That line where he celebrated the fact that John made it to 78 really put into perspective how precious life really is, and that we should really be grateful for every moment we have life.
Even in his last days, he brought us "Walking on thin ice", literally clutching it in his arm, creative to the very end. We lost a lot of good music for the rest of the 80s, 90s and beyond.
If our John hadn't died in New York at the hands of a madman, he still may have died as a result of his drink and drugs history, just like George died from smoking like my late mother's father.
The Ice Cream Man Yeah, but I never got to know either of my grandfathers properly my maternal one died of lung cancer when I was eight and I never met my paternal grandfather who died of drinking when I was even younger. I'm 58.
Like others, I remember the wave of surprise when that door opened. For the briefest of moments, John was alive again. One's suspension of disbelief took a momentary vacation and that was alright. The ensuing dialog was weirdly cryptic, but it didn't matter. John made it to 78.
This scene brought tears immediately. "Can I give you a hug You made it to 78" literally everyone in the universe would have said that to John. The whole world can feel what Jack is feeling in that moment.
Reading your statement has me tearing up too, "IMAGINE"... John, before any of us, MINUS THE "DUMB-ASSES" that have to attack with their IGNORANCE...NOW EXPOSED.
I took my grandfather to see this movie in the theaters. He's a huge Beatles fan and I was extremely interested in the movie and let me tell you this, when this scene came on and when actor that played John came out, my grandfather shed tears. He was shocked, gasped, and cried. That's how wonderful this movie was.
Jesus, every time I think I’ve seen Robert Carlyle’s full range I realize he’s been in another movie and absolutely slays the role. I had no idea this was him until i read your comment.
Very. Especially when you see him talking and trying to help and feed that young burned out hippie that showed up at his estate. He was John Lennon... he didn’t have to do that. But he did. As harsh as his personality was... that’s the John I imagine. And can we just give Yoko the respect she deserves please? The way she handled his death, the media, his band mates, and his legacy. If the John and Yoko thing never made sense to you, then you’ve never really been in love. I loved this scene, closest thing to closure we may ever get ✌🏻❤️
@@matthewharper5387 I remember seeing the clip of John talking to that young man. I remember feeling so sad for the guy, he seemed so sad and lost. As I recall, John was kind of stern with him, telling him not to look to others for the answers, that he (John) was just a person who happened to be famous and that he wasn't any wiser than anyone else, then he invited the man in and let him eat with them.
It's what he'd do... but again, as age would definitely add a bit of sensical behavior to his already hippy-esque attitude of life, by the time of reaching 78, as much as he'd be open to talking to a complete stranger, he'd still (at the end) be like, "...but yeah mate you probably need some serious psychological help."
Update: John Lennon would’ve been 80 today (9th October 2020). Edit: Today marks the 40th anniversary of John’s death (8th December 2020). It’s shocking that he’s been dead for the same amount of time he was alive. 😥
Lea Fay Tanghal my wife and I watched this last night and when John opened the door in this scene I cried too. I thought about what kind of world it would be if he was still alive all these years.
I came here again after listening to "Now And Then", because listening to that last song was like receiving that hug from John, a beautiful gift that The Beatles gave us so many years later
Here's a thought - the fact that cigarettes were never invented in this parallel universe means there's a good chance George would have still been alive as well.
Funnily enough John Lennon used to complain that The Beatles produced too many silly love songs. McCartney was the one who believed all you need is love. 🤣
@@LoganBluth All You Need is Love isn't a love song in the romantic sense. Although it's been misconstrued that way a lot in the media and movies (I'm looking at you, Love Actually). It's about people loving one another and living peacefully together.
One of the rare scenes that brought me, literally, to tears. Just goes to show you don't need a $200 million budget, huge movie stars, big explosions, and fancy SFX to make a good movie. Talented actors. A clever script that avoids cliches. And a deft director is all you need.
Richard Curtis is a damn brilliant writer. He never gets enough credit, all his movies are lovely. And without him there would be no Mr. Bean also. I've seen even Rowan Atkinson saying Curtis was more responsible for how Mr. Bean turned out to be than himself.
I just love the sequence, "Have you had a happy life?" "Very." "But not successful?" "I just said, 'Very Happy.' That means 'successful'." Both simple and profound.
I mean he's made it to 78 and has his own home in a beautiful location.....that's more than a lot of people manage lol. Richard Curtis idea of humble/unsuccessful is still most normal people's dream. If I ever own a home somewhere like that I'll consider it a success.
This was such an emotional scene. Since the Beatles never existed in that timeline, John Lennon was never assassinated, and while that's emotional enough, Robert Carlyle's acting made this scene absolutely perfect. Jack was just so starstruck, but John never understood why, and ... it just makes me cry every time I see this.
Actually in the credits of the movie when I went to go see it I didn’t see his name listed, I think Robert didn’t want credit because it’s John Lennon, a legend and a beautiful soul
I live on Long Island and my friend works at that theatre selling food and stuff. She said they all knew ahead of time he’d be there and to stay professional. When they got there nobody knew until they were already gone. So it’s hard to say, since they did such a good job hiding. I’d imagine it being super emotional. A lot of people were crying when I saw it in that same theatre.
I remember watching this movie in a theater, and my dad gasped when John Lennon showed up on the screen. It was one of the most wonderful scenes in my life.
When I saw the movie in the theater the first week it was released, this scene came on. And when John opened the door there were gasps from the entire crowd. Totally unexpected. It's the coolest moment I've ever had in a theater ever. People were crying tears of joy seeing "John" alive and well and happy.
I think it was mostly from people our age, who remember him and were so profoundly impacted by his death. Seeing him here, as an old man. My God, if only it could have been real.
@@jamisonescott2300 Yeah, I think many younger folks think Lennon was some "dude" from Russian history (and even here I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt!)
Yeah right! Julian Lennon had to buy his father's stuff off that evil gold digger ! And if he complained he would get nothing!! Can you respect that???
I watched this in the theater. When John opened the door there was an audible gasp in the audience and someone let out a "Holy s***!" They did a great job making the actor look like Lennon.
Every time I see this scene, over and over again, I find it something fantastic, a work of art in itself, to see a John without the fame, but intelligent, humane, painful, surviving, and infinitely wise.
I adore how they incorporated John’s real love for boating. He went exploring and sailed all over the world in the mid 70s. Noticed it after reading the book compilation of his letters he wrote to frends and family.
WOW!! Mind blown!!! Just an incredible depiction of the contrasting ways in which an idea can be realized.. From an all white room, singing a masterpiece, to a rustic, soon to be forgotten rowboat. Visual poetry for the soul, this.
John Lennon’s death was the first celebrity death that ever actually affected me. When I heard the news, it hit me hard. I remember looking at the album I had only recently bought and realising he would never write another song. It felt impossible and surreal. I’m not ashamed to admit I cried. I wasn’t a Beatles superfan or even a John Lennon superfan, but I did love their music and most of his songs on “Double Fantasy” really resonated with me. His death just felt like an unimaginable loss, especially given his age and how he died.
My take on this scene is that when John was a kid his parents made him choose to live with his dad or his mom he initially chose his dad but ran to his mom when he saw her crying, maybe in this reality John stayed with his father instead and that’s why The Beatles never existed here plus it would explain why his accent sounds a bit different. He also mentioned he sailed around the world and his dad was a sailor too but that’s just my opinion any thoughts?
For those who don't know, this is essentially the story of Pete Best (the original drummer before Ringo). he ended up finding his wife after being kicked out of the Beatles for being too good looking and says that it was the best thing that every happened to him. he's lived a very good life with his wife and kids and considers it a blessing that he was kicked out.
He wasn’t kicked out for being too good looking, that’s a lie Pete best made up for a movie he co wrote, he was kicked out because was a trash drummer who thought he was bigger than the band
@@cathalmckibben7176I’m not sure he thought he was bigger than the band. He just didn’t fit in very well and wasn’t a very accomplished drummer. But yes, the myth that he was kicked out for being “too good looking” (and/or because Paul was jealous of him) is total bollocks.
Best wasn't kicked out for being too good looking. That's patently ridiculous. According to Beatles lore, George Martin thought he wasn't a good enough drummer, so the others decided to replace him. They were extremely ambitious young men.
This film honestly kinda bored me until this scene happened, and then I was overcome with goosebumps. First of all, the dude looks exactly like what John would have looked like had he grown old (not sure about the voice but voices do change with age so who knows). Secondly, it sends kind of a haunting message that John very well could have lived a full life had he never been a Beatle since it was his fame that was a primary motive of his killer. It just bring to life such an interesting conversation... Would you rather have the reality of a man who helped change the world with his music yet had his life cut too short... or have the fantasy of this beautiful soul living a full life but without the legacy? Very powerful scene. Saved the movie for me.
He was on his way BACK home, Yoko told him to get some dinner (out) but he insisted he wanted to go say night night to his son Sean (5 back then). Yoko told him he was probably asleep already (he was) but he insisted he wanted to go. :/
imo, you cant change your destiny...if you need to die that day, you will die. if he was "missing" the assasination time, then he would die in another way like getting hit by a car the same day, or slipping in his bathroom and hitting his head and etc. you just cant escape it, just like in "final destination" movies.
Chapman came specifically from Honolulu to kill Lennon. If he hadn't got him that night, he would have come back the next day, or the next. It wasn't a random act or a drive-by shooting.
@@huntermorgan6177 exactly what I was thinking🤣 this kid made a movie about “yo so what if I was as popular as the most popular band of all time?:D and then at the end there’s a scene where the most popular guy from that band is actually not dead and me and him have a special moment together”
This reminds me of the scene when Vincent Van Gogh visits his museum in Doctor Who, I love the idea of someone who was taken away to early still existing and seeing how they interact in today's world.
Richard Curtis was behind both scenes, so I guess it makes sense that there’s a similarity. Curtis is a sentimental lad, he can veer into schmaltz but the heart in his writing always shines through.
This scene is has two references to John Lennon one is his boat which says Imagine the other is where John lives near the ocean cause he once said in an interview for Rolling Stone Magazine in 1980 before he died he said when he’s 64 he and Yoko would live near the ocean in Ireland and look though their scrapbook of madness

