Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) sets a new Olympic record to claim the gold medal in the women's 50m freestyle in the Aquatics Centre at the London 2012 Olympic Games (4 August).
Aliaksandra Herasimenia (BLR) won silver in the event with Marleen Veldhuis (NED) winning bronze.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Her speed of strokes is really good cuz her breakout was terrible relatively. 4:08 - 4:15 you can see that she's really behind in the beginning of the race but she caught up to 2nd

i am a swimmer traning for a meet but it is so hard sometimes to keep going when it gets hard but I keep going no mater how are it gets for me I have the dream to go to the olympics but prob wont happen

I have had some great atletes who started at older age and made is to the olympics. It depends on the talent you have and more importend the coach and all other things what is needed to become that good.
