Photographers, don't be afraid to direct your model/subject. Don't regret not saying something while your shooting. When you get home and look at the photos, you'll regret that you didn't tell them to tip the top of their head or turn their shoulders and give less or more shoulders to the camera. Feeling comfortable doesn't equate to looking good in the final image. Meaning, it might feel comfortable for a model to slump in a headshot and have their arms resting on a table but most of the time this comfortable way of sitting will shorten a model's neck and nobody wants to look like they have no neck. My favorite is to pose people without it looking posed. Let them do some shots where they feel comfortable but then direct them into a pose you know will be the winning shot. Basically, make sure they are not too slumped and comfortable in a headshot unless they like to look like their head just sits on their shoulders and they have no neck lol.
I just want to say I've been looking for some guidance on this subject for a long time and this is the one video to really help me understand it. Thank you and keep up the amazing work! I love the photos!
Some technical details, which are not mentioned in the video: in the first half, while using back light, the photos are yellow although it is not sunset; this is because of the white balance. On the second part where Jessica is using direct front light, the images are dark, that is because she had to use high shutter speed, Otherwise the models face would be over exposed.
I tried doing this like you shot the model at 4:40 mark..but, my subject was a silhouette. I was shooting at golden hour and using the sun as backlight. What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks, Jessica, for your lovely video. I notice that your own hair back (11.13) has an image of a face (we all have one or more on our head backs) that has a lot of hair being thrown right across the right eye of it. Might that be a subconscious reason why you hate/dislike hair going across the face?
18:17 That one might be my favorite! I've been looking into golden hour portrait photos in nature such as fields and this video helps! I love the softness and mood of this sorta light and nature though the trade-off is can't always see eye color clearly. Actually what time of day were these taken? I can't tell.
Ride Wireless Go x 2. Suggest you get the lav’s with it. Also get a Saramonic 100x and put it on your video camera. You can then attach both receivers to the Saramonic 100x, then feed direct to the camera. It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds. This will improve quality of sound, you can adjust gains for you and your subject separately and it improves your workflow by not having to sync later. This set up will change your life. You can also feed it through an external recorder if you want. Good luck with it. PS love your energetic style you bring to your video.
I love how you were holding on to that big lens. Looks like you didnt want to let go ;) Can you give us more practical tips on hand holding big lens. I almost felt like I would of needed a tripod to taken on such a lens? Do you use a 80-200? How would you handle that kind of lens?
This was amazing! I am truly impressed with your skills. I am planning to take some high school graduation photos of my daughter and this video was super helpful. Hopefully she will be half as complaint as your friend. : )
I think it's best to eventually use on Manual, but I started with aperture as well! That way you can choose your depth of field, especially if you're shooting portraits, and let the other settings automatically adjust for you. However, make sure you learn about ISO, White Balance, and Shutter Speeds eventually and don't rely on your camera to set those for you, especially if you want to really enhance the look of your photos in the future! 💛
Wonderful content, really great advice. You are SO enthusiastic that it's great! The only problem I had was catching everything you were saying (you talk really fast), but that's not a criticism! It shows your love of your craft :-)
Very helpful tips, thank you! Also when I started watching this video I thought, "Wow, this looks like Deming" Then you said it is Western Washington! Too funny, maybe it is Deming. :)
u said ur loving the mark 3 ?? is it not ur standard camera? and f-stop 1.2 omg im jellous...just would love to try that, my biggest appeture is 1.4...
Those later larger aperture shots were lovely. At times I found the almost manic narrative hard to follow. Gives no time to let a good point sink in. Still, I subscribed, so will watch again.
@@JessicaWhitaker I shot in manual mode forever then this guy recommended AP mode.. I've yet to shoot in it. I just thought maybe u used AP mode. Thank you for your response! Love your videos!
Jessica, can you do a video on posing men please? I'm a beginner photographer and want to use my boyfriend to get some practice in lol but these poses are quite feminine so would be nice to see how to pose males also ❤❤❤

This video was super helpful and I can't wait to try Skillshare! These tips are super helpful for my growing Photography channel. I would absolutely love if some of you went and checked it out, as I'm launching my self-portrait photography series next week! 💛💛💛
I know I'm a little late to the party (and I love the tips in your video btw) but if you're still looking for a wireless lav mic system, I highly recommend this one. All of these videos are super frustrating because you choose someone for these videos that are super comfortable in front of the camera and know what they're doing. I have awkward teen girls that don't already know how to pose themselves or play in front of the camera. You literally didnt have to tell this woman anything. It's not very helpful to those of us who aren't shooting models.
so i have several tutorials on here photographing people who aren't models! i also have an entire online photography workshop that focuses on exactly that...making clients feel comfortable in front of the camera and posing: www.jessicawhitaker.co/workshop

yep!
The picture at 17:56 is brilliant! It would be great to see a 35mm vs 50mm vs 85mm comparison video too (if you've got time!).
thank you! ah i would love to that kind of video, i need a 85m lens first hehe!
I don't know if I'm more in love with the video or with Jessica's jean! 💛
At 13:50 when she is backlit, how did you get her face bright with no shadows. I don’t see you using any type of reflector. The lighting is amazing.
Im learning so much !! What presets do you use here? Love it
Thank you for the video. This helps a lot for my photography hobby
I would love to see how you edited these images!!
i edited the more muted ones using my 'stateside' preset pack! www.jessicawhitaker.co/presets/

What is your shutter speed set at in these? She’s moving a lot and they are turning out awesome w no blur!
Can we start a GoFund me for a wireless mic for Jessica?? 💛
But then we'd miss out on these hilarious interludes with the "lasso" haha

In few composition & framing classes too. Im confused!
And a tripod or gimbal for the videographer
I mean if she can afford a 1.2 of all these lenses do we really need to crowdsource for her?
@10:17 all I could say was YESSS QUEEN!!!!!!
thanks a lot for the tips!

Amazing info...and your model understands how to pose. You work great together ✌
Turn on the electric level feature in the Mark III, Mark IV custom features.

Yes I agree a great shot.
What are your thoughts on using a reflector during photoshoots to bounce light back into the model's face?

Did you ever get a link for the wireless mic lol
For a beginner photographer what setting/priority do you recommend learning on? I’ve been told aperature.. what do you think
manual!

As a beginner, read, read, and read more ... then practice, practice, and practice more.
Do you ever use a fill flash so your background is not blown out with backlight? And avoid raccoon eyes when sun is high noon?
I loved your video !! Do you think you coupd do one about posing with animals like horses , dogs..ect?
There's a mic called the "Rode RodeLink Wireless Filmmaker Kit" which can help with the wire problem. It's wireless~
LiterallyVictoria oh someone suggested that to me on Instagram, I’ll take a look!
