  • In 1984, after Dallas Cowboys WR Butch Johnson got traded to the Houston Oilers, he was fed up with the whole situation. So he devised a plan to intentionally stink so he could be traded to his preferred destination, the Denver Broncos. And somehow, it worked. This is the story behind the player who intentionally stopped trying so his team would have no choice but to trade him away, and the story behind one of the best self-sabotages in NFL history

      Would you consider a video about how seriously teams used to take preseason? Jerry Glanville tells a story on Joel Schmidt’s top 100 of all time about Schmidt’s eye getting cut & being told to go back into the game after it was stitched. I remember Jack Lambert breaking an arm in the I think a 1982 preseason game. MAJOR HISTORICAL FOOTNOTE: It can be argued that Butch Johnson indirectly helped the Cowboys to later win 3 Super Bowls. The Cowboys used the fifth round pick, from the Oilers in the Butch Johnson trade, to choose Hershel Walker. A few years later, Walker was traded by Jimmy Johnson for a slew of draft picks that were eventually used on players like Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson, Alvin Harper, etc. BTW, I thought Butch Johnson was a great third receiver. He was temperamental, yes; but he also wanted to win.

    • @Lawomenshoops
      @Lawomenshoops 3 роки тому +4

      The 1990 Vikings draft pick that was traded to Dallas was used to select Eric Green. Emmitt Smith was drafted with the Steelers pick, that Dallas acquired when they traded the Vikings picks and other picks to the Steelers.
      The draft pick used to draft Alvin Harper was the Cowboys' own pick. It had nothing to do with the Vikings deal.
      The draft pick used to draft Darren Woodson was the Patriots pick. That Dallas acquired using some of the picks from the Vikings deal.
      These are the players drafted with the Vikings 1st round picks that were traded to Dallas in the Walker deal. None of these players were selected by Dallas.

    Butch’s catch in the Superbowl against the Broncos sent the NFL into a still-unfinished quest to define a “catch”.

    • @pjtheory
      @pjtheory 3 роки тому +1

      No, it didn't. There was no controversy surrounding Johnson's touchdown catch in Super Bowl 12 because unlike Dez Bryant's overturned catch against the Packers, the league followed the the catch rules to the letter (e.g., possession over the goal line equals touchdown) in SB 12. Tom Brookshier and Pat Summerall said as much during the game and Brookshire explained to the audience why Johnson's catch was ruled a touchdown. In Bryant's case, it should have been ruled a catch because he clearly had possession AND he made a "football move" (e.g., taking 3 steps with possession of the ball) prior to going to the ground. Unlike Johnson's catch in Super Bowl 12, however, the NFL ignored their own rules and focused on a portion of the rule that involved having possession after going to the ground. Howie Long called out Dean Blandino for ignoring both the possession and football move portions of the rule.

    • @tomgeorge7281

    By 1981, Johnson had a legitimate beef about not being a starter. Due to early season injuries to Tony Hill, Johnson got his first taste of being a starting wide receiver and he took full advantage of that opportunity. In the first half of the 1981 season, Johnson was the team's most productive wide receiver, yet he was sent to the bench once Hill was completely healthy. It was no secret that Drew Pearson was one of Landry's favorite players, so Johnson's production could go hang as long as Pearson and Hill were healthy. Landry had a penchant for replacing outspoken/more productive players with even tempered foot soldiers. The most egregious example of this thought process was when Landry replaced HOF CB Herb Adderly with, ahem, CB, yes, CB Charlie Waters. In the end, Butch Johnson will be remembered for making big plays (e.g., touchdown catches in Super Bowl 12, Super Bowl 13, 1980 NFC Wildcard Playoffs, 1982 NFC Championship Game) on the biggest stage.

    • @eugenedenbrook322

      I mean, didn't Adderly retire? Had to replace him with someone...

    • @pjtheory
      @pjtheory 3 роки тому

      @@eugenedenbrook322 It was the timing of Landry's decision that was the issue. Adderly was traded to the Cowboys prior to the 1970 season, and his inclusion resulted in the Cowboys having the best secondary (e.g., HOF CB Mel Renfro, HOF CB Herb Adderly, HOF S Cliff Harris, 5 time Pro Bowl S Cornell Green) in their storied history. It's no wonder that after Adderly was added to the Doomsday Defense, the Cowboys went to back to back Super Bowls with their 2nd Super Bowl appearance resulting in the Cowboy's 1st Super Bowl title. So, heading into the 1972 season, logic would dictate that the Cowboys would keep this incredible secondary intact, but Landry's sometimes bizarre thought process brought that scenario to a quick end. Adderly was an outspoken team leader and Landry was never keen on an African-American player being outspoken. Landry's reaction was to start former college QB Charlie Waters at CB over Adderly and that decision was a major reason why the Cowboy's didn't appear in a 3rd straight Super Bowl appearance. Waters was too slow to play CB, and in the NFC Championship Game, Redskins WR Charley Taylor ate him alive and the Cowboys got blown out 26-3.

