattern appeared to going back over your shoulder (4-6 o clock position). maybe there’s more tuning needed other than gas ports. i am not by any means an ar-10 expert but hopefully someone may know better than i dont and have more input. As always thanks for the video very educational.
I think you are right. Seems to be gassed right for the 7.62 now but I couldn’t get the 308 to work on either setting (2 or 3). Who knows. Yah I may have to leave this to someone wiser than me! Thanks again for your insights!
It’s over gassed on the 308 ammo. You can see it hitting the front of the opening on the ejection port then bouncing back towards 4;00 spot.

Another guy checked the gas block set screws. One was hand tight and the other wasn't even making contact with the dimple. He reinstalled screws and had the "gen 2" regulator and it ran fine.

Also, to my knowledge Brad hasn’t tested 308 ammo with it, just 7.62 NATO. Mine ran that just fine but failed on the 308. But I also had the other problem I wasn’t aware of at the time of this recording.
I was about to pull the trigger on an SFAR before I came across a number of threads related to the guns chewing up brass. Your video was the nail in the coffin for me buying one. Thanks for saving me $1,000. 😅
Well glad you at least are armed with more info! Btw, I did find at the end of this video that the gas key had come loose. Ruger did fix that and I just put up a video of where I replaced ruger’s gas block and it is running much better. But it sounds like you are a wiser man than me and would take this as all the more reason to not purchase it! 😂🤣
Ive had nothing but problems with my SFAR. Failure to extract and the extractor shearing a chunk of the rim off of the casing; leaving the casing lodged in. Failure to feed AND failure to eject leading to stove piping. All on both settings 2 and 3 with 7.62 and .308.... It acts over gassed and under gassed at random all the time. It hurts to say this being a fan of Ruger products but by far; this is the most un-reliable gun I have ever purchased. Genuinely disappointed with Ruger.
Yah that sucks. I’m really sorry. Btw, check the tightness of your gas block and gas key. My gun has the gas key loose and other guys had the gas block loose. Maybe just tightening those up will help!!
I'm right there with you, sir. All of those problems. They replaced the BCG, then they sent the "new" gas regulator selector..just as random as ever. I just got back from shooting another 55-60 rounds... after I turned the camera off, I cursed the entire way home.

The only other issue has been the gas block and or gas key being loose from the factory or be coming loose from not being tightened or steaks properly and that’s something you can do yourself by looking over the firearm when you first get it like any smart person would do
I wonder if the rifle would perform better if it was held perpendicular the way it was designed to shoot rather than cocked to the side as you are shooting it. Granted, it should fire the same regardless of the position but to perform a legitimate review the rifle should be properly held. It may or may not make a difference but if you are going to do something, it's always best to do it right.
Well, if you read the pinned comment you’d know that the issue was the bcg gas key came loose and was the cause of the issues. Turns out running this gun or any gun with offset optics runs just fine. If you’ll notice I’m using the offset optic because I’m running at close range. Offset optics are used in the military, police and competitions all the time and is not running it “wrong”.

Offset optics were never used when I was in the military. Of course that was about 60 years ago.
Nor were there any policemen so foolish as to fire a pistol turned sideways.
Anyway, from the reviews on it which I have seen, the Ruger SFAR, as it is presently being manufactured, is going to have a very short life. One of the accessories included with the rifle should be a gas mask.

Mine had headspace issues and would stick closed on a go guage. I mentioned to Ruger that this might be an issue the 2nd time I sent it back. They returned it with a new BCG and regulator but never checked the headspace. Really disappointed in mine and tired of messing with it. They can keep it.
That’s so frustrating!! I may need to send mine in. But mine ran pretty good on setting 3 with an h3 buffer spring but with this new thing it doesn’t run at all. Ugh!
@triggerbarPhD My problem is that it is designed to run on setting 2 with 308. Mine would run with the new regulator but was blowing the primers and case out. I dont mind tuning a used or built AR10, but factory bought from a company like Ruger, and we shouldn't have to. I felt like the gas, buffer etc were all band-aid solutions to a much deeper problem.
@@DRockDreamin What brand and load of ammo was blowing primers? I had that issue with Freedom Munitions from 3 different loads. No other ammo has done that and works fine.
@sonnygunz9207 Hornady Black and Whitetail, also Federal Gold Medal Match. Real bad on setting 3, bad on 2, only cratered the primers on 1 but wouldn't cycle

My 20" rips case rims on setting 3 & will not fully cycle (pick up next round or lock back on last round) on setting 2. I'll call Ruger, I think this regulator might help. Basically I need a 2.5 setting I think.
Along time ago Ruger tried to make a 308 Ranch rifle neve made it to production too many problems. I will keep my LR 308 that works fine .

