    As a 3rd generation carpenter I can tell you there is a slight grip change from a downward hammering motion to a horizontal hammering motion. The horizontal hammering grip resembles a strong golf grip. Using a downward hammering motion grip to hammer horizontally turns the right palm up. The grip shift for horizontal hammering sets the palm somewhat perpendicular to the direction of the hammering motion with the thumb/ index finger v pointed to the right shoulder.

    I arrived at this same conclusion independently about a month ago. It is absolutely correct. A square club face at address does not equal a square club face at full swing. I now address the ball at 45% and then rotate my arms backward to the position of 'swing impact' while at address to ensure this is square with the target. If it is square I am good to go because logic dictates this will be the angle at which the club face will impact the ball when I swing hard at the ball. This neutral grip position should have been debunked years ago. It is why we slice as soon as we start putting any power into our swing. So we end up swinging slow and trying to artificially time the closing of the club face.

      So you ground the club 45 degrees closed and take a grip with your lead hand facing the target? So back of your lead hand square to target but club face 45 degrees closed at address? Did I get that right?

    So, so easy to relate to everything you show and say. The beauty of it all is the simplicity, after all 90% of golfers will never play to elite level, or have the perfect swing, or hit the ball flush every time, far from it.
    You’ve never lost sight of that, it’s why I watch and learn.

    Just make sure to swing the club head to the right. The feeling should be like your trying to fling the head of the club 45 degrees to the right. I turned 250 yard pull hooks/draws or 200 yard duck hooks into 285 to 300 yard drives. The grip alone gave me extra distance. By throwing the club head to the right it maximizes club head speed. It took me 11 years to understand how to swing a golf club for power.
    The only swing thought I have now is balanced finish. It ensures I have a smooth tempo that relaxes my arms and body, which leads to maximum power.

    Shawn i watched this clip a week or so ago. Listening to your explanation was as if you had been watching me swing a club. All the faults with the "neutral" grip you explained was exactly what i had. So i tried Savvy"s grip on the first tee with a long iron. Three balls in the water from duck hooks to the left (I'm a right hander) because i was so tuned into a conscious rotation of the hands to square the face. Anyway once i realized i just had to swing, and not think, funny things happened. Ball went far further, like 20 plus yards further. The flight was straight at the green with a draw that took it left of the green. A correction through the round had me aiming right to hit center. Not a perfect result every time, but I'm talking a round, not the range. By the end of the round i was hitting it further and crisper every shot with a visual and somewhat controlled draw as opposed to a weak fade cut shot if i mucked it up. Biggest single improvement to my game i have seen in the shortest time frame. Thanks to you both.

    I see a lot of videos where they tell you right palm down coming into impact even with a strong grip, this is right palm up. You also have a lot of shaft lean at address and at impact. For those who don’t have as much shaft lean should they close it less?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  2 роки тому +2

      Anytime you have any instruction that pertains to placing body parts to square the club at impact; RUN! You want to deliver an action THROUGH THE BALL and into the direction you want to start the ball with ease and velocity and full abandon where the swing’s release will naturally be anchored by the task of staying in that direction. If the grip is mot strong enough to begin with, then you won’t be able to deliver to the target and will need to release AT THE BALL to save the furniture. NOT the way to play golf fearlessly!

When you are hitting baseball and tennis the ball is in front off you and in the air. Not in the ground and midle off your stance. Yes, I considered all those options and this is why the true test is when you release past the ball into the direction you want the ball to start, is the ball flying the way you want it to fly and curving the way it should? You always want to make your adjustments on grip based on that. 👍😀

    If you play cricket baseball most sports using a racket or bat it’s a strong grip. Many instructors teach a strong grip
    Now. I changed & im hitting the ball a lot further more consistently. I can fade draw the ball ive got more control as I have the strength in my grip. However you do need to get your hands ahead of the ball with the swing otherwise you will pull it. But a strong grip is better than neutral. Fred couples, Bubba Watson, DJ, Koepka all the top tour players past & present have a very strong grip. Great video. 👍

    I play tennis my whole lift. This makes total sense, and I have seen the nail analogy used many times. I have always been underpowered and have always used a neutral grip. It feels so much more comfortable. For a time there I did try to strengthen to see 2 knuckles as they say to do. I will admit it never felt that comfortable. But when I see this explanation I know now I must incorporate this. I am also 10 finger with an eye to always have trail hand (right) club in fingers. Again tried Vardon and interlock be never felt a great connection to the club. Grip is CRUCIAL ugh. I want power and better contact. The best driver I could ever pull off was a power fade. They all fade or slide or it's a hard left. This is the way forward clearly..

    Great video! I love the strong grip analogies and also like the shoulder tilt at setup. I've always struggled to get through the ball with the neutral grip and level shoulders at setup. I am very good at hitting at the ball but I stall when it comes to following through. I'm right-handed and leave a lot of shots left of the target, some days I think my hands and timing are good but I hate to rely on my hands and arms to make the corrections, this action leads to inconsistency. I am looking forward to getting out on the range and giving this a go. Thanks for posting...

    Hi Shawn, I have a tennis background and I agree with your strong grip explanation. However Clay Ballard and lots of other teachers promote the neutral grip. Also some pro’s use the neutral and some even the weak grip. So there seems to be more than one truth. In tennis I change my grip according to the circumstances (service, slice, topspin etc...) . When I want to hit a fade in golf, I take a neutral grip and it works fine. However I never hear teaching pro’s about variation in grip in Golf. What is your opinion on that?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 роки тому +2

      See Clay explain backhand grip in tennis! He completely messes things up in that regard! 😝😝. I used a screen shot of his tennis grip to demonstrate how it correlates exactly with the stronger grip in golf. Strong grip is not for all golfers but it is BEST for MOST GOLFERS.

    Shawn does the club face not de loft with a strong grip thus going further ?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 роки тому

      Hey James! PGA tour AVERAGE Launch angle with a 7 iron is 16.3 degrees. The static loft of the 7 iron is between 27 and 34 degrees depending on the model and manufacturer. Irons are designed to be de-lofted. That is just part of the story. As you deliver THROUGH THE BALL, a good swing creates a kinetic chain that created a lag where the hands come through first and this OPENS THE CLUB FACE. See “through the ball vs at the ball shawn clement wisdom” and “when your grip is too weak or too strong shawn clement wisdom” for starters.

    I am 100 % convinced that a strong grip such as Savys is logically and anatomically superior to let's say a standard V's to the right ear grip. My only problem with a grip that strong is the left rough. I find it very difficult to start the ball far enough right to avoid over drawing. I understand that ball fight is a result of club face angle relative to swing path . The things that can have an impact on ball flight are the amount of body rotation, ball position and swing path. So I guess my question is if Savy started shall we say over drawing what would you consider recommending to fix that ? I have tried that strong grip several times but could never achieve accuracy.
