Dallas Cowboys QB Danny White may have been the epitome of a perfect teammate. In a 1988 NFL game against the Atlanta Falcons, even though White was on the bench, as Tom Landry started Steve Pelluer, White may have been the MVP of the game without playing a single snap. This is the story behind White's incredible team-first spirit, and the moment that might exemplify his storied career

Danny White never got the recognition he deserved. Loved him as a player and a coach with the AFL with Arizona and Utah . Met him when he was coaching Utah and he was the nicest guy.
Danny was a two sport star at Arizona State, winning the WAC twice, winning a Fiesta Bowl title, and also playing third base on an ASU Baseball Team that was a perennial entrant in the College World Series.
@@stuartdollar9912 Very true, Stu. I 4got that ASU was in the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) @ that time (they l8r joined the PAC 8/10/12).
Thanks cool to know.
You had to mention the AFL lol. I love me some Coach White with Hunkie Cooper and Sherdrick Bonner with the Rattlers
I would go as far to say that Danny White was the most under rated qb in franchise history and top 3 under rated qb's of the NFL for the past 40 years. 3 consecutive nfc championship game appearances is no easy task and today's young Cowboy fans don't even know who he was for the most part. I would like to add that he was 1 play from beating Joe Montana in the 81 nfc championship game. This weekend is 40 years dark anniversary of " the catch" btw, and we play the 49ers TODAY , who could have scripted this better? amazing!
Very underrated QB. 3 consecutive NFC Championship appearances despite the pressure of following Roger Staubach. He did his job. His teammates didn't always do theirs.
@Matt Joseph and JedForge I totally agree with you. People forget that this team was slowly devolving. From the glory days of Staubach, Pearson and Dorsett. It’s obvious that OLINE was going down the tubes. Too bad.
Yes !!! People remember the catch but , Danny took his team to midfield with seconds remaining looking to win the game with a field goal but a blown block by his offensive line caused a sack & fumble ,,, I believe D,White would have led Dallas to a victory over Cincinnati changing how people perceive him.
@@anthonymontenaro2299 totally agree with you on that.
Danny White had the misfortune of not only following Roger Staubach as the QB of the Cowboys, he took over at the time when the 49ers, Redskins, Giants and Bears were emerging as the big dogs in the NFC.
@@davester1970 Very true, Dave. Besides "The Catch" (Montana-Clark), what also hurt the Cowboys was the GW "12-Men On The Field" FG by the Lions that same 1981 Regular Season. Every SINGLE official KNEW that the Lions had 12 Men On The Field @ that time & NO FUCKIN' PENALTY WAS EVER CALLED IN THAT GAME. Since it was also that game's final play, the Cowboys lost that game by a score of 27-24 bc of the SHITTY OFFICI8ING!!!!! Had the Cowboys defeated the Lions that season, they would've hosted the game the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (not the 40-Whiners despite the Cowboys losing 2 them earlier in that season [59-14] bc of the tiebreaker 4mat in determining playoff seeding was slightly different then; it would've favored the Cowboys if they & 40-Whiners had identical records but that's somewhat besides the point).
My all time favorite player. Loved watching him play when I was a kid.
Same here
me too . hi from mexico
In high school, Steve Pelleuer's teammates included former Falcons/Seahawks coach Jim Mora and Queensryche guitarist Michael Wilton.
Very cool! 👍
WHAT high school was this?
Interlake High Bellevue Washington
No kidding? That's pretty cool.
Queensryche wasn't my favourite, but they were good; underrated band.
Now that is the ultimate in random facts and very cool. I love the Cowboys and was a big Queensryche fan, never heard this before. Danny White was highly underrated and under appreciated by Cowboy fans imo. The last year's were so bad perhaps
My best memory of Danny White was our victory over the Falcons in the divisional round of the 1980 playoffs. The long pass to Drew Pearson was the nail in the coffin for the Falcons in a FURIOUS come from behind victory.
Those playoffs were played around the Xmas holidays. Which made it even more exciting.
