    RoB is clearly the cursed katana they've been doing since forever (Hiltless, Chaos Blade, Chikage) and its description even says "a cursed weapon that has felled countless men" so it's odd that the price for its power isn't the user's HP especially considering that most blood skills reduce your HP. I really appreciate mentioning build variety in Elden Ring - for me it's one of the main reasons why ER is my favorite and most replayable FromSoftware game. One thing that I'm kinda sad that wasn't mentioned is legacy dungeon design - for me they are best locations that FromSoft ever created and I never had that much fun while exploring locations like in them. I love especially Leyndell, that is probably not only my favorite location in these games, it's my favorite location in any game (It's basically perfect to me and even if it has some flaws they are minor to me).

    • @HeyTarnished
      @HeyTarnished Рік тому +14

      @@khaosinkorporated9493 Yeah Elden Ring seems to have caused a bit of a divide between the old Souls vets (I hate that name) & the ones that loved Bloodborne, Sekiro & kept an open-mind, it’s mostly due to how different it is (open-world design & new boss combat design which is an evolution from the previous Souls games), while both aspects have massively improved over the linear exploration with little to no branching paths (BB had some, I’m looking at you DS3), it made some of the old fanbase feel home sick a little, and decided to take the stuff that the game’s did really good as if it’s a bad thing, which is completely ridiculous, it is coming from that Joseph Anderson video for the most part, it inspired & misinformed a lot of people’s opinions in a really concerning way to where you just can’t have a single discussion about the game without someone criticizing it one way or another, it’s really upsetting, but it’s mostly in the comment sections, look at Ember, Prez, SmoughTown & many other UA-cam channels’ polls, you’ll see Elden Ring plowing through these votes winning almost all the time as the best Soulsborne game by far, most of the criticism coming to ER can be applied to other souls games and it’s ridiculous to see many people pointing them out while announcing their fave souls game is either BB or DS3, it’s so hypocritical.
      Put simply, Elden Ring has made very audacious game design efforts, and From Software has successfully achieved it in ways no other game developer can do, albeit with some mistakes here and there, it destroys the past Souls games in so many ways it’s not even funny, but at the same time, some older souls fans didn’t like some of the decisions it took which is to be expected because it’s a pretty big departure, and a departure that has (IMO) sullied the older Souls games, made them feel outdated.

      @khaosinkorporated9493 Рік тому +7

      @@HeyTarnished I also feel like many of the complaints came from all the copy-pasting, which is fair. Also not all of the unique bosses were hits either. I always loved Elden Ring for the sheer creativity, the variety, and all the different and fun ways to play.
      Also, I can see what you mean by other FromSoft games feeling outdated by comparison, but honestly, I don’t mind. The original Spyro the Dragon games for example may feel outdated in terms of graphics and some of its controls, but they’re still good games. Dark Souls has some stuff that can be considered outdated but I still enjoy the game quite a lot. Elden Ring doesn’t ruin that. It takes a while to get used to each FromSoft title, that’s just part of their philosophy. If you play Elden Ring and then play Dark Souls, you’ll have to adapt to Dark Souls again. If you play Elden Ring after Dark Souls, you’ll have to get use to the Elden Ring controls again. These games just take a while to get used to, the more you play them, the more used to them you get, and often, the more you enjoy them. That’s just kinda the philosophy of these game’s design.
      I kinda went on a rant there, and what I’m saying may be a little scattershot, but I just thought since you gave such a detailed response I may as well do that too.

Every single boss in this game is GOOD, anyway. Take Bloodborne, the game that for some reason everyone hails as the flawless masterpiece- it has 7 non-optional bad bosses in a _row._ Shadows, Rom, One Reborn, Mico, Wet Nurse, Gehrman and Flora. Elden Ring has 2, Fire Giant and Duo. That's not even including all of the amazing optional bosses like the Crucible Knights, Tree Sentinals, Loretta, the Godskins (on their own), the Gargoyles (on their own), etc. Every boss in ER is *at least* good. I feel like Yorm could of been a better fight if they didn't give you the Storm Ruler at all the first time around, but instead made you fight "normally" but if you were struggling on him the game would give you a hint about Siegward. Letting you know he can be a great help to the fight and during the fight he would use Storm Ruler to break Yorm's stance, letting you get a damage window in. After the fight is over like it happens in game now, Siegward would give you his Storm Ruler for helping him on his quest, making NG+ playthroughs quicker and easier for a boss you've completed already. I know Siegward can disappear if you don't do his quest in a timely manner but you just negate it by removing the boss kill time window for him. Just my thoughts on it, he seems to be a big waste of potential for a Lord of Cinder.

