    IMPORTANT UPDATES / COMMENTS:
    1) At approx the 1:12 mark I mention photographer Dominique Tarle. Dominique arrived Nellcote around the 19th of April, and stayed on and off until mid August at Nellcote, then moving into a hotel last bit of August, he left for Paris one of the first days of September. Thank you Geir Chronicles of Nellcote!
    2) It is mentioned that the railway system was tapped into for extra power. I want to add and confirm, that this event is NOT certain that this was done. Just mentioned in discussions.
    3) There is a song called Goodnight played, mentioning Gram/Keith. This is NOT 100% certain, most likely it is not, and very highly possible it is Jimmy Miller. But not done at Nellcote

I am thinking how much those stolen Stones guitars would be worth in today's standards? Ouch! That 59 LP with the bigsby is priceless. Outstanding part one Steve. Just brilliant. I was not aware of 90% of the info that you talked about. This is my all time favorite Stones album. So I am loving this. Onto part two. Hope that you are both doing better than ever old {but young} friend~

Hey my old but young friend! I did a lot of pondering on each of these scenarios. Feeling it, thinking about what it felt like, the conversations. Very real and raw. I just wonder what the dialogue was. I believe Mick T had guitars stolen when they did the 70 tour. We can not imagine finding one of these now. thanks for the support. Been working and doing these, so doing well. My son just had a baby boy, so we are busy! cheers

My 19th birthday was a week before I saw the Stones live for the first time in June 1972. Life was grand and Exile On Main St was/is my favorite album by Watts & co. And, the Stones were playing two shows in one day at the Tarrant County Convention Center. In 2024 it's amusing to recall my ticket for the afternoon show cost $6, a floor seat about 20 rows back. The evening show cost me $5 to sit in the front row of what was called a loge in the lower balcony. Both Stones' performances that day were top notch, the later show slightly better IMO. Stevie Wonder was afforded every luxury, he played two opening sets that were slightly over an hour apiece, far longer than any warm-up act I'd ever seen. I was impressed with the massive talent radiating off the guy, during his set he got out from behind his keyboards and played sax, guitar, drums and other instruments every bit as good as he played keys. That didn't matter though because the cult of personality that was and is The Rolling Stones blotted everything out in their orbit when they took the stage.

what a 19th bday experience! amazing to have caught it. thank you for sharing all your experiences. I am looking forward to bring this to life in PART 2 again and try to get the flavor back and alive.

@@Hiraeth796 Thank you. By the time I saw the Stones I'd been a dedicated concertgoer for three years, accustomed to legends like the Doors, Hendrix & Zep et al and was already a cynical music consumer. So I'll never forget when the lights went up for the afternoon show I looked from Wyman to Charlie to Jagger thinking to myself 'they look just like their pictures.' Maybe Morrison, Jimi and Page weren't exactly the superstars I'd thought they were! The next time I saw the Stones was 1978, also in Ft. Worth, the last of seven small hall shows they played during a summer tour of football stadiums; where 80 and 90 thousand member audiences pelted the Stones with shoes and drink cups full of ice when they played six or seven unfamiliar Some Girls tunes in a row. Miss You and Girl With Faraway Eyes weren't classics yet but those new songs translated better in the 2800 seat theater I lucked out seeing them in. It didn't hurt I had the album already and knew the tunes well enough to know when Jagger fumbled a lyric. Peter Tosh had opened for the Stones and, unlike Stevie Wonder, they'd blown Keef & his lads off the stage. The second act was Doug Kershaw whose band endured three and half songs worth of nonstop booing before prudently deciding to exfiltrate from any vicinity near the stage. Poor Kershaw couldn't win, later he sat in with the Stones to play fiddle on Faraway Eyes and the crowd must've rattled him so badly he forgot where to come in and Mick said over the PA: "Doug, this is the part where you play." There's a dvd release of that particular show called Some Girls In Texas. It's on youtube too AND been cleaned up bigtime because they didn't sound as good onstage as they do on the dvd. Kershaw being admonished by Jagger is on that footage but there's no mention of Peter Tosh. In the song Star Star Jagger sings nasty lyrics not on the album that mention Steve McQueen & Jimmy Page by name. I thought it was a great show, just not as great as the Exile on Main St sets I saw in '72.

The bit about Marshall Chess is something i never knew, and you put it beautifully, really. There are moments, whether you're onstage or in the crowd, that are exactly as you described. I can only imagine what that moment must have been like with the Stones in their undisputed prime. Ebulliance, overflow, exactly. Thanks, Steve, another great doc. Another writer who covered the 1972 tour was Truman Capote, who joined it in late June. He was covering it for Rolling Stone, and had with him a photographer, Peter Beard. He and Terry Southern were the only journalists to travel on the Stones plane. He got along with the Stones, but after the tour, when he sat down to write the story, he wrote a few pages but just couldn't finish it. It was supposed to be called "It Will Soon Be Here," but as Gerald Clarke writes in his biography of Capote, "it never reached its destination." All this is from Clarke's book.

