When Lennon was calm and articulate he was the best speaker in The Beatles. This is really nice to hear John's fond memories of Paul and how they healed their differences. This is my favourite interview of John. Thanks heaps for uploading this.
They were Great friends. Imagine, no pun intended, what all the Beatles had to go through when the Band broke up, and to this day, in every interview, Paul is always asked about John and the Breakup. This has to be difficult, especially when your best friend is Dead.
"Me friends are me friends, whatever way" Its really nice to hear him say that for some reason. With all the tension and put downs that proceeded their break up, it feels good to know that towards the end, they got back together and remained what they always had been..."friends".
It gets even sadder when you hear Yoko do her "bird calls" and reflect back on John saying she was super talented. I do wish he'd lived though just to see him standing around in art gallery's cheering Yoko on as she screams like a legit crazy person into a mic and thinks it's art. John would have become a heroin junkie again after one "performance" lol
John is someone I've been listening to since I was a kid. His voice has always been around in my life. Sometimes I listen to the Beatles everyday for weeks, and sometimes I got for months without playing them. You take him for granted because he's part of your culture and your heritage and he's always been there. Then you see an interview like this and realize how much love you have for him. Weird as I've never met him, but I love you John. RIP.

I still remember the day he died ... I was in total shock all week and flunked my maths exam as a result.
I believe they would have got together at one point or another. John & Paul were close even when they were mad at each other and not speaking. John said it best one time, "I can say whatever I want about Paul or the Beatles, but no one else can". Another words, if he wants to bad mouth Paul or the Beatles that's his perogative, but if he hears someone else saying something negative he'll stand up for them. Even if he says it first and they try and kiss his ass and agree with him he wont tolerate it. It's like family members fighting. They'll go at like cats and dogs, but will always stand by each other.
John's job was lancing Paul when he got too soft. Paul's job was forcing John to be more musically adventurous. Ironically in "How Do You Sleep" John was basically reverting to his role in the Beatles. Equally ironic is how well regarded "Ram" is as an album today.
yeah that was in reference to mick jagger. he said that mick had been saying some really "tarty" things about the beatles. "i can knock the beatles, but wont be letting mick jagger knock 'em"
lindas1st it’s like a school friend group where or friend pair where friends can bad mouth each other for fun but if someone else does it they’ll stand up for their friend because when friends bad mouth friends it’s for fun, but if it’s someone else that isn’t a friend bad mouthing someone’s friend, that’s a completely different story.
@Jim Barnes I was thinking the exact same thing. So many of his post Beatles interviews were so negative, but here he really seems to be in a good place in his life and is very positive.
The Beatles, these four lads, are like family to me. It wasn't only the music, it was the joy and laughter, and their beautiful hearts. We all knew it as young adults; something special came along. .. and they never changed from these Liverpool lads. It's just so comforting to experience them and know this. Thank you God for bringing them to cheer us.
This is the honest, retrospective discussion I've always hoped John had given. Now I hear it... He was not bitter at all. He acknowledged the deep friendship and connection he and Paul had and In fact he was caring and respectful. Really quite gracious. Thank goodness.
Imagine what it must have been like (and probably still is like for Paul) having all those reporters constantly in your face and probing you about your most private feelings for another person? Continually poking the bear to hear words of love or hate. No wonder both John and Paul got so sick of it and often came off as dicks about each other (John in particular, let's be honest). Their feelings for each other were never anyone else's business and yet they were baited again and again to disclose things that were deeply personal. Sad. But it's lovely to hear John in this interview, being natural and candid. Bless him.
Throughout it all, Paul looked up to John. From the '57 village fete to this moment. In the Get Back tapes, after George walks out and John hasn't shown up, they believe John has also quit the Beatles. Paul smiles and jokes, "And then there were two." But while the others continue discussing how to proceede the camera stays on him, and his smile fades and he fights off tears. Wrenching.
The Beatles; no-one can overstate their importance as a musical and cultural phenomenon. Their musical output is unrivalled and always will be. Paul McCartney is one of the finest human beings that ever lived.

