I am by no means declaring my self any expert or know it all, 100% not.
It is very possible that I may have missed some fact or misstated something.
    UPDATE PLEASE READ:
IMPORTANT, I want to make it clear, I mention Ry Cooder, and his timing of being at Redlands in 68' along with some photos 1:02:55. These were most likely taken in 69'.
To confirm Ry did not contribute to Beggars and sessions or Redlands in 68', despite many books mentioning this.
It is known Ry was recording in L.A. with Randy Newman in 68'.
I am admittingly stating, as I do in this doc, I was NOT sure of timing.
It is important for me to make sure you as a Stones fans are aware of this timeline and info.
    Sorry for any misleading!
It is BRIAN playing SLIDE on STILL A FOOL
At 22:40 is a photo of Keith playing a Fender Precision Bass. I had read it was a 66', but a true bassist did confirm that it is an early 60's model (61').

This complete documentary will cover the time period Early 1968 - Fall 68.
I describe my findings and thoughts on the the Stones making this album.
I just love The Stones just like you.
This documentary is by no means declared as a professional delivery. It is done with simple IPhone and IMovie,. A DIY project. but takes so many hours.
I am just compiling these details for fans that may NOT know about this timeframe. Also, to prove how great the STONES are.
There are so many doubters of The Stones, and felt there was a need to put this out for us and future fans. From a fan for the fan.
I sincerely hope you get something out of this and enjoy it!
Feel free to leave comments and any constructive information or details.
If there are any impolite/nasty/non-productive comments you will be removed from this channel immediately. I have zero tolerance!
I am grateful there are so many fans and channels that share their knowledge, concert video clips, bootlegs, hard to find outtakes, memorabilia, insights.

I was just watching the Dylan, Keith and Ronnie clip from Live Aid 1985. I remember being really excited when they came on at JFK. But from where we were sitting the night time performances were easier to see on the stage screens. Plus at that point in the proceedings everyone was exhausted. But they still pulled it off. The perfect end to one of the most amazing days in music history. >< This album was one of the Stones albums that I bought later on. The first Stones album that I bought as an early teen was Hot Rocks. I think it was because of Rocks that I ventured out and bought Beggars, Sticky and Goats Head. The fan in me wanted to hear every song that was not being played on terrestrial radio. Beggars surely delivered. Especially the acoustic stuff like Dear Doctor, Factory Girl and Jigsaw. >< Thank you for including some of the non-album tracks/outtakes Steve. This is one of my favorite parts in all of your album makings. The song Hamburger To Go/Stuck Out All Alone. I am always blown away by the amount of songs that are still in the can to this very day. They could release the most amazing box set on vinyl of all of the outtakes bar none. It would sell like crazy to all of the longtime fans like you and I. Wow. The outtake of Street Fighting Man {Pay Your Dues} is fantastic. The lyrical content would probably makes waves nowadays. {smile} But back then things were not so politically correct. So bands could get away with a lot more. They usually went after Zappa and left everyone else alone. {smile again} Be back to watch the rest at a later time. This is the first weekend all endless summer long that we are having back to back sunny days. I am off to the beach. Have a super weekend Steve. Another stellar Stones Making Of effort. I will leave you by describing this video in one word using a Stones song title. 'Tops'~

nice Rob! TY!!! and for sharing! YEs remember the Live Aid performance extremely vividly well. Despite the sound and perf, I am always glad to still be in their presence. Beggars is a TRUE STONES fans album. Not one I would introduce a first timer on. I was a bit shocked to see how few songs were worked on. I think they really wanted to move on getting an album out and tour. can not believe it is closing in on August! We got cheated with these real humid and more smoky days. enjoy!

I will give you my 1975ish Japan pressing of Rolled Gold. I'll donate it to the channel, It will be safer in your collection than mine. This is a heavy box unit with factory rice paper sleeves. The 1/8" card stock poster/stiffener with all six stones on it and the cover. The book with lyrics and I don't know what as it's in Japanese. Also the red banner that covers their privates. Mint condition, haven't seen one on ebay.