@@stevenpringle1670 Exactly!
Danny White really was never appreciated by the Cowboys, players or fans after being Staubach's successor. He had to fight off Gary Hogeboom even after He took the Cowboys to three consecutive NFC Championship games.
Like, Tony Dorsett, he had his, best, years as the Cowboys regressed, but, RBs, are, forgiven, far, easier, than, QBs, that simple.
NFC championships are nice but Super Bowl wins are what owners want.
@@drmayeda1930 Danny White didn't even make it, there, but, to be fair, I, only, see him, winning, SB XVII, no, more.
@@matthewdaley746 I agree; the 1982 Cowboys probably have enough to beat the Dolphins (I believe the Cowboys secondary would make David Woodley's job just as rough as Washington Team did in that spot), but not likely the '80 Raiders or '81 Bengals.
@@gluserty A few freak plays provided, for, the entirety of their offense in that, SB, it, was, just a huge mirage.
This is a foreshadowing of Danny White's coaching career indoors in the Arena League, becoming a HOFer in that league.
And he eventually won the big one there... Before losing 3 straight Arena Bowls 02 & 04 to San Jose and 03 to my Tampa Bay Storm)
Great story about a really good player. Danny White was one of those players that if he could have just gotten 3 more wins, would have been to the Super Bowl 3x and probably in conversation for the HOF. I remember him always being very consistent and reliable for the Cowboys. Great human interest story about one of the better QBs of the early 80s and a true team player.
The, only, SB, that he, likely, wins, is, SB XVII, those Cowboys, were, basically, the same team, that, won, SB XII, the lack of a, great, QB, ruined them, in the, end.
I think and Tony Romo are in the same boat.
@@chaosgreyblood Tony Romo, probably, at least, makes, The, Ring Of Honor, because, of the media career, that he just, started, up.
It's tough to follow a legend. Also, Landry wasn't enamored with him. There was a moment where they looked into trading him and draft picks to the Colts, for the rights to Elway. Could you imagine...?
@@eugenedenbrook322 Given his talent, Tom Landry treating him, badly, "might," have gotten him fired, faster.
Danny White was so unappreciated. One of my favorite Cowboys of all time!!
ALLS HE DID WAS WIN!! R.I.P. Danny White
Same here
He was never the same after the wrist injury. The accuracy was gone in his passes.
What year did he injure his wrist?
@@astrostar49 1986 vs the Giants.
The throw to Perason in 82 NFC Champ Game was a bullet, so close
Yeah that vicious hit he took from Carl Banks at Giants in '86 actually ended his career. Though he would return but as you mentioned...."Never the Same! But from 1980-84. White was amazing!!
@@piijay14 was it Carl? I thought it was Harry Carson but my memory is pretty hazy. In any event you're right Danny was never able to throw the ball the same again after that injury. That one play was pretty much not only the end of his career but the end of Coach Landry's career as well. Sad part is that they were sitting at 6 and 2 on the season and leading the division when that happened.
That would be the last home win of Landry's career
Also a few overlaps people don't really think of Michael Irvin playing his rookie year for Landry and Too Tall Jones playing his last year for Jimmy Johnson
Or Nate Newton and others playing for Landry. I have long held, based on Jimmy Johnson’s inability to replicate his Dallas success in Miami that the great Dallas 1990’s Team was catching lightning in a bottle where influences from Landry, Johnson and Jones all played important roles. Landry had, after being unusually loyal to many players long past their time had brought a number of rebuilding blocks on to the team, while Johnson brought a fire that burned for success which the team needed, and Jones brought the ego that allowed him to make and capitalize on the Herschel Walker trade, even though he and Johnson did waster a #1 pick which n Steve Walsh from Miami (The only time I’ve heard the crowd and the Commissioner laugh at a pick in the NFL Draft Room)
Too Tall Jones was there so long he played with both Mr Cowboy himself Bob Lilly in the early 70s and Troy Aikman in 1989.
