Edit: I want to add one thing. I found the camera a touch annoying to control in hectic fights. Increasing sensitivity helps but if you go mad with the button mashing it’s easy for it to end up down at the wrong angle. Also, I would have liked to zoom it out further.
Sorry it’s a little late! I had to catch up a little after an unfortunate 4 year old Mario Kart issue with my save file! Haha! I hope you enjoy the review regardless! Mark
Honor these things are settings in he options menu
eclektric come again?
@@SwitchUpYt He's saying that there's camera zoom out options within the customization menu. Also, I noticed you stated that you wish there was a way to constantly have the dash/running always on. Well...there is, also within the customization section in options, lol. You just change Dash Options to Constant and once you select to run, you'll always be running, even if you stop and start moving again, until you deselect running off again.
RJ Yeah I heard they added that in the day one patch
RJ Either that or i totally missed it...you decide! Mark
“Sorry the review was so long...”
Please, I don’t think you need to apologize. This type of game merits a long review.
Well done sir.
Thanks appreciate that! Mark
"A giant, flag-wearing turtle with swim goggles on."
Say no more.. *takes out wallet*
Hahaha! Exactly! Mark
Allegedly, this and a Frog Knight were originally going to be part of the same game until SNES-CD (Play Station?) fell through.
He looks beautiful. Just how I remembered him.
There is 3 "different story line/bunch of antagonists and final boss". For having the most story element I recommand to play like this (Angela with Duran), (Charlotte with Kevin), (Lise with Hawkeye's). The third character that you choose is the less important.
Great point Tristan! Mark
Does that mean any of third member that is not a story duo will have no parts of his own story touched while you play?
sould be great once you did A/D/K and R/H/C combos, for instance, to have the Charlotte and Kevin story be as fresh as possible for a third run
@@tlotpwist3417 yes the third character will interact, but as I remember his story arc will not be full focus. Because the story work as a duo. (Angela, Duran) (Kevin, Charlotte) (Lise, Hawkeye).
Yeah and I got all Female, all male groups for my first 2 playthroughs...
Im sure ive seen this exact comment elsewhere. 😂
I’ve played the demo of this game over and over!! It’s just amazing! Brings me so many childhood memories of other games, I plan to get this and the Secret of Mana collection as well some time. I just fell in love with this game, even though I’ve never played it before the demo that came out.
Yeah it's even better in full, you'll enjoy it a lot! Mark
AdventQuest Same here. Demo sold me on the game.
If you pre order Trials of Mana from the eshop, you get collection of mana for around $11
Man, this really was a great, informative, and easy to follow review👍 You really have a knack for this stuff Mark, such a great channel 🙏🙏 See-yaaaaaaaaaa!!!
You’re able to change the sprint/dash settings in the options menu. Great review!
Why the hell couldnt they do this with secret of mana? Damn that pisses me off
They just messed it up. They're on the right track now. Mark
They learned from their mistakes.
@@SwitchUpYt Now they can do Chrono Trigger.
Pretty sure they are just testing the market with the first one.
This game is way better than Secret of Mana anyway and it's story, though basic, is better as well.
Have this one on preorder, love these switch JRPG's. If only I was a teenage again with all that time...
Yeah! Mark
I know right man hahaha
I’m gonna get this. You do such an outstanding job reviewing these games. I really feel like I know what I’m spending my money on when I make the purchase after watching one of these. Even if it’s a bit longer than some of the other vids, that’s a good thing. Keep throwing the heavy ones in the Arceus!
Hahahaha we will mate hahahaha
You two literally have the best reviews! Loved this one
Thanks, appreciate that! Mark
I always look for your reviews when I want to look at a game. Great review! I loved square enix back when they were square soft! I love RPGs! This is a must for me and seeing the review makes me really excited for it.
Great review as usual. I'm definitely going to be picking this up. I'm glad it's not too long like some other RPGs out there and the replay value seems high after you beat it.
Yeah Glen said exactly the same! Mark
I had an interest in this game when seeing it on the SNES many years after its release.
I had a keen interest seeing the remake and your impressions video.
I haven't played the demo (yet - that's for the this weekend) but if I like what I ply and from these review/impressions i feel this may be a must buy
The demo was far too easy and made the game feel like it would be no challenge at all. Many
I'm so getting this one for my birthday! Great job with the review.