Looks like most of the gas is being directed back by that brake. It honestly looks pretty ineffective as a brake too, but hard to say for sure being supported.
Thanks! Yah not a great muzzle brake, it’s the dead air Xeno brake. It does okay as brake but is a great suppressor mount! 😂. But that’s not the problem. I’ve had pst videos to show that no matter what brake I do it still has the same problems including the original. The good part though is that if you checkout my next video I learn why I was having so many problems and why I had so much gas in my face!!
I had so many issues with .308 - I was able to get it semi functional w/ setting 3 but found I had to do that Areo Precision AGB to get it to function correctly on 7.62 and .308 suppressed and un-suppressed.
Their new solution still seems suspect.
Yah I’m going back. It used to work fine on setting 3. I’ll go back and if that’s doesn’t work follow your advice on the aero gas block.

Pig tail gas tube. I don't understand why they don't do it. Allows a little extra time for the pressure in the case to decrease before the bolt moves reward

Exactly. All should have been found in testing. I have two friends who got the SFAR and all of us have had issues. Ruger is pretty fast at try not to fix them but I can’t imagine this was a cheaper route to go…(fixing stuff after shipping)

Mine has just worked 100%. First mag on setting 3, thereafter went to setting 2. About 300 rnds through it.

Granted I've switched to a timney comp trigger, raptor charging handle, and a PRS lite with a carbine buffer spring I believe. But my SFAR has run like a dream the whole time I've owned it. Never had a malfunction myself, which could mean I've just gotten lucky with it, or you've just gotten unlucky with yours. Not sure
Yah no idea. I had my issues and I’ve heard from some that had similar problems and others where it runs fine. Wish I knew!! Glad yours runs great though!
@@triggerbarPhDclearly they don’t have the best quality control but the parts their self are sufficient. The only thing they did wrong so far was the regulator everything else is just lack of quality control i.e. tightening the parts down so like I said, everyone always check over your firearms b4 shooting them. It’s that simple.
How was the recoil? In the vid this looks really bad for .308 Win range feed. My Desert Tech MDRX with a can and full power hunting loads is closer to a 5.56 than this one.
I need a desert tech, those things are awesome!! The recoil was okay. The gas seemed much worse to me.
@@triggerbarPhD based on my experience, can’t recommend them enough. My 308 is pretty precise as well, about 1MOA. Nice compact hunting rifle with a 178 grain ELD-X handload, and more than anybody would ever need for SD😁

Ruger SFAR needs a Gen 2 with more gas adjustment settings.
My Palmetto PA10 gen 3 has three positions per rotation. A total of 17 positions.
The Palmetto 20 inch came in the 12th position but I turned it down to the 5th and it runs great with minimal gas.
The Ruger SFAR is intriguing because it is such a lightweight AR-10, but they need a more adjustable gas valve.
10000% agree with this statement. Most of their issues would be fixed by this change.
Looks like the new one has three ridges at the top where the old one only has two. At least now I can check my rifle to figure out which one I have in it.
Placed an order for a 16" SFAR today. Will see how well it runs. Been wanting a large caliber AR that was lightweight. Been looking at these for months now... sucks having issues.
Well, you are the guy that can get it running if it isn't running right from Ruger. Check out my "Secrets" video on the SFAR if you haven't already. In the end I needed to get a "more" adjustable gas block on there and I put an aero one on and that finally fixed it right. But many SFAR's run just fine. Without modification, I believe you'll find: 7.62 Nato on setting 3 and 308 on setting 2. 308 suppressed on setting 1 and 7.62 Nato on setting 2. That's when the gas key doesn't come loose like it had in this video but I didn't realize it yet. Also, the gun is notorious for having misaligned, or not-tightened set screws on the gas block and the gas block hitting the hand guard (may need to replace the hand guard). Lots of good info on this out there now. Good luck and I'll be watching!!

How's the Ruger sfar 308 running today? March 10th 2024.
I’ve got it going now but I had to change the gas block out to something with more gas settings. Once I did that, it works so well!! I just did two videos on it last month for a suppressor and for a new scope.
Thanks for the update, I have been very interested in this platform but like some of the other commenters stated, I'll wait for the issues to be worked out. However, @DRockDreamin's comment about Ruger's customer service response is less than confidence inspiring.
Yah that’s really frustrating. I’m going to put mine back to where it was and retest and hopefully I’m back to a working rifle!
Ruger has great customer service from what I here! They just need to work on lookkkg stuff over b4 it leaves

Nope. Didn’t matter. Also there is a hard to see center offset red dot. Offset red dots are used in competitive shooting, by the military and by police. the canted red dot allows for mounting an optic for up close shooting while you have a longer range optic mounted.
For those claiming people purchase this as a budget option... I suspect many purchase it because it is the lightest or perhaps the 2nd lightest 308/7.62x51 in the AR platform.

Exactly. As far as cost, Diamondback and PSA both produce similarly prices AR-10s. I'm interested in this as an affordable POF (which honestly has similar issues) at more than double the price.

It almost acts as if it's over gas but your shell casings are going behind you usually when it's over gas the bolt carriers going so fast it's good slamming back for it and it's not able to catch you another round
It was and I and think that was because of the gas key being loose.
Would anyone like to buy a Ruger SFAR? It's lightly used, 700 rounds, has a couple new replacement parts from Ruger itself, and the gun apparently works exactly as Ruger intended. 👹🔥 If nobody makes a decent offer in the next week, I will simply toss it in the trash.