For all that imbeciles that take sides and critique the Beatles' friendships as if they actually know something or the people involved -- here is John in his own words saying he and Paul are friends and actually getting along well. Thank you for this video
If you ever read the old interviews of the late 60's, so often the journalist would stage questions in just the right way to lead discontention without their fingerprints, in other words cleverly stoking the flames, just constantly planting seeds of disunity to get a juicy story. The connection between two artists in the creation of something beautiful, is part of the love that inspired them to write "With A Little Help From My Friends." Who do you think that song was about? Listen to it again. They loved each other, plain and simple. What you're hearing in this beautiful music is the chemistry between these four friends. No single one could make a Beatles track on their own, nothing was quite like it. Don't always take the word of the press as law.
I’m so glad this video is here. It’s proof that whatever their differences were after the breakup they got past it realizing sometimes it’s not worth losing friendships. I wish they had gotten together. We will never know. ❤️ the Beatles.
To me its not really about the great songs that John and Paul wrote....its how bloody MANY great songs they wrote...each song completely individual from the last one...amazing period of creativity
Lennon said he was happy for Ringo' success. But in the end George was likely the most held back during the Beatles days. He may have made the best solo albums of all of them. All Things Must Pass is a masterwork. Following that his Concert for Bangladesh is a hugely important musical work of the 20th Century. It wasn't until the Beatles went their own ways that some amazing talent was exposed by all of them.
2:53 "I jammed with Paul in LA, of course there's 50 other people playing too. But they were all watching me and Paul!" lol if I were a musician in the same studio as John & Paul I know I'd be doing the same. Not playing a note, just watching them!!!
There's a recording of the night he's talking about- it can be heard on this site under the title of 'A Toot & A Snore In '74'. I warn you going in: there isn't a whole lot of "there" there. Lennon an McCartney we’re on another level as far as songwriters are concerned but Paul was the real working class hero out of the whole band. That’s a fact👍
That accolade might go to Ringo. What's striking about the band is George Harrison was the only one who had a normal upbringing; the other three members had childhoods beset by tragedy, particularly Ringo.
Lennon never called himself a working class hero, the song isn´t about him... With that said. Lennon´s father was a sailor, he left him for like 17 years. Lennon´s mother was some kind of free spirit who couldn´t take care of him. So he moved in with his aunt Mimi who was a housekeeper, and her husband George who was a milkman. George passed away when Lennon was 14. So let´s not pretend he grew up in some fancy academic family.
What a superbly reflective, objective and self-aware man he became. I can only imagine what he could have gone on to do later in life. Like all 4 Beatles he was both ordinary and special at the same time. It was what made the world love them so much.
It sounds like he was in a good place and didn't blame anyone ! I remember the day he died very well I was driving and heard about it on the radio I pulled over and was brought to tears , what a sad day for me and the world ! God Bless you 🙏 John !
As someone born years after Lennon passed I just gotta say that he is one of the coolest people I've ever seen and its a shame that people like that so few artists today have his integrity not to mention talent.
I never saw this interview with John until now. This is great stuff. I loved how John was like, "I'm happy that Ringo is doing alright. That he found a niche. I knew Paul would be alright". Shows just how much John truly respected Paul, even though they fought badly during the time Paul was in Wings.
@Maxxx Modelz, yes, John feigned concern about Ringo, but like he admitted, when it came right down to it, he was in the tentacles of Yoko and learning how to be a self-serving bastard!!
He knew Paul would be alright not just because of his ability to make new music, but because those Beatles songwriting royalties never stop. Ringo, the only one not a songwriter, could've had a tough time.
Highly intelligent man and ahead of his time. I so wish he had got together with Paul and done something. I am so very sad that he is no longer in the world. The good are always taken... and I am often left wondering why. R.I.P. John miss ya. x

He looks so relaxed, and in good spirits, speaking optimistically and ready for a reunion. It would have happened in some way I'm sure. maybe in the alternate universe it did. RIP John, you're the greatest.
I enjoyed seeing John looking and seemingly feeling truly happy in this video. I especially liked hearing about his positive feelings towards each of the other members of the Fab Four. It seems as if five years after their breakup John realized how many great times they had together and how great the music on which they collaborated was. No reason for him to feel bitter. I've always wondered with sadness why John was taken from us so young and senselessly. I'll never forget that terrible night. He deserved to enjoy his life and family. I think that is how Paul views it now, and that's not only accurate. I believe it's the healthiest way for him to go on.

Walking up the East Side in NYC one sunny winter Saturday afternoon with a friend in 1977 by a small park, who do we see: John and Yoko about 20 feet from me. There was no one there other then them, me and my friend. My friend calls out to John, who responds with a "Hello there," and we approached them. My friend was enamored with John and I was giving the eye to Yoko and she give it back. We talked for a few minutes and they said they liked the ability to often walk in the city without being acknowledged or intruded upon. It was cool, and we talked for about 10 minutes. I must say, they seemed to have a sense of aura about them. Friendly and pleasant to talk with but we didn't want to intrude so we shook hands and complemented them and walked on. Nobody else there, just the four of us. Only in New York!
This was sad enough, after just reading about his death and watching the end of "Yesterday," but then he mentioned he'd been worried about Ringo and my heart burst.
In tears - beautiful to hear the often cynical, hard-shelled (but soft-hearted) John speaking so lovingly, really, about the boys and our Pauly, in particular. Thanks for posting this.