Good morning Steve. I came back to watch the rest of this fantastic BB Making Of and I noticed that my original comment was gone? I left you a staller and thorough comment but I guess that I did not hit the comment button? I cannot remember everything that I wrote. But I did mention how I bought this album in the first five purchased Stones albums in my teen years. Hot Rocks came first. The rest followed. I also mentioned that the outtakes that you post and talk about are always some of my favorite portions of these Making Of documentaries. That alternate version of Street Fighting Man {Pay Your Dues} was crazy. Whenever you hear a Stones outtake for the first time it kind of juggles your senses a bit. You have the original versions tattooed in your brain. So even if you hear a different chord strum or a different accented word from Jagger you notice it instantly. I will have to come back and finish this later on. I got to run. But I do commend you for keeping it going. You really need to pat yourself on the back for all of your efforts. This is something that no one has done before. The research, the info and the delivery. Outstanding~

not to jump into this or create a conflict -- wonderful documentary, and thank you for such professional quality and/or research is beyond reproach. But there seems to be another version of "Pay Your Dues."" floating around that truly sounds as if its the backing track for what came out on record, which these vocals =added , Simple as that. Didn't know origin of lyrics. Interesting but not exactly Revolutionary... lol
In other version, I didn't hear all the clutter from the instruments and that allowed Keith's guitars to shine through more easily. m For me, the lushness of this version steps all over vibe that starts the song...... This song contains many riddles and engineer tricks -- not to mention Keith's opening chords he played in that microphone on the cassette.
*In an interview a few years ago, the jerk interviewer got Keith a copy of the cassette deck or one like it -- and asked Keith to 'show" how he got this great lo -fo sound..... It sounded DREADUL..... Looking forward to Part 2. JMHO - and probably wrong!!! Thanks.

thank you Rob!! I did see a post from you.....hmmm? thanks for ALL! The Stones just had / have the special blend of highs and lows that built them to what they are. Amazing serendipity and plenty of chaos and hard times complete the recipe. We got to witness this in our lifetime, like seeing Mozart. Keeping this fire going and teaching folks (how ever I can) is what I wanted to accomplish. So someone had to do it! Glad you can dig all the pieces I put together. So to answer your question, I do feel a fantastic sense of accomplishment and very proud to deliver this! Not for any ego, but just for the sake of RnR and RnR'ers.
thanks JGWire for your input. I am not that geeky that I collect and listen to all versions of outtakes. I know there are a lot of outtakes and mixes and so many folks now can separate tracks and mix their own. Hence the last song in this doc.
IF you find this version, let me know, I always appreciate a turn on! thanks for sharing!!

@@FlipSideCT I sent a small donation that I’ll try to be regular about. I just love the insight, the window into this creative yet commercial world and the resulting epic records. I was so surprised to see you had done Black and Blue, one of my favorite unsung records. I know we’d be the best of friends if I lived near. It gives comfort as I’m going through some horrible illness, MS or ? Some mysterious Neurological disease and I’m scared to my bones. I’ve lost all my friends in the past 5 years to accident, tragedy, and good old fashioned cancer. At 54, I’m alone and trying to find the strength to get through and your familiar kind voice is a comfort. I really appreciated you. It’s you or David Attenborough I put on when it gets bad. I spent some time in cranberry Nj, NYC, and upstate NY when I dropped out of college in 89’. Found my way by accident there and really enjoyed your part of the world. I had a good friend that I lost along the way that was from this area due to divorce and identity crisis. You remind me of the best parts of him. I even got my Kiwi wife into the Stones. Didn’t see that coming but I changed the paradigm and she commented last night about how much she’s been digging Lou Reed. Transformer was her gateway drug but it’s Songs for Drella that she nuts about with Cale/Reed that is a masterpiece. I hope you’ve heard that record. I had been working at a record store when it came in as a promo. The needle landed and it hasn’t come off since. Sadly, my friend Ken who passed last year just couldn’t stand Mick, his lips or falsetto but I had blast busting his balls about the greatness of tue Rolling Stones.

Jumping in here to express the astonishment I feel when viewing the album charts 15:57 Such a treasure trove of incredible artists and music. It's like some fantasy collection of superheroes. How did we go from that to the current situation? I guess corporations ruined it by focusing on optimising for revenue above all other considerations. Also, I have one of those Philips cassette recorders. Still have the mic and single earpiece with the leather case. It cost me no more than $5 or $10 about 20 years ago in a 2nd hand store in Berlin. I bought it because of the JJF recording story but I also recalled my pre-school teacher bringing one into class and setting up the mic in about 1970. That was tech most of us had never seen.

Judging by rock and roll circus Brian was still playing well. And he contributed a decent amount of music on Beggars. But he was spiraling more in the beginning of 1969. It was clear Brian would not be able to tour. The Stones had no choice but to let him go. Also wonder if the Circus outakes are lying around somewhere.always thought blood red wine turned into Symphony for thd Devil.