Yah it’s a bit unfortunate. Hopefully they follow OSA and release a gen 2 soon and fix some of these issues.
You need to lock your bolt back until you go to the rang next time. This will help your new recoil spring take a set, this should solve your problems.
That is not how springs work. Springs don't break in while in a static position when its within their designed range of motion, springs break in through cycling between their compressed and extended state. People in the gun world figured this out when they realized you can leave a magazine fully loaded for decades and it won't cause any permanent compression of the spring (break in).
@willcarpenter8181 I have tested this several times on ARs. Take two new springs and put one in your rifle, and lock it open for a week. Take it out and lay it beside the new one, and you will see.
This worked with my RIA 80 SHOTGUN. I left it locked back to the rear for 3 weeks. Once I got some ammo, I ran almost 150 rounds through it without a jam.
I may try this on my SFAR 16 inch. Hope it works as the quality of weapons manufacturing and QC is lacking. I am not just bashing Ruger, I have expirenced this in other new weapons in the past few years.
@rik4369 It works for sure , I have done it over and over on all sorts of seim auto firearms. I have even bought rifles from people that they gave up on. A week or two in safe and bingo, it's fixed.
To be clear, while this seems like a great approach…in this video after shooting the video I found that my gas key had come loose. So in this case it was something different. But great advice!!

Could be but I have seen way too many issues from my own rifle and others. Also the break in period is made up UA-cam lore. But I did run mine on setting 3 for 200 rounds before changing my gas setting. I confirmed with ruger that 100 rounds on any setting should be enough for break in which is also in the manual. On mine, I had gas setting issues on different rounds but then if you watch the video right after this one, or read the pinned comment, the gas key came loose on my rifle. That shouldn’t happen. It had not been properly staked. I sent mine back to ruger to get a new bcg (their recommendation). They also fixed the regulator again. After that I still had gas issues on various rounds, all documented here. What eventually fixed it for me was getting a new adjustable gas block from aero precision. After changing that out it’s been great. I have over 1000 rounds on mine. But I’ve seen burrs on some peoples chambers, improperly installed factory gas blocks, loose gas blocks, bad head spaced chambers/bcgs., etc. about 1/2 the people who comment tell me some other problem with theirs. The other half say it works fine. I’m convinced it’s poor QC AND a bad design.

They have gas leakage on some losses tolerance gas blocks to barrel.hold your hand over the gas block and shoot and see if your hand is black.its shouldn't be black from leaking block to barrel tolerance.the ones that work do t leak
gotcha. Yes, mine was not leaking. I mean it was. The gas key had come loose so I had to send it back to get that replaced. I tested the gas block and it was not leaking, I have seen others that were leaking. In the end I replaced my gas block with one from aero precision that had more settings and was able to find a setting that runs all ammo really well. Great gun now but for whatever reason wouldn't run well with Ruger's gas block (including the upgraded regulator that they sent out to me).

Only issues I had with mine was the assembly lube in the bolt carrier. Never used any of the mags or ammo he shot in the video either. I run pmc xtac 7.62x51 and it runs just as fast as my ar15. It doesn’t seem to like .308 as much as the 7.62. I see people having issues with it usually when they run hunting ammo that’s spendy dot use weird mags or screw with the gas system a lot. Like pmc x-tac is cheap ammo and that’s all I have ran though it so far and it works well. I have so far out about 600 rounds though it and the only time I have issues is with .308 and that’s when it’s just over gassed but that’s without me changing the gas setting. Also when it fails to feed with the .308 it happens once every 100 or so rounds.
Thanks for the update on yours! Are you running yours on setting 2 or 3 with the 7.62 ammo? The X-tac is great Ammo. I’ve just run over 800 rounds now and I’m having to grab anything and everything to test. Just go mine back from Ruger after they replaced the bcg and it appears to be running like yours with the 7.62 ammo on setting 3 and 308 on setting 2.
@@triggerbarPhD I have it on setting 3 when I was running the pmc xtac and also for the .308 aswell I didn’t change it at all. Like I said in my previous comment aswell it ran the .308 with minimal issues it ejected good it just had feeding issues like the nose hitting the ramp on the way up. Another thing to check look at your gas piston mine had a slight burr on it when I first got it that I remember now. We just took some sand paper to it cleaned it up got the assembly lube all cleaned off because that shit is well sticky and and shit. So double check that because mine was so bad that when I shot it it wasn’t ejecting because the bolt ligit wouldn’t even move. I feel like the issues on this gun lie in the qc department because as soon as I figured out those issues I have only had minor issues with it since then like I mentioned with the .308. I also run the 25 round windowed pmags too. It runs so good with that pmc xtac that I can pull that trigger as fast as I can and I can’t out cycle the gun.
@@b15ghost53 thanks and makes sense. I’ve had my gas regulator replaced and now fixed again. And now the bcg replaced so I think you are right about the QC! I just got mine back from ruger again and took it out yesterday and I think mine is running much better now with the new bcg and fixed regulator.
Semiautomatic rifles require ammunition that uses powders that burn within a specific burn speed range. If the powder burns too fast or too slow, you’re going to have cycling issues. “Hunting” ammunition uses these faster or slower powders depending on the bullet weight and barrel length it’s optimized for. Don’t use 308Win hunting ammunition in a semiautomatic rifle unless it specifically indicates that it’s made for use in semiautomatic rifles. It may work sometimes, but probably won’t work all of the time.
@@bretak74 great points. This gun was built for 308 win as I’ve discussed it with Ruger. Maybe not hunting ammo. But most semi auto’s in this caliber were built for 7.62 NATO, this gun was not. But your point is spot on, these guns are built for a specific ammo. I will say though, in my more recent videos I talk about how in this video the gas key came loose which caused many of my problems. In my more recent video I actually changed out rugers gas block and regulator with an aero precision gas block and now mine is running the full spectrum of ammo on a gas setting I found. But in general like you said these guns probably weren’t made for a full spectrum of ammo. I do think they they had hunting in mind with this rifle in its design though.