This is going to be a good one. Loved Secret of Mana as a kid on SNES and have never been able to play this one up until now. Im in.
Yeah, they've done a good job. Mark
Same man! Wanted to play part 2 but it was for Japan only. 13 year old me (I think) was super bummed. I bought and am playing this now, it’s for him, and it’s glorious
Great review! The only thing that I took an issue with is that you said their is no run toggle, but there is an option for auto run.
After a few hours i turned off the minimap. It's just more fun to explore and memorize environmental details compared to blindly following icons. I can also recommend hard mode, it's pleasing to see the difficulty rising after the initial demo section.
Totally agree!
Played this alot of times on SNES in japanese. Tried so many different combination on different party and different class. It's a good game.. each character have 4 last class to choose from.. 2 light and 2 dark classes
Awesome review ! Thank you, already got it on preorder
Thanks mate
You can toggle run on to default in the options menu. You can also remap controls.
Like the look of this. Never played Secret of Mana though did make quite a few bucks picking up copies and selling them at the local Gamestation. They were giving between 50-70 quid for them. They ended up with about 10 copies. Didnt appear to sell any though. Excellent review as always.
Hahaha I like your style! Mark
Played the demo a bunch of times to see every characters' backstory and can't wait for the game to arrive. Angela is definitely gonna he my main character on my first playthrough.
Yeah it’s a very cool idea. Mark
I honestly wasn't expecting much out of this game after fully completing a game like Dragonquest XI. Trial of Mana exceeded my expectations and brought a great gaming experience even after DQ11 set the bar so high in my 42 years of gaming experience. Definitely worth the pricetag. Not to be underestimated and definitely not a game to pass up. Love it!
Hmm ok cool I may get it
Played the demo and I have the SOM collection so played the original. Impressed with the demo so look forward to this but when on sale. Cheers for the review Mark.
Cheers mate! It’s his escapism! Mark
You can change the dash option to automatic or permanent in the settings menu on the title screen.
Awesome game review. I just might be picking up this game for my new Switch later on
It's a very cheerful! Mark
I honestly want SE to expand on this game just a bit more, least enough for a sequel or something, especially after you beat the main story and are introduced to some extra content.
As folks said before, it's really nice to play again on harder difficulties with a new trio, challenging yourself with a new handicap and to be flexible in fights. Whether folks want to bring a tank or just go full on damage. It's just a bit of a shame/bit of missed opportunity to not even make it multi-player.
Just had to see the reviews though and I can agree through this video that after playing myself, this game is fun, has It's flaws but ain't enough to hinder a first time experience or replays.
2:20 sounds like a real tongue twister! Whose shoes you choose 😋. Great review!
Hahaha yeah! Mark
Prepurchased it last week and I can't wait. I love the story of the wildbeast/human boy.
Also just a comment, when the FPS thingy was on, maybe it was me but the orange letters weren't too good to see, maybe try white letters?
He's my favourite character. I love how he changed at night and does more damage etc. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt yeah when I saw he could transform in his bio I didn't doubt and picked him. I also love how he speaks sorta like tarzan. Like he knows how to speak but not too much because of his wild roots
Can you do a review of Help Will Come Tomorrow? It looks like This War of Mine which I like and still debating whether I should pick it up or not. Thanks!
I might well do that actually I’ve been looking at it! Mark
YAY! so looking forward to this one :3 will have to be next month for me, but that's not far off so i might just survive the wait ^.^
You picked exactly my team! that's amazing ;D
devaex a great combo
The original Seiken Densetsu 3 did actually release in the west in Collection of Mana roughly three years before this game came out. It was also simply titled 'Trials of Mana'.
11:06 That dancing turban shopkeeper is an internal meme in the Mana series, appearing in other Mana games as well. He is kinda like the Jeanne and Joy infinite twin nurses/policewomen meme in Pokemon. Not laziness :)
I really wish they kept the 2 player couch co-op like in the snes version. Total bummer but still a good game. They need to bring back couch co-op rpgs. It's always best to play with a friend. So much funner to me.
I preordered the game via Amazon but was informed that the game wouldn’t arrive until after May Day due to my purchase being a non-priority item (shrugs). Patience is a virtue.
Got it and started Angela/Duran run.
The music is getting me hooked already
There's some great track music on the mountains, I believe near Sylph? Sounds like classic old school anime I actually just let it play and do other shit on the side 😂😂
It's called Different Road if you're interested 😊😊
Thanks! I think I might just get the collection and play the original first.
