Everyone is praising stevie and she's awesome but Lindsey deserves most of the credit here. He wrote the song, sings lead, and plays the amazing guitar riffs. I think everyone forgets how much talent the rest of the band has
One more note: while I am more of a Lindsey fan, credit where credit is due. This song is the only one that all five members share writing credits. That iconic baseline in the middle from John McVie? That’s all his. I forget the rest, but check this The Chain Demo. Absolutely beautiful and unexpected. This was from Buckingham Nicks, before they were part of FM. ua-cam.com/video/YNHbe0Q9UfI/v-deo.html

Stevie Nicks (vocals) and Lindsey Buckingham (guitar, vocals) had been together for years and were breaking up while making this album, Christine(keyboards/vocals) and John McVie (bass) were also divorcing at that time while recording this certified Platinum album. Check out the Buckingham Nicks album for some earlier music, they were the American part of the band, Christine, John and Mick Fleetwood (drums) are all from England
If I remember right, through the Nicks & Buckingham break up Stevie hooked up with Mick, the drummer. They were all doing tons of drugs, and the band was beginning to fall apart. They were so consumed with writing and recording and performing all they ever saw was each other. They have reunited several times over the years and you can tell Nicks and Buckingham still really love each other even though they've moved on. Sweet
To record, they left Los Angeles to get away from the record company, attorney and all of the other business demands. They sequestered themselves in a windowless studio in Sausalito, California. Their isolation along with the copious amounts of alcohol and Bolivian marching powder on hand did not make for good relations. Nicks recalled, “We wondered whether we would get through ‘Rumours’. In that tiny little room there were five people that were totally breaking up.”
John McVie is a criminally underrated bass player. I don't think Mick Fleetwood gets enough credit for his drumming, either. I guess it's easy for the two of them to get hidden behind Stevie, Lindsey and Christine. They are easily one of the most talented bands ever!
So the real backstory on this song is, Stevie Nicks (female singer #1) was married to Lindsay Buckingham (male singer, guitar) but having an affair with Mick Fleetwood (drummer). Christine McVie (keys, female singer #2) was married to John McVie (bass) but having an affair outside the band. By the time they wrote this song all of them were hooked on cocaine. Their lives were a mess but the only thing they had going for them was the band itself because they all hated each other outside the studio but inside they were just magic. The Chain is the only song cowritten by all five members in their entire history. This song is literally about them putting their personal drama aside to focus on what was important and what was actually paying the bills -- they all pledge not to break the Chain holding them together. And crazy enough the song mostly worked and they stayed together and kept cranking out incredible music for over a decade after this. They sweated BLOOD to make this song though.
@@stevielegend325 You're absolutely right. Somehow I always thought they were. I guess not. They were together though, and Stevie sleeping with Mick was a betrayal.
In answer to your question "Why do we enjoy misery in music?" Could it be because; 1) it seems to resonate with our own misery or 2) Someone feeling more miserable than us puts things in perspective and makes us feel better? I remember this whole album being played almost constantly in the 70s by a friend. It was a good album - no bad songs.
I LOVE your reactions!!! Especially when they are to songs that were, and are, the soundtrack to my life and times. Amazing, thank you. The bass player is John McVie - he's the 'Mac' part and the drummer's name is Mick Fleetwood. If you hang around the bass section of the musical intrument store in your town for a while you'll hear that riff played by many a customer (or even a staff member or two). It is one of the first riffs that budding bassists learn. For guitarists back "in the olden days" it was either "Smoke On the Water" or "Stairway To Heaven". That feeling you were talking about is why "The Blues" were invented. Letting out the pain in the only way a person knows. I'm going deep for this one. "Black Magic Woman" by Fleetwood Mac in their original configuration. The original guitar player, Peter Green, wrote "Black Magic Woman" and Fleetwood Mac recorded it about a year before Santana recorded the definitve version. When you get a chance, check out the official video from their live 1997 concert. You won't be able to post it, it would get blocked but you'll love the live performance.
The Tusk album will really freak you out. Esp some of Lindsay Buckinghams music he made in home. Sisters of the Moon is tremendous and the song Tusk is backed by the University of Southern Callifornia's marching band. You gotta hear it
Tusk is a MUST listen to! Great song BUT, also showcased the skill of The USC Trojan Marching Band.
Silver Springs and Landslide are two of my favorites. Take a listen to them.
Easy answer, not feeling alone in our sadness.
Why yes this whole album is all about heartbreak, was done while 2 couples in the band were breaking up and you might save yourself some time and just do the whole album because it is that good...♡
Great song! Rumors a is great album!
I love your pink hat! You’re adorable! ✌️
Thank you!! 😊
Album of the year.
Stevie Nicks is the smartest woman in Music ...Prince wanted to give her a song she turned it down saying it was too much.... that song was Purple Rain
Yup. The WHOLE ALBUM IS BADASS
might be FINEST recorded album!!!!
I wish you could have seen a live version of these of these songs. Song from the same album and not a break-up song. Second Hand News ua-cam.com/video/UjspxETOmv0/v-deo.html
Great Break Up Song🙄💔
Love Harry's cover of this classic song
I don't think it's that we love misery as much as it is that misery makes artists write great music.
You must react to Frozen Love by Buckingham Nicks. It’s from Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham first album.
Check out Tusk live from their The Dance performance.