No that wasn’t it. The gas key had come loose. I had to send it back to ruger for a new bcg. That made it better. I have a lot more videos showing what I did to fix it.
@@triggerbarPhD I saw that being an issue. They changed the porting and the blocks aren’t secure. Still trying to decide between SFAR and CMMG. Local has an SFAR for 999. Hard to pass up.
@@veteranviper564 yes, very hard to pass up. I have my latest video up where it is running really well and another one coming out tonight with how it has turned out. Yes, you have to ensure all the screws on it are tight: I've seen gas blocks not tight, gas key not properly staked, handguard not tight, misaligned bcg (that required a placement for the guy), extractor on the bcg broken (right from the store), etc... The list is long. So the question is, have they gotten better in the year since they came out? Or are you willing to fix something like those issues/and/or send it back to Ruger. My experience with Ruger customer support was very good even though in the end they didn't completely fix it in my opinion. This gun just won't run some types of ammo especially if you consider the full spectrum of 7.62 NATO to 308. But there are enough parts compatibility on this system to be able to fix some things yourself. I'm keeping mine and really like it now but it took several months of tweaking, sending back to ruger and such to get it there. (sorry for the long winded response but want you to know what you'd get yourself into). Also consider the Sig 716i, by many accounts that might be the most reliable AR-308...
Were you using stock Ruger mags? Are you running the rifle light on lube? I have heard of guys using setting 3 for a few hundred rounds and things clear up with break-in time.
There are no stock ruger mags. It’s shipped with a pmag. Which I’ve used. I tried new pmags, lancer mags, they all function the same. I ran my gun in setting 3 for over 200 rounds to break it in. The manual clearly states break in is 100-200 rounds and says to run things in setting 2 to avoid damage. That said…I have over 1000 rounds on this rifle. I had the bcg gas key come loose, and ruger fixed that. They also repaired my gas regulator. Even with that I couldn’t get it to run. In the end I had to put on a different gas block from aero precision to get this to run correctly. Works great now. I have about 8 videos documenting all my issues and repairs. @@triggerbarPhD Thanks. What I meant to say was "factory" mags.I wasn't aware promag was Rugers supplier. It's a shame you had to go through an aftermarket vendor to find a solution. Usually if you send it to Ruger they make it right with you. What gun lube are you using? I see people run different degrees of lubrication. Just curious.
@@williamryan9195 I’ve tried a couple of different kinds. Slip2000, Lucas extreme duty gun grease, and Lucas extreme duty gun oil. Yah it’s been frustrating. I did have a video before this one where I was convinced it was a lube issue. And found the had fewer problems if I re lubed every 50 shots but then I thought that can’t be right. Who wants a gun that has to be lubed every 50 shots. Then that stopped working too. Ruger sent a new part ( gen 2 gas regulator ) then my gas key on the bcg came loose and sent it back to them. They replaced the bcg, and claimed to “fix the regulator “ but they wouldn’t tell me what they did or what that meant. Rifle sort of worked at that point. 308 on setting 2, 7.62 nato on setting 3, and one setting down for each of those suppressed. At that point I didn’t want to have to change my gas setting for every box of ammo I bought so but the bullet and put the new aero adjustable gas block on. That seemed to really fix it.

