In Italian we have the same distinction between love from friends/family (ti voglio bene) land romantic love (ti amo) 🥰 I like this peculiarity as well
Thanks a lot Miss Eszter... I love the way you teach... makes your difficult language easy to learn... Please, don't get bored doing it for everyone, like me, - who wants to learn how to speak Hungarian... Two thumbs up, for your efforts and dedication too......
Azt hiszem, ez teszi sok értelme, hogy a magyar két szó a szerelem, mert ott tényleg két részre oszthatók. Ez nagyon hasznos, és segíthet megelőzni zavart!
I wish I had watched your videos before I visited my family in Hungary in May of 2017. Especially, those that live in the countryside in Monaj. Hopefully going back in 2020 & will impress everyone!!!
This is awesome being a Hungarian first born in Canada my parents never taught the home language to me I picked a few words and phrases but I had no idea how challenging it can be. Thank you one day I will travel to Budapest and Koszeg
I am of Hungarian descent. My grandparents came to the U.S. in 1909 and 1910 settled in Trenton, NJ. My father was born in 1918. He died in 2009 at the age of 92. He was raised by his uncle, Nicholas Horvath. My dad used to visit him in Trenton every Sunday and they only spoke Hungarian. I never had an opportunity to learn, but during my career I learned Russian, Ukrainian, Indonesian, Thai, and Tagalog. So I have an ear for languages. My son and I are traveling to Hungary this summer and one trip outside Budapest is to Heves megye, where my grandfather was born in 1892, and to Biel in Solvakia, where my grandmother was born in 1895. I would really like to learn as much Hungarian as I can. I've found your You Tube videos very useful. I live in southeast Connecticut and would like to find someone to give me personal lessons. Thanks for your videos.
You are so cute! Growing up here as an American kid and having Hungarian as my first language, it's been second nature, and I've tried for years to have my friends learn how to say certain words and it's futile... But fun for me! Thank you. I love this!
Hello! This is the third video today! Thats enough for today! I will practise all the phrases you have given me and progress later.I am enjoying the course so far,Thank you
Szia! Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful. I am from México and had the chance to live for almost a month in Pécs, Hungary. I really enjoyed that trip and want to be there again, and put in practice all those expressions xD.
Szia! I really love your videos with basic Hungarian phrases. I am from Denmark and I am very interested in foreign languages, including Hungarian, (absolute beginner) which I find interesting because it is so different from the other languages I study. I very much hope that you will continue to make new videos.
Szia Eszter, orulok hogy tolal kustung. Your videos are really helpful and I just wanted to help you with something. For BRITISH people learning Hungarian, a good example for the sound in Vagy would be the sound in Dew (like on the grass early in the morning) In English we pronounce this as Dyew (Americans would pronounce it as Dew) I hope this helps, as English people from Britain will find this sound comparison very helpful. Vizlat :-)
Many thanks for this video (and the previous too); the way you explain hungarian is excellent! Thanks a lot! Will try to practise some of hungarian tomorrow in Budapest ;)
Great video, Dear Eszter! . You asked for suggestions? Please make a video that shows how to argue with your wife in Hungarian, and include the things that she is likely to say, such as ... oh ... 'You're not right' (insane) 'You just think you know what is what', and 'Who made you so high and mighty? 'If you ain't careful, you can pack your bags and leave!' 'You and whose army is gonna make me!' Etc, etc.... :)))
Szia! I'd like to tell you that I'm impressed by the fact that you use 2 words to express "love", because we use 2 words in Greek too!! I thought that we were the only nation... Αγάπη & έρωτας... The first represent something deeper, such as the love for the family and the second is referred to passion and crush... That's all folks!!! ^_^ Köszönöm!
Αγάπη Παπ erotic.. we have Erotikus... more close to sexual attraction... Szeretet loving a family member, friend ... Szerelem the deeply love.. But!!When we want to tell our girlfriend that we love her.. we say :"SzereTlek" = I love you.. or "SzereLMes vagyok beléd" = I am in Love with you!
Hello everyone! It's interesting fact regarding word LOVE.I'm Ukrainian and since I was a child I thought that Ukrainian language is the only one with two meanings of word LOVE!We have a word "Любов" it's like in Hungarian "Szeretet" and "Кохання" like "Szerelem".So as I see we are not alone)))!!!
Hi, very good videos...You do know how to take the appropriate time in between sounds and also how you translate each phrase...Not important though, just FYI, Spanish also has 2 words for 'love' (Te quiero & te amo)
Dear Eszter... could u please do one more video like this one? .. My boyfriend from Hungary... and I would like to surprise him) thank u) u looks great!!!) it can be anykind of words or short sentence
Jo estet, Eszter! We are enjoying your videos on learning basic Hungarian phrases. However, the answers to them would be useful as well. What about useful Hungarianwords/phrases for English speaking house hunters in Hungary, such as words for bedroom, sitting/living room/bathroom etc. Many thanks. Koszonom.
Thanks. Been using Duolingo and Hungarian101pod, but your prononciation tips are very useful. It would be nice to have some more examples with similar vowels, like gjönyörü (with commas). For example, the difference between vowels with double dots and double commas. Does the double comma simply mean a double dots that's pronounced longer ?
Szia! Ha még csinálsz részeket arra gondoltam ,hogy annak aki nem tud magyarul annak sokat segítene ha az Ó Ő Ö Ú Ű Ü É Á Í magánhangzókat elmagyaráznád. Tudom párat elmondtál de jó lenne ezeket összegyűjteni! :)
+Ceglédy Mohna Keep repeating "ÁRVÍZTŰRŐ TÜKÖRFÚRÓGÉP" This concoction actually makes sense ('a flood-proof mirror boring machine') and contains all umlauts. This expression is used to test screens/printers - do they display/print accent marks correctly?
My language is quite similar when you say things, so it's easy for me to say the ö, gy , sz However in my language we say SZ normally not like in Hungarian like a S Thank you for the great lessons :)
You are GREAT! and if I could leave a voice comment I would tell you "your beautiful" as I would practice for you ;) keep the video's coming this is best explaining of these terms I have seen or heard so far, very helpful to us foreigners....
Good video. You speak English very well and I am learning Hungarian from you. Koszi! One thing: in the annotation at 5:09, it should be "lighting". Please keep making videos
i love your videos, here in México we also have 2 words to say or use love , so is more easy for me jajja thnks for that, also the "ny" for you, sounds like the letter "ñ" for us :3
Find your videos very helpful because I would like to learn a bit of Hungarian so I can understand my boyfriends family :) be great if you could make more videos
We have a Hungarian girl playing in out township game. Is there anyway we can type out message & she will understand. (If it could come up in her language) Can we type in English & her answer will come to her in hungarian) her's would come back in English? We have several languages on our game that works that way but not Hungarian. It would make it so much better for her & the rest of us.
So this whole time my last name- chohany, (maiden name), is pronounced chohan-ya? Ive heard the y was added after my great grandparents came to america but maybe its just not supposed to be prounced?
These are great videos! Thank you for posting them. Just a note on the "gy" in Humgarian: it's what linguists call a voiced palatal plosive, which we really don't ever use in English, that I know of. This means that the back of the tongue touches further forward in the mouth than with a regular English "g". One way to practice it is to try to say "guh" but slide the tongue forward a little bit. It makes it sound more like a cross between "guh" and "yuh".
I really struggle pronouncing vogy, find it a bit easier now though when I see "hogy vogy" I read it as "hoyg voyg" and seems to sound a bit more like it's supposed to when I say it like that I hope.
Hi Ezti, I love your videos! they are very helpful, I am moving to Hungary in 2 and half months, and my boyfriend was teasing me if I learnt to say diamond engagement ring in Hungarian he would marry me...I like challenges and this is a nice one...I think i pronounce it perfectly but I have no one that could tell me if its right or not (except my boyfriend) could you help me? thank you!!!
+Paulina Castaneda If yor word is 'gyémánt eljegyzési gyűrű' than, probably this'll be good too: translate.google.hu/#hu/en/gy%C3%A9m%C3%A1nt%20eljegyz%C3%A9si%20gy%C5%B1r%C5%B1 despite being "google-translate", it is a rather realistic pronunciation.
I know he is mean! Jajajajaja the problem is that according to me i pronounce it well, but i have no one else that's objective enough to tell me if its well pronunced or not jajajaja
If I was single and young I would use these phrases. So I will absorb the pronunciation. Also you are "Gyonyoru vagy" (my keyboard does not have the dot and commas) I will say this to my wife and daughter in law.
In Italian we have the same distinction between love from friends/family (ti voglio bene) land romantic love (ti amo) 🥰 I like this peculiarity as well

