    The only thing that I'd change is to say the Hungarian word very very slowly. And give us a chance to pronounce it. Maybe say,"repeat after me" and then say it one syllable at a time.

    Örvendek was my favourite. In the middle of a trip to the Baltics, we stopped by in Hungary for two days and met a young man in the tram. An old man saw us talking to the young Hungarian and started dancing for us. That was so sweet, and I couldn't say anything. Örvendek would have been something I could have had prepared easily for any situation to be nice.

    • @tripcode1722
      @tripcode1722 5 років тому +8

      It's kind of a joke. It's used anytime Hungary comes up in a post or something online. Hungary is often an afterthought in comparison to other countries, so when it is mentioned, this phrase is used by a Hungarian and usually other Hungarians will jump in talking about said boiler in order to continue the joke. I believe it comes from a longer joke that's told in Hungary, but online, it's an inside joke for Hungarians as a kind of "finally, someone mentioned us!".

    Nice introduction to Hungarian. I was born in the USA but my dad came from Hungary. He did not speak to me in Hungarian so I could learn it when I was young. A big mistake because Hungarian is difficult for me to learn now as an adult.

      Same! Mother never spoke Hungarian . I never heard my Grandmother speak it. But she had a heavy accent. I loved it!
      I would love to learn Hungarian because it’s part of my heritage. Also I could read the many letters that have been written to my mother’s family. I don’t know much about their life before coming to US. I know it was difficult. Culture shock . .
      I had a book I got from my mom, learn to speak Hungarian.
      It started with the alphabet and pronunciation-
      That was enough to make my head spin!
      But I absolutely think it’s a beautiful language.

    • @ginismoja2459
      @ginismoja2459 4 роки тому +5

      Isn't it obvious? You don't speak formally with kids. You wouldn't say “Good day” to a child, you'd probably say “Hey” or something like that.

    • @carbonBacska
      @carbonBacska 4 роки тому +4

      It is simple. Between friends or in the same social group, we use friendly greetings. For example helló, szia, szerbusz, szervusz, jó éjszakát (good night). You should use good morning (jó reggelt) or good afternoon (jó napot or szép napot) or good evening (jó estét) or see you later (viszontlátásra) at the street, in the office, in the shop.

    • @carbonBacska
      @carbonBacska 4 роки тому +4

      If you use formal or official greeting for friends it will add more meaning for the situation.
      About the kids, You need to use the friendly form when you meet with them except for helló. And use bravely their name. For example szia Adam, szerbusz Peter, szia Anna, szia, szerbusz etc. And do not forget to learn plural form. :D

I know it"s not easy to learn the second hardest language, but this chanel tell it so nicely. I was so lucky to learn hungarian first from my parents when I was born and after that English, because it's easier. Good luck for everybody! :) Sok sikert kívánok mindenkinek!

    I`ve just started learning Hungarian! And I consider it as a personal challenge: Learning this difficult language step by step. The sentences that called my attention : Visontlátásra, Elnézést, Várj egy pillanatot , Örvendek, Jó éjszakát..... All these sentences sound weird to me. My native language is Portuguese from Brazil.

      The above questions fit practically to children, among adults they are a bit crude. Among educated people: "Kihez van szerencsém?" (word by word: Whom I have luck to? or:"Szabad a(z Ön) nevét?" ( May I know your name? ) or "Kit tisztelhetek Önben?" (= Who may I respect in you?) It depends on the situation which form will be the best. E. g the last one is the most polite.

      You can say: A legjobbakat kívánom Önnek! - Best wishes to you! or A legjobbakat kívánom Önöknek! - (you as second person of plural).
      A second, simpler way is to say All the best! - Minden jót!

    YAY, my favourite expression was: "Mi a neved/mi a neve??" LOL, I never ever ask something like that, despite its about a dog or cat or some animal... The right question is; "Hogy hívnak? / Hogy hívják Önt?" :D ...and there were some other mistakes, too :( Nevertheless, awesome vid and good to see that so many ppl are interested in the Hungarian language.

      You can come across "Mi a neve?" - like when the police ask your name, they will most probably use this, or in government offices. A very official form, but definitely not a mistake.

    Many thanks I found this very useful!! However, only one minor request please if you can please “enunciate” your words a bit more at the start, this is very helpful to us novice Hungarian students. I am only learning because I am now in my fourth year of visiting for dental treatment and it seems very bad to have been there so many times and not attempted to learn the language. Otherwise I will just have to revert to my well trusted Doooo Yooooouuu Spur-eeeaak En -ger-lish?

    What about "Jó estét"? It's used from around 5 PM until late in the night when you meet somebody.

      xbqchm Jó estét én is hiányoltam. A jó reggeltel pedig az a helyzet, hogy ha 11 órakkor is így köszönnénk biztos, hogy megszólnának, hogy "na ez is jó sokáig (döglött) aludt".

    Hi Lena, I got a translation of "pleased to meet you" from that "google translate" thing and I wrote out, phonetically what it said. The result was "ooh roo loo ka tah lah koh zahsh nak". All my own phonetics. Does this phrase really mean what it claims, or was the google translate website inaccurate?

      google translate isn't really accurate.

    But... you need to understand the finely-tuned social level system that is intrinsically built into the Hungarian language (kind of like Japanese). Some of these phrases are weird, condescending, sarcastic or even directly offending in the wrong context or with the wrong emphasis. I am still learning, but this is by far the most tricky part of learning Hungarian.