    Hey Steve
What a lovely way to spend time in Valentine’s wk. Thank you so much!
You are incredibly diligent, generous and humble regarding your work. It is unbelievably detailed and well researched. Even if we already know some of the info you present, you always uncover new gems, and gift us with new photos, videos and music. You dive into the weeds. And now you are treating some of us to even more, with future parts to this special project. Part 2 sounds very loaded and exciting!
Even though you don’t consider yourself a Rolling Stones aficionado, who are you kidding? No one knows the full story of the band, including the members but you certainly are among the few mortals who know the most. You are constantly using materials and sources that many of us have never even heard about before.
This era certainly highlights when the Stones were at the peak of their powers. They gave us the quintessential music and tour during this time.
This was when they changed the touring industry and have continued to be at the forefront, and cutting edge for all within it to this day. The Stones are constantly breaking new ground with innovative technology, creating new expectations and standards for musical acts. They know who to hire to make this happen.
It never dawned on me that some of the photos done by Robert Frank for the EOMS album were of Marshall Chess or Chris O’Dell. Until you commented on and showed us Stanley Booth in the Gimme Shelter documentary, I’d always thought that person was Spanish Tony Sanchez.
I cannot believe that a 6.5 acre estate existed in LA but that was 50 yrs ago, so it was less developed. I can’t imagine how much it would be worth now, and how valuable severing off portions for development would be.
The Murderers’ Row of photographers on the 72 tour (Leibovitz, Marshall, Russell) gave history some of the most iconic rock photos ever taken.
You make very logical points dismissing the rumoured Nazi connections to Nellcôte. What do they say about lies (or mistruths, myths)? A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots on.

    • @FlipSideCT
      @FlipSideCT  8 місяців тому

Hi MS K......the amount of folks out there who just believe they are the REAL SOURCE is bigger then you think. There are many critics, haters, troubled, know it alls out there. I just want to make sure I CYA myself, as you are right, who can know it all.
I really felt everything was out there for EXILE/Nellcote, and why I did not want to do a doc on it. But as I dove more into STP, it brought me down so many holes that with many new resources and findings, I felt we needed to expose more truth and clean up what is out there. ie TNJ / Micawber / Eric or Nazi symbols. LOL, they were just symbols in vents. Why would Nazi's do that in a basement. Just a pure faslehood word of mouth fake story.
Glad you are on it. I am extremely surprised there are not many folks commenting on the above and what you mentioned. I talked with Geir Hornes more on the topic first hand. He had some one go to Freiberg Germany where all the Nazi archives are kept to do the research. Anyway....Part 2 is 60% written, but got more to do. all my best!!

I truly believe it was Mick Taylors influence that gave The Stones a completely new outlook and energy. The best Stones albums were made during his time with them. In my humble musicians opinion, some of the best guitar ever recorded is on Exile and G H Soup. Taylor gave them a blues side that they didn't have before, even though it was the blues, with Brian Jones, that launched their careers. Jones was a musical genius and a true artist, but Taylor was such a great guitarist he was snapped up by John Mayall and became a Bluesbreaker at just 18, following in the footsteps of icons such as Peter Green and Eric Clapton. Taylor, like the other Mick - Mick Ronson - are unsung heroes of the rock world. As with both and those they played with - none of the music would have been what it was without them.

I would some up the guitar playing in the Stones like this. Mick Taylor; What can you say? He was almost too good. And I'm saying this in the best way possible. Bill has mentioned Mick was a better musician than the rest of them all put together. Ronnie and Brian were both very good at adding single notes or in Brian's case Strange sounds that had me cranking up the volume on the fadeout songs just to here every last note. When my Grandmother bought me Get Yer Ya- Yas Out (witch is an old blues song). Looking on the back cover I remember saying "who the heck is this guy"? This was 1976ish. Having said that, getting my copy of Tattoo You, and dropping the needle on Start Me Up. My heart broke with the first three notes. I said "Not Exile again." I think I became a man that day. Life is like that sometimes, just my opinion.🙃🥃🎸

well guitar players I find gravitate to the melodic and beauty of Mick and his technique and flow. He just knew that fretboard and scales beyond anyone. A total different style than anyone else, even that over rated Clapton (IMO). So yes, the later sound will not compare. But Ronnie has such a different style and melody, which I wished more would take in. thanks for sharing David!

Great job! Great detail....I can second your glowing recommendations for Erwin Hoetjes; "Tourbook '72" (not many left I presume) and Geir Nornes' "The Curious Chronicles of Villa Nellcote"- Great research exploring new areas of history and background of the Villa, while Tourbook digs deep into the details of the concerts (and 'recordings'!). I jumped on those as they were announced. Of course, the other books including Greeefield's Original "STP" books are musts if budgets allow..

ahhhh yes indeed! glad you are on board and on early to get the seat! Just such great work they did, and they deserve all the exposure. I have been in touch with them thru messaging plenty during this. Talking and discussing. What is great is, this is newer info, that clarifies and shines more details. Getting out there in a structured timeline fashion is what I was glad to do! There was so much more I could have mentioned, but that is for the fan to get the book to find out. thanks for all!!

I was only 17 when I saw this 1971 show at RFK stadium
I was in awe that I was really seeing the stones all the way from England up on that stage.
I bought the super deluxe version and it had remakes of the little postcards that came in the album.

Another great video Steve. I seen them down at Maple Leaf Garden's twelfth row centre in 1972. Loved the searchlights as a light show. Seen them down there at the Gardens in 76 too.... A guy I used to drink with was the drummer for the band that toured with the Stones in 65 The Ugly Ducklings. He told me that all the Stones were aloof with them except Keith. He said one time Keith rented a huge suite in a hotel and invited the band and some roadies to a party. Keith had naked beautiful girls serving beer, booze and or munchie's on trays. You could take the girls slash hookers into the bedrooms for some nookie. The drummer telling me the story Robin Boers said when I asked that Keith didn't ball any of the broads. He just would sit on the couch with a big grin and slap a bare ass every now and then and laugh. Robin said it was a fantastic party and Keith was just one of the boys not like the rest of the Stones...