That's not a bad idea! Mark
There is a way to set running as the default I believe.
I wasn’t expecting the visuals to pop so well!
They’re delightful! Mark
Was actually gonna pass on this one, but your review is changing my mind!
Those were my initial thoughts when I saw a new Square-Enix game priced lower than the standard triple A game price - It would be a short adventure! I did quite like the demo though so I may pick it up on sale. Though if Dragon Quest XI goes on sale first: I know which one is worth my money ^_^
Yeah good choice! Mark
In regards to swapping the left and right sticks... Did you try the Switch's new native controller remapping?
Oh man!! That should work! Nice one! Mark
Duran, Angela and Kevin. This is actually my favorite setup. Duran to heal, angela to magic attack and kevin to physical attack
*Was going to do housework* Ooohh new switchup videos!! Housework can wait 🤣🤣 I will be picking this up for sure at some point
Haha do both! Mark
Finally get a chance to watch a video ... sorry I have been a ghost.... we are in crazy times. I still support your channel 👍🏻🍺🍺.... still best switch content on u tube.. an this game looks fun... keep safe switch up x
Cheers Rich, how are you getting on??? Mark
SwitchUp yeah I’m alright mate.... you?
I think the length of the review was just fine.
And... I guess i'll be buying this one.
I just finished Secret of Mana Remake on my PS Vita, I think I'm going to get Trials of Mana Remake for my Switch Lite now as well.
I never finished this back when I was a kid since I only rented it. Maybe now is the time?
Reminds me of the new dragon quest that just came out, but not as large or side missions, I loved dragon quest, was 10/10 for me
xwers1234 Def not DQXI.
Yeah the visuals and simplicity are similar I prefer this combat personally but Dragon quest was much more open and free. Mark
Agree. Still nothing has surpassed DQ11 for me. Someone asked how they can compare this to DQ. Um ya really can't. 😂😂
DQ11 was amazing
There are some aspects here that are very similar to DQ11. That mana tree looks a lot like yggdrasil. That part where you find those little plants is scarily similar to the mini medals. Even riding the boat seems similar to when you're riding Sylvando's boat 😂 But I guess Square Enix made both games so 🤷♂️ DQ11 is amazing
In the options menu you can set it to auto run
I'm still working my way through Dragon Quest XI, this game should be on sale by time I've finished :)
How is that game? I'm always weary of picking up another turn-based JRPG but I've heard really good things about it, especially with regards to the story. Also do you find it to be grindy?
@@erikl9842 I'm enjoying it, what I like about this game is you get to choose if you want to battle rather than have random battles every few steps. Good story too, definitely recommend.
@@erikl9842 it's very charming and not at all Grindy. The game is paced extremely well and the only time I grinded was in preparation for the final post game challenge boss
Hey, Mark, does the frame-rate dip below 30-fps often when playing it in handheld mode? I'm a bit concerned about his. Hope to hear from you. Thanks!
No it’s been great! Mark
3:00 Dont know about the switch, but the PC version has both auto sprint and permanent sprint toggle options.
videotroll72 yeah this option is on the switch as well. Not sure if he missed it completely or this feature was added later after the review copy’s were sent out 🤷🏻♂️
In my Trials of Mana Remake, I can toggle sprint. There's a little grey Sprint icon in the bottom of the screen and when I activate sprint it goes green. I only press the button once.
Thanks. Not to give ya a big head, but I have been waiting on you for thus review 😃
Appreciate it and so does my big head! Mark
The demo was great and I have just finished FF7Remake so think ill pick this up now!
I will say I'm kind of happy they didn't add side quests. The original game, while linear, was always very well done and you could spend a lot of time in areas. They expanded the areas very well also. The hand holding may have shortened the game honestly, as in the original, there were certain NPCs you had to talk to that progress the story, that's why they have the stars over their heads now. They balanced the game REALLY well also. Angela was perfectly balanced, as she used to be able to destroy anything in her path in the original due to being able to pump int to gain her spells. They balanced her perfectly I'd say by spreading her spells around through the stats. The best stat for her(int) provides probably the worst spells, which is a perfect balance, whereas the best spells are mainly into Spirit. I was wondering how they would balance her and I think they did a bang up job. Kevin on the other hand still seems to be as busted so far.