@@krl97a Wouldn’t you put the player with the most all time pass blocks in the HOF? I don’t get it. Too Tall was the best at that at the best should be recognized
@@thulsadoom9926 I agree he belongs, but by far the most egregious HoF snub of any team, not just the Cowboys, is Chuck Howley.
@@krl97a oh yeah. The only player from the losing team to be awarded the Super Bowl MVP. Good choice
Always liked Danny a lot! It’s tough coming after A Legend. Danny was a Class Act! Great QB! And Punter. VERY UNDER RATED! Thanks for The Memories.
Very true, B.M.C.; the best part of D.W. being the QB & P? When in punting 4mation, the opponents had 2 brace themselves 4 the "fake"; that extra dynamic made D.W. a true athlete.
White was one heck of a QB. But I was thinking about the other QB in this game, Chris Miller who would blossom in 1991 for the “2Legit 2quit Falcons”. Miller was the reason Brett Favre was traded to the Packers. Had Miller stayed healthy, the trade would have been justified
Well, Favre had a bit of a rep as a partier which didn’t help.
@@michbarkc Hell, Favre understood why the Falcons traded him, to his credit; when he came under Holmgren's wing, he got better...
Yep I believe he had some bad concussions that really messed with him. He was a very good QB.
Danny White earned my respect when fought a lineman to protect his lineman.
A good player, a decent man, and a great teammate. Difficult to comprehend, true.
Stories like this one are the kind of investigative, human interest, feel-good documentaries that are largely lost today in a world of recency bias and hot takes. Very nice 🏈
I think there was a similar situation between Danny White and Gary Hogeboom in 1984, but White was adamant he should remain the starting quarterback?
Edit: Whoops, it's Gary Hogeboom, not Mike. I'm not sure how that got there.
it was Gary Hogeboom, not Mike.
Thanks George. It was Gary. I believe he was traded to the Colts? and didn’t do much in his NFL Career.
There was an unusual dynamic between White and Hogeboom that was the fault of the Cowboy organization. During the NFL players strike and its associated 3 Replacement games, the Cowboys organization had structured many players such as White to contracts that severely penalized for missing any games.
When players like White, Tony Dorset, and others grudgingly crossed the players picket line and played in the Replacement games, many Cowboy players after the strike was over directly supported Hogeboom over White for the Starting quarterback just because of the ill will of the strike.
That led retired Cowboy Roger Staubach, a surprisingly quiet yet fiercely competitive individual that I am proud to call a personal friend, to publicly state that if he were in Danny White’s position, that he would personally and individually confront every Cowboy player at their locker who were making disparaging remarks about White to the press. Even with a trip to the NFC Championship game, it was a bad year for Cowboy fans to sit thru.
What a wonderful player for the Dallas Cowboys. The win vs Atlanta would be Landry's last ever home win.
Tom Landry is a Legend
Alas, he, proved, that, true, greatness, is, knowing, when, to, leave, and, he, truly, didn't, he, was, very, poorly, served, by, 1983-1988, no, question.
He may have petered out toward the end of his run, but football wouldn't be what it is today without his innovations.
@marcus813 Yeah, sort, of, like, how, if, Chuck, Noll, had, retired, in, 1981, not, 1991, he'd, be, an, even, greater, coach, than, he, already, is.
@Fries Really, makes, it, worse-nastier.
Beat the Falcons in 78 playoffs after Staubach got knocked out, beat the Falcons in 80 playoffs as a starter, and beating them here again. Trifecta of pain.
One of my favorite Cowboys of all time to go along with Tony Dorset and Randy white
Good old Danny...great punter, too!
Danny White is the epitome of one of those great players you just never hear about anymore. If he got the Cowboys over the hump just once into a Super Bowl, he'd be a HOFer.
Tony Romo would have been the same forgotten player. Broadcasting will keep him relevant for 30 years putting him in the Hall. Not as a player though.
Very underrated QB from Cowboys history. Waited his turn won a lot of games & took a lot of the blame when the 'Boys went to sh*t. Plus he was pretty good punter.