People that go on like they hate each other....mates/family have arguments and fights but you don't stop loving them. You can tell they had much love for one another.
Loved hearing this. John being balanced, fair, and loving. We can all only "imagine" what would have come from a reunion in the studio. But, we are all so lucky to have what they did give us. Great great songs and stories that we get to play over and over again.
Amazing to hear the legend John Lennon speak about The Beatles, his relationship with Paul McCartney and thoughts about getting back together. The artists and their music are so inspirational!
When you watch the movie "Yesterday" you remember just how many amazing, perfect tunes John and Paul wrote and how far beyond everyone they were - and still are - as a writing duo.
The things about this interview that make me happiest are 1, he and Paul are good. 2. He's happy that the others are doing good. It shows that no matter what all the press says he really did care about all of them.
I think as the Beatles, they had said everything musically they had to say. They had their time. There's no going back really. But as Lennon and McCartney, I could have seen them doing something had John not been murdered. That's what makes us ache. The music and life we missed out on. I felt the same way after Philip Seymour Hoffman died.
Love John, miss him..I love the Beatles music, they really got things going for every rock band that came after them. I'm glad that John and Paul made their peace together. What a heavy load it would have been for all of them if they didn't make up before John was murdered. Peace & Love just as Ringo always says..That's all it takes is Peace & Love!
I think we all forget what a hard worker John was. Always writing a new song, new lyrics, new style, new look. And all for his audience! That's a very unselfish person.
This changes my view a bit about John. I always thought he was the bitter one that would say he never wanted to get back together but this is a soft side I didn't know existed. Lovely.
Whispering Bob Harris was a music guru and an incredible DJ for the BBC. Bob interviewing John is something very VERY special indeed. Thank you so much for this upload Patrick.
Sometimes I get really sad about how it all ended, the death, the regret, the things that weren't said. But it's videos like this that remind me of the love that drove it all. I can spend hours being sad about what happened or what didn't happen, but they loved each other... so it seems worth it
I'm so glad with this little interview / compilation. It shows that John and Paul were soul brothers. As opposed to what almost every Beatles 'fan' here on UA-cam is writing.
John was witty and amusing. His dark side was steep growing without his parents. He got married too young to a woman he didn’t completely love who was pregnant. He could be very mean and cutting. Got high to many times and went far over the wall and was stuck on him enough to even say he was Jesus. The other 3 guys hated Yoko and with good reason she was overbearing and over stepped her boundaries. It hurt when they broke up but they were better off never coming back. To much would have been expected. Except for Plastic Ono and Imagine John had slipped but his ending made sure his legacy is totally enduring. Stacy Blumberg it’s really painful to think about because of where John and Paul both were at that point when he seemed ready to work with him again. I think they were both ready to make some music that was greater than the sum of the parts again 🙁

On Dick Cavett's show he said Paul was his best friend. I think he said "If I can't fight with my best friend, who can I fight with."
Except for comparing him to Yoko Ono.
They were Great friends. Imagine, no pun intended, what all the Beatles had to go through when the Band broke up, and to this day, in every interview, Paul is always asked about John and the Breakup. This has to be difficult, especially when your best friend is Dead.

Bless him.

John and Paul were a timeless partnership. Their back catalog speaks for itself.
Throughout it all, Paul looked up to John. From the '57 village fete to this moment. In the Get Back tapes, after George walks out and John hasn't shown up, they believe John has also quit the Beatles. Paul smiles and jokes, "And then there were two." If you ever read the old interviews of the late 60's, so often the journalist would stage questions in just the right way to lead discontention without their fingerprints, in other words cleverly stoking the flames, just constantly planting seeds of disunity to get a juicy story.

Actually that was Ringo. He was born in the Dingle.

It is clear John was gifted artist but also it is clear he was exceptionally bright.
In tears - beautiful to hear the often cynical, hard-shelled (but soft-hearted) John speaking so lovingly, really, about the boys and our Pauly, in particular. Thanks for posting this.

The things about this interview that make me happiest are 1, he and Paul are good. 2. He's happy that the others are doing good. It shows that no matter what all the press says he really did care about all of them.
Best to hear it from the horse's mouth rather than the media.
John was a genius and right when he saw Paul he recognized another one
so Yoko must be a genius too

Love John, miss him..I love the Beatles music, they really got things going for every rock band that came after them. I'm glad that John and Paul made their peace together. What a heavy load it would have been for all of them if they didn't make up before John was murdered. Peace & Love just as Ringo always says..That's all it takes is Peace & Love!
I think we all forget what a hard worker John was. Always writing a new song, new lyrics, new style, new look. And all for his audience! That's a very unselfish person.

I'm so glad with this little interview / compilation. It shows that John and Paul were soul brothers. As opposed to what almost every Beatles 'fan' here on UA-cam is writing.
Lovely man. "My friends are my friends". I believe you, man.
August 13, 1966 saw The Beatles at the Detroit Olympia-such a thrill. I have a Beatle room in my house full of items back to 1963-English! Beatle John