He did play, and did perform RnRC. is was unravelling. Keith knew he was to carry the weight. There are outtakes I am sure, if you search deep on YT. Hey Steve
Thank you, Maestro. This was such a nice treat to watch in celebration of Mick’s 80th. Perfect timing on your part.
Kicking it off with a symphonic opening was a great twist. I can’t imagine how unbalanced the ratio is for the work you put in, just to create 1 min of video. As Scooby and Shaggy would say, Yikes!
Loved the shot of the book spines with the song titles. Their lyrics are so underrated and ignored, but they are literary classics.
That was fabulous and right of you to include a lesson of song roots. It’s always right to honour those who have been unjustly ignored, forgotten. Many don’t realize how well-educated the Stones are about where their sound came from.
1968 was such a pivotal year in history with unbelievable turmoil around the world. CNN did that superb 4-part series on it, based on the four seasons, and Ken Burns had that sublime and monumental PBS series on Vietnam. Both are must-see tv.
Again, you blow my mind with the rare and unique audio and video/pictorial sources you manage to source out for your works.
The deterioration of Brian seems to really escalate at this time. I recall Bill Wyman thinking he may have been an undiagnosed epileptic in his autobiography. Recently someone suggested that maybe Brian was bipolar. We’ve certainly seen many an entertainer self-medicate for that condition, most unsuccessfully. One can’t discount how much fame affects someone either. Apparently, there is a recent BBC doc on Brian that has been highly recommended to me. Hopefully it does come over to North America, just as the brilliant My Life as a Rolling Stone doc series from last year did.
I may be in the minority, but I think you also have a similar opinion although maybe not as strong as mine. I believe Pay Your Dues is better than SFM. The sound “kicks” more. Until you pointed it out, as it’s the beat that captures my attention, I can be oblivious to a meaning of a song so I had no idea it was about an Indian Chief.
This was a great choice for the next production that you tackled. Beggars is the era when the band became the classic force with their look, sound, act, image.

By the way, I just noticed a promo for a new Stones podcast, Stones Touring Party, if you can believe it or not and it’s all about the 72 STP tour by the author of the book of the same name. You might want to subscribe 😉

    • @FlipSideCT
      @FlipSideCT  10 місяців тому

Thank you for getting that 2 piece opening, there were a few that commented on the first, but it takes a good literary person to recognize the second. That visual was not a normal site, and would have hoped more fans would have said how cool it was. Alright, it's just you and I!!
I had to piece in the roots, as I needed to get the viewers involved in what KEith and The Stones heads were at. I just do not know if some folks appreciated it.
Did not see PBS or KEn's docs, will need to.
I take a lot of pride in my research. The mission steps reads, engage the viewer with something they have not heard or seen. It is too easy to get the obvious visuals. not for me.
Thinking about have a work session (paid) on how to make these. But who knows.
Brian just could not keep up with the overwhelming Drugs, Alcohol, Anita leave, police, M&K taking over, health issues, relationship issues with out of wedlock for so many kids. He needed a therapist! Too much for a delicate person.
Understood Pay your Dues. Why an Indian chief, could have been any subject.
Beggars is still an album not many fans care for. My intention was to try to curb that and make this understood.
OH! STP Podcast. Interesting. I have the few books on it. Just saw the preview. thank you. will move. Then again, I Am looking to learn something I do not know at this point. I hope it does well. thanks for that turn on.
I do have an STP Tour book $80 from an author in Norway that spent I think 20 years on every show detail. It could not get it out to the market for some reason. He has TEST versions that he sells.
I have one, and it is fantastic. I was going to do a doc on this tour.....so now that will be interesting. thanks for all!!!!! best steve

🎉 yo Steve. Jumping in a little late here but as you know, I’m always with you on all of your stuff. you know, it’s really good to see that you’re dipping back into the Brian Jones era a little bit. you are covering it great. The Contant that you put together is brilliant! I know that we both agree that overall Mick Taylor was probably the best guitarist they had, even though he was the one that had the least amount of time with the band. Still love, Ronnie Woods stuff. Well, Brian Jones stuff was very, very interesting and I could tell you probably enjoyed yourself. Researching stuff for the Brian Jones era. as always, you always manage to uncover a lot of things that I had forgotten about. you always do a great job refreshing my memory of the band at that time frame. I mean, like Dave Mason, sitting in with the band for a couple of things, some really cool stuff. The Ry Cooder material played a huge part in this time line. all the instruments Brian Jones played especially the melotron stuff. even though Nikki Hopkins took the lion share on the keyboards, Bill Wyman, surprisingly. shows a lot of his piano skills and organ stuff too! A lot of the great stuff that was left in the can is finally showing up now, after all these years, which is great! I can’t wait for part two! sorry for the delay. You know, I’m kind of old-school and don’t know much about sending things through PayPal. I’m not very good with cell phones or computers so, I’m having somebody help me with the PayPal thing I apologize for that. You just keep on rocking it, like you always do flipside from one fan to another, you are the greatest with this stuff. Your docs are the best OK then, cheers to you my friend. I’m waiting for part two and I’ll be talking to you soon. - PHILLY DC.🎉!!!