Paul always had difficulty expressing his emotions I think and I seen a video where he was holding back tears listening to beautiful boy. I can imagine him and Ringo sitting together in the cinema trying not to cry 😢
And as Jack drives away, John looks out the window watching him leave. The phone rings. "Hello. Hey Paul. Not doing much. Just had this really strange guy drop by. What are you doing? Wanna come over and jam? Sure. Bring George and Richard too..."
It's entirely possible he said Pete instead of Richard. Remember Ringo was a replacement for Pete Best, who was only replaced because because of someone else's suggestion.
@@Arwen1964 well if I’m the case that this scenario was true then it’d be more likely it was Pete since the reason they got ringo was because Pete wasn’t good enough for parlophone, but if it’s just them jamming out then Pete may still be with them
I honestly went to the theatre just to watch this scene. Alone. And I cried, although not many people were there. We just need you John. Desperately. *I was a 22 year old broadcast engineer in NYC when John came up to our radio station for a two hour live interview promoting "Walls and Bridges". He was the nicest person I ever met, and I met a lot.*
This is actually the most influential moment in a movie for my love life, as I told the girl I actually love that I love her, after the movie, and she reciprocated the feeling. All I can say is that it was beautiful
I confessed in high school to a girl I had the hots for, but sadly she didn't reciprocate (and was already taken). However, a friend of mine, a girl, came forward about having a crush on me and I was really surprised at first, but after a while for once in my life I actually felt the attraction back. I'm proud of my girlfriend, and in two months it'll be a year since she changed our lives for the better. What I'm saying is that even if you fail the first time, DO NOT GIVE UP, don't let a failure damage you, keep yourself in good shape and be a loving person to have around, and you'll see that you'll eventually attract someone who wants you because you turned out to be exactly their type ^^
I appreciate the decision they made to not reveal who John’s wife was. Would have caused needless drama and detracted from the point and emotional weight of the scene.
Your point is true, but it would definitely have been Cynthia. There's no reason that Yoko would have been introduced to John at a London art exhibit if the Beatles hadn't been famous.
@@ilariawarren7276 I believe this is referring to her fight with and death from cancer. Cynthia's relationship with John was strained by his fame and touring / recording schedule, etc., which wouldn't have happened if his music career had failed. He wouldn't have left her for Yoko. So the presumption here must be that they had a much happier marriage in the alternate timeline, and after 50 years of marriage, he would definitely have done whatever he could to keep her alive.
I often wondered who his wife would've been if he was a normal regular guy after watching this scene. It's possible and likely that he never met or married Cynthia or Yoko.
When John Lennon was in school his teacher said to him; “What d’you want to be when you’re older?” And John’s response was; “Happy.” I like to believe this is the version of history where John achieved that.