As for the difficulty, I have to say I almost died to the wall myself and I was playing normal at the time(forgot to switch to hard as this was my FIRST save from the demo).
As for the music, I can only think of one bad track honestly. And it's the one you put up. Everything else as far as I can remember was amazing. The music of this game could easily get someone into it alone.
Btw the weapons DO change, though albeit not much early on. Well Angela's weapons change quite drastically.
While the Japanese voices might be phenomenal for you, the English voices sound like they're speaking v e r y s l o w l y, and sound like in some instances they had to read verbatim, a script written by someone who's English is not a natural speaking language for them (ie: referring to a location as Holy City Wendel in the same way someone in Canada wouldn't say, "Capital Of Alberta Edmonton"), while in other instances they sound like they could make something up and speak it more naturally (ie: Angela's "I love shopping!" When buying new equipment she can use). Another thing was how they pronounce "Mana" by seemingly running backwards through a field of vowels. Normally it's either pronounced with a short or long A-sound, but this was the first time I'd heard it pronounced "Myieana".
I'm getting serious Yss 8 vibes from this, which is no bad thing at all.
Same here bro that's why I bought it
@Char Aznable your comment is nowhere near worth caring about 🤣
Great review 👍
I find it odd that game remakes criticized for not staying faithful to the original can then be criticized for being too faithful to the original. NPCs looking identical was in the original. The initial linearity before access to the class change was in the original too.
I mentioned EXACTLY that point “was it intention etc etc or lazy, you decide” it was more an observation really. Mark
The IGN review sounds eerily similar to this one, but lacking the spirit. Great job.
That’s cool! Annoying that they were out first! I could have been the next Boomstick Gaming! I’ll have a watch if there one I’m guessing they liked it? Mark
The planting system sounds straight out of _Earthlock._
Those goggles are gonna catch on, mark my words ! #switchup 😄 I’ll eventually pick this up. I like the look, color palette, music, and the fact it has action.
Laura .
I get the sense that a game that combined elements of this and Baldur's Gate would make for a super sweet RPG.
Local co-op? I played this with my little bro back in the days. Would have liked to hear about this point.
No single I'm afraid
Thx for the quick reply, thats too bad i see it as a missed opportunity. For me it was a main feature back in the days.
I played switch, ps4 and pc demo. I really don't like the frame rate on the switch, Looks good, and if you don't mind it, it's really an excellent game. Playing the old version for the second time, just a nice game to play.
There is an option to always have the dash engaged. I changed this option and never looked back.
I thought for sure in the demo your weapons did change visually.
They do change ever so slightly, it's just not enough and armour and accessories do literally nothing to your look... Shame. Mark
I didnt mind the length. I rather the extra details if warrented.
I played the demo and enjoyed it enough to consider picking it up at launch. Unfortunately the asking price just feels too steep for what looks like a medium budget title from a decade ago.I'm very much impressed however by a lot about the production. The soundtrack (both 16 bit and remake OSTs), the amount of voice acting, the general art direction, fidelity to the original, atmosphere, pacing, combat, etc. Multiplatform and day one demo really speak to Squenix's confidence in the release and it's absolutely worth a look, but I don't think you can get away with asking $50 AND stripping multiplayer from an otherwise remarkably faithful 2020 reimagining of an ARPG classic when shared experiences have become more of a core aspect of game design than ever before. I understand it's a niche product, but FF7R was available for preorder for less than the MSRP on this and most people in the states didnt get to make nostalgia for this in the 90s *bitter*. Also please give FF6 or Chrono Trigger the FF7R treatment but leave Nomura off the project.
Any chance any one that has played this can let me know if there are separate audio sliders for voice and music?
2:28 ".. who's shoes you choose.."
Not making it easy on yourself with the script there, are ya?
There are six characters. But they used my ultimate weakness. Sassy purple-haired cute girl mage.
I’ll struggle to not pick Angela in any future playthrough.
Does he not know you can change dash to constant in the options?
The shopkeepers really did that in the original as well, it was a nice touch.
MsArilyn very cool!
Is this Mana worth a summoning spell, or should you just cast ;) it away? Let’s find out!
I would have got you to write it! Mark
SwitchUp thanks Mark, but you and Glenn do a bang up job!
Buying this solely for the turtle with goggles
First ! Was waiting on your review of this one !
Laura .