thanks as always Domenic! appreciated all your input here and comments! well said and taken. I will share this with you. I am extremely cautious and not so keen on presenting the Brian years. There is just way too much sensitivity and anger with his fans if something is not stated the way they want to hear it. I take constructive input, and can not tolerate the anger comments which I have received and removed quickly. So with that said I really have to reconsider that era. I give all credit to Brian and his talents and forming the band. But there is so much hatred to Jagger/Richards for their actions they took during the time. I do not want to deal with that negativity.
With that said, I am pointing out to a few folks, an update in the description, regarding Ry Cooder. Someone pointed this out today, so it bothers me that I "may" have misstated something even though I declared fully that I am not 100% on this topic.
I have not heard anything regardless 100% of what is true or not. So I do have to take it on the chin and phrase this in PT2.
I understand your technical skills.....but thank you for all the support!

I had to come back and give it another listen today. Actually for what ever it’s worth yesterday I listened to this doc on the A train to 145th St in Harlem to visit a friend. So I missed some of the details do to distractions. Anyway I’m the guy who put in your comments that you should have AWARDS on your wall. I really do hope that these docs find there way into the Stones camp . I’m sure they would enjoy them like we do! I’m rambling now ok. So I came back today and read your notes and saw that you are contemplating not doing anymore. No. No no. Ok. I don’t have much but I certainly will be going to Pay Pal and sending you a donation cause I look forward to these like I did when waiting for the latest Stones record. With Excitement. Just maybe my favourite Stones album (but that changes on a weekly basis) Really enjoyed the video and one point it did reinforce is how unsuited the Stones were to the Psychedelia that permeated the 60s and beyond. Yes, there's a few gems on 'Satanic Majesties' like Citadel, 2000 Light Years from Home and She's a Rainbow but the remainder is lazy derivative chaff befitting its rank status as a dishonorably discharged 'Private Pepper' The back to basics approach adopted on 'Beggars Banquet' provided the first installment in a succession of masterpieces like Let It Bleed, Get Your Ya Ya's Out, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street.

Sonofabitch this didn't come up on my feed. I'm here now though. Your foray into the blues was interesting but being a blues fan left me wanting more. LOL ... Me personally loved the way the Stones and the other British bands interpreted the blues. It was fresh, new to a blues fan like myself. Yeah Beggars Banquet, It was my last year as a teenager and things in the world were pretty messed up. Us longhairs still weren't accepted. Your doc brings back a lot of memories. Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed and Sticky fingers are without question the 3 greatest in a row albums ever put out by an artist bar none. The Beatles, Hendrix, Led Zep, it don't matter. That triumvirate of Stones albums tops them all. Another great documentary Steve. Kudos' I ain't got much but I can toss you a couple of bucks. By the way I picked up a couple more Ry Cooder albums the other day. I know your a fan..... Cheers.

The think the March 1968 purchase of the London apartment at Chany walk and Chelsea gets mixed up with the Stargroves purchase in winter or spring of 1970. That might be why we can find information on both of those years for StrGvs.

Great documentary as always, especially the outtakes from this era. Always loved Still A Fool and good to hear an in depth look at both the Stones cover and the Muddy Waters original. There was an instrumental from the Beggars Banquet sessions I always loved called I Was Just A Country Boy that I wish would have been worked on more. Child Of The Moon is another favorite of these sessions, its kinda magical how that song would have fit on Banquet but would have also fit on Satanic Majesties.

I also need to also add that your constant research is completely daily consuming and I believe that you're doing this like a pirate and sifting through true facts by declaring what's true and what is speculation and this takes quite a bit of time before a single point gets put into your very entertaining piece of art that you put out. Mike, you made my day and smiled! I really thank you for your keen insight and sharing thoughts. I take super and above and beyond pride in ALL my lifetime projects. As a long time Stones head, that would discuss geek details with my mates in the young days.......it stopped as we all drifted. After watching many YT vids and observing forums on STONES, I found folks are not getting it, and there is repetition and negativity being communicated. It was me that needed to reach back and want to educate and hand hold folks more details on how and why about the Stones. There was horrible bashing of albums, and it pushed my buttons.
So great that you observed my skills and approach to get this out there. I do get more negative thumbs up then I would expect (2-3%) to positive thumbs up. Not bad ration, but these are the negative and angry folks that are out there and DO NOT GET ME. Docs from a fan for the fan.
I am seeing donations, and still hoping there is more, as the word gets spread. This is needed for my MOJO and a new computer. working 10 evenings straight for 4 hours , then a break, then repeat, all this after my Full Time day job.......is exhausting and concerning for me. thanks for all!