    Elden ring did the entirity of the combat system better than DS3, objectively it's literally just an improved version of it, same goes for the magic system.
    I still have a hard time playing DS3 without trying to initiate a jump attack or guard counter lol.
    Also another thing Elden Ring did better are the legacy dungeons, their design is fucking fantastic, each one of em had a unique atmosphere and approach to design and exploration, and also they are all explorable which makes it all so much better than previous legacy dungeons. Leyndell will always be on top.
    For sekiro I'd say the music or mini-bosses, as they were more complex and varied in ER than sekiro for me.

      The layouts of things (Enemies, etc) oftentimes lack strategy since they're non-specific to the space (instead theyre reused, hence the messed up agro-ranges/targetting distances also); it feels like the enemies came afterward the level planning; sonetimes like they just threw them in, and their layouts lack strategy/planning. It feels mostly like the opposite in their other videogames.
      The pairings of types of Enemies/bosses more so than other Fromsoft feel genuinely awful. Since they're not specifically designed around one another's movesets, their movements often contradict each other, making reactions to them unfair. Their proximity makes getting ganged feel un avoidable.

    regarding the Invasions/PvP thing: I really liked Dark Souls 3 and it was my first time playing a Souls game, but the invaders were actually what kinda killed my enjoyment along the way. I'd find myself in a new area and boom, invaded and destroyed (cuz I didnt know what the heck i was doing) so I had to respawn and cancel out all the hard work I'd done to get where I was, only to be invaded again and kicked back. This would even happen during bosses; I got an invader who got into Wolnir's Boss Arena with me, and when Wolnir would strike and I move out of the way, the invader tried to attack (ended up beating the invader with a Seed of a Giant Tree). My experience with Elden Ring has been much better since I can't have my progression set back by trolling players unless I have a friend with me, and even then, I find the invasions to be a fun little mix-up between bosses. I know there are some people out there who love invading and having duels and stuff, but I genuinely felt like DS3 was kinda shitty at times because I couldn't progress or explore due to the constant invasions.

    One think ER does the best by a long shot over other games imo is the lore told through the environment, Is incredible to see that some events in the game are not told by cuscenes not character dialogues, but you just see it by what you see, like the Dragon who attacked Stormveil, and probably was slayed when you fight Godrick, that some part of Altus are afected by deathblight because Godwin corpse is under there, that the main reason General Radanh halted the stars was because things like Astel, who arguably destroyed some cities, that one of the reasons of why Liurnia is has part of the civilization a bit underground may be because the floor got weakened after eroding for a long time (the lake of rot is underneath), that Farum Azula probably went above Limgrave due to the ruins you can find, included the beast of Farum Azula you can find, that Rykard actually loves Radanh a lot and thats why he has a painting of him, as well as Radanh having those giant mechanic Faces as Soldiers very likely Rykard built, who also has his mother Rennala, that Caelid was before the city of Magic and Dragons, and where Radanh learnt his magic powers... Those kind of things makes you realize how well the lore is told. You may say what you want about ER, but discovering the story like making an archeology expedition is fantastic.

    About the Demon Souls one, I think Yhorm is a better improvement in gimmick bossfight. What I mean, is that you can defeat Yhorm WITHOUT the storm ruler by hitting his right arm(weapon holding one) or head, while dealing good damage this way(and getting a frequent ripostes). While Rycard has the spectacle, which I like, if you fight Yorhm by riposte, you spend more than 20 seconds in his bossfight, so you can see more of his attacks,which are cool. This way, I prefer Yhorm more than Rykard. I know that you can fight Rykard without serpenthunter, but when I tried it, I realised,that it would take eternity to beat him(and a lot of poise and fire resist). So, if you never tried fighting Yhorm this way, give it a shot, it's fun.But don't forget to take vertical attacking weapon, or you won't have enough reach. Zerolenny was able to do it with a broken sword, I was able to do it with a Greatsword of Artorias. Also, there is one thing I like about spells in DS2. Spices. For me the thing ER does better than the rest of the Souls games is the combat system, especially against bosses. It's something that's been very controversial, because it doesn't follow the mold of "have roll, will travel" as earlier games, particularly Dark Souls 3, which has pissed a lot of veterans off. Instead, it makes every defensive option (rolling, jumping, running, blocking) useful in different ways for different attacks, which makes learning the boss movesets way more engaging than just learning when to roll. On top of the stagger system rewarding the use of strong attacks, which require a fair bit more work to set up, it motivates a much more complete understanding of the bosses' attacks than previous games.
    Sekiro does do this slightly better, but mostly because it does a better job onboarding players into having to use a wider range of defensive tools than they may be used to.