I think you hit it right on the head. QC issues. Also I'm just really wonder if tolerance stacking is biting them in the a$$ because most people have issues with some ammo on setting 2. The manual clearly states not all ammo will run on setting 3 so I guess it's not an issue but I don't like it like that. So I've changed mine and its great now.
At this point I am curious if they even tested the silly thing. Kinda like the 'new' S&W 2.0 10mm. I'm about to commit that one to the LGS as a trade and simply write it off as a lesson.
I went down the S&W 2.0 10mm rabbit hole. It was my adventure last summer and I never got it to shoot a whole mag no matter what I did. Ended up trading it back to the gun store.
@@triggerbarPhD I bought one in March. Mag springs. Recoil spring. Trigger (which I haven't installed because it's 1/2 the cost of the damned thing that doesn't work). I'm furious with S&W customer service and their BS product. I really wanted it to work. Extra mags, HoloSun SCS and all. And it doesn't work.
I do have a Glock 40 10mm longslide MOS that eats everything perfectly. It's just too damned big for day to day carry in a metropolitan area
My LGS has 2 a 16' and a 20' in wish they made a 18 maybe they will and address all the problems. I want this rifle so bad I love RUGER as A Company and a American brand, But I'm gonna have to wait on this guy till I know for sure it's a capable firearm
I think it’s wise. But look if all you want to do is shoot one type of 308 (not 7.62 NATO) you may be fine. But I hate gambling with guns. 🤷♂️
hey trigger could please explain that a bit? this will be my first 308 variant rifle, I always seen 308 & 7.62 NATO never really thought there was a difference kinda like I'll see 223/556 then 556 nato, is it the pressures of the cartridge or a actual difference, eager to learn. @@sandymitchell8182 the pressures between 308 and 7.62 are pretty big. Like 62,000 psi for 308 and 50.000 psi for 7.62 NATO. It would seem from my experience this gun performs and was designed for 308. I want it to run both and so I tested both and had a hard time tuning it for both. After I got the gun back from ruger and they put in their new regulator, it seemed to work okay with 308. Meaning it ran fine in setting 2, gas wasn’t that bad in the face. And it ran on setting 1 suppressed. But when I tried 7.62 NATO I got jams unless I switched to setting 3. Which makes some sense, less pressure requires more gas coming back to cycle the gun. But it was way too much gas to be comfortable to shoot and right in face. With this rifle it was very hard to tune so it cycled and was pleasant to shoot on all 308/7.62 rounds. But if you like choose one 308 hunting round and stuck with that, I believe you could tune it to be pleasant and reliable. That was what I meant. Now that said, the gas tuning isn’t the only bad thing I nor other have experienced with this gun which further calls it into question but I believe the majority of the issues are gas system related. But I’ve had my gas key on my bolt carrier group come loose (that should never happen), other had their gas block loose, others had a misalignment with their bolt carrier group and chamber. When you add it up it doesn’t paint a pretty picture. But I think those other issues may be small and rufer always fixes them. So then it comes down to getting it gassed right. So you either tune the current system for 1 or 2 specific 308 loads or you do what I did and replace the gas block with something not from ruger. Hope that helps! Btw, I didn’t know any of this either about 3 years ago. Just been learning it as I go from others explaining it to me and then as I go through the issues myself!
Oh my gosh, I did not know 308 and NATO had different pressures and to that extreme!! I do understand now, 308 has a much higher psi then a nato round, like the 223/556 nato does. @@sandymitchell8182 hahaha awesome! Yah and remember it’s the opposite. 223 has lower pressure and 556 has higher pressure. 7.62 NATO has lower pressure and 308 has higher pressure. Older “battle rifles” (semi autos) used to only be chambered in 7.62 nato and you couldn’t shoot 308 in them. That seems mostly fixed now but something to be aware of!
What grain 308 you running in the video? You might can get away on setting 1 for the 308 ammo your running. On setting 2 with that 308 ammo your over gassed. Looks as your also getting bolt bounce. The bolt is moving so fast that it’s hitting your spent case before it can clear the ejection port and causing the empty round to hit the front of your ejection port then bouncing towards the 4;00 position. I bet if you looked at your brass there will be dents on the sides of them. The best option is to just to swap the gas block for something with finer adjustments or add some mass to the buffer weight.
Thanks my friend! That explains it!! Hmmm maybe I will keep this regulator and mess with the buffer weight in it on this one to see if I can get it to run. I had a mix. The Hornady was 168 grain and the Norma was 150 grain.
@@triggerbarPhD if you slow the video to slow motion you can see the bcg hit the empty 308 cases and pushing them forwards into the ejection port then the case bounces back. The gas block in my opinion is what’s holding these back.

@@triggerbarPhD yes sir. I slowed the video to .25 play speed and you can see the issue. I’d try the 308 on setting 1 and see what happens. 308 ammo is a little hotter than 7.62x51 plus your using a heavier bullet. Seemed decent on setting 2 for the 7.62

Yes. And if you watch my next two videos you’ll see that in this video the gas key had come loose (didn’t realize it till after I posted the video, I believe I posted that in the pinned comment).
GAS has a lot to do with what lubrication you use. try Fire clean. I get no gas.
Not in this case. The gas key came loose from the bolt carrier group and was pushing gas into my face. After having to send the gun back to Ruger, getting a new BCG, it has much less gas. But thanks for the tip in general!
The first thing I would do is call Ruger customer service explain the situation then send the gun back to them along with a link to this video and then see what happens
Thanks! I have a couple of videos since this point where I have it working well now. They only got it working so far and they only test it with 308 federal ammo. I was looking for it to run a broader set but Ruger definitely fixed a couple of my issues when I had it back with them for repairs!