The Beatles and John Lennon was a part of our lives from the time I was a small boy. I remember the night he was murdered. No, I didn't know him personally, but he had millions of friends.
Speaking for my Generation, its hard to explain to those who weren't there...But this scene is like that dream we all have...where our parents or a loved one are still around. And then we inevitably wake up and realize it was all just a dream. Scene leaves me wanting. Its not enough. It can never be enough. To knock on a door, and there he is. And what happened never happened. And somehow John has been spared. And yet, he's not the same, precisely because he was spared of being John Lennon. And you wish you could tell him. ..
Actually... I'm neither your generation nor was I around when John was still alive (born 1987) but this is exactly how I felt watching this scene. I cried my heart out and at the same time was oddly at peace with the world for this tiny moment.
Anyone who has lost people feels this way. I lost my uncles, one 17 years ago, one 2 1/2, and I couldn't say goodbye to either; both died suddenly and lingered, brain-dead, in the hospital, and that's a grief that I don't think will ever leave me entirely; I'm overall a very happy person and that grief has increased my capacity for joy but it's always slightly bittersweet now. I loved both of them; they were my heroes, in their different ways, and had as much impact on who I am as anyone besides my immediate family, my grandmother, and my best friend. I lost 11 friends in 5 years. I miss them every day, and I'd give so much to be able to speak to them again. I know exactly what you mean. It's grief, and it's nearly universal; the older you are, of course, the more you're surrounded by it. My father lost all of his siblings, for example, the last one passing nearly 10 years ago. That's a level of heartache I don't ever want to experience, but if I live long enough, I will.
What makes this scene even more sad is the fact that Paul McCartney watched this movie. Can only imagine what was going through his head during this scene.

