I love this album, every song, everything about it. Every song rules to me. I love "Exciter", and the title track and "All Hell's Breakin' Loose", but I also love "Fits Like A Glove" and "Young And Wasted", as well as "Dance All Over You Face" and "Gimme More" a lot too. Also, not arguing, but in defense of Gene singing "Young And Wasted", I like Gene singing it way better. I also happen to like Vinnie's solos on the album. I just love this album 100%. I can't be like some people and just find a song not to like on every album. I gotta admit the only album I'm not too crazy about is "Hot In The Shade" besides a few songs. Everything else, I love. I do enjoy your reviews though, but I happen to love KISS a lot and maybe I'm obsessed with their music. I love it all.

I agree this was most definitely a band oriented album. Some of that have come from looking at Vinnie but another might have come out of desperation because the band had lost their lucrative production deal with Frehley's departure. I'm confident that white background on the album was part of those cost cutting measures as well. When I initially saw it, I felt it was their last record because it was abundantly clear they had no financial backing left.
At the end of the day, I think too much gets made of Vinnie and not enough made of the sheer novelty of KISS being unmasked. That gimmick encouraged people to give the band another look. But this album neither generated a top 40 hit nor did it peak very high on the album charts (cresting at 24th). The much ballyhooed title track only reached 66 on the singles charts, so musically this was not a highwater moment for the band. What DID give them exposure was the video showing them unmasked. TO this day its still look at as THE moment, so it still carries that appeal.
But musically they did not set the world on fire. And the album was not even certified platinum until December 1990 (exactly seven years after its release). I know fans love to embrace this record for reasons I understand. But sometimes that love bleeds over into some misleading perspectives about how it really did commercially for its day. Had KISS remained masked, this album would have bombed as badly as Creatures. Stanley leaned heavily on hit writers and producers to follow trends during the 80's, but KISS never found an image or sound to redefine themselves, so it was back to the makeup by the mid 90's.

I can generally agree to your review, with the exception of "Gimme More". I absolutely love that song with its high pace and swinging riff. For me the weak spot was the title song, which is too plain simple. Whereas the live version with it's vocal opening and the additional riff and guitar solo is very good. Shortly after the release I saw them perform live in Brussels. It was awesome. Freed from their heavy suits and high heels they stormed all over the stage.

Am I alone by saying this is the best KISS album? This albums is towing the line between a rock and a metal album. and I love all the experimental stuff in the album, it's sounds oddly modern; like a lot of modern alternative metal stuff. And I don't know who was doing all the screaming in the album but it sounds superb. This is easily KISS's heaviest album till this point.

I wasn't a fan of this album when it came out. I was about 12 and not ready for the over the top crude sex references, hostile vocal volumes, and curse words. I was still in Elder/Unmasked mode. Listening to this album made me want to take a shower...it make me feel unclean. I had to take a break from KISS for about two years.
Also, I wasn't ready to see another KISS member leave. I used to pretend Vinnie was Ace on the front. Calling him, "Vinnie" was just a practical joke.

Lick it Up is a very 80's sound glam song very catchy but that was it. i feel a need to correct you about Nikki Sixx's reason for writing "you're all i need". he clearly mentions many times that he got the idea from a news broadcast of a guy who killed his girlfriend so she wouldn't leave him. not once did Nikki ever say it was written with his own girlfriend in mind. in fact, i believe he was dating Naomi Campbell at the time.
your other videos have errors as well. I like these videos, so it isn't a personal attack against you, but you're talking about KISS to a bunch of die-hard KISS fans who know everything there is about the band. so please do us all a favor, and look into your sources a bit more before posting these videos. I highly suggest reading all their biographies.

I have read all four Kiss biographies and use them for reference as well as other Kiss books. One actually goes in depth song by song and I quote it often in my reviews. That doesn't mean I don't make mistakes or have factual errors but there is research done on the videos.
My biggest flubs so far seem to be mishearing lyrics or not knowing about other bands like not knowing who produced From the Inside. Seriously, I could've just looked that up on Wikipedia and I just assumed it was Ezrin like an idiot.