    • @Erick-tv8oq
      @Erick-tv8oq Рік тому +4

      Completely agree. I think the only thing I would fault Elden Ring for in this sense is its failure to communicate what is different about its combat systems.
      For instance, I discovered that Elden Ring played differently from DS3 by sheer coincidence. In Margit's fight after a while he starts doing a double slash + cane stab into the ground combo, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to dodge all three attacks. One try by pure chance I dodged two times away from him instead of towards him and completely avoided the attack, which made me think "If I have to dodge away from him then I can't punish him, which means that attack is bullshit", but then I remembered I had the jump button. Next time he did the attack, I dodge twice backwards, and then did a jump + light attack as a punish, and it worked. That really opened my mind about how different Elden Ring's combat systems could be, simply because in Bloodborne/DS3 dodging towards the enemy is the answer 99% of the time.
      Another key difference between how I played and how every other Souls veteran played was how I avoided slow attacks. While others tried to dodge all slow attacks exactly in time, I simply ran away. Turns out Elden Ring has much better mobility when compared to other Soulsborne titles (I suspect that is the case because of the open world), and I used that so every time a boss held an attack I would simply avoid it entirely instead of potentially being struck while trying to dodge it. As a result, I had way too much fun weaving out of bosses' movesets and coming back to punish with a running attack/jump attack.
      The problem really isn't how different Elden Ring's combat experience can feel, but rather the fact that the game never made any efforts towards communicating these changes to old players. I saw hundreds of people thinking ER's bosses were bullshit because of the seemingly unavoidable combos and the dragged out attacks, when all it took for me to enjoy those fights was getting my head out of the Soulsborne box. If not for Margit's seemingly unavoidable three hit combo and my own stubborness, maybe I would have been on the same boat as the disgruntled Souls veterans.

      @@Erick-tv8oq That's an amazing summary of the issue, yeah. I managed to figure it out partly because I happened to have just finished a Sekiro run, so I was primed for combat that demanded more than rolling, and partly because my first boss was the Ulcerated Tree Spirit in the Hero's Grave you start at, and that boss basically forced me to use all the game's tools to beat it, including running (because of the explosion attack), and that required the most letting go of old habits. Did teach me very quickly that with ER's shorter roll distance, if you roll more than once in a row in order to reposition, you would have been better off running.

      Ds3 pissed me off, rarely punished spamming rolling. Plus, cancelling the longer, harder attacks is fucking garbage; completely removes the rule of having to commit to actions, again rewarding spamming rolls (also incentivised from having higher stamina, lower poise). It feels more based off of just one's reflexes than planning/positioning or strategy.
      I like that Elden Ring tried to course-correct this design decision, often successfully too. Unfortunately to me it sonetimes feels genuinely artificial; the input reading is straight-up nonsense sometimes, I've started my movements, then the enemies/boss uses their delayed attacks... they read this prior input, and I'm immediately hit. One of the main criticisms of Souls games, that has once again reared its head in Elden Ring, is how defensive people in the community get over their favorite game. There's a decent chunk of people who just can't take criticism towards their favorite game, and just assume you must either be hating the game just to be different, or that you just aren't good at it, and therefore think its bad because you can't do well. Sekiro gets this issue the worst imo, with Bloodborne being second. I personally find Sekiro to be very overrated (still a good game, just not for me, and has several things I would've preferred to be handled differently) while I love Bloodborne, even though the graphics and framerate leave a lot to be desired nowadays. The more open the community is to criticism about their games, the better the feedback we can give to FromSoft, and the better they can make their games.
    p.s. the thing I think ER did better than previous games was enemy placement. DS2 (sotf) was especially bad about it, but all the games have moments where I can remember just fuming over certain sections and how annoyingly painful it was to get through them. Elden Ring is unique in that, most of the time, the annoying encounters are avoidable, which is a downright miracle considering how big the game is. Haligtree town and the branches before it can still burn in a dumpster fire though. Getting one-shot by ants or bubbles because I mistimed a roll or literally getting pushed off the map is not a good time.

    plus i play a lot of coop with my brother and a friend, and we FREQUENTLY run into people with items from far into the game even at low levels, so the invaders usually have the advantage of a finished build when the coopers are usually just progressing

    Most of the DS1 base game bosses are super underwhelming/uninteresting, DeS is filled with…well, gimmick bosses that pose no challenge, DS2 has a lot of filler and awful runbacks, BB bosses are very uncreative from a mechanical standpoint or are flat out uninteresting, DS3 has a more decent output but there are still very weak ones like Oceiros or the tree, and lastly Sekiro has pound for pound the most filler, and really the only good ones for the most part are the memory bosses except for monkeys and the ape duo.