    I did a little research on the trade to Houston. It wasn't a matter of Landry being petty trading Butch to Houston instead of his preferred destination. Landry made the deal because he thought it would benefit the Cowboys. Houston had a higher 2nd round pick than the Broncos and Raiders had and it allowed Dallas to draft higher. Landry had an aging roster and opportunity to pick higher in the 2nd was too good to pass up. Landry couldn't just give Butch Johnson away. The Broncos wouldn't want to trade down because a year ago they traded their 1984 1st rounder to the Colts for Elway. So it didn't make sense for them to trade down further in the 2nd Round. As for the Raiders, they were picking last in each round because they were the Super Bowl Champs. The Oilers had acquired an additional 2nd rounder from Minnesota for Archie Manning and Dave Casper and already had a high 2nd rounder for going 2-14. So they could afford to trade down with the Cowboys while getting a receiver like Butch Johnson who they thought would give newly signed Warren Moon an experienced target to throw to in his NFL debut. The Cowboys get a receiver in Renfro who was okay with being a 3rd receiver and go from picking 26th to 12th in the 2nd round.

      I almost forgot. The Cowboys also got a 5th rounder in 1985. They ended up using it on a running back named Herschel Walker. Not too shabby of a player to be named later.

    • @Lawomenshoops
      @Lawomenshoops 3 роки тому +1

      It could be argued that Landry was being petty. This trade was made in April of 84. So, the draft order was already set. The Oilers had picks #29 and #40, Broncos pick #46 in the 2nd round. The Oilers traded pick #40 to the Cowboys. That's only 6 spots difference from the Broncos. Sure, maybe the Broncos didn't want to trade away their 2nd rounder. Yes, Landry wanted the higher pick. But, then Landry drafted a bust, Victor Scott with that pick!
      But, then again, the Broncos, and all teams, knew they had the USFL Supplemental Draft coming up too. But, that didn't mean just because you drafted somebody in that supplemental draft, that player was coming right away.

    • @greezythumb
      @greezythumb 3 роки тому +4

      @@Lawomenshoops Yes, Landry drafted a bust. You can do all the research, analysing, testing, timing and film study you want, there is no such thing as can't lose players. They are all a hope and a prayer. Hope that they can adjust to the pro game and pray you have the right system and supporting cast for them to live up to their potential.
      Landry's problem was he was a micro-manager and a stickler for certain behavior because of his Christian values. As the game became faster and more acrobatic, players with flair started to grab attention and wanted attention. Landry was very conservative and he and this new culture clashed. He also clashed with Dorsett because he wanted the ball more but Landry was only protecting his health as Dorsett himself realized that Landry was right and admitted to it. Landry also clashed with Hollywood Henderson about his behavior. Landry may have been many things but petty isn't one of them. He was a guy that just had certain standards. Today, I can say, both sides were right and wrong. Landry should have allowed a certain amount of freedom, but at the same time, be there to talk to those young guys so they didn't go too far. He even said this himself and even apologized to Hollywood for cutting him seeing as how it has such an adverse affect on him. But Landry showed up uninvited to Henderson 10 years sobriety party to speak on how he was wrong and apologized to Hollywood for cutting him instead of helping him as he spoke at the podium. Landry was a really humble man that got caught in the middle of a culture shock. Landry did what was best for Dallas in trading Butch to Houston for a better draft position. Victor being a bust is really irrelevant to the trade itself.

He crosses the goal line with control. 3. As soon as his elbow tips the ground the play is technically over. Edit: I typed this on Butch Johnson's birthday. 🎂

    That touchdown "catch" was ridiculous bad. How could that ref determine it was a catch? All you had to do was get 2 hands on the ball for a fraction of a second?

      The Broncos had no chance in that Game, and, it just goes to show what a fraud the Cowboys were, they beat a Dolphins team that wasn't, yet, ready, and, a, flash-in-the-pan, Broncos team.