Macca has dealt with losing John. My guess is he was thinking “ Dear god John could have NEVER lived as a NOBODY!”
Quotes from John Lennon - “ life is very short...and there’s no time for fussing and fighting, my friend “ “ When i was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happines was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what i wanted to be when I grew up, I wrote down “happy.” They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life.” This seems to summarize this scene well
I remember reading that quote of Johns . The teacher had it all wrong ..John knew what the key to life was at an early age , wiser than his teacher , he clearly listened to his mum and expressed that in his writings at school , sadly he was corrected on it ! A good teacher would have said “ wow”! What a great answer “ ....
That quote about the teacher and a happy life wasn't actually said by John. It's a common misconception because a post was shared with that quote along with John's face. It's a very good lesson, but sadly not one we can attribute to a young Lennon's wisdom.
Will never get over this, and the first time I saw it…wow!! John’s Death shattered so many of us…..and to see him at the door, and the character so credible!! One of the most moving things 😢I’ve ever seen n the screen🥰

I don't usually cry at movies. Happens after a big build up. When that door opened, I knew the man, the context, quite overwhelming. The rest of the movie was ok but this was the scene where it win me over.
I remember watching this in the theater thinking "I bet they're probably going to get John in there somehow" but I still went "wowwww" when this scene came up. This was probably my favorite scene in the movie. Touching, a little awkward, but very well done.
This was my favorite scene of the movie, just because it hits you so hard making you wanny smile and cry at the same time. To have John Lennon in the classic role of "the old, wise man who gives advice and presents the solution" was a genius idea. It's kinda bitter sweet when you think about it, because it's true, that he wouldn't have died if the Beatles wouldn't have existed and maybe would be living still after a happy life like in the movie. But then again his music would not exist and still be heard today and nobody would know him today except the people he's close to.
I wish John wasn't famous because he wouldn't have died when and how he did. He paid the ultimate price for being one of the most famous people in history. We wouldn't have all the phenomenal music he created but he would've lived past 12/8/80 because he would've been your average Joe living well into his seventy's just like he died in the scene in the movie.