Had to send mine back to ruger. Had about 150rds through it and it had several incidents where it didn't feed or eject.
So frustrating. After this video I found that my gas key had come loose and also had to send it back. Working fairly well now.
@triggerbarPhD have a palmetto version AR10 with over 1000rds on it and never had a single issue with it and it cost me half the price of this ruger. It's disappointing.

Oh dang I’m sorry. They are usually very fast and will get it back to you quick. I do have another video on how in the end I fixed mine after I still had some problems after Ruger did some repairs to mine. But I do recommend you follow the path you are on first. Get Ruger to fix what’s wrong and then if you want to tune it more do what I did in my video. Good luck!!
Good video with real experience! It sucks you are dealing with that. Mine has been much better but not perfect. I would say i experience 1 or 2 failures on setting 2 per 50 rounds. The numbering is 3:00 of the hole. The hole is facing down lined up with the barrel and the setting number is where you can see it. Setting 3 has the largest hole.

I was completely confused. The smaller holes mean less gas is bled off for cycling. I got that backwards. Apologies. Hope it works for you! I had a few issues and in the end after ruger fixed my bcg, and I replaced the gas block all together with an aero precision adjustable gas block it’s running where I want it to run. I was able to get it to cycle reliable on setting 3 with 7.62 nato and setting 2 with 308. I think that’s what ruger intended but I wish they’d put that in manual.
Seen 2 at range ,both had ftf+fte. Guese ima hafta stick with the fpc till its worked out

Have you looked at the Palmetto State PA-10 Gen3? How does that gun compare to the Ruger SFAR?
I have seen them but I have not shot so I can’t compare them. However, I do have the aero M5 and recently did a comparison on that one. The aero m5 and psa pa-10 are cross compatible so they are very similar. I’ve heard from a channel friend who has the PA-10 it’s very reliable. The PA-10 and M5 are just much heavier. But is it better to have a more reliable gun or one that’s lighter? Probably depends on your situation. I have a short and a longer format video comparing the M5 and SFAR.
I have a problem with mine being ‘stuck’. It takes a lot of torque to move between gas settings and my ejection pattern is all over the place and won’t group shots. It’s weird.
I would definitely call them. That does sound like a bad regulator. They just sent me the little part and how to change it is in the manual.
After owning 2 Saint Victor 308's they have the same problems as well...

How do you get a replacement regulator? Mine will run on 3 but misfeeds on 2.
Call to Ruger customer support and tell them if your problems. I later learned I had more problems than just this. I ended up having to send mine back to Ruger which they paid for and was able to do it without going through a store or anything. But you can tell them your issues and ask for a new regulator. In the end mine is still picky on ammo. Good hunting and match 308 runs fine on setting 2, but 7.62 nato needs setting 3. I think that’s just this rifle. You hear people say theirs runs everything then you ask them more and they say they’ve only tried like 2 kinds of 308 ammo or it runs everything and they only run it on gas setting 3. I think in the end this is just picky…I do have two more videos out with a 3rd coming out soon on more of my experience!
Been buying RUGER's for 40+ years , all were great my SFAR is a piece of crap with issues mentioned above -even after I sent it to RUGER and they "fixed" it. Pure junk!

I was all excited to buy one of these. Went to my local shop and saw it. Loved it. Then I started seeing all the reviews. Ummmmm no way. Serious gas problems with it. I got the Sig 7161 instead. Few bucks more but the difference in quality is night and day. Buy once cry once

@@triggerbarPhD I hear you. I was this close to buying the Sfar. I really liked everything about it. But just way too many issues. And for $1200 to have all the issues? I feel bad for guys who spent all that $$. You just want to load and go shoot and have fun. Not have to have a PhD in gunsmithing to have a day at the range. Honestly, once I saw the build difference between the Sig and Sfar there was no comparison. The Sig is like a Mercedes and the Sfar is a Yugo. Good luck my friend. I wonder i a Superlative Arms agb fits on the SFAR..imo, they're AGB:s are superior to these very rudimentary fixed position AGB's. You can fine tune it exactly how you like it, "bleed-off" system that reduces carbon guck up significantly. Gasses are also vented FORWARD, and not straight into the palm of your hands..
I have heard that other people have done that. If you look at my most recent two videos I went with an aero precision agb. It has 15 settings and found a setting that works for all the ammo I’ve tested and doesn’t rip my brass or shoot gas out uncomfortably. I am sure you could do the same with the SA one. It’s a .750 journal that you’d need.

Turns out the gas key came loose, had to send it back to ruger to get it fixed. Worked better after that but in the end changed to a different gas block.
If you havn't done so yet... make sure the gas block is tight.