5:58 Actor David Keith just belting out the Star Spangled Banner on the Cowboys sideline
Longtime Cowboy fan just wanted to add Danny White you have more fans than you may think , Thank you for a lot of wins and being one of my Favorite Comboys
Danny White was a very good QB/punter and I wish people gave him more accolades
No. We hold SB winners in higher esteem. That’s the way it should be. Nothing against White but there has to be Separation between good and great.
Your channel is full of interesting short documentaries on topics I’d never see anywhere else. Thank you.
Never appreciated in Dallas, despite the 3 consecutive NFC championships. Don’t forget that he successfully subbed for Staubach in the ‘78 playoffs against Atlanta, allowing them to advance to SB XIII. Very good QB.
One thing JG9 surprisingly forgot to mention was that the Falcons came into this game off a shocking blowout win of the 49ers AT Candlestick
I've always been a cowboys fan. Danny White was my first ever favorite player.
White had some awesome comeback games in the early 80s. Too bad he couldn't come back and beat the Niners in the ''catch'' game.
Considering, how, terribly the 49ers, lost, the, TO, battle, it says, more, about the Cowboys that they, weren't, able to, win.
Horse collar tackle on Pearson
That was the oh sh*t he gonna breakaway play
2fingers it looked like yanked him around and to the ground
That close
@@matthewdaley746 bingo. The Cowboys should have won that game with all the turnovers the 9ers gave them. Dallas blew it.
@@aceassn716 Rules allowed it, merely.
@@diaz5292 Danny White couldn't, capitalize.
Awesome video. Thank you for this.
Thank you for the upload. Growing up Danny White was my favorite Dallas Cowboy player and I thought the treatment he received from the fans was unfair. I wasn’t aware of this tidbit in 1988, so thank you my good friend, it’s always nice to learn something new from the old days.
Fun fact (or not so fun), this was Tom Landry’s last home win as Cowboys coach.
Said, before, bears repeating, not, following Roger Staubach, into, retirement, torpedoed Tom Landry's legacy.
@@matthewdaley746 Is this a subtle reference to another coach, say, one who’s still coaching?
@@CTubeMan If you mean Bill Belichick, no, Tom Brady's, last, year, with, the Patriots proved no, QB, (or, coach), could rescue that team.
He made it to the end of a quarterback video without the obligatory "QB rating / spike the ball on every play" reference. Has that ever happened before?
Danny White was awesome. He wasn't horrible in 1987...the O-Line was horrible. Until then, he'd had great protection. Dude was tough. Never won the big game, but he sure kept the Cowboys competitive for almost his entire time there. Personally, if we're looking at stats of the game and Danny White, he should be in the HOF. Maybe not a first ballot, but there is no doubt he made an impact for the team and for the game. Same with Romo.
Danny White is my all time favorite Dallas Cowboy. To me, he just had I don't know how to describe it but a 'look' when he put on that helmet that made him look like a football player.
Sounds like a guy too young to remember #12.
Danny White was a class act and a really good QB. The teams took Dallas to 3 consecutive championship games, losing one by just a whisker. How many championship games has Dallas been to since 1996? Zero!
Big time
We were always contenders
Stop winning games, dummies. It'll cost you Troy Aikman.
Danny White has always been my fav QB, so I loved this video. He worked hard at being a precise timing passer, and had an amazing punting leg -- Landry should have kept him as the primary punter also and just paid him more.
The '88 season preview publications I have say White definitely was not happy about Pelluer replacing him as the starter.
Should he have been?
He didn't play well in '87 because the Cowboys were becoming a bad team. Pelluer didn't play well, either. In '88, they were a very bad team.
He was such a good QB, that there was not a drop off in confidence post-Rodger
Danny's performances from 1980-1983 were especially great. The Cowboys' offense was very explosive with White at the controls. I was an avid Cowboys fan from 1967-1993 (Jerry's antics ended it.) and out of all those years, 1980 is one of the five I will always treasure the most because there were so many questions and unknowns about how the team would respond the first year after Staubach's retirement. Those questions were answered in a resounding manner.