Its not worse because its open world or better, its just different and when you view the game that way instead of comparing it to other games it make both the souls seires and elden ring seem much better.

The feeling you get from any game, whether it was when you were 8 or 28, is the only thing that matters. And if you enjoyed an older game because it made you happier at the time you should like it more than a game that is *objectively* better because to you, it doesn’t bring that same level of joy.

    And it shows another plus: fast enemies like the thrally were really annoying in DS3 due to no post and using shiels was... boring. But in ER, tgey are perfectly countered with guard counters and a great techer for it.

    3:30 WRONG. You just need a finger remedy active. No friend needed. Blues will pop in taking the place of the second and third summons. Mad tounge makes the second blue and invader appear. Blues are much slower then reds get called in, so watch out.
    The "needs friends for invasion" is annoying since theres a lot of people who want to invade without all the constant ganking. And the co-oper would probably bitch less about it since theres less peopleinvading them and more who are able to invade people who want that. Also i bleive most invavaders have a good respect for a solo host who wants invaders, most.
    Adding a slight 1-5% rune boost to the remedy would also be an ok idea in my mind so more peoole autually want to use it, and feel like its not only a punishment item for solo players, but a risk reward item. Its not out of the realm of idea for a change in the game considering the biggdr patches in the past.

It is kind of somber, it's not outright gratifying feeling; they're sort of like animals, though they possess demonic soul's. Even main bosses (looking at you Astel that have no reason to be in a random cave in the middle of nowhere), and can someone tell Miyazaki that shoving two enemies on the same arena don't make a new one, it doesn't matter if they are technically a pair (*stares intensively to Foreskin Duo)

    not a single area in the older games, including their dlcs, come even close to a single legacy dungeon in level design complexity, and that's because theyre designed with jumping in mind, now add the open world and underground to the mix where theyre designed for your double jumping horse, and i find it laughable to say the older games have better level or exploration design.

DS3, DS2 went through the BS, the difference is that the souls community solidified in the later years of DS3. It existed obviously in DS1 and DeS but it was where the PvP content started to shine, Mods became more prominent and newer lore heads other than Vaati. Newbie DS3 head and DeS/DaS old heads banning acting like it those nothing for the series is insanity incarnate. At the end of DS3 cycle, it felt like DS3 was the most uninspired, casual, R1 spamming, nostalgia grabbing, shallow abomination. Having the tread through that almost killed the series for me and now it’s happening again. Now DS3 gods gift to man, the bosses are now not over bloated, Bloodborne copying, dodge roll simulators but the peak of gaming history(Just ignore the ten other mediocre bosses it had) and it’s infinitely replay-able ( Despite being extremely criticized for its “lack luster linear and bland” level design). This keeps happening, it’s annoying. I told myself to not engage with the community because this would happen again but I didn’t listen, I thought it would be different but it wasn’t… It’s like community learned nothing from the ending of DS3. Endless repeating the same thing over and over and over….

In reality they all pretty much have been controversial since like Dark Souls 2, just more and more people get to join in on the conversation 😂
      I certainly hope that my content doesn't come across that way, I like to think I judge every game by its own merits as a package. My comments are already embedded in the video so I don't have to be terribly nuanced down here lol. I'd say the other big advantage Elden Ring has over its non-Sekiro predecessors is the complexity of boss battles. The set of attacks you'll be doing and the ways to dodge and counter boss attacks are so much more varied. I've heard that in DS3 all you really need to do is roll and light attack and that'll take down most bosses easily.

      Yeah, in DS3, as great as most bosses are, rely too much in R1 and rollspams. The R2 attacks and Weapon Arts are so slow, weak and situational that the game disincentivices variety of attacks and rarely rewarded smart positioning like ER.

    You missed the taunters tongue in ER which, when activated, invites invaders to your world whether you’re solo, duo, or trio

      I didn't miss it, it's just a non-factor because only like 5% of invasions or less are taunter tongue-ed

    The whole supreme hunter ordeal is just like yorms boss fight but a tad more advanced I don’t mind it.

    Finally. Elden ring is not my favorite souls games for sure. But i don't like how everyone turned against the game and started to bash it. Every souls game has tons of flaws. Elden ring is one of them as well.