Enjoy! Mark
20 hours gameplay for 60 bucks not a good deal for me
It’s got a decent chunk of post game, I’m just not allowed to talk about it...
i'm gonna tell all you guys and gals a secret -
the gamecube controller's layout? it's perfect for this game.
Oh i been waiting for this one. Settling down with a coffee, before parting with £45. The demo was great. My little gripes were 30fps but.. expected with an rpg. The bigger gripe, was the camera on the fights.. even with lock on..the camera just could not keep up with where i wanted to point it. I have always played these games without lock, as i find many hits on your character are 'lock hits'. You can forget being out of lock, camera is just broken then. However your stress test shows 95 percent solid performance and I agree with you, it looks so good in handheld.
You’ve reminded me an area I missed and wanted to talk about. The camera can be a little annoying in combat still, it ends up dropping too low and needs to zoom out more. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt needs a patch for sure mate.
A new class?! For every character?! I hope they start remaking the SaGa series eventually. Romancing SaGa and SaGa Frontier are among my favorite RPG series.
I’m not allowed to say anymore... sorry. Mark
Been playing the demo and I love it. It's much more enjoyable than dragon quest 11s for me.
Im in deep deep shi$... Been a ps4 player for a long time of course i own 3ds a many games but i didn't get a switch until now and dammmm i have a lot to play... Pokemon BOTW Astral chain Xenoblade and now I want to get this... 🤪🤪🤪 My wife and kid will be looking for me when I'm missing with my switch..
Hahaha
I'm in the Sam's boat! I got my switch in December and I'm up to my neck in all the different games that I bought and want to play!! The Switch is awesome!!
ughhh i really want this game but its too expensive for me rn 😭😭😭
After this review... yes!!! I’ll buy it.
Fantastic review for one of of the most anticipated games on the year on the Switch.
Thanks appreciate that! Mark
This is a yes for as well as sunless sea.
Both excellent games! Mark
It stays pretty true to the original, I just wish the frame rate is better.
Trials of Marna. 😝Great review guys.
lol yeah! Mark
Ill be getting this!!!
woah, the game looks really interesting
I would say hands down dragon quest 11.
Firstly try both the demos and get a feel for what you like more. Dragon Quest pros for me were: amazing enemies, amazing sound of combat and most areas, turn based combat, pleasant storyline and pacing, large story to be had, decent end game, enjoyable characters and can play the game in 2D (nice option)
Now I haven't played trials of mana outside of the demo so I can't say. From what I've seen, dang they'd need a miracle for this to be better then dragon quest 11. I'd say this is one of the bear recent jrpgs and by a large margin. Go watch sone review for deets, kotaku do a couple 👍
Dragon Quest although I prefer the combat and music here. Mark
ok, thanks for the input guys. Gonna get the dragon quest after this
DQ11 for sure. I'm 106 hours in and still working through it. I'm at the post game and I'm telling you, this game does not stop getting better and better! SO many twists and exciting turns to keep you on your toes! I absolutely cant get enough of DQ11.
I played Seiken Densetsu 3 over a decade ago and absolutely loved it. Easily one of the best games of the SNES generation. I was concerned about this remake when it was announced, especially after that less than mediocre Secret of Mana 3D remake. I did enjoy the demo, minus some unfortunately timed deep cleavage shots right in front of my wife and kids 😮 so I'm pretty excited to play the full game.
anyone know how long it takes to beat the game?
The game looks VERY similar to Dragon Quest 11. Thanks for the video Switchup, another high quality presentation for you guys.
Caid Johnson completely different, this is real time action RPG, not turn based
@@jase87 I'd say it has a similar "feel" but you're right combat and some mechanics are different. Mark
@@jase87 yeah the combat is real-time, but a lot of the game looks like it'd feel very similar to DQ11, not to mention how similar they look. It almost looks like they used DQ11 as the foundation for this game.
@@SwitchUpYt similar feel, that about sums up my impressions of the game, from what I saw in your video.
Caid Johnson I see what you mean. It’s the same unreal engine and yeah art direction is similar. I guess because I played the original, i know it’s very different. It’s like Final Fantasy 7 vs FFXIII or any other recent real time FFs, looks similar but one is turn based one is not, you get the idea. Also the score is PHONOMENAL, same quality or better than any JRPGs I’ve played
Will give it a shot
should I get this for my ps4 or my switch lite
This is a Switch Light win - everything is so slick and polished! Mark