How does JJ cause you to become a former fan. Sounds like you were more of a fan of the HC than the franchise.
As good as White was. Staubach doesn’t lose after being gifted with 6 turnovers in the 1981 NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.
@stevenpringle1670 It's simple, Steve. Jerry Jones is egomaniacal and cares more about control and self glorification than he does the continued success of the team. I'll never be a fan of anyone who puts himself ahead of the team.
Did you read how long I had been a Cowboys fan? 27 Years. From 1986-1990 the Cowboys struggled. In 1988 & 1989 they finished last. If I had just been a fan of the coach I would've ceased being a Cowboys fan about 5 years sooner.
Jones has no business being in the Hall Of Fame.
@@stevenpringle1670Refresh my memory. Of the 6 turnovers the 49ers committed in the 1981 Championship game, how many did the Cowboys convert into scores?
In Super Bowl XII, the Broncos committed 8 turnovers but Dallas only scored 27 points. Considering how potent Dallas' offense was they should've scored more than they did and would've won by a wider margin.
During this timeframe, thus of us who became Cowboys fan when Dallas Texans left to become KC Chiefs and Cowboys were a new expansion team. We were spoiled and were not faced with a losing season or a season where we weren't in the playoffs. Danny White was very good but he was in the shadow of Staubach. Danny just like in College was the team QB and Punter. After retiring he went into coaching xfl and won Championships over 14 year career. He did have some demons in the 80's but eventually defeated them.
How do you only have 20K subs? Love your vids.
I have always felt that White was underrated and got too much blame as the team declined. I would put him over Romo.
What? Not only Staubach and Aikman, but over Romo?
@@roxydejaneiro5640 I am not quite sure about what you are saying. I do not feel that he was as good as Staubach or Aikman, but I would have taken him over Romo all day every day.
In case you were wondering, yes, the Irvin you see in 9:37 is Michael Irvin.
As a kid, Staubach was my hero. But I always admired Danny White, for stepping in after a legend and doing a very good job. I always loved his days as a punter, and all his fake punts and first-down runs/passes. I always give White his due. After all, how many players are able to perform at a pro-bowl caliber level at 2 positions. Danny White: class act!
How many players can play at that level when they're forced to immediately follow an all time great? If White would have led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl, he's a HOFer.
I always remember him as a punter.
A punter. Punting was just a way Dallas was able to save a roster spot.
7:32 Definite overthrow. And yes, he was *that* Ken Whisenhunt. Miller might as well have just spiked the ball into the ground on that play.
Danny White did that for Pueller in one game.. Romo was in Rayne's year ALL year long in 16
Danny White was pure class & doesn’t get the credit that he deserves for being an excellent QB.
Very nice guy...Met him after he retired...Good man...
Lifelong Eagles fan, memories of there games begin in the late 1970's. So yeah I don't like they Cowboys at all. I do however have a ton of respect for Danny White. Really brought into a no win situation. Any time they lost he probably got a "Staubach would have won that." As you said his numbers were really good as his great teammates aged out of the league. Very underated guy. Great video as always.
Danny White didn’t lose very many. Staubach wins the close one’s always had something to pull out a victory.
5:57 That's actor David Keith holding the cap. He was Richard Gere's buddy in "An Officer and a Gentleman"
He was also friends with Bill Bates when both attended Tennessee. You would see David a lot on the sidelines during UT games as well.
Danny White was the last real player of an era where kicking specialists didn't exist and teams all used some dual purpose player to punt or kick. White was drafted primarily as a punter, IN THE 3RD ROUND, they wanted him so much as a punter, and so little as a QB he ended up in the World League. If it weren't for that league folding he likely never plays for the Cowboys.
There is a college qb that was asked to serve as his teams punter a couple years ago, would be awesome if this was a trend we revisited.