I think all the companies must be suffering with the increased demand but seems like that’s all the more reason to get QC under control before they ship. 🤷♂️
I have no comparison reference from one gun to another, or one gas setting to another - so I'm not really commenting on how much gas is involved with your settings or rifle...but what I did notice with my M&P (and then all guns) and my "perception" of how much gas was going into my face was greatly (and obviously, in hindsight) affected by what the wind or breeze is doing. It's something that caught my attention at the indoor range, vs the outdoor range. I think there are parts of this outing where it looks like even muzzle blast gas is coming back to your face. Just pointing it out, so you don't get tricked and think you are getting less gas-in-face when maybe it's more, or vice-versa.
5:30 - "so much gas" - comes your way, sort of then swirls towards camera
5:59 - looks like it's LEAVING your face
7:02 - really coming your way
I keep forgetting to do it, but I did a couple of times where I'd hang a ribbon or string that I can see at the bench, and then another at the target. Wind at my outdoor-range often swirls, and is going in opposite direction at the target. This has more to do with POI and what I write on my notes ends up just being wrong when I walk out to my target. I hate the wind. LOL!!
This is crazy what you are having to deal with here...and these variables with mags, types of ammo (OAL, grains, tip-type, how hot, etc), different settings, trying to see ejection when gun is tilted vs vertical, gas-face, and on & on.
When my M&P 10 was having cycling issues, it was infuriating to be spending dollars upon dollars doing cycling testing instead of the other testing we'd much rather be doing. Sux, man. Saw your latest vid with loose key. So then you stumble across a new variable, that then means you have to roll through all of the other variables, yet again. Loose parts is just terrible.
This makes me wonder if there's anything about this rifle and what Ruger is doing in terms of a certain assembly or build and if they might be looking closely at who/where some of this stuff is manufactured or assembled, QA? If I owned their company, I sure would be. Imagine having one crew or location that single-handily destroys your reputation?
Man, as always so many great points! Yes I think wind is a factor. Just went to the range again today (and to your later point-yes this sucks I keep having to retest!! This stuff is expensive!!!!!!) and the gas was sooooo much better when the gas key is tightened down!!! Lol. But still had cycling issues on 308. I *think* I got it cleared up but I literally ran out of ammo. I’m definitely calling ruger and asking for a new bcg. This is nuts. But after all of this I think the new regulator is better but this gun still has design and QC issues. Now to be fair, I haven’t sent mine back 3 times like other people. But this still sucks.

No1 forced you to buy a budget minded weapon. It’s your fault if you didn’t do the research on the design.
If you wanted top-of-the-line, you should’ve spent three grand on the POF
Was really wanted this rifle but way too many issues. Does Ruger test their designs or is their QC that bad? I think I’ll just build one from scratch when I am ready for the next one.
That’s my recommendation. If you watch some of my next videos on it you’ll see the gas key came loose on this. I think having a single screw for the gas key could be a design flaw…

Cheap ammo, and maybe even the mag not loaded properly can cause the problems that your having.
I’m sure that’s true but the gas key had come loose. There are numerous documented issues with this platform that are not user induced. Poor gas regulator, out of spec bcg’s doing slam firing, improperly staked gas keys, improperly torqued gas blocks, poorly machined lands. Etc. mine was an improper staked gas key and it came loose causing gas issues. Even with that I had issues with the gun cycling all ammo so I replaced the gas block and since then things have run very nice. Ruger fixed the bcg. In the end I think their 4 systems gas block is 1-3 gas settings too short for their quality specs.

Yes. And I was confused…I’m not sure I still understand it. It looks to me they are a bit bigger on setting 2 and that is causing more gas to come back to cycle the ammo better. That’s my guess. I’m the end I have a later video that I said bag it and moved to an aero adjustable gas block and that really fixed the gun. Also in this video I didn’t know that the gas key had come loose. That caused additional problems I didn’t understand at the time.

Why not use 3, that would be the logical thing to do?
Without changing the buffer weight, it rips cases and puts a ton of gas back in your face and recoils more than it should. I did tune with an H3 buffer and that worked okay. Would have been fine. I just wanted more control because I was worried I’d come across a round it didn’t work on. In the end I’m glad I did because my gas regulator was in contact with my hand guard so I needed to do something anyways.
Also in this video, the gas key had come loose and I needed up having to send it back to ruger. It wouldn’t have run right on any setting but I didn’t know that till after I put the video up.

Question: (and yes I know it should not matter) why are you cocking the gun 45 degrees while firing? Did you try it in an upright position? It does seem they need to work the bugs out of that system.
Fair point. I have an offset red dot (45 degrees) and only put the target out at 25 yards so was using that for sighting. I feel confident that isn’t the problem though I see your point. My next video show actually something went wrong with the gas key so in this case that was true!
And yes I’ve fired it many times upright. The video I put out today was entirely upright. Thanks again!!

The gas I see is from the muzzle brake.
It was also coming back into me. Turns out my gas key had come loose to gas was just going everywhere m. I’ve released a few videos since then on discovering that and my latest is after it got from Ruger fixing it. Thanks for watching!!

