One Hitachi car is preserved at the Newport Railway Museum (187M), I have heard rumours they are also getting a Comeng car but not sure yet. At this stage it's very unlikely that any examples will be preserved in operational condition.
Complexity can be overcome with the right knowledge and resources (see the Z2 class and Variotram at the Sydney Tram Museum). But I agree it is unlikely in this case.
Another train scrapped around the same time but in much more secrecy was the 4D double decker. In case you missed the Nine news coverage a few months ago ; ua-cam.com/video/zQwIj4d3PAg/v-deo.html Nine had not much scrapping video though.
Either way, the majority of the fleet are going for scrap. I suspect that a single M car will be going to the Newport Railway Museum, but I seriously doubt we'll see a full set preserved sadly.
Sad to see this - would have made an awesome model railway shed.
Nice video mate. Sad to see the Hitachi trains scrapped. They played a big role in melbournes train network.
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Where did the parts go?
Unfortunately I never got to experience riding one of these trams
Nice Video
We’re they all scrapped at Ballarat
No, I think most were scrapped at Sims in Brooklyn. I'm not sure why this one was in storage at Ballarat.
Will any comeng or hitachi be preserved for future occasions?

They could have saved some of the graffiti laden panels and sold them as art.

The first sets were in service in 1972.
Nom nom nom.
Accurate!
Soon the Comengs will experience the same fate