If it, weren't, for, that, new, league, existing-ish, and, Joe Robbie being, dirt-cheap, the Dolphins have a, much, longer, reign.
I never knew this great side story. Wow.
So nobody is going to mention that the actor David Keith (aka Jack Parkman from Major Leagues II) on the Cowboys sideline at 5:58??
Danny White was a pretty good QB. The best of Cowboys QBs with out SB win.
To get a example of just how good that is, that's like if you did was throw the ball on every down
I miss them Red falcon uniforms with the red helmets . they are going to wear them for one game this year so I guess that's something
I remember Danny White. I forgot Steve Pelluer.
1988 was a bad year for Dallas. During the Dallas vs. Chicago game, Pelluer was trying to slide after a run and Mike Singletary smeared him across the field.
Danny White was our great quarterback at ASU in 1972 and 1973. He lead us to 2 bowl victories vs Missouri in 1972 and Pittsburgh and Tony Dorsett in 1973. He was a great one for sure!!
Yeah I’m sure Dorsett was a freshman.
Official Jaguar Gator 9 has also made a video about a time a benched quarterback lost the game despite being on the bench. This video feature Dave Krieg in the 1991 season.
Hearing Vinny Testaverde's interception total in 1988 cut deep! LOL
Was White the only long-time starting QB Landry ever benched? As I recall, Meredith and Staubach both voluntarily retired.
Not really a long time starter but he did bench Craig Morten in favor of Roger Staubach
1971 was a classic QB controversy. Dallas reached Super Bowl V in 1970 due to defense. Morton was not great & blew SB V with 2 4th Q INTs. Landry kept changing starters in 1971 (1st 6 gams Morton started 4 & Roger 2 games) & even alternated them on every play in loss to Bears to fall to 4-3. He then settled on Roger & Dal won 10 straight and SB VI. What Landry did do was despite winning both games by 7 points at halftime, he benched Staubach week 4 1971 vs NYG & week 4 1973 at Washington (both on MNF). I recall 1973 was something about Roger not reading his keys. Morton won NYG game, but was awful in that Wash game, including a pick 6 to lose it. Landry went back to Roger for good 1973 week 5. Landry benched Morton in 3rd Q of 1972 Div playoff at SF, but was because Morton played badly & losing 28-13. Staubach rallied Dallas with 2 TDs in last 2 min to win 30-28
I do not care for the Cowboys in the slightest, but White was a badass. I hope they consider putting him in the Dallas HOF.
Unfortunately, he, has, two, serious, strikes, against, him, never, winning, a, SB, and, never, joining, the, media, like, Tony, Romo.
@@matthewdaley746 White was better in the playoffs than Romo too! How many times did Romo ever reach the NFC title game, huh? (Whispers.) How many times?
@@DolFan316 Correct, but, the media angle, likely, is going to make people forget about his many deficiencies.
@@DolFan316 The Dallas Cowboys are in the NFC, so....
That said, true, Romo never made it to the conference championship.
@@thrash8315 It, wouldn't, have, mattered, the, only, QBs, to, beat, Tom, Brady, in, the, SB, had, crushing, defenses, and/or, played, The, Game, Of, Their, Lives.

Another, trashy hit, like, he got from Bernard Karmell Pollard, back, in, 2008, will, end, his career, and, that's assuming his career, doesn't, end, through no fault of his own, that's all.
Just another reason it bothers me that White doesn't get the respect he deserves. Everybody talks about Romo who was indeed a fine QB in his own right with the very best stats over all Dallas QBs but White should at least be in the conversation of Cowboy greats! He at least deserves that for he played in an incredibly tough era competing with the likes of Joe Theisman, Joe Montana and helping the Cowboys reach the NFC title game 3 consecutive seasons (1980-82) a level they have yet to reach in this millennium. White belongs in the ring of honor. Come on Jerry!!