I like the idea of your language having two forms to for the word "love"
Just for helping... also Eszti! :) In my view the "gy" sound reminds me, or is similar to the english words : DUring, DUke, AnDREW, MountainDEW,

Thank you, köszönöm!! :-))

Hungarian language has no grammatical gender, so it's the same for men and women.

A "gy"-t az angolok talán az angol "Duke" szóban mondják ki legjobban véleményem szerint!
Nagyon tetszel nekem 😜

And what about "szeretlek"?
'ny' is Spanish 'ñ' sound, like in the word jalapeño.
more videos please sweet lady
English word "judge" may explain the hungarian 'gy'.
If I was single and young I would use these phrases. So I will absorb the pronunciation. Also you are "Gyonyoru vagy" (my keyboard does not have the dot and commas) I will say this to my wife and daughter in law.
Szerelem a motorom ??
When I go to Budapest in a few months, I'm gonna be a real ladies man!
yes it is good but I need the name of places
És gyönyörü vagy is fiatal holgy😉😊
How do you say please?
Please = Kérlek
suzic76 "KÉR+lek SzÉP+en" = "kérlek szépen".. kér=ask, +lek=conjugation..you, SzÉP = beautiful, +en = -lly... I am asking You Beautifully...
We need Hungarian girls like you in Australia 😉