I have heard fewer reports of problems with the 20” but some people have commented on some of my other SFAR videos that their 20” had problems. If you want one, wait 1 year (lol I didn’t and couldn’t ). Bet you anything this is running sweet by then. While there appears to be problems I don’t think this is unfixable. Improve the QC. Get the gas right. Check my two latest videos out, there was an issue with the gas key that I wasn’t aware of while filming and publishing this video!
I have the 20" SFAR only issue the bolt hold open doesn't always lock back after last round..

I got a 16" SFAR and it blew up with factory ammo. They replaced it and the replacement doesn't work. Ruger told me they won't service or replace it.
I think Ruger is trying to destroy their reputation by messing with their customers.

You are rotating the rifle 10 degrees counter clockwise which totally screws your accuracy. Maybe you don't care about accuracy because you're just testing the extraction/cycling of ammo, but even if that's the case, you are setting a hell of a bad example for people new to shooting, and veterans are going to be wondering why you are bothering to make videos if you don't know better. And why did you customize your rifle before a full break-in period? Now you have no normal break-in to use as a benchmark and you have to forever after wonder what is the culprit. You should have put 200-300 rounds through the rifle on gas setting #3 before changing ANYTHING. I don't know, bruh.
Fair enough on the 10 degrees. As for the other comments, that's internet rumor and just wrong and full of incorrect assumptions. BTW, at this point I had over 600 rounds through this rifle. I did shoot 200 rounds on setting 3. But after actually reading the manual AND talking with RUGER, what you said is internet lore. They don't specify which setting to break the rifle in on, that was started by some early youtube reviewers but is completely made up and not based in anything Ruger has published or even said over the phone or in email. I didn't change a thing until well after all of that was done and I tried to go down to setting 2. The manual states: "NOTE: The rifle will “break-in” after approximately 100-200 rounds. The regulator setting should be verified periodically, including any time a new ammunition is used, or if the rifle configuration changes significantly."
It also states: "Most commercial ammunition will
cycle optimally on setting “2,” which is an ideal starting point when first
shooting the rifle with new ammunition, unsuppressed."
Also, if you look at the first comment pinned to this video, what I didn't realize even before I published this video, is that the gas key had come loose on the rifle, the whole rifle had to be sent back to ruger per their recommendation to be fixed. As we are giving out advice freely, you assumed a lot based on watching one of my videos and not the other 10 on this subject. Also I'd recommend NOT giving advice that is counter to the manual and what the manufacturer recommends. I don't know, bruh.
@@triggerbarPhD I hear your points. I understand. Maybe there's nothing you could have done. I admit I'm easily triggered when I see people shooting a rifle rotated, especially with nice optics. Sorry for the strong reaction. I recommend shooting perfectly plumb at all times to build that muscle memory and avoid bad habits. And that's assuming the scope is installed properly in the first place, as they hardly ever are. As for me, my SFAR is one of the earliest models. Runs great. However, I did try to move to gas setting #2 after only 50 rounds, and sure enough I had a couple rounds fail to cycle. I'm going back out this weekend to sight in for deer season, and I'll be back on setting #3, and that's where I'll leave it until I run another 200 rounds through. I mostly run Winchester Power Point .308 150gr. On the subject of loose gas keys, I wonder how many SFAR owners will damage/loosen their gas keys by continually removing the guard for cleaning without removing accessories, banging into the gas block and gas tube, etc.
@JohnVieth thanks for the response. And as you can see I get triggered by the 300 rounds on setting 3 thing. Sorry about that. I’m found that other than the gas key on the bolt carrier group coming loose, I could get most rounds to cycle on setting 3 and suppressed on setting 2. But it remained fairly gassed. So much so that my cases were showing tearing signs from the extractor. Change of buffer spring and weight helped with that. Eventually I also found that the ruger gas block was hitting the hand guard. No good for a free floated barrel. Changing the gas block to the aero precision gas block fixed that and allowed me to reduce the gas and pressure on the system including fixing how my cases looked (no pressure signs). As you shoot id recommend you look at your cases if you haven’t already to see if you have pressure signs. Didn’t happen with all ammo for me but some types. I also found this gun worked (without modifications) far better with 308 ammo vs 7.62 NATO rounds. I confirmed with Ruger that that’s the cartridge they designed the gun around. Also, I rewatched the video, you probable can’t see it but I have an offset red dot on this rifle and in this video I was using that dot to shot the rifle. The can’t is intentional for short range shooting. It’s a common set up for 3 gun competitions. Hence the cant.

Buy once cry once 😃😃😃😃 I've been watching a lot of UA-cam channels on the rifle and I've seen it in person I can't find one with the 20 inch barrel or an 18 inch barrel but it just feels and looks well put together 😎 the Ruger I'm just uncomfortable with the way it feels and looks.. it doesn't look like it's pistols how they're put together.. Ruger pistols are great pistols for the Mark !!! Can't say anything bad about their pistols and some of their rifles they're really good !!! But this rifle that they just came out with I am not happy with it 😭😭😭😭😭