Danny white should have been Troy QB coach and offensive coordinator later for the Cowboys
1. Roger Staubach
2. Don Meredith
3. Danny White
4. Troy Aikman
5. Eddie Lebaron
Back when the Cowboys were a great team. When their coach told them "If you make a touchdown, act like you've been there before!!!"
I wonder if that had anything to do with Landry being 2-3 in SBs. 5-6 in NFL/NFC championship games.
Danny has always been a real good guy
I really like these stories .
Do a video on the Herschal Walker trade
Danny belongs in the ROH!
Danny White is the 2nd best QB in Cowboys history.
White had nerve damage from that wrist injury. Ball security was an issue to say the least i remember him losing the ball dhring a pass attempt and not realizing until after the fact that the ball had left his hand at the beginning of his throwing motion. Not a Cowboys fan but always respected his selfless after that injury.
When I was little, I became a Cowboys fan because Danny white was the quarterback AND the Punter. . . . . then in 1996, I switched to the Jets. They went 1-15 and the Cowboys won the super bowl . . . . . Ugh
Nothing screams "Old School Cowboys" like seeing all those water stains on the Astroturf at Texas Stadium!
At 7:20, Chris Berman would have called Falcons WR Stacey Bailey Beetle Bailey...he could go all the way...! The '88 Cowboys put a scare into my Browns that year!
Salute to Danny White.
Danny White was true champion in this own right..
Danny White and Steve Young had similar careers following legendary QBs. The big difference of course is that Steve won a SB and is in the HOF.
Danny White became a very successful athletic director for college teams.
Danny White always hot crapped on by the fans because he took over for Staubach.
Taking, over, for, a legend, isn't the problem, taking, over, for, said legend, and, not, winning, is the problem, only, Steve Young, and, Aaron Rodgers, did it, all, others, failed.
9:23 Apparently the QB threw that pass from the surface of the sun! lol
Danny white was underrated QB coming from a a eagle fan
Drew Bledsoe was selfless as well when he was on the sideline when Tom Brady took over
Roger Staubach knew when to walk away. Age 36 and lot's of head shots.
Very good Q.Back & doesn't get the respect that other cowboy Q,Backs have gotten but , he wasn't a mobile Q, Back & couldn't throw on the run & when his line got weaker in 85-87 he was exposed & wasn't very efficient ,, love Danny White regardless because he is a humble person & a good kicker as well ...
Update:
Father Time is no longer undefeated. Tom Brady retired after a year where he could very well be MVP, handing Father Time his first career loss
What happened in 1988? Was it a Southern-style Sunday afternoon? Was it because the Atlanta Falcons (which they were members of the NFC West Division) faced the Dallas Cowboys in 1988?
So is 73.2 higher or lower than if the QB spiked the ball on every play? Just checking
Honestly I never thought about Danny White sorry about that and that means you got heart❤✝️ my bad brother✝️✝️
There is a lot of context you left out of this video about Danny's decline. Danny was still playing extremely well up through the 1986 season despite the quality of the team around him slowing degrading over the seasons. In that year the team was 6 and 2 going into the 9th game of the season against the New York Giants. In that game Carl Banks broke Danny's wrist on a sack and Danny was never able to throw the ball again like he had before the injury.
1987 was the year of the player strike and the scab games and everything was wonky and difficult to quantify. The season was shortened by one game, Washington, Philly and New York used almost all replacement players while Dallas had several of their regular players for all three games. And aside from Washington NONE of the teams in the division were very good that year. Everybody except Washington finished under 500 on the season. Because of that and because Dallas went 2 and 1 in their strike games and had two wins over the NY Giants they were still in the hunt for a wildcard playoff birth on Thanksgiving Day when they faced Minnesota. Steve Pelluer had started the previous game against Miami but Danny was back under center for the Minnesota game. And I imagine it was because Coach Landry felt that Danny still gave them the best chance to win in a game that would put them on the inside track for a wild card spot in the Playoffs and assure them of a winning record for the season. The game was very competitive and it ended up going to OT. I'd been able to watch the first half at my grandmother's house but we had to drive home during the second half and I came in and turned the tv on as the game was in OT and literally the first or second play I saw was Danny being forced out of the pocket and trying to throw a pass on a scramble and you could tell he just couldn't do it. The ball wobbled and fluttered into the hands of a Minnesota DB and that was all she wrote. Dallas lost the game, lost their chances at the playoffs and was assured of their second losing season in a row. It was at that point that Tom Landry made the decision to go with Steve because he realized that Danny was never going to be able to throw the ball again like he could before the wrist injury.