The guy that plays him is Robert Carlyle, who also played Hitler in Hitler: The Rise of Evil and Francis Begbie in Trainspotting. Very underrated actor, imo.
Edit: He also plays Rupelstinskin in Once Upon a Time.

I was there on opening night and the entire theater gasped when that door opened. Many of us were crying by the middle of the scene, it was a beautiful moment
I can only "imagine" what that was like. Even though it happened 30+ years ago, his loss is still felt today.
I cried throughout the scene.
My God I wish I was there so much emotion in this scene

Radioman are you referring to the day John visited with Dennis Elsas? That was a major surprise for us listeners.
That is incredible. To be in his presence.
Yes yes. Beating his wife...
even when all of the beatles are gone, their music will live on for eternity.
That final chord and long shot of John Lennon being left oblivious and puzzled was beautiful

This is actually the most influential moment in a movie for my love life, as I told the girl I actually love that I love her, after the movie, and she reciprocated the feeling. All I can say is that it was beautiful
This is so beautiful
Good for you, mate. May you have years of solace, warmth, and depth.

My father (Who cried when the news broke in 1980) cried at this scene as he adores John Lennon and The Beatles.
“It’s so good to see you.” The one thing we wish we could have said
Amen!😁 God Bless.
@@SteveGellerMusic But he didn't exactly fight hard to keep her though.
@@SteveGellerMusic yeh that makes sense
I often wondered who his wife would've been if he was a normal regular guy after watching this scene. It's possible and likely that he never met or married Cynthia or Yoko.
When John Lennon was in school his teacher said to him; “What d’you want to be when you’re older?” And John’s response was; “Happy.”
I like to believe this is the version of history where John achieved that.
John never said that. There is NO record of it except on a bunch of T-shirts and coffee mugs sold by companies who couldn't care less about its veracity. It's crap. Look it up. And John would never have become so boring.

"you need serious psychiatric help".

@@clintfischer1057 - You shouldn't take things so literally. It makes you look morose and two dimensional. Somewhat obtuse. I was speaking of the sentiment. The Beatles and John Lennon was a part of our lives from the time I was a small boy. I remember the night he was murdered. No, I didn't know him personally, but he had millions of friends.
@@Cassxowary It really would be lol.. Perhaps in this timeline, he wouldn't have been quite so far gone.
It’s been 40 years to this day since we lost this man.
This scene gives me chills.
I have mixed feelings about John, but it makes me sad knowing he was robbed of the rest of his life... RIP John Lennon.
And you wish you could tell him. ..
love this comment ❤
Paul McCartney says he’s had multiple dreams of John Lennon, he enjoys them as they make him happy.
What a lovely and true thing to say.
Doesn't everybody wish this was true? I still miss John.
What makes this scene even more sad is the fact that Paul McCartney watched this movie.
Can only imagine what was going through his head during this scene.
Macca has dealt with losing John. My guess is he was thinking “ Dear god John could have NEVER lived as a NOBODY!”
@ yup, that was definitely john
@ your comment is so on point
It's like Remus waking up on the train and seeing Harry thinking he's James, for just a second.
John Deegan Oh,he’s dealt with it all right.
This scene is like a melancholic and peaceful dream. Really loved it
Quotes from John Lennon - “ life is very short...and there’s no time for fussing and fighting, my friend “ “ When i was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happines was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what i wanted to be when I grew up, I wrote down “happy.” They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life.” This seems to summarize this scene well
Paul wrote that part
I remember reading that quote of Johns . The teacher had it all wrong ..John knew what the key to life was at an early age , wiser than his teacher , he clearly listened to his mum and expressed that in his writings at school , sadly he was corrected on it ! A good teacher would have said “ wow”! What a great answer “ ....
Dude you won at life right there. Hope you got the happiness you deserve😊
Here is another one: life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

I was expecting Paul or Ringo but this was better than one could imagine
When he opened the door...it really was John, imo. But,...it took me a while to connect who it was.
Don't we all wish we could hug a 78 year old John? Beautiful scene!
Can I give you a hug?
WHAT?!!
It actually brought tears to my eye. Imagine if the world still had. John