Danny was really a hard luck QB and just could not catch a break when it mattered most. In 1980 his first season a bad no call on a pass interference penalty against Philly gave the Eagles the inside track in the playoffs and for the division at a time when they couldn't buy a win in Texas Stadium and the Cowboys ended up losing their NFC Championship matchup with them in Veteran Stadium. In 81 a horse collar tackle against Drew Pearson that would be illegal today prevented Dallas from scoring a sure touchdown after "the catch" and then poor Danny fumbled on what would now be called a "tuck rule" incomplete pass on the very next play when they only needed another 10 or 15 yards for an attempt at a winning field goal. And in 82 against Washington he suffered a concussion in the first half of the game and had to watch Gary Hogeboom play the entire second half. And the worst result of that wasn't that Dallas lost it was that Gary looked just good enough to create a stupid QB controversy over the next two season which culminated in Coach Landry taking half of 1984 to decide that Gary didn't have what it took to be the starting QB. All of which probably cost Dallas their first season without going to the playoffs in about 10 years. Then of course in 86 came the broken wrist and that was really all she wrote not only for Danny White but pretty much for Coach Landry as well. Steve was a perfectly nice guy but he pretty well showed in his one season as a starter in 88 that he did NOT have what it took to be a starting QB in the NFL. In 89 Dallas would have the number one pick over all and everybody and their brother knew the Cowboys would take Troy Aikman even before the sale to Jerry went through. Of course the sale did go through and Aikman was selected but by then both Danny and Coach Landry were gone from the team.
For all the talk of how great Romo was he wasn't half as good at winning when it counted most. Danny had several excellent games in the playoffs in 80, 81 and 82 the Atlanta divisional round being a highlight come from behind victory. It's never sat well with me the way people that follow the team have always crapped all over him for not being able to get the team to the Super Bowl or be the next Roger Staubach.
As a lifelong Cowboys fan (since 1974), I remember all this like it was yesterday!
I remember around this time and before Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson came to town, and how much of a fan of Tom Landry's (R.I.P.) I was, but it was time to move on from Landry.
And decisions like the Steve Pelleur "MOVE" was one of them!
Danny White had the "MISFORTUNE" of replacing Roger Staubach - and being the "RECIPIENT" of an aging team with coaches the game had past by and a bunch of bad draft picks, but nobody talks about that - except it seems is me and two of my brothers who also grew up being Cowboys fans. I'm not saying White didn't have his faults - he did - but he was never as bad as people made him out to be.
Just look at the ALL STAR QB lineup "AFTER" Troy Aikman and "BEFORE" Tony Romo to get a real good look at some bad QB play!
TO PUT DANNY WHITE IN PERSPECTIVE:
After Jimmy Johnson left, "REAL COWBOYS FANS" would kill to be able to lose 3 straight NFC CHAMPIONSHIPS - AGAIN!
Tony Dorsett flourished as the Cowboys collapsed around him, but, RBs, get a pass.
No I don’t believe we’d kill to lose three championship games in a row. I cried a lot tears and was made fun of by my friends that were Steelers and Redskin fans.
@@stevenpringle1670 Seriously, talented, obscenely, unlucky.
I truly believe that if White was on the 49ers, he would've won 3 or 4 Super Bowls. At one time, he was the top rated QB in NFL History,,,, then Some guy named Montana had enough passes to Qualify. Then Marino, then Esiason and others while White's stats tailed off a little towards the end after his wrist injury
Was that the actor David Keith on the sideline?
Yes
